I think all of us Outer Banks fans are still not over the loss of our beloved JJ Maybank after the heartbreaking season 4 finale, and one of his fellow co-stars also feels the same. As filming for the fifth and final season of the Netflix hit has officially begun, things feel different on set without Rudy Pankow, as revealed by one of the stars.
Speaking with Extra TV recently to promote her new movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, Madelyn Cline, who plays Sarah Cameron on Obx, talked about how being on set this time is "really strange" because they "shot four seasons with him." And now he's not a part of this final leg of the Pogue journey. She continued on to say that "there's a part of the dynamic that isn't there anymore."

After its four-year-long run as a hit series, Outer Banks has managed to master the art of keeping its fans on the edge of their seats. They’ve featured wild treasure hunts and thrilling showdowns on the coast of North Carolina, and the viewers have always appreciated these efforts.

Outer Banks season 5 is starting filming very soon, but things are going to look a lot different on set for the final season without Rudy Pankow, who left the series after four seasons. Outer Banks season 5 will be the first season without JJ Maybank as a key character.
In the Outer Banks season 4 finale, JJ was killed by his biological father, Chandler Groff, played by J. Anthony Crane. After burying JJ in Morocco, John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Kiara (Madison Bailey), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) are ready to get revenge.
Heading into season 5, there are a few characters who will definitely play a bigger role without JJ. Let's get the list started with Kiara!

Netflix has amassed a truly massive library of hit TV shows at this point. While that list includes oft-cited favorites such as "Stranger Things" and "Squid Game," there is nothing in the streamer's library quite like the teen-focused series "Outer Banks." Part mystery, part drama, part adventure, it's captivated viewers somewhat quietly for four seasons now, with a fifth and final season on the way. Though not usually thought of amongst Netflix's most successful shows, it has proved to be quite popular.
"Outer Banks" centers on a group of realistic, sometimes foolish teens known as the Pogues in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There exists a divide between the Pogues and the Kooks, the name given to wealthy seasonal residents. A hurricane kills the power for the summer season and it sets off a chain of events that sets the show in motion.

Outer Banks leans hard into the friends-to-lovers trope and ends up face-planting. Instead of slow-burn charm, we get awkward stares, clunky moments, and zero real spark.
Frankly speaking, it’s less romantic tension and more secondhand embarrassment on loop. The very shift from friendship to romance feels rushed, forced, and way too scripted to land any real emotional punch.

Sure, the show nails the beach vibes and adventure chaos, but when it tries to get cute with love, it fumbles hard. The chemistry falls flat, the buildup lacks bite, and the whole thing feels more cringe than compelling.

Exclusive: Outer Banks breakout Chase Stokes is stepping behind the camera for his feature directorial debut with the coming-of-age drama I Told the Sunset About You. The project is based on an original concept by Stokes with Monarch Media’s Steve Barnett, Alan Powell and Vicky Patel producing the film through their company Monarch Media.
The film is described as a contemporary Bonnie and Clyde romantic thriller about a restless local waitress who is stuck in a monotonous routine until she meets Jameson, a quiet drifter passing through on his way to the Pacific coast. Their unlikely connection sparks a spontaneous journey westward, leading to unexpected gambles that transform their lives forever.
“I’m very excited that the Monarch team has given me the opportunity to extend my love for filmmaking beyond being in front of the camera,” said Stokes. “It’s always been a goal to get in the...

Created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, the action-adventure mystery teen drama Outer Banks. It is regarded as one of the popular coming-of-age stories with a stellar cast including Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Rudy Pankow, and others. What starts with a seemingly forbidden romance story in an ideal vacation town setting turns out to be a hunt for treasure with a lot of low and high waves coming their way.

Netflix's teen drama series Outer Banks has been a consistent success throughout its four seasons, and it has been renewed for season 5. Created for TV by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke in 2020, the series concerns a group of friends (who call themselves Pogues), who search for lost treasure and duke it out with rival teen group, The Kooks, in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina. Mixing all the trappings of classic teen romance with swashbuckling adventure, Outer Banks delivers a unique viewing experience that has helped make it one of Netflix's most popular originals.
Season four opens with a lot of emotional baggage, as the Pogues must not only deal with their complicated family lives, but the burgeoning new adventure that was laid out before them. Outer Banks is one of the most recent and most successful additions to the teen television landscape. Following a group of teenagers set on uncovering the mystery behind one of their father’s disappearances, the show toes the line of being a coming-of-age story while also being a mystery. It’s also a story about the societal divide between the rich (Kooks) and the working class (Pogues). The group we follow is the Pogues, which tends to mean that trouble follows, especially as the group’s ringleader, John B. (Chase Stokes), gets them deeper into a mystery they really shouldn’t be anywhere near. But the real mystery of Outer Banks is why all of these kids have daddy issues, and why none of them seem to have mothers.

