It is common knowledge that Riverdale, and many of its major characters, is based on the Archie Comics. However, many might not know the great lengths the writers went to include as many characters from the comics as possible. While popular Archie Comics characters like Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead Jones are well-known as iconic characters, there are many characters in the comics that aren't as well known.
Many of these lesser-known characters ended up appearing in Riverdale, which really expresses how much effort was put into the early seasons of the show as an adaptation of the Archie Comics. With these characters being so unknown, many Riverdale viewers may have assumed that they were original characters, but these Riverdale characters can be traced back to the comics, even though their Riverdale counterparts may be vastly different.

Riverdale has become somewhat of an infamous show in pop culture. Despite being one of the last popular teen dramas to follow the 22-episode format, with seven seasons to its name, most regard it as a very bizarre series. Based on the Archie Comics, the series follows Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead Jones in the small town of Riverdale. Unlike the lighthearted comics, the series features dark themes such as murder mysteries, gang wars, cults, and supernatural elements.
While the show is often remembered for going off the rails very early on, many will remember that the first season of the series was rather good, following a simple murder mystery plot. Riverdale's series finale explores the at-times ridiculousness of its source material, offering a fun and meta-filled conclusion. The core four characters of Betty, Veronica, Archie, and Jughead end up in a polyamorous "quad," while other fan-favorite pairings also stick. The Riverdale gang drifts apart over time, offering a heartbreaking twist that reflects the show's nostalgic approach and the reality of growing up.
After six years, seven seasons, and all the epic highs and lows of high school football, the Riverdale series finale finally reveals what happens to Archie and his friends from the titular "town with pep." That's exactly what makes the show fun, and it's also what's helped the Archie Comics publisher endure for nearly 85 years. In an inspired twist that feels in line with the rest of...

Riverdale star Mädchen Amick recently shared that Archie and the gang will remain stuck in the 1950s for the remainder of the final season.
During an interview with Decider, the actor -- who stars as Betty Cooper's mother Alice in The CW drama series -- revealed that the entire seventh season takes place in the fifties. "No, we don’t get out of the 1950s. So I guess maybe that is a big spoiler," said Amick. "I will say you do experience the characters in different… dimensions, that you get to see a lot of closures that are outside of the 1950s. I can tease it that way. I think that’s saying enough."

The show must go on, but for Archie and his friends, the musical isn't the light-hearted tale they want to sing about. The show was more like Kevin's projected fantasy than a grounded musical.
Based on everyone's reaction on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 14, it was clear they weren't jiving with it.
Riverdale's last musical ended its legacy with a round of original songs. However, the plots and teen drama seemed to be retreading themselves, stuck in a neverending refrain of typical Riverdale tropes.
Riverdale musicals always find a way to tie back to the main plot. Even Carrie the Musical on Riverdale Season 2 Episode 18 found a way to connect back to Cheryl's issues with Penelope and Alice's fear of potentially losing Betty.
These nods were great because they gave more weight to the lyrics and what teens were performing. "Archie the Musical" is the most meta version of this style...

Riverdale's final season has pushed its characters from their adult states back to a teenage facsimile -- only this time, they're stuck in the 1950s.
For some, the '50s were the reset they'd been hoping to see from Riverdale, which can offer fresh, campy storytelling. For others, Riverdale's foray into the '50s has fallen hopelessly flat.
Riverdale Season 5 starts with a seven-year time jump that aged all the characters from high school seniors to aimless twenty-somethings. Divulging in more mature plots and relationships that the high school years hadn't seen before, the time jump allowed the characters to continue to grow.
Riverdale Season 6 moved into the supernatural, with the season culminating in Riverdale Season 6 Episode 22, "Chapter One Hundred and Seventeen: The Night Of The Comet," wherein the residents of Riverdale were faced with a new kind of peril as a comet hurdled towards them, threatening to wipe them...

The CW’s Riverdale has been one wild ride. Our beloved Riverdalians — Archie Andrews (Kj Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan), and newcomer Tabitha Tate (Erinn Westbrook) — have fought back against serial killers, crime bosses, and a demon from the alternate dimension of Rivervale to attempt to keep their town safe. Unfortunately, the series hasn’t always known how to handle its large ensemble of supporting characters, which has, at times, dramatically impacted the quality of the show. As a series regular for all but the first season of the drama, this is especially true for Kevin Keller (Casey Cott), who the series has never known what to do with, even well into the final season as the characters continue their “new” lives in the 1950s.

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Season 7 Episode 1 of Riverdale, “Chapter One Hundred Eighteen: Don’t Worry Darling.”] Happy days are here again. Or more like Happy Days. On jingle-jangle, that is. Because Riverdale returned tonight for its seventh and final season doing the time warp back to the ’50s. Thanks to the Bailey’s Comet catastrophe that was seemingly thwarted at the end of the supernatural-infused Season 6, our gang was transported to the era of James Dean’s death, Emmett Till’s trial, and hot-rodding teens, with only Jughead (Cole Sprouse) clued-in to the mix-up. The rest were busy being typical teens (again), with the head-turning arrival of transfer student and Hollywood kid Veronica (Camila Mendes), the growing civil-rights movement, and the storybook romance of high-school sweethearts Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and … future gay icon Kevin Keller (Casey Cott)? Yeah, things are a little different this season. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is that Betty remains...

