As Marvel gears up to cast actors for the X-Men reboot, fans have called out a volunteer for throwing his name in for Sunspot. Sunspot, a.k.a. Robert Da Costa, is an Afro-Brazilian mutant with the power to absorb solar radiation and generate heat and energy with the power of the sun. He was seen in the animated series X-Men ‘97.
There have been two live-action portrayals of Da Costa, with Adan Canto, who is Mexican, played him in X-Men: Days of Future Past, while Henry Zaga, a Brazilian actor, played him in The New Mutants. However, Zaga is not Black, and that was a huge criticism at the time.
Fans have rightfully called out influencers who are throwing their hat in the ring for Da Costa, especially when other White characters like Cyclops and Iceman are also available.

Reacher and Superman walk into a war zone—and viewers can’t get enough. Last year, Alan Ritchson and Henry Cavill teamed up for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, a gritty, guns-blazing World War II thriller that underwhelmed at the box office but is now thriving on streaming, as so many underperformers are wont to do these days. After a quiet theatrical run, the Guy Ritchie-directed film has become a global hit on Prime Video, where it's slowly climbing the charts.
Despite a 68% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have rallied behind the film, pushing its audience rating up to a whopping 91%—proof that viewers still want their action with a little grit, a little style, and a lot of slow-motion headshots. Written by Ritchie alongside Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, and Arash Amel, the movie adapts Damien Lewis’ non-fiction book of the same name. It follows a small, off-the-books...

The comic book movies genre is a guaranteed box-office interest. However, the one subgenre it has never seemed to master is horror.
Before Mike Flanagan, the absolute ingenue of streaming horror, wrote the idea for DC Studios Clayface project, there was no hope for an authentic scary superhero film.
Now, he's here. Clayface sounds fascinating, as in a firm reason for superhero fans and horror fans alike to get excited. In an exclusive with ComicBook promoting his new project with Stephen King, The Life of Chuck, Flanagan chatted up his work with DC Studios. More importantly, he talked about his inspiration: "Feat of Clay", the gripping two-part episode of Batman: The Animated Series.
Although he's not directing the movie, the screenplay and vision is Flanagan's. He shared that DC Studios is working on some revisions to the script but "really hopes it remains true to the spirit of what [he] wanted it to be.

It’s the morning after Chopard’s glamorous gala dinner at Carlton Beach during the Cannes Film Festival, and Finn Bennett is perched on a sofa high above the Croisette inside the luxury jeweler’s penthouse suite at Hôtel Martinez.
Alongside fellow honorees, the 26-year-old actor received a Chopard Trophy during the ceremony in front of an A-list crowd that included filmmaker Quentin Tarantino; jury members like Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong and president Juliette Binoche; and the woman assigned to hand over the trophies, Chopard godmother Angelina Jolie. Needless to say, Bennett needed a bit more time to process the fairy tale evening, one that came after turning heads in such roles as Alex Garland’s Warfare, Issa Lopez’s True Detective opposite Jodie Foster and Joe Barton’s Black Doves opposite Keira Knightley and Ben Wishaw.

It was recently confirmed that A24 and Alex Garland(Ex Machina, Civil War) were developing an Elden Ring film produced by George R. R. Martin, but it seems the project is moving quicker than many anticipated. According to a new report, the big-budget production is keen on adding one of the young stars of the studio's new action war epic that released earlier this year. Elden Ring is based on the FromSoftware title that was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, known for his own work on the classic action fighting franchise Dark Souls.
Deadline reports A24 and Alex Garland are eying Warfare star Kit Connor to lead the upcoming Elden Ring video game adaptation. The trade outlet does not specify if Connor has been offered the part, nor if the filming schedule lines up with the actor's upcoming work. However, they emphasize that both Garland and Connor are passionate about joining forces on Elden Ring.

Michael Gandolfini’s Transformative ‘Warfare’ Journey Included a Surprising Connection to His Father
A week before Christmas 2023, Michael Gandolfini was lying on the floor of his Airbnb in Los Angeles with his phone taped to the ceiling. He was attempting to video a self-tape for a scene that, as scripted, needed him on the ground, and with no one around that particular day to help, he improvised. Tape meet phone meet the ceiling.
It was unusual to get asked to audition so close to the holidays, and he didn’t have the ideal setup. But the project, Warfare, was one he didn’t want to pass up.
Based on the experiences of co-director Ray Mendoza’s time in the Navy SEALs, Warfare (out this weekend via A24) is a retelling of the day during the Battle of Ramadi in the Iraq War that saw Mendoza’s platoon attempt to evacuate two members of their team after they were severely wounded in an Ied explosion.

