How the Cordyceps Infection in The Last of Us Started
Image
HBO's The Last of Us introduced us to a completely distinct kind of zombie story, explaining the root cause of the outbreak at the very beginning. Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the series takes place twenty years after a fungus infection turns the majority of the world's population into zombies. Joel Miller, who helps out the resistance, the Fireflies, in exchange for certain favors, comes across a teenage girl named Ellie, whom he must accompany beyond the city. However, she just might be holding the key to ending the pandemic once and for all.

Whether you're a dedicated fan of the original games or a newcomer to the HBO series, the origin of the infection can feel elusive since the details mostly unfold in the background. While the show slowly unravels the mystery with each episode, some parts of the Cordyceps Infection remain difficult to understand. So, how exactly...

God of War Producers Exit TV Series, Amazon Starting Over From Scratch
Image
Fans excited about the upcoming God of War television series will seemingly have to wait a little longer as the series is undergoing major changes behind the scenes and starting over from scratch. News of a television series broke in March 2022, and while things were originally moving smoothly, the series has hit a major speed bump.

According to Deadline, showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus turned in multiple scripts for God of War before exiting the series. Even though sources told Deadline that Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios were happy with the scripts turned in, they are looking to move the series in a new creative direction. No new showrunner has been announced yet, and a new writers' room is being considered.

The move certainly is shocking as Rafe Judkins has an overall deal with Amazon Prime Video and is currently...

The Last of Us Creators Confirm More Story Changes in Season 2
Craig Mazin
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have confirmed that Season 2 of The Last of Us will feature similar changes to the source material as Season 1. The first season of HBO's hit adaptation was adored by critics and general audiences, as well as fans of the video games. The series ripped entire scenes and sequences right out of Naughty Dog Studio's beloved franchise of the same name, and has been called one of the most faithful video game adaptations so far. Surprisingly, Season 1 received even more praise for the changes it made to the source material. Though it didn't cut major characters or needlessly alter character details, Season 1 took underdeveloped characters from the video game and gave them a new life on TV. According to Mazin and Druckmann, Season 2 will do exactly the same.

"Our goal is to tell the best story possible," Neil Druckmann told Variety. Luckily for Druckmann and Mazin,...

Microbiologist Debunks The Last of Us' Fungus Zombies
Image
Sorry everyone, but your daymares of living in the world of The Last of Us probably won't come true anytime soon, as a microbiologist has debunked the "science" that made the show's zombie virus happen. Unlike other zombie-centric movies and shows, which either see the dead rising out of graves or various different diseases giving dead people a hunger for brains, The Last of Us takes a naturopathic approach to its outbreak. Cordyceps, a real fungus, has mutated and can now infect humans, turning them into biting corpses, and eventually, the dreaded clickers (after their entire bodies have become entrenched in fungus).

Speaking to Wired, microbiologist Dan Buckley was asked about the zombie virus in The Last of Us and explained how a zombie virus could actually happen. While cordyceps exists in real life, the chances of it ever infecting humans are almost impossible. "The clickers that you saw where...

‘Furiosa’ Trucking To $80M-$85M Worldwide Start; ‘The Garfield Movie’ Consuming $30M+ U.S. – Memorial Day Box Office
Image
There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.

With Warner Bros’ prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie hitting marquees, the volume of event product increases, which is good thing. More big movies give people more reasons to attend. Unfortunately, both titles are not Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5M all-time Memorial Day opening record) nor is it last year’s The Little Mermaid stateside start ($118.8M) in their mass appeal.

Furiosa is both a reboot of the Mad Max franchise and a prequel as Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the one armed action of Charlize Theron, who fans of the George Miller franchise are still rabid about when its comes to the desert vigilante’s big screen portrayal. After a...

There’s a specific picture that comes up time and time again in MGM+’s Beacon 23, of a lone man standing just outside a lighthouse as a massive wave comes crashing from behind. Whether the man makes it inside, whether he drowns, why he was out there in the first place are left up for the viewer to imagine, based on their own hopes or fears. But the not-knowing casts a certain mood in itself.

