Hell Hole Review: A Gleefully Grisly Body Horror Throwback To John Carpenter's The Thing
Image
Hell Hole offers the craziest body horror since John Carpenter's The Thing with uniquely themed storytelling. The practical effects in the horror film are gleefully disgusting, while CGI effects range from subtle to low-budget. The directorial style also proves to be both visually stunning yet tonally jumbled, creating a mix of tension and energy.

The body horror subgenre is one of the more fascinating and wide-ranging of the larger genre's history, with everything from alien doppelgngers in Invasion of the Body Snatchers to the slow transformation into an insect-human hybrid in The Fly. With Hell Hole (2024) , the creative team known as The Adams Family comprised of directors/writers/stars John Adams, Terry Poser and writer Lulu Adams look to recapture the same chills and thrills of John Carpenter's The Thing. Though this results in some gleefully shocking visuals and a fast-paced story, there are a few missteps along the way.

‘Hell Hole’ Review: A Creature Feature By Way of a Mumblecore-ish Workplace Comedy
Image
With Hell Hole, the Catskills-based filmmaking collective known as the Adams family takes its first wobbly baby steps outside its homegrown horror comfort zone. Trading the group’s signature brand of lyrical, self-reflective terror for rambling, environmentalist sci-fi story set among a fracking crew living and working among industrial decay at the edge of a Balkan wilderness, the film is more interesting as an exercise in stretching genre tentacles than a satisfying narrative or artistic one-off. Still, it features enough of the cockeyed familial ruminations and loose improvisational aura for which the filmmakers have become known that their devotees will be more than pleased.

Heading up a fracking crew in the remote reaches of Serbia, Americans Emily (Toby Poser) and John (John Adams) find themselves at odds with the local workers and researchers who make sure their recently legalized extraction operation is above board to minimize environmental impact. As they bore into the earth,...

Serbian women wear their wedding rings on their right hands, he tells her. If she does that, no man will bother her. Wearing it on her left hand makes her look like a widow.

Is it just a friendly piece of advice? Gav is being way too personal towards his wife Cass (Emily Sweet) for somebody whom they only just met at a wedding. Not even the wedding of somebody they knew, though that part is Cass’ fault. She wanted to gatecrash one in order to get the full cultural...

FrightFest 2023 Review: Eight Eyes is an Outstanding, Frenzied Nightmare
Image
Austin Jennings has made his name directing The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder. For five years he has guided Joe Bob Briggs, Darcy the Mail Girl as well as a list of horror stars from the past 60 years. But now he has made his feature-film debut with Eight Eyes, a story that is bound to be shown on The Last Drive-In in 30 years’ time… because it has cult classic written all over it.

Cass (Emily Sweet) and Gav (Bradford Thomas) are on a trip through the Slavic region of Europe when they gate-crash a wedding, with Gav filming aspects of the festivities on his Super 8 camera. The following day the pair bump into another guest, Saint Peter (Bruno Veljanovski), who was at the wedding, although the pair don’t remember seeing him there. He is friendly and hospitable and slowly works his way into their vacation. He becomes their unofficial tour guide,...
