Why HBO Max Canceled The Gossip Girl Reboot
Image
In 2021, a reboot of "Gossip Girl" said "Hey, Upper East Siders" again years after the original series wrapped up its run on The CW. Then, in January 2023, HBO Max canceled the series after just two seasons. So, what happened? In short: It wasn't good.

I'll circle back to the "not good" part momentarily, but before that, what did the series' creative team say about its rather sudden cancellation? In a statement that showrunner Joshua Safran posted on X (known as Twitter at the time), he elaborated on the cancellation across several posts. "So, here's the goss: it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce 'Gossip Girl' will not be continuing on HBO Max," he began.

"The EPs and I will forever be grateful to the network and studio for their faith and support; the writers for their devious brains and dexterous talent; the superstar...

The Institute Episode 2 review: "Shots for Dots" sees Luke begin testing
Image
Along with releasing the first episode of The Institute earlier today, MGM+ also treated viewers to the second episode, making for a double premiere. Episode 2 finally explains what the ominous-sounding "shots for dots" test is and what it entails. Outside of the lab, Luke (Joe Freeman) and Nicky (Fionn Laird) consider how they might plan an escape.

Back in the town of Dennison, we get to watch Ben Barnes run around charming people as Tim. He quickly becomes something of a small town hero, and the town's resident "crazy" lady Annie (Mary Walsh) finally mentions the Institute for the first time. For now, these two storylines remain distinct from one another, to the point that I'm not sure how certain elements will tie together, but more on that later.

The second episode is a step up over the first, though it does throw quite a lot of information at viewers...

Bmf Season 4 Review: Starz Series Finds Its Voice in 1990s Atlanta
Image
Bmf Season 4 arrives with the weight of empire on its shoulders, and this time, it’s carrying the load with surprising grace. The Black Mafia Family saga continues its dramatized dive into the real-life drug empire that Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory built from Detroit’s streets, now expanding into Atlanta’s glittering, dangerous 1990s landscape. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s executive production touch remains evident, but the series has matured beyond its initial growing pains into something more focused and emotionally resonant.

The casting coup of having Demetrius Flenory Jr. portray his own father adds an authenticity that no amount of method acting could achieve. There’s something both haunting and healing about watching a son embody his father’s criminal legacy on screen. This season pushes the timeline into the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period when hip-hop culture was exploding and Atlanta...

Topher's Death In The Night Shift - Why The Character Was Killed Off
Image
Ken Leung's character, Topher, is unexpectedly killed off in The Night Shift due to a drunk driving accident. Topher's absence creates a noticeable void in the show, as he was considered one of the best parts of the series. The reason for Topher's departure was because Ken Leung did not renew his contract for season 4 of The Night Shift.

In the TV show The Night Shift, Topher (Ken Leung) dies unexpectedly. The Night Shift is a medical drama TV series that ran from 2014 to 2017. The series follows the late-night staff of an emergency room at the San Antonio Memorial Hospital, where the three main doctors are former military members who are now working the overnight shift. Though the series was not the best-received medical drama ever, with the first season receiving 17% on Rotten Tomatoes and many critics pointing to overused clichés dragging it down, The Night Shift still ran for four seasons.

Why Gossip Girl's Reboot Ended After 2 Seasons (Was It Canceled?)
Image
The Gossip Girl reboot was canceled by HBO after two seasons, and despite efforts to find a new home, it seems unlikely season 3 will happen. The reboot received mixed and negative reactions from audiences and poor critical reviews, with a 38% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for the first season. While the reboot introduced diversity and explored unique relationship dynamics, it failed to capture the appeal of the original show.

HBO Max's Gossip Girl reboot only lasted two seasons before ending its run. The reboot of the immensely popular 2007 teen drama premiered in 2021, following a new generation of New York teens as Gossip Girl utilized the advancements of social media to make reputation-damaging hits on the group. Unlike the original, where the huge Gossip Girl reveal was that it was Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), the reboot let audiences in on who Gossip Girl was instantly: the teachers at Constance Billard School for Girls and St.

Gossip Girl: Series Showrunner Talks HBO Max Cancellation and Season Three Ideas
The new incarnation of Gossip Girl has been cancelled by HBO Max and will conclude this week. Series creator Josh Safran was saddened by the news, but not surprised. He suspected a cancellation was coming because of how expensive Gossip Girl is ("It takes a lot of money to look this good.") and because numerous HBO Max shows have been cancelled recently.