It’s a fitting prop for a series that similarly proves more interested in raising questions than answering them, and that likewise suggests the uncertainty might be the point. Its endless searching can prove frustrating at times, particularly when the sci-fi drama stumbles over basic flaws in its storytelling. But those with enough curiosity and patience to wait out its rough patches — and those with a taste for cerebral sci-fi — may find themselves falling under its plaintive spell.

‘The Last of Us’ Star Merle Dandridge on the Conflicting Emotions of the Finale’s Tragic Flashback
Image
[This story contains spoilers for The Last of Us’ season finale, “Look for the Light.”]

Merle Dandridge had the unique opportunity to reprise her role from The Last of Us video game series on HBO’s live-action adaptation, and so far, she’s the only performer from the games that can say that. Dandridge plays Marlene, the leader of the rebellious Fireflies, and she also happens to be the oldest friend of Anna (Ashley Johnson), Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) mother.

In the Ali Abbasi-directed season one finale, “Look for the Light,” which was written by series co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, Dandridge took on one of her most challenging scenes to date, as Marlene, during a flashback, had to put an infected Anna to death shortly after she’d given birth to Ellie. But before Marlene pulled the trigger, she made a promise to Anna that she’d look after her child.

The rub of the scene is that Ashley Johnson played the...

The first season of HBO’s highly anticipated adaptation of Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed video game “The Last of Us” officially concluded on Sunday evening. Here, TheWrap details the differences between the series and the popular video game.

“The Last of Us,” which is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) and Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The game first made its debut on PlayStation 3 in 2013, while its sequel, “The Last of Us: Part II,” was released in...

The Last Of Us Teaser: Pedro Pascal And Bella Ramsey Hit The Road As Joel And Ellie
Image
Hopefully you still remember the crafting recipe for shivs, because it'll soon be time to return to the world of "The Last of Us." The critically-acclaimed post-apocalyptic video game from Naughty Dog has been adapted for the screen at HBO, with Pedro Pascal ("The Mandalorian") once again playing a reluctant dad to a scrappy orphan as Joel, and Bella Ramsey ("Game of Thrones") once again playing a scrappy orphan as Ellie.

"The Last of Us" is set in a version of our world that has been ravaged by a fungal pandemic known as the cordyceps brain infection, which turns sufferers into highly aggressive living zombies in the early stages and strange mushroom monsters in the later stages. Gruff survivor Joel is charged with escorting rebellious teenager Ellie across this dangerous landscape, with many grim horrors and plenty of acoustic guitar music along the way. Craig Mazin, who made waves with...

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us (2023)
The Last Of Us TV Series May Have Quietly Cast Nick Offerman
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us (2023)
HBO's "The Last of Us" series adapts the acclaimed post-apocalyptic video games developed by Naughty Dog, with the games' creative director, Neil Druckmann, serving as co-showrunner alongside writer-producer Craig Mazin ("Chernobyl"). Yet, as visually faithful as the show is shaping up to be, it's also clear this won't be a beat-for-beat re-telling in terms of story. Season 1 alone will feature such original additions as Perry, a rebel played by Tommy's voice actor from the games, Jeffrey Pierce. Natasha Mumba ("Y: The Last Man") and Brad Leland ("Friday Night Lights") are similarly playing characters who were likely created for the series to aid...

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us (2023)
HBO is bringing the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic world of "The Last of Us" to life, with plenty of people coming along for the ride. Production on this video game adaptation is well underway, with details remaining pretty tight (sans a few sneak peeks here and there), but every now and then, we get news of another cast member added to the team.

For fans of the original game, it's always exciting to put a new face to a beloved character — unless the character happens to be new, too. The latest development sees Natasha Mumba (pictured above in "The Handmaid's Tale") taking on the...