After telling a fictional, dystopian war story in “Civil War” last year, director Alex Garland is back with his next film, and this one gets a bit more real.
Hitting theaters on Friday, “Warfare” takes viewers on a mission with Navy Seals — one that’s based on an actual mission that co-director Ray Mendoza himself experienced (more on that in a moment). When things go sideways, the platoon must stand together and survive insurgent territory.
Here’s everything you need to know about the movie.
What is the release date?
“Warfare” releases nationwide on April 11, 2025.
Is it streaming?
Nope. As an A24 film, “Warfare” is only going to be in theaters for the time being. As part of A24’s output deal with Max the film will eventually be streaming on Max, and we’ll update this story when a streaming release date is announced.
For now, check your local listings to buy tickets.

It took Noah Centineo a few moments to finally get in position for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at Thursday night’s Warfare premiere because every step he took towards the camera led to another hug and tight embrace with one of his co-stars.
“We’ve all gotten quite close,” the 28-year-old actor explained of the bond formed after shooting the intense Iraq-set actioner from the co-writing and directing team of Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, the latter of whom’s harrowing experience as a U.S. Navy Seal inspired the A24 film. The cast became so close in fact that they shaved each other’s heads in preparation for a three-week boot camp and all got matching “Call on Me” tattoos inspired by the film’s opening scene. (Two actors declined the ink, sources confirmed.)

In 2024, the director of 28 Days Later released a new movie, the dystopian action thriller Civil War, which received positive reviews from the critics. One year later, he is back at it again, impressing the critics with his newest film, A24's Warfare.
Warfare wasn't solely directed by Garland, but also had Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza as co-director, and both are also credited as screenwriters. It's based on Mendoza's experience during the Iraq War as a former U.S. Navy Seal. Ahead of its Apr. 11 wide release in theaters, Warfare debuted with an impressive 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes out of 21 reviews.
Out of 27 reviews available on the review-aggregator website at the time of publishing, only two of them are negative, but they come from major publications: Deadline and Variety. The score might fluctuate as more reviews come in. Since the film is not out in theaters, there is no audience score.

Warfare is headed to theaters nationwide in a few weeks, but A24 has officially lifted the review embargo for the upcoming war thriller, and it seems it does not disappoint. Directed by Alex Garland (Civil War) and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, Warfare is a heart-pounding exploration of real-time warfare, and according to the latest reviews, it is a must-see in the loudest theaters near you.
As of this writing, Warfare is hovering around 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, with roughly 30 reviews counted thus far. Many critics have pointed out the visceral technical quality of the action sequences, as well as the performances by the ensemble cast. In 2024, Alex Garland smashed A24's worldwide box office record with the unflinching dystopian action movie Civil War. Now, a year on, Garland's battlefield is back, only this time it's even more realistic. Co-written and co-directed by Garland with real-life veteran Navy Seal Ray Mendoza, the first responses to the newest effort are in and are positively glowing. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Warfare has shot straight to success, earning a huge 91% approval rating from critics already, with that number expected to possibly climb within the coming days.
For Garland, a 91% critical score marks the second-best of his entire career, only missing out on 2014's Ex-Machina by 1%. The first reactions to Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s Warfare have hit social media, and the early consensus suggests the film is an intense, brutal and harrowing work that must be experienced in theaters.
Warfare is a real-time and immersive retelling of a battle during the 2006 Iraq War, and follows a team of Navy SEALs coming under heavy fire as they are trapped inside a house.
In addition to co-directing the feature, Mendoza, an Iraq War veteran, co-wrote the script for Warfare with Garland and the film largely is based on Mendoza’s memories of the conflict. Warfare is Garland’s follow-up to the much-talked about 2024 release Civil War, that was A24’s most expensive film ever to produce and also the studio’s second most successful release at the global box office after Oscar-winner Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Much like the equally realistic and harrowing Black Hawk Down...

The superheroes of Marvel Comics have been headlining movies for decades. We're not just talking about the last few decades, either, when the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to fruition. The juggernaut franchise, created by Marvel Studios, has broken every box office record there is to break, grossing a collective $31 billion (and counting!) in the years since its 2008 inception with Iron Man. 35 movies into that franchise, it shows no signs of slowing down.
But again, the heroes of Marvel Comics were on our screens long before that, with beloved characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men flying the flag for comic book movies at a time when there weren't all that many. And, before that, Captain America was headlining his own TV movies, while Man-Thing became a horror legend.
Even in today's day and age, Marvel Studios doesn't make all of the movies involving Marvel characters. 20th Century Fox produced the Fantastic Four...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter is the latest (and hopefully the last) Ssu film to bomb at the box office. The superhero genre in general and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe in particular have lost millions of dollars recently. However, fans would be surprised to know that neither Kraven and Madame Web nor The Marvels are among the 10 lowest-grossing films of the 21st century.

