The Soul Reaper (2023)
Film Review: The Sisters (2024) by Tran Huu Tan
The Soul Reaper (2023)
Hot on the heels of his excellent “The Soul Reaper,” director Tran Huu Tan next decides to turn his attention to a famous Vietnamese legend in the story of Tam and Cam for his latest project, which became the third-highest grossing Vietnamese Horror film of all time. Exploring a famous legend in the country that has very little exposure outside its borders, the infusion of “Cinderella” style structure with conventional Asian ghost movie aesthetics is also transplanted into a rural setting for a great spin on the legend.

Living in a remote village, stepsisters Tam (Rima Thanh Vy) and Cam (Lam Thanh My) try to live with a curse placed on the area years ago when The Pale Sire (Hanh Thuy Ngo Pham) tricked the villagers into offering a sacrifice to it. Now living with their cruel Stepmother (Thuy Diem), who always favors Tam over the deformed Cam, and Village...

Film Review: The Ancestral (2022) by Le-Van Kiet
Image
One of the most time-honored genre setups in history, the haunted house comes about through a nearly-incalculable number of entries that offer up everything, from the glossy mainstream work to the barest indie productions. A mainstay in American and European productions, Asia had tackled the genre with random success with the wild Japanese classic “Hausu” to the traditional Taiwanese effort “The Heirloom,” proving that the genre had staying power around the world. Already tackled before in “The House in the Alley,” director Le-Van Kiet's new film, a box-office smash in Vietnam upon its initial release, will now stream on Screambox from May 2, 2023.

Start screaming now with Screambox on iOS, Android, Prime Video, Roku, YouTube TV, Samsung, Comcast, Cox, and Screambox.com.

Moving out to the countryside, Thanh (Quang Tuan) and his daughters Linh (Lam Thanh My) and Yen (Mai Cat Vi) arrive at an ancestral house to get back...

Tiff Review: ‘The Third Wife’ is a Mesmerizing Directorial Debut
It’s 19th century Vietnam and fourteen-year old May (Nguyen Phuong Tra My) has just been married to a wealthy landowner named Hung (Long Le Vu). She has two other women to help steer her through womanhood, motherhood, and sexual pleasure (Nu Yên-Khê Tran’s first wife Ha and Mai Thu Huong Maya’s second wife Xuan) and a future of comfort awaiting her with but one goal: bearing a son. A bloody sheet is displayed to represent consummation; a growing belly to prove no time was wasted for conception. And as the days progress with less and less to do thanks to servants, May’s eyes and mind begin to gradually wander.

First-time feature writer/director Ash Mayfair introduces us to this world with a series of luxurious set-ups of varying length,...
