‘Screamboat’ Review
Image
Stars: Tyler Posey, David Howard Thornton, Jared Johnston, Brian Quinn, Jesse Kove, Anthony E. Williams, Kailey Hyman, Brian Scolaro, Sarah Kopkin, Jesse Posey | Written by Steven Lamorte, Matthew Garcia-Dunn | Directed by Steven Lamorte

As someone who’s appreciated films like Jack and Jill, and Three Blind Mice but then didn’t adore Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and its sequel, I approached Screamboat with a blend of intrigue and scepticism. The film delves into the growing trend of turning classic public-domain characters into horror icons, transforming the cheerful mascot of Steamboat Willie into a bloodthirsty nightmare. With David Howard Thornton, known for his silent yet menacing performance as Art the Clown in Terrifier, stepping into the role of this twisted rodent, I had cautious optimism.

The story unfolds aboard a late-night Staten Island ferry, where an unlucky group of passengers finds themselves trapped with a monstrous, mutated mouse that has one goal: slaughter.

‘Screamboat’ Review: Mickey Mouse Attacks a Handful of ‘Terrifier’ Veterans in a Twisted Disney Ferry Tale
Image
There are two completely different kinds of brutality afoot in movies like “Screamboat,” the latest in the low-budget horror movie craze to pervert beloved intellectual property the instant their 95-year copyright protection lapses into the public domain. First, there’s whatever sadistic fates the filmmakers have in mind for the characters, from being impaled by a forklift to having their faces plunged into the propeller of the Staten Island Ferry. But the real violence — and the reason audiences presumably pay to see these IP parasites — is what’s done to the characters themselves, as there’s an illicit thrill in desecrating powerful brands, like Disney.

“Screamboat” isn’t the first slasher movie to spoof “Steamboat Willie,” the 1928 animated short that introduced a primitive black-and-white version of Mickey Mouse, but it’s a lot more fun than last year’s “The Mouse Trap,” a pathetic cash grab in which some guy...

Screamboat Review — It’s… Good?
Image
It only took a day after Steamboat Willie entered the public domain for it to be announced that there would be a horror film featuring the character. Although it’s not exactly groundbreaking cinema, Steven Lamorte’s Screamboat is the first of the “public domain horror flicks” to understand the assignment, delivering a horror-comedy that’s shallow and perhaps a tad overlong, but surprisingly very entertaining.

Screamboat Review

Inspired by the animated short Steamboat Willie — the only version of Mickey Mouse that has entered the public domain — Screamboat follows a group of NYC ferry passengers who must fight to survive the night against a killer mouse. If that sounds incredibly dumb, that’s because it is. But it’s dumb in a way that’s at least a little bit charming.

Screamboat leans into the inherent absurdity of its premise, and frankly, doesn’t really care if the audience gets it or not.

Screamboat: Disney-Style Final Trailer Finds David Howard Thornton's Murderous Mouse On The Rampage
Image
Whatever you do, don't call him Mickey!

Screamboat is set to hit theaters for a limited run on April 2, and Sleight of Hand Productions has released the final trailer for the Steamboat Willie horror parody, which stars David Howard Thornton - who plays Art the Clown in the Terrifier films - as a twisted take on the classic cartoon character.

As we're sure many of you will be aware, Steamboat Willie debuted in a 1928 animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, which is generally viewed as the first appearance of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. For all intents and purposes, Willie is the iconic Disney mascot, but something tells us this character won't be referred to as Mm in the movie.

This project is not part of the Twisted Childhood Universe, aka the "Poohniverse," but by the looks of this reprehensible rodent, he'd fit right in.

It’s not the first unofficial Mickey horror movie. And it won’t be the last…

‘Screamboat’ Trailer: David Howard Thornton’s Mouse Massacre Introduces Cast of Drunk Disney Princesses (Exclusive)

As passengers set sail, their trip turns deadly when the tiny terror unleashes murder and mayhem. Packed with big kills, big laughs, and a miniature menace, ‘Screamboat’ is a cinematic thrill ride that reimagines ‘Steamboat Willie’ like never before!”

The trailer, which parodies promotions for classic Disney films, features a cheery voice-over inviting viewers to “set sail for an adventure like no other!” The trailer also introduces the film’s expanded cast of characters, which includes five drunken Disney princess knockoffs: Cindi, Bella, Jazzy, Arianna and Rory. ‘Screamboat’ Brings Killer Rodent Mayhem to Cinemas
Image
David Howard Thornton, best known for his role as the sadistic Art the Clown in Terrifier and its brutal sequel, is set to terrorise audiences once again—this time as a rampaging rodent in Screamboat, a horror-comedy that transforms a harmless ferry ride into a nightmarish bloodbath. The film is set to hit Vue cinemas on 2nd April before arriving on digital platforms on 28th April and DVD in May, courtesy of Signature Entertainment.