The director behind one of A24's biggest projects has finally announced the theatrical release date for his next film. Alex Garland, known for the dystopian Civil War as well as sci-fi staples like Ex Machina, has created another unmitigated depiction of violence and humanity in the upcoming Warfare, which is set to debut in the United States on April 11.
Writtena and directed alongside war veteran Ray Mendoza, and based on his experiences as a Navy Seal during the Iraq War, Warfare follows a platoon of Navy SEALs during a mission through insurgent territory in 2006. The film has been described as a brutally visceral close-up of the violence and suffering intrinsic to active warzones, informed by the harrowing perspective of someone who has actually witnessed such atrocities. Reservation Dogs star and Canadian/Oji-Cree actor D'Pharoh Woon-a-Tai portrays the film's fictional version of Ray Mendoza, accompanied by an ensemble cast that includes Will Poulter,...

Daniel Craig's new A24 movie is now available to watch at home following his Golden Globe nomination. The English actor is widely known to audiences for his portrayal of the impossibly suave secret agent in five James Bond movies – Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die. Since his final portrayal in 2021, the 007 franchise has been conducting an exhaustive search for a new James Bond actor, allowing Craig to branch out and experiment with other roles.
Other than Bond, Craig is best known for his portrayal of the Southern sleuth, Benoit Blanc, in Rian Johnson's Knives Out movies, including the original 2019 film, its 2022 sequel Glass Onion, with a third, Wake Up Dead Man, on the way in 2025. Luca Guadagnino released two films in 2024, and coming off the energetic “Challengers” was the more introspective “Queer.” The filmmaker’s latest stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized stand-in for author William S. Burroughs, whose slender novel the movie is based on.
The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and later played the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. A24 acquired the domestic distribution rights to the movie, with Mubi releasing the movie internationally.
But how can you watch Guadagnino’s latest? Read on to find out.
Is “Queer” streaming?
After being released in theaters last November and December, “Queer” is now finally available to rent on Digital. The film will eventually be streaming on Max due to an output deal between the streamer and A24, but a streaming release date has not yet been revealed. “Queer” will also be released on Blu-ray in April.

Henry Cavill's best movies and TV shows show the amazing rise to fame the actor has had as well as the promise the rest of his career holds in store. Born in St Helier, Jersey, Cavill made his feature movie debut in the period adventure movie The Count of Monte Cristo, establishing himself in the business and leading to roles in smaller projects. However, the role that took Cavill from a relatively unknown performer to a household name was Superman in Zack Snyder's first Dceu movie, Man of Steel.
Though Superman is still the role most fans associate with Cavill, he has continued to prove himself capable of shedding that reputation with other terrific and fun roles. While there are plenty of famous actors with new movies coming out in 2025, the most exciting films to watch will be the ones featuring upcoming actors who are making their mark in film and television. Though few of these performers are new to the industry, in the past few years, they've been highlighted for their work in unique projects that have catapulted them into greater fame and demand. Touching upon every genre and niche of filmmaking, these actors have demonstrated their flexibility and interests in working across different fields and will be seen in innovative new works.
There are many exciting movies being released and upcoming TV shows returning in 2025 that will showcase the skills of new talent instead of retreading the abilities of actors who have been seen many times before. One year after creating a fictionalized civil war inside the United States, “Civil War” filmmaker Alex Garland has his eyes on a historical conflict. Garland and co-writer and co-director Ray Mendoza, an Iraq War veteran, are behind the new film “Warfare,” a real-time war film based on “the memory of the people who lived it.”
The project, which was announced earlier this year, is set during the 2006 Iraq War and focuses on “a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of US forces through insurgent territory.”
In keeping with classic war films of yesteryear – including classics like “The Thin Red Line,” “Saving Private Ryan,” and “Black Hawk Down,” Garland and Mendoza have enlisted an all-star cast of internet-approved young actors, including Emmy nominees D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai and Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo,...

A24 recently released a trailer for Alex Garland’s new movie, ‘Warfare,’ which he co-directed with Ray Mendoza.
This film is a departure from the dystopian themes of Garland’s previous work, ‘Civil War,’ and instead transports viewers to the intense battlegrounds of 2006 Iraq. The film’s release is scheduled for 2025, although an exact date is yet to be confirmed.
Unlike his earlier project which reimagined a second American Civil War, Garland, alongside Mendoza who also served as the military supervisor on ‘Civil War,’ crafted a narrative set against the backdrop of real historical events.
‘Warfare’ offers an in-depth look at the experiences of an American Navy SEALs platoon stationed within an Iraqi family’s home, providing a strategic vantage point to oversee US movements through hostile territories.
The storytelling in ‘Warfare’ is unique as it unfolds in real-time, reflecting the personal memories of those who were there.

By the time director Alex Garland’s film Civil War (you can read our review Here) was released earlier this year, Garland was already working on another war movie called Warfare, co-directing it with Ray Mendoza, who served as the military supervisor for Civil War. Garland and Mendoza also wrote the screenplay together. While Civil War was a dystopian film that imagined a new Civil War breaking out in the United States, Warfare is set during a real war, the story taking viewers back to 2006 Iraq. A24 will be giving the film a theatrical release sometime in 2025, but even though a specific release date has not yet been announced, the first trailer for the film has been unveiled. You can watch it in the embed above.
