Netflix Is Releasing a Docuseries About Women in Hip-Hop - Watch the Trailer
Image
Women in hip-hop are getting a major spotlight from Netflix next month in a new limited docuseries. Per the streamer, "Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" aims to recall the history, impact, and influence of women in the culture, as well as "their role in the genre's 50 years by reinserting them into the canon where they belong: at the center, from day one to present day."

The trailer, which was released on July 26, plainly states that "Black women are crushing it in hip-hop right now," from "dominating the charts" to "being the ultimate influencers of the culture." So, in their own words, the docuseries gives women in hip-hop the floor to share their stories and honor the sisterhood that's contributed to their success.

The Netflix series has four installments that each feature a parade of iconic women rappers and originators, such as Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, Rah Digga,...

Hulu’s Tracee Ellis Ross-Hosted ‘Hair Tales’ Is Storytelling by and for Black Women
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The Hair Tales, streaming on Hulu in collaboration with Onyx and OWN, quilts together the varied relationships Black women have with their hair, celebrating the collective experiences they share.

Fittingly, it was produced by Culture House, a Black and brown woman-owned production company focused on storytelling for film and television with particular political or cultural resonance.

The six-episode docuseries, executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, Tracee Ellis Ross and Michaela Angela Davis, centers and celebrates six different Black women — Issa Rae, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Chika, Marsai Martin, Chloe Bailey and Oprah Winfrey — by exploring their unique yet similar understandings of beauty and identity through their hair. Ross also serves as host and is joined by a chorus of academics, hairdressers and cultural icons.

“We really wanted to express the fullness and the expansiveness of our identities — all the different ways that we wear our hair,...

How Culture House, the Women-Led Production Company behind ‘Hair Tales,‘ Is Challenging Hollywood’s Approach to Inclusion
Image
Audiences have embraced all of Oprah Winfrey’s signature looks from the fluffed pixie to the long under bob, and now her signature curls. But they may not have known about Winfrey’s lifelong hair journey that led to her current look or even what drove Issa Rae to appreciate and love her natural hair after going completely bald. Now both stories are being told in Hulu’s upcoming docuseries, “The Hair Tales,” which premieres on Oct. 22 on Hulu, as well as OWN.

When Onyx Collective president Tara Duncan and producer Michaela Angela Davis asked Black, Brown and woman-owned production company Culture House to take on the project, founding partners Raeshem Nijhon, Nicole Galovski and Carri Twigg said they recognized the “ripeness” of this story and jumped at the opportunity.

Nijhon and Twigg signed on to serve as executive producers on the series alongside Winfrey and Tracee Ellis Ross, who also hosts all six episodes.

Culture House Co-Founders Want to Be Hollywood’s ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Checkpoint’
Carri Twigg
When Raeshem Nijhon, Carri Twigg and Nicole Galovski co-founded the production company Culture House four years ago, they insisted that their business stand out in Hollywood as an inclusive network of creatives that advocates for “healthy competition” and a community-based approach to filmmaking.

Already, the trio’s efforts are bearing fruit. The company is producing the upcoming “Growing Up,” a Disney+ docuseries conceived by Brie Larson that profiles of 10 American adolescents, and “The Hair Tales,” an exploration of Black women’s hair featuring Oprah Winfrey and Tracee Ellis Ross that will stream on Hulu through the Onyx Collective.

While Nijhon comes from a background in cinéma vérité documentary work in India and Galovski began as a production assistant, Twigg joined the two (who had long partnered with each other) after serving as a special assistant to former president Barack Obama and public engagement director under Joe Biden. The trio bonded...

Brie Larson Says Overcoming Shame Inspired Her to Create "Growing Up"
Image
Brie Larson opened up about the personal meaning behind her new docuseries, "Growing Up," in an Aug. 3 Disney+ virtual panel at the TCA summer press tour. The show follows a cohort of young adults, focusing on one person's story in each episode. With episodes that cover everything from grief to first loves, "Growing Up" has something for everyone. For Larson, who executive produced the show and directed one episode, the universal nature of shame inspired her to make the series.

"I realized that I was living with shame about who I was, and I was noticing how I was presenting myself to the world - either shielding certain parts of myself, and living in fear," she said. "And I was like, if I'm feeling this way, I'm feeling this way. . . That set me on this path, for years, of asking people who I was close to: What do you feel shameful about?...

The series — which will premiere Sept. 8 on Disney+ Day — uses narrative, experimental and documentary filmmaking to follow one casted individual, a “hero” ages 18-22, as they tell their story. The Tribeca Film Festival announced its 2020 Shorts Program lineup Thursday including the world premiere of DreamWorks Animation’s To Gerard and projects with Benedict Cumberbatch, Dennis Quaid and Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

As cancellations and postponements rock the entertainment landscape, Tribeca said it’s still a go. “We are tracking the COVID19 (coronavirus) situation closely. As of right now, there are no direct impacts to our festival.” a spokesperson said Thursday.

The shorts roster for the 19th annual fest has 64 shorts from 20 countries, including 46 world premieres, selected from a record 6,100 submissions, organizers said.

Whoopi Goldberg again curated the animated portion. And back for a second year are two portrayals of diverse women from the Queen Collective by Procter & Gamble in partnership with Queen Latifah.
