Host Shane Gillis brought his trademark brand of combative humor to the opening monologue of Wednesday night’s Espy Awards in Hollywood, drawing a mixed response from the audience of professional athletes and Hollywood celebrities.
The host’s jabs came in contrast to the high volume of kudos bestowed on major figures in women’s sports, including gymnast Simone Biles, rugby star Ilona Maher, recently retired soccer superstar Alex Morgan, retired WNBA great Diana Taurasi, tennis star Sloane Stephens and Penn State volleyball coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley. Olympic gymnast Suni Lee got the nod for best comeback athlete, a gender mixed category.
Morgan and Taurasi were jointly honored with the ESPYs Icon Award for their work beyond the game to advance women’s sports and improve working conditions for players.

On July 7, legendary Olympic gymnast Simone Biles posted a series of photos to Instagram from her vacation in San Pedro, Belize.
Last month, Biles was in the news after fighting with Riley Gaines over trans rights.
In the first photo, Biles relaxes on deck chairs in a string bikini, smiling at the camera. The second picture shows her and her NFL star husband, Jonathan Owens, cozied up together and the third shot shows Biles sticking her tongue out and flashing a peace sign at the camera, holding a cocktail in hand.
Biles captioned the post, “gone to belize ”.
Posting another snapshot to Instagram stories, Biles stood in the clear ocean water looking through the eyehole of a disposable camera pointed at the camera, the beach shore in the background.
The most decorated Olympian of all time, many of the remarks in the comments section showed nothing but love and support for Biles.

Simone Biles didn’t take long to reply. Reposting the video to her own Stories, the gymnast responded with a playful “girlllllllll yes”, followed by a friendly warning: “just wait and see.” This kind of banter highlights the genuine bond they’ve built beyond their respective sports.

Weeks after her social media clash with conservative activist Riley Gaines, legendary Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles has apologized in a powerful message to her Instagram stories.
On June 23, Biles wrote, “Strength is what we gain from the madness we survive.”
Earlier this month, Biles and Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer, became locked in a vicious dispute over transgender rights in sports.
Biles is the most decorated gymnast of all time, while Gaines placed 85th in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. Gaines went on to compete against Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete, in the 2022 NCAA Championships in the 200-meter freestyle, in which Thomas beat Gaines for fifth place.
The feud between Biles and Gaines began when Gaines made offensive comments about a transgender softball player.
Biles responded to Gaines shortly after they were posted, writing, “You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race.

Right-wing political activist Riley Gaines has been in an online feud with artistic gymnast Simone Biles over transgender athletes.
On June 6, Gaines retweeted a picture of the Minnesota team, Champlin Park, celebrating the state high school title, which they won with transgender pitcher Marissa Rothenberger on the team.
“Comments off lol,” she wrote on X. “To be expected when your star player is a boy.”
On the same day, Biles responded negatively to this tweet, which started the feud by condemning Gaines’ perspective on transgender athletes.
“You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race,” the gymnast stated in an X post. “Straight up sore loser. You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive Or creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category In All sports!! Simone Biles posted a powerful takedown of Riley Gaines.
It is remarkable to see perhaps the most talented athlete on the planet righteously dunk on someone whose claim to fame is tying for fifth place in swimming, flouncing on athletics, and becoming an anti-trans talking head.
As is always the case with these sorts, Gaines was targeting the most vulnerable — a transgender teenage girl.
And, as is also always the case, it was refreshing to see someone kinder and better absolutely destroy bigotry when it rears its ugly head.

The 2025 Webby Awards theme may have been “All Good,” as the annual ceremony celebrated the best of the internet from the past year, but host Ilana Glazer wasn’t shy about going after politics or the more problematic elements of technology.
Glazer kicked off the evening by joking that the “All Good” theme was selected because an alternative like “‘The Broligarchy’s Speeding of the Onslaught of Facism in the Face of the Climate Catastrophe at the Point of No Return’ would have bummed everybody out.”
As she continued her monologue, Glazer spoke about the continued uncertainty around the fate of TikTok and joked that Signal is the app that should truly be banned.
“TikTok and the Trump administration were the Ross and Rachel of social media — a real will they, won’t they,” Glazer joked. “They banned it and then they quickly brought it back. Now they’re talking about banning it again.