Directed by Steven Lamorte (The Mean One), Screamboat takes the playful charm of classic animated mascots and distorts it into something far more menacing. The film follows a group of late-night commuters in New York who find themselves trapped on a ferry with an unexpected predator—a seemingly mischievous mouse that quickly reveals its far deadlier intentions. As the body count rises, the passengers must band together to survive against the pint-sized terror before their journey...

'Terrifier' Fans Should Be Excited for the Divisive Slasher 'Screamboat'
Image
As David Howard Thornton continues to gain notoriety for his role as Art the Clown in the popular Terrifier movies, his fans and slasher movie fanatics should book a ticket for Screamboat, a new killer cruise-ride horror movie opening in the U.S. in April 2025. Thornton portrays a murderous version of Mickey Mouse in the subversive slasher movie, building on a new disturbing Disney horror trend after last year's The Mouse Trap.

With obvious nods to Jason Takes Manhattan, a classic slasher on a cruise ship stopping in New York, Screamboat turns a touristy ferry ride into a fiendish and ferocious course through hyperviolent hell. Yet, with Thornton leading the way, Screamboat is the perfect alternative and/or placeholder to keep fans busy until Art the Clown returns for a fourth Terrifier film. All aboard!

'Screamboat's Premise, Explained

'Screamboat' Red-Band Trailer Sees 'Terrifier' Star Go On a Bloody Rampage
Image
Move over Winnie-the-Pooh, there's a new public domain killer on the loose, and his name is Steamboat Willie. The beloved Disney character is getting the horror treatment thanks to Terrifier franchise producers in the new film Screamboat, which also features Art the Clown actor David Howard Thornton as the killer mouse. The official red-band trailer for the horror flick directed by Steven Lamorte was recently released (seen below), and it showcases all the gory carnage we can expect when the film hits theaters on April 12.

"Welcome aboard the Staten Island Ferry," the trailer begins before we're presented with one of the biggest horror tropes ever: the doomsday defeatist. "This boat is cursed," the man says. "We're all going to die!" From there, we see the cast of Screamboat that inevitably gets picked off one-by-one by a shrunk-down Thornton, who portrays the character first made famous by Disney in 1928, and entered the public domain on Jan.

Alongside this announcement, fans were treated to the first look at the murderous mouse, played by David Howard Thornton, known for his chilling performance as Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise.

Art the Clown actor transforms into a furry menace for new Mickey Mouse-inspired horror movie
Image
This April, horror movie fans will get to see a version of Mickey Mouse unlike any they've seen before. Based on the classic 1928 animated short film Steamboat Willie, the official debut of characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Screamboat features none other than Art the Clown himself, David Howard Thornton, taking over as this menacing mouse.

On January 13, Variety exclusively shared a first look at Thornton in his menacing mouse getup, and it's... interesting. It's hard to make a mouse look scary, I guess. Because even though he's wielding a bloody harpoon, Thornton still looks kind of cuddly in his furry outfit.

Screamboat was initially supposed to come out this month, but Iconic Events Releasing has moved the release date to April. Iconic is also distributing the Twisted Childhood Universe (Tcu) film Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare, which started playing in select theaters on January 13. The two films are not connected...

Art the Clown Actor Transforms Into Killer Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie Parody Horror Film
Image
A new image has been revealed for the upcoming movie Screamboat. The film serves as a horror spoof of Steamboat Willie, the classic animated short that first introduced the Mickey Mouse character.

In 2024, Steamboat Willie officially entered the public domain. While later incarnations of Mickey Mouse are still protected by copyright law, the introductory version as shown in Steamboat Willie can legally be spoofed. This is part of a new trend that's picking up following the success of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, which took another beloved children's character and turned him evil thanks to the copyright protection going away. How Screamboat will turn out remains to be seen, but the first look at David Howard Thornton (the Terrifier trilogy's Art the Clown actor) in the role of the killer Willie has been revealed.

David Howard Thornton and Lauren LaVera in Terrifier 2 (2022)
Terrifier 2 (2022): Movie Ending, Explained – Is There a Sinister Connection Between Sienna and Art the Clown?
David Howard Thornton and Lauren LaVera in Terrifier 2 (2022)
Bringing the abominable Art the clown back to life – not that he needs any help with it; Terrifier 2 (2022) pushes the boundaries of blood-curdling gore with a mystical plot that furthers Art’s bloody secrets. The rotten, maggot-infested torture fest that has reportedly left cinemagoers not so shockingly sick is hardly just a darn good mindless slasher, unlike the first Terrifier (2016). It reflects in its domestic box that saw a massive jump of 84% in its third weekend of the release. With the sequel, Damien Leone gives the sadistic clown a more explored group of characters to brutalize, and this time Art gets to antagonize a true heroine with an angelic aura. But is that enough to take the ruthless, supernatural clown down?

A much more terrifying Pennywise; David Howard Thornton’s killing machine, Art the clown, made his first appearance in Leone’s horror anthology, All Hallow’s Eve. Being...