Starring Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak, and Savannah Lee Smith, the sequel series follows a new group of private school teens living on the Upper East Side. Hey, Upper Eastsiders: HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” has been canceled, and its series finale will drop on the streamer Jan. 26.

Season 1 premiered in July of 2021, and though it received a critics’ score of 38 on Rotten Tomatoes, Variety‘s Caroline Framke praised it, writing the show “does immediately address one issue that plagued the previous ‘Gossip Girl’ by flipping it on its head in a way that energizes the new one. This time, there will be no guessing games as to who Gossip Girl might be — at least not for the audience.” Season 2 jumped higher on Rotten Tomatoes, but based on fewer reviews.

The Gossip Girl Reboot Finally Has Its Blair & Serena Feud
Image
Warning! Spoilers about the Gossip Girl reboot season 2 episode 7 ahead. The Gossip Girl reboot struggled for a while to establish its own protagonist-led feud, but it might have found the perfect rivalry after 2021’s Gossip Girl season 2 episode 7. While the original Gossip Girl famously portrayed multiple outrageous showdowns, with Blair and Serena’s rifts usually causing more trouble than others, the Gossip Girl reboot hadn’t yet found the perfect pair of frenemies that could deeply care for each other and just as easily stab each other in the back. The Gossip Girl reboot season 1 initially tried to pin Julien (Jordan Alexander) and Zoya against one another, but their fights would stop as quickly as they started.

Then, 2021’s Gossip Girl season 2 saw Monet’s rise up Constance Billard’s food chain, which could have threatened Julien had she wished to actually oppose Monet. Instead, just like Julien’s rivalry with Zoya,...

Dress Me Down!"Gossip Girl star Jordan Alexander breaks down Julien's season 2 journey and addresses the potential of exploring darker sides in the back half of the season. As expected, things are only escalating in the latest season of Gossip Girl, both with the blogger herself and the people she writes about. A core relationship that gets shaken up in the latest episode is between Julien and Audrey. With Audrey still upset at Julien, the latter attempts to make amends, but in the world of Gossip Girl, that is easier said than done.

This only becomes another compilation of Julien's mission to become a better version of herself. With Gossip Girl still looming over Julien and her friends, the path she is looking for will be a hard battle for her. The last few episodes of Gossip Girl season 2 have...

The Gossip Girl Reboot Doesn't Know What to Do with Zoya Anymore
Image
When teachers Kate Keller (Tavi Gevinson), Jordan Glassberg (Adam Chanler-Berat), and Wendy (Megan Ferguson) decided to revive the Gossip Girl legacy made infamous by one Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), they needed a hook to lure people in. What the original Gossip Girl (the show and the website) excelled at was the rivalry between frenemies Serena (Blake Lively) and Blair (Leighton Meester), whose turbulent relationship shook the Upper East Side of New York on practically a daily basis. Trying to follow in the footsteps of their predecessor, the teachers found their own rivalry to focus on in HBO Max's Gossip Girl reboot: Queen of Constance Julien Calloway (Jordan Alexander) and her long-lost younger sister Zoya Lott (Whitney Peak).

Monet Is the Rival the Gossip Girl Reboot Needed
Image
Blair (Leighton Meester) and Serena (Blake Lively). When you think of the original Gossip Girl, those two characters and their incredibly complex friendship is the first thing to come to mind. When creating the reboot, how to create a friendship and rivalry as deep was something the writers chose to not only explore among themselves but also introduced this thread into the series as something the new Gossip Girl — teachers Kate (Tavi Gevinson), Jordan (Adam Chanler-Berat), and Wendy (Megan Ferguson) — had to consider. They had their It Girl and Queen of Constance, Julien (Jordan Alexander), but who would be on the opposite side of things? Their choice, Zoya (Whitney Peak), was clearly unfit for rival status and the first season suffered because of it. However, the second season has begun with Monet (Savannah Lee Smith) declaring war on her frenemy Julien, proving herself a much better rival in just two...