Since 2020, Netflix's drama series Outer Banks has captivated audiences with its beautiful beachy setting and strange mysteries, but those seeking a strong follow-up should look no further, as the following ten shows are the best alternatives. For four seasons now, Outer Banks has centered on the socially divided teenagers of Outer Banks, North Carolina, and in particular, John B., who is searching for his missing father. Thus far, the series has garnered fairly positive reviews, with audiences quickly becoming invested in the show's mystery and melodrama. Yet, once Outer Banks ends, viewers may not know what to watch next.

Outer Banks’ Season 4 finale delivers intense moments, heartbreaks, and unexpected twists in the ending, making it one of the most emotional conclusions in the series. This season, split into two parts, brought the Pogues on a wild adventure to Morocco to uncover the fabled Blue Crown, only to face unforeseen betrayals, alliances, and sacrifices. Here’s a deep dive into all the significant events and the finale’s implications for the future of the Pogues.
What Is the Pogues’ Final Mission?
The Pogues’ journey in Season 4 takes them on a high-stakes adventure to Morocco in search of the legendary Blue Crown treasure, believed to bring immense wealth. For these teenagers, the Blue Crown symbolizes hope, stability, and a potential escape from their turbulent lives. As they navigate new territories, the group encounters both old enemies and surprising allies. Their mission, however, is far from straightforward, with shocking betrayals and personal conflicts that threaten their unity.

Season 4 of the Netflix treasure hunting show Outer Banks follows its main characters, the Pogues as they search for the notorious pirate Blackbeard's treasure, the Blue Crown, while racing against Chandler Groff and a vicious group of treasure hunters called the Lupine Corsairs. Unlike the situation in prior storylines, this adventure saw them working with rather than against Rafe.
From Outer Banks season 1, when Rafe killed sheriff Peterkin and helped his father, Ward, frame John B, he became one of the Pogue's biggest antagonists. He continued his role as a villain throughout season 2 and 3, as well by stealing Denmark Tanny's cross to melt it down and shooting his sister, Sarah. Though Rafe seemed to think that his actions...

Note: The following story contains spoilers from the “Outer Banks” Season 4 finale.
A mission that took the Pogues all the way to Morocco ended tragically as the crew lost not only the Blue Crown but also a member of their chosen family.
The penultimate season of “Outer Banks” concluded with Kiara (Madison Bailey) and the crew cradling JJ (Rudy Pankow) as he took his last breaths after his birth father stabbed him in the stomach.
Though JJ’s loss came as a shock to viewers, the character had a complete arc in Season 4. His world turned upside down when he realized he was born a Kook and his father was not who he said he was. He was framed for murder. He set the city on fire. He found the Blue Crown. And in the end, he sacrificed himself for his friends – his only real family.

Outer Banks may have more stories wash upon its shores at least if the series' co-creators/executive producers have a say in it. The popular Netflix YA series may have one more season left before its series finale arrives, but that hasn't stopped Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke from teasing out their hopes and dreams for future stories featuring the Pogues and Kooks.
In exclusive reporting from Deadline, the trio of creators mentioned their desire to tell "fother stories in this universe down the line," in a move that feels inevitable and sensible both for the streamer and the series' creators.

Spoiler Alert: The series includes details about Season 4 Part 2 of Netflix’s Outer Banks.
For the second time in four seasons, an Outer Banks finale ends with the Pogues mourning one of their own. But while John B, along with Sarah, turned up a few weeks after being presumed dead in the Season 1 finale, the death was real this time as JJ (Rudy Pankow) passed away in Morocco surrounded by his friends in the final minutes of the Season 4 closer after he had been stabbed to death by his father.
On a show of high stakes where every member of the Pogue crew has found themselves in grave danger multiple times over the past four seasons, JJ’s killing was still a shocker that is sure to reverberate throughout Outer Banks‘ upcoming fifth and final season.

They should have just killed him right then and there. But no. We wait until Morocco and Lightner is beating him up really good. Honestly, he deserved that and so much more. It was fun watching.
