Amid a surge in Canadian nationalism after President Donald Trump sparked an escalating trade war with Canada, the Canadian entertainment industry has seen increased support for local content.
“It’s always been cool to watch Canadian films at the multiplex, but now with the developing situation in the U.S., it’s become imperative. If ever there was a time to embrace our Canadian stories and support our domestic film industry, it’s now,” Ashleigh Rains, festival director and head programmer at the Canadian Film Fest (Cff), tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Sonya Yokota William, director of Network of Independent Canadian Exhibitors, representing indie cinemas, adds that her organization is monitoring sentiment among Canadians for a possible Hollywood movie boycott. “I think it’s all been moving very fast and we still have to see how things shake out,” William says. “Cinema operators are concerned, of course, [but] at this point I...

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau taunted the United States on Thursday night, after his country won the 4 Nations Face-Off ice hockey tournament in overtime, posting, “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.” Team Canada’s Connor McDavid scored the game-winning goal to give his team the 3-2 win over the U.S. in Boston. The game was played amid heightened rivalry after President Donald Trump said Canada should become his country’s 51st state, with Trump openly calling Trudeau the “governor” of Canada. Negotiations over increasing tariffs on Canadian goods into the United States have also caused friction. The American national anthem has been regularly booed by Canadian sports fans in recent weeks. Trudeau posted a video of him celebrating the overtime win, hugging friends in a bar while wearing a Canada jersey. (Credit: Justin Trudeau via Storyful)

This was the first best-on-best tournament in nearly ten years. The competition, which began with four countries — the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland — competing in a round-robin format,...

Before the puck drop at the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off championship game in Boston, multiple fights had already broken out between Team USA and Team Canada fans in the lead up over the weekend. On Thursday, the night of the final, tensions were high as singer Chantal Kreviazuk took to the ice to sing Canada’s national anthem, “O Canada.”
Perceptive listeners tuning into the game may have picked up on Kreviazuk’s key change to the lyrics. At the beginning of the anthem, instead of singing, “True patriot love, in all of us command,...

The best NHL players from the U.S., Canada, Sweden, and Finland have faced off in this best-on-best tournament.
For the first time since the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi (I’m not counting the World Cup of Hockey), we have a best-on-best tournament in hockey with the 4 Nations Face-Off. Yes, there’s a big caveat – there’s no Russian, Czech, or Slovak team. But we will see the best NHL players from Finland, Sweden, Canada, and the United States go head-to-head in a very tasty preview of the Olympics next year. Plus, we get to watch Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, and Nathan MacKinnon on the same team. Yes, please. The 4 Nations Face-Off gets started on Wednesday, Feb. 12 when the Canadians take on the Swedes at 8 p.m. Et on TNT, TruTV, and streaming Max. Watch every game live with a three-day free trial of Hulu + Live TV.

Has Nikki Glaser singlehandedly revived the comedy roast?
Fresh off her star turn ripping a new one for NFL great Tom Brady on last month’s Netflix extravaganza, Glaser took to the ESPYs last night to lay waste to this year’s nominees for Best Male Athlete.
While the comedian might seem like an unusual choice as an ESPN presenter, Glaser has “actually been a huge fan of sports ever since I first watched Taylor Swift watch a football game.”
Here are Glaser’s five funniest kicks in the jockstrap from yesterday’s live broadcast…
1 Mahomes Is a Nepo Baby?
Watching Swift watch the Chiefs “changed my life because now I know who Patrick Mahomes is. Before I only knew him as the guy in the State Farm ads. And based on his acting, I just assumed he was the CEO’s son.”

It’s been years in the making, and today the Los Angeles Lakers chose 19-year-old Bronny James with pick No. 55 in the NBA draft.
The selection will unite the teen with his father, all-time great LeBron James, on the Lakers roster, the first-ever father-son duo in the league’s history to play at the same time, much less on the same team. The move creates not only a compelling box office draw but fulfills a stated dream of the elder James: to play with his son in the NBA.

The 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Final is set. The Florida Panthers will appear in their second consecutive final to face the Edmonton Oilers, with Game 1 set for Saturday, June 8 at 8 p.m. Et. The Panthers took down the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers to secure a second chance at a Stanley Cup after losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in the championship last year. Florida has home-ice advantage when the puck drops on Saturday, and you can watch all the action on ABC with a three-day trial and subscription to Hulu + Live TV.

“Imagine showing up to support your boyfriend at his championship beer league game, except your boyfriend happens to be playing against Connor McDavid,” says a voiceover for a video documenting the experience, posted on TikTok.

The 2023 Espys looked a little different this year, going without a host for the first time in its 31-year history amid the Hollywood writers strike. The sports celebrations carried on, though, with athletes across various games uniting at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the night’s big winner, taking home both best athlete, men’s sports and best NFL player, with the Chiefs also winning for best team. Mikaela Shiffrin (best athlete, women’s sports), Angel Reese (best breakthrough athlete), LeBron James (best record-breaking performance) and Lionel Messi (best championship performance) were also among the top honorees.
Presenters included Damar Hamlin, Dwyane Wade, Travis Kelce, Sue Bird, Mike Tyson and Livvy Dunne, with performances by Lil Wayne and H.E.R. — who performed a tribute to the 30th anniversary of the V Foundation and Jim Valvano’s iconic Espys speech in...

The 2023 Espy Awards have been handed out, and this year’s ESPYs honorees include people behind some of the biggest stories in sports over the last year.
Among the highlights, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and skier Mikaela Shiffrin took home top honors, winning Best Athlete in men’s and women’s sports, respectively.
Naturally, the Chiefs took home Best Team, and Mahomes took home another Espy for Best NFL player, thanks to the team’s Super Bowl Lvii win earlier this year, their second in 4 years. (Mahomes also led the Chiefs to victory at the Super Bowl in 2019.)
Angel Reese, the Lsu women’s basketball star who led the team to its 2023 NCAA championship win — and also prompted a lot of people into revealing how racist they are when she celebrated her success in a manner identical to her chief rival, Iowa Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark, but unlike Clark,...
