In 2006, a movie came out starring Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Toby Jones. That’s a murderer’s row of talent bringing to life writer/director Douglas McGrath’s script — and very few people paid it much mind. But “Infamous” was a victim of bad timing, not bad filmmaking.

One can’t blame audiences for greeting it with a collective shrug. Season 2 of the anthology series centers on acclaimed writer Truman Capote (Tom Hollander), once a confidante to society’s most elite women, whom he nicknamed “the swans.” However, his act of betrayal effectively destroyed those relationships, banished him from high society and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

Per the official synopsis, “Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society...

FX on Wednesday released a trailer for Feud Season 2 — which comes nearly seven years after the end of Season 1.

The miniseries is set in the 1970s and ends with Truman Capote’s death in 1984. FX has confirmed the premiere date and released the key art (see above) for Feud Capote Vs. The Swans, the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s award-winning anthology.

The eight-episode limited series will premiere its first two episodes on Wednesday, January 31 at 10 pm Et/Pt on FX, simulcast with a special Director’s Cut of the first episode on Fxx. All episodes, including the Director’s Cut, will be available to stream next day on Hulu.

The series, based on the bestselling book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer, will premiere Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories. Check local listings for dates.

"I've never felt so connected to someone in my life." These can be dangerous words! This strange, awkward animated short film is a very personal tale about a short-lived relationship. Brontosaurus is a short film made by filmmaker Jack Dunphy, and it first premiered last year at various festivals including True/False, Nashville, Philadelphia, and Cucalorus. "A tale of lust, eating disorders, crossing boundaries, and tiny toy dinosaurs." It's an intimate short doc featuring hand-drawn animation to tell a story of, uh, why you don't sleep with your assistant. Dunphy adds via Ig: "It's been a long and winding road with this one, so I'm glad people are finally seeing it." While the style is a bit rough, and entirely unflattering, it goes right along the story and captures his depressed attitude. I hope he finishes his other film one day! Seemingly inspired by mumblecore filmmaking, Assholes actually plays out more like Troma’s take on the Brian Yuzna film Society, and under their auspices would have been titled something like “Attack of the Killer Assholes” or “New York Assholes Must Die.”

The story centres around three self-absorbed twenty-somethings coping with mumblecore ennui through drugs, therapy and family dinners. Adam, played by writer/director Peter Vack, is too busy getting stoned to pay attention to the fact that his now-sober sister, Adah, desperately wants his attention, and their parents’ attention, or anyone’s sexual attention – as she tells her analyst. Desperately horny, she hooks up with Adam’s best friend, Aaron (Jack Dunphy), whose anal obsession literally plumbs new depths of perversion.

When Peter Vack scored a role over the summer playing Lola Kirke’s boyfriend on the Amazon series “Mozart in the Jungle,” he used the money to direct his first feature. The actor had scored in dozens of low-budget projects and directed a short film a few years earlier, but he had reason to believe nobody else was going to back his feature-length debut.

“Just imagine the first sentence of the pitch,” said Vack, over lunch at Soho House. “‘It’s about two people who share an anal fetish, and I’m thinking of my sister to play the lead.’ I knew this particular endeavor was not something I’d be able to find investors for.”

For Jack Dunphy, making movies about his life is a way to sort things out. Film is an autobiographic medium that allows him, he says, to revisit tough memories and recreate them with a variety of visual styles. One such memory can be seen in “Chekhov,” an entry at TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival, presented with support from IMAX. It is comprised of two simple elements: footage of Dunphy’s ex-girlfriend Fiona, and a secretly-recorded phone call he made to his sister, Ruby. Works-in-progress event will run June 20-22 in Paris.

Us indie directors Charlie Birns and Madeline Olnek will present features at the sixth edition of Us in Progress in Paris.

Due to take place June 20-22, the event is a joint initiative between the American Film Festival in Wroclaw, the Champs-Elysées Film Festival in Paris and Black Rabbit in New York.

A total of five feature-length fiction works and documentaries will be presented at the event including Birns’s surrogate mother drama Family Affairs, his debut feature after a trio of shorts.

Respected New York playwright and film-maker Madeleine Olnek will present her Emily Dickinson-inspired third feature Wild Nights With Emily.

Rough-cuts of the participating films will be presented to 40 European sales agents, distributors, festival programmers and producers.

The winning film will get post-production, acquisition and promotion services offered by a number of sponsors from the independent cinema scene in Paris.

During the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, I had the opportunity to check out several movies on the fringe of the horror genre, including M.F.A., Assholes, and Two Pigeons, and you can read my thoughts on all three films right here:

M.F.A.: An uncomfortable and devastating exploration of the trauma that comes from rape and sexual violence, Natalie Leite’s M.F.A. punched a hole right through my soul. While rape is certainly an upsetting topic for most, writer Leah McKendrick’s approach to how the film’s protagonist, Noelle (the amazing Francesca Eastwood), handles her ordeal becomes something of a cinematic anthem of empowerment once the young woman takes matters into her own hands.

In M.F.A., we meet Noelle, who is completing the grad student program in Fine Arts, but she can’t seem to break past her own sense of mediocrity when it comes to creating her art.