Gossip Girl Reboot's Julien & Zoya Rivalry Can't Beat Blair & Serena's
Image
Warning! Spoilers about the Gossip Girl reboot season 2 episodes 1 & 2 ahead. The Gossip Girl reboot protagonists, Julien and Zoya, have an interesting history as half-sisters coming from different worlds who want to finally get to know each other, but their rivalry cannot beat Blair and Serena’s. The Gossip Girl reboot season 1 functioned as an introduction for Zoya (Whitney Peak) to Julien’s (Jordan Alexander) world. While Julien was the only one of her friend group willing to welcome her into the fold because of her wish to know her at first, the others eventually warmed up to Zoya. Yet as soon as Zoya and Julien started spending time together, it became clear they had very different approaches to life.

Although Zoya found her place in Julien’s foreign world, their different attitudes already caused strife between Zoya and Julien in the Gossip Girl reboot season 1. That continued in its season...

The Gossip Girl Reboot Still Misses Its Own Georgina Sparks Threat
Image
Warning! Spoilers about Gossip Girl season 2 episodes 1 & 2 ahead. The Gossip Girl reboot season 2 started with Monet as a considerable threat to the Constance Billard school's balance, but despite everything she may try to achieve, she is no match for the original Gossip Girl infamous villain Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg). Although Monet de Haan's (Savannah Lee Smith) attempts to steal Julien Calloway's (Jordan Alexander) thunder and place were already introduced in Gossip Girl season 1, she only managed to garner her fellow students' attention in Gossip Girl season 2. Still, as much Monet may try to rule Constance Billard and St. Jude's schools and come up on top, she hasn't proved to be a Georgina Sparks-level threat.

Many villain-like figures appeared in the original Gossip Girl throughout its six seasons, but none caused as much damage as Georgina. While most villains aimed to further their agendas, Georgina brought chaos and lasting harm,...

The "Gossip Girl" Cast on Monet's Mean Girl Takeover in Season 2: "[She] Really Has Her Time to Shine"
Image
Spotted: there's a new "Gossip Girl" queen bee on the rise, and she's wasting no time kicking off her hostile takeover. After an explosive season one finale, HBO Max's "Gossip Girl" returned with more chaotic drama on Dec. 1, and this time around, Julien (Jordan Alexander) isn't the one running things over at Constance. In season two, she has a hard time holding onto her influence with her sidekick turned enemy Monet (Savannah Lee Smith) gunning for her No. 1 spot.

"We kind of wanted the cold hard b*tch that would not stop at anything to get to the top."

The last season of "Gossip Girl" attempted to redefine the infamous high school mean girl trope with some overly vindictive ploys orchestrated by Julien's minions Monet and Luna (Zión Moreno), but one of them has upgraded to a more sinister role in season two. With Luna and Julien on the...

Hey, Upper East Siders, Gossip Girl is back and she’s meaner than ever.

Ahead of the season two premiere of HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot, creator Joshua Safran and stars Grace Duah, Savannah Lee Smith, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock and Eli Brown stopped by NYC’s Prospect Park Nitehawk Cinema on Wednesday for an advance screening of the first episode and a Q&a.

During the conversation, the team opened up about what viewers can expect to see in season two, and Duah, who plays fan-favorite character Shan, didn’t hold back.

“This season is bigger, badder, but it’s mean,” she said. “I think that’s why you guys are in your seats, I think that’s why millions of people are in their seats at home. They want to see people be mean. And you’re gonna see that,...

Spotted: 38 Times the "Gossip Girl" Cast Showed Off Their Adorable Friendships
Outside of the delicious drama our favorite Upper East Siders deal with daily, what makes the "Gossip Girl" reboot great is the chemistry between the cast. It's easy to believe that Julien, Audrey, Monet, Luna, Max, Aki, and Obie are in fact longtime friends because their respective actors - Jordan Alexander, Emily Alyn Lind, Savannah Lee Smith, Zion Moreno, Thomas Doherty, Evan Mock, and Eli Brown - are also friends in real life. Even the addition of Whitney Peak's Zoya to the characters' group of friends feels genuine because of her magnetic connection with them.

Friendships and relationships (both old and new) are a big part of "Gossip Girl"'s dramatic second season, which kicked off on Dec. 1 - just take it from the cast. "Everything is a lot more intense this season, and we're kind of getting to see different sides and different stories from everybody," Peak tells Popsugar.

"Gossip Girl"'s Creator Reveals Why He Purposely Waited to Bring Georgina Sparks Back
Image
Haven't you heard? "Gossip Girl" is back for another chaotic season on HBO Max, and we've got all the deets.