If there’s one trend from the past few years I can get behind, it’s the rise of comfy-core. This fashion movement combines the best parts of activewear — stretchy, breathable, and unapologetically cozy clothing — with the illusion that you actually tried. On Monday, May 5, the Met Ball’s long blue carpet was a feast for the eyes, coordinated carefully for staggered arrivals by Vogue staff, making for a supremely smooth beginning to fashion’s biggest night.
The calm choreography outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 82nd Street and 5th Avenue belied all the chaotic prep that went into making stars red carpet-ready: hair and makeup, last-minute tailoring, stylists rushing around Upper East Side hotels to serve various clients, shoe switches, jewelry deliveries, not to mention gaping New Yorkers anxious to spot famous faces. That controlled mayhem turned into a real storm this year, when Hollywood stylist Jessica Paster was grabbed by police officers outside of the legendarily tony Carlyle hotel just a few blocks away from the museum and dragged past the onlooking crowd in the rain.
Paster’s client Quinta Brunson was staying at the hotel — as was Paster,...

Title IX — a law that bans sex-based discrimination in education programs — wasn’t enacted until 1972. Yet, in the face of adversity, women have continued to shatter records and redefine greatness in sports. From Serena and Venus Williams to Simone Biles, Alex Morgan, Coco Gauff, and Caitlin Clark, some of the most remarkable athletes of our time are women.

With the Kentucky Derby becoming the cultural hotbed that it’s transformed into over the last decade, it’s no surprise that musicians, athletes, and influencers flocked to Louisville, Kentucky, for the 151st iteration of the The Run for the Roses (referencing the blanket of 554 red roses draped over the winning horse that crosses the finish line first each year).

Quinta Brunson hosted Saturday Night Live for a second time on Saturday, May 3, but she wasn’t the only A-list “shortie” appearing on the Studio 8H stage. Sabrina Carpenter joined the Abbott Elementary star for a song and dance, as you’ll see below. Plus, Saturday’s SNL episode defrocked Pope Trump and debuted two new brands. See the highlights from the show below. Sabrina Carpenter crashes Quinta Brunson’s monologue In her monologue, Brunson sang an ode to short celebs she stood next to cardboard cutouts of famous folks like Simone Biles and Kendrick Lamar. Then a very non-cardboard Sabrina Carpenter showed up, and the duo compared notes about their diminutive statures. “When you eat short ribs, does it just taste like rib?” Brunson asked. “When you read short stories, do they feel like novels?” inquired Carpenter. “Weekend Update” mocks Pope Trump In Saturday’s “Weekend Update” sketch, Colin Jost...

Saturday Night Live host Quinta Brunson sang about what it’s like being under five feet tall–something that Sabrina Carpenter popped in to say she could relate to.
The Abbott Elementary creator and star, who last hosted SNL in April 2023, prefaced her showtune: “I’m proof you can do anything you put your mind to, even if people look down on you, whether it’s because of where you come from or literally because you’re only 4′11.”
Brunson then sang about how some experiences at her height unintentionally turn out well.

“Abbott Elementary” star and creator Quinta Brunson is short and isn’t afraid to flaunt it. Hosting “Saturday Night Live” for the second time on May 3, Brunson opted to deliver her opening monologue in musical form, breaking into song and singing about the many benefits and joys of being short. “Shorties, tonight, this one’s for us,” Brunson, flanked by dancers, said, shouting out perks like getting “wasted on one glass of wine” and wearing crop tops as dresses.
Brunson’s next verse shouted out some of Hollywood’s shortest and highest-achieving celebrities, including 4’8” Olympian Simone Biles, 5’7” actor Tom Holland and 5’5” Kendrick Lamar. Continuing to dance and sing her way through the monologue, Brunson was joined on stage by “Short N’ Sweet” songstress Sabrina Carpenter, who joked about their mutual experiences being short. “When you eat short rib, does it just taste like rib? When you read short stories, are they just novels?...
