FIFA U20 Wc: Uruguay edge Gambia; Korea upset Ecuador to seal quarterfinal spots
Mendoza (Argentina), June 2 (Ians) Anderson Duarte’s decisive goal helped Uruguay edge Gambia 1-0 to enter the FIFA U-20 World Cup quarterfinals.

In a match that saw both sides reduced to ten men, a low and driven rocket from Uruguay midfielder Duarte midway through the second half proved to be the difference as they edged past Gambia to set up an intriguing quarterfinal against the USA.

Gambia were up against it early on as Mansour Mbye was sent off in the 17th minute for a challenge on Juan de los Santos following an on-field Var review by referee Francois Letexier.

Uruguay failed to take full advantage of having an extra man for the remainder of the first half, as Luciano Rodriguez’s yellow card was upgraded to a red following another on-field Var call right before the break for an elbow thrown at Sainey Sanyang’s face. It was to...

Film Review: Fanfare (2019) by Lee Don-ku
Image
After his first two features, the thriller “Fatal” and the drama “Entangled”, Korean director Lee Don-ku continues with a blend of both genres titled “Fanfare”. The movie already received critical acclaim and managed to entertain audiences at lat year's Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival as well as Seoul Independent Film Festival, a success it truly deserves given its many qualities. The director again proves his skill at using a minimalist setting to full effect, telling a story about loyalty, betrayal and deception in a style reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino's “Reservoir Dogs” and the gangster cinema of British filmmaker Guy Ritchie.

“Fanfare” is available from Echelon Studios

It is late on Halloween Eve and the majority of bars and clubs have already closed down, when J (Im Hwa-yeong) receives a call to meet an important client. In order to pass the time, she goes into one of the last bars still open,...

Film Review: Three Sisters (2021) by Lee Seung-won
Image
Moon So-ri has always been an actress whose projects are worth keeping an eye out for. While she rarely does solo leading lady parts these days, even her work within an ensemble cast rarely disappoints. It is, thus, with anticipation that her latest feature “Three Sisters” by director Lee Seung-won, on which she also acts as producer, was looked forward to.

Three Sisters screened at Osaka Asian Film Festival

As the title suggests, our central characters here are three sisters, each with their different lives yet each equally pitiable in those lives. The eldest, Hee-sook, is an always apologetic florist who can’t seem to tell anyone, not even her rebellious daughter Bo-mi, that she has been diagnosed with cancer. Middle sister Mi-yeon is a devout Catholic choirmaster who can’t get her children to follow the faith as well as she’d want them to, while also just finding...

Film Review: Revenger (2018) by Lee Seung-won
South Korean cinema isn’t generally known for martial arts-heavy, stylish action films. The action films that do well are mostly of the gangster genre with hyper-stylised violence, which should make first-time director Lee Seung-won’s martial arts extravaganza “Revenger” slightly unique. The film’s trailer promised us lots of action, excitingly choreographed fight scenes and a high body count, making for a welcome relief from the usual gun/knife action sequences. But is it?

Well, yes and no. But let’s take it from the top. Somewhere in the Indian Ocean is an island simply called A-101. Shared by 12 Asian countries, the island is used as a prison where the worst kind of criminals are exiled to and left to their own accord. Ex-Interpol officer Kim Yul is arrested, sentenced to life on A-101 and sent to the island. He has one objective in mind – find and kill the...