The first season ends with a disastrous New Year's Eve celebration that leaves Julien (Jordan Alexander) cleaning up a major mess with her ex Obie (Eli Brown) and sister Zoya (Whitney Peak). Not to mention, the will-they-won't-they throuple with Aki (Evan Mock), Audrey (Emily Alyn Lind), and Max (Thomas Doherty) finally get the green light (though it surely won't be smooth sailing for them). The biggest surprise of them all, however - aside from Gossip Girl teaming up with Julien to expose everyone's dirty little secrets - is Monet (Savannah Lee Smith) gunning for the queen bee title now that Julien has turned over a new leaf, but there are plenty more shocking reveals ahead in season two, so buckle up for the ride.

"We waited until season two so by the time she arrives,...

‘Gossip Girl’ Boss Joshua Safran Breaks Down Season 2 Premiere And The Impending Return Of Georgina Sparks
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains plot details from the first two episodes of Gossip Girl Season 2.

Attention Upper East Siders: Gossip Girl is back, and she has some unfinished business.

Season 2 of the HBO Max series debuted Thursday with two episodes, which ease viewers nicely back into the drama at Constance Billard. Now that we’ve had some time to acquaint ourselves with this new cast of super rich kids and their secrets, Season 2 will show us “the kids became this way for a reason,” creator and executive producer Joshua Safran told Deadline.

“Essentially what would happen in the first Gossip Girl was the first half of the season would be, ‘These kids are disasters and they’re destroying each other.’ And in the second half of every season, we know the reason is because of their parents,” Safran said, explaining that the two-season story arc is mirrored after one,...

‘Gossip Girl’ Returns: Where We Left the Upper East Siders
Penn Badgley, Blake Lively, Taylor Momsen, Leighton Meester, Jessica Szohr, Chace Crawford, and Ed Westwick in Gossip Girl (2007)
Welcome back, Gossip Girl followers. The teen drama is returning with Season 2 on December 1, almost exactly a year after the Season 1 finale started streaming on HBO Max. If you need a crash course on the latest Constance Billard chaos — or if you haven’t even seen HBO Max’s reboot of the original CW series — here’s what went down in Gossip Girl Season 1. The new Gossip Girl picks up nearly a decade after the original left off, but this time, the anonymous tattler exposing secrets at the tony Constance Billard isn’t a student. It’s a cohort of faculty members led by English teacher Kate Keller (Tavi Gevinson), who resurrected Gossip Girl as an Instagram account to turn the tables on the private school’s spoiled students. One of the revived Gossip Girl’s first reveals is that popular Constance Billard student and influencer Julien Calloway (Jordan Alexander) paid to get her half-sister,...

Gossip Girl Season 2 Review: Like She Never Left, The Reboot Maintains Its Season 1 Momentum
Image
It might seem like we're taking the same ride we did in season 1, but season 2 of HBO Max's "Gossip Girl" reboot doubles down on the things it does well and expands on those strengths to bolster its mean-girl vibe to new heights. It's just as fun and flirts as much with rebellion and status as it ever was and did — even during the original 2007 series — and it effectively raises the stakes this season, which is really as much as you can ask of a show that is the epitome of entertainment for the sake of being entertained. In the early days at least, the original series was looked at as just that type of product and nothing more.

The "Gossip Girl" of today, however, always has a lot to say about societal issues its characters benefit from and contribute to — but it has yet to lose the salacious spark that...

‘Gossip Girl’ Season 2 Trailer: Georgina Sparks Pulls the Plug on Constance Billard’s Morals

You know you love Georgina Sparks.

Michelle Trachtenberg is back as iconic villain Georgina in Season 2 of HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” revival series. The new Gg, Kate (Tavi Gevinson), comes face to face with Og baddie Georgina after she sneaks into her apartment for a moment of reckoning. As Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” plays in the background, it’s clear Season 2 will be a battle to the social death.

The role marks Trachtenberg’s return to acting after four years, following her voice-acting turn in TV series “Human Kind Of.” Her last on-camera role was in 2016 TV movie “Sister Cities.” Trachtenberg formerly played Georgina a decade ago, with her final “Gossip Girl” appearance in 2012. The character’s son, Milo, played by Azhy Robertson, appeared in the first season of the new “Gossip Girl” as the hacker Zoya (Whitney Peak) hires to take down her...