"...picking up where last season ended, 'Jughead Jones' (Cole Sprouse) finds himself trapped in the 1950's. He has no idea how he got there, nor how to get back to the present.
"His friends are no help, as they are living seemingly authentic lives, similar to their classic 'Archie Comics' counterparts, unaware that they've ever been anywhere but the 1950's.
"'Archie Andrews' (Kj Apa) is the classic all-American teen, coming of age, getting into trouble, and learning life-lessons. 'Betty Cooper' (Lili Reinhart) is the girl next door, starting to question everything about her perfect life - including her controlling mother 'Alice' (Madchen Amick), 'Veronica Lodge' (Camila Mendes) is a Hollywood starlet who moved to 'Riverdale' under mysterious circumstances.
"'Cheryl Blossom' (Madelaine Petsch) is the 'Queen Bee' with a withering wit and a secret longing.

The end is approaching for Riverdale.
The seventh and final season premieres Wednesday, March 29, on The CW, and if the first trailer is any indication, the trippy storytelling that made the first few seasons a success is making a comeback.
When Riverdale Season 6 concluded in 2022, the gang was transported back to the 1950s, which looks to be the setting for the final chapter.
In true Riverdale fashion, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) appears to be the only person who knows what's happening in this new timeline.
"We were all sent back in time," Jughead tells his friends.
"We need to get back."
However, his friends are far too interested in spending their time at school than unraveling the mysteries surrounding their lives.
"Jughead, we're juniors in high school. Life's good," Archie (Kj Apa) says.
"Why would we want to go back? ... We are not from the future!"

Riverdale season 7 has added new cast members, including a new twin for Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch). The CW series, which is a gritty reboot of the iconic characters of Archie Comics, has used Cheryl's twin brother Jason (Trevor Stines) as a plot point from the very beginning, as season 1 centered on solving his murder. Later on, the series' signature twists and turns included the revelation that Cheryl may have had a secret triplet named Julian who was absorbed in the womb and at one point supposedly possessed a haunted doll.
Per TVLine, two new cast members have been added to Riverdale's impending season 7, which will be the final season of the series. First and foremost is Nicholas Barasch, who will be playing a newly alive Julian Blossom, who is a bullying teenager at the high school attended by Archie and company. Exclusive: The CW has expanded the cast of Riverdale for the upcoming seventh and final season. Nicholas Barasch (Hadestown) and Karl Walcott (Le Chalet) have been tapped for major recurring roles on the Archie Comics series, developed and executive produced by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Barasch will play Julien Blossom, your classic high school red-headed bully. He’s preppy, rich, and extremely entitled. Handsome, athletic, and cocky, he always gets his way, but in the rare times he doesn’t—like with Veronica—he makes life miserable for everyone around him. He often butts heads with his twin sister, but is also an antagonist to all of our teen characters, most especially Archie.
Walcott is Clay Walker, a teen renaissance man. He is studious, artistic, well-read, and well-traveled. An Army brat, Clay comes from a loving family and is a champion for social justice. He is very open-minded in his art and his sexuality.

New images from Riverdale season 7 reveal that the characters are still stuck in the 1950s. The series, which is a gritty reboot of the classic Archie Comics, has been running on The CW since 2017 and is preparing to premiere its seventh and final season in Spring 2023. This season will follow the shocking twist ending of season 6, which saw Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) use her newfound powers to prevent a comet from destroying the town of Riverdale, inadvertently sending the entire town back into the 1950s with only Jughead (Cole Sprouse) remembering their present-day lives.
Entertainment Weekly shared a collection of first-look images from Riverdale's upcoming final season as part of their 2023 preview. Riverdale Season 6 Episode 13
“Those dark secrets that we all carry in our hearts, I am those secrets…”
Riverdale continues to be anything but dull.
With the apocalypse looming, the series’ latest episode focused on…overdue library books. Yes friends, you read that correct. The next step in Percival Pickens’ plan to destroy the town and then the world involved pestering Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Cheryl and Reggie to return books they checked out from the Riverdale Public Library days, sometimes years, ago. Turns out that Percival is planning to close and demolish the town’s only library to make room for a hotel that will be required to, er, lodge all the guests that his new railroad will bring in. .
Before he closes the library, he wants all of its books back. Jughead rightfully surmises that this is because Percival seeks to control the knowledge...

Riverdale Season 6 Episode 11
“Pop’s has endured for a reason, it’s Riverdale’s anchor.”
Every now and again a moment of television comes along that is so transcendent that it immediately embeds itself into the fabric of our pop culture consciousness: Walter White running around in his tighty whities in the Breaking Bad pilot, Six Feet Under‘s “Breathe Me” death montage, and now, Tabitha Tate drinking a milkshake from the Holy Grail in the latest episode of Riverdale.
Yes friends, this is a thing that actually occurred.
Why? The why is not important at this point. As I’ve said before in my breakdowns of the show the reasoning behind Riverdale in inconsequential as the show is an island unto itself.. Whee!
The appearance of the Grail was a throwaway moment in the episode, which shows you the level of confidence that the writing staff current has.

Sabrina Spellman is making another appearance in the crime-filled town of Riverdale.
TV Line is reporting that Kiernan Shipka has closed a deal to return, marking the second Chilling Adventures of Sabrina crossover.
Details are scarce on how long Sabrina will be sticking around this time, but if you watch Riverdale online, you know Cheryl could probably use a witch in her corner.
Throughout recent episodes of Riverdale Season 6, Cheryl has been possessed by the spirit of her ancestor Abigail.
This very different iteration of Cheryl has been thinking of plans to cause mass destruction in Riverdale ... and beyond.

“It’s a golden age to be an Archie Comics fan right now,” says company president Mike Pellerito with infectious enthusiasm, adding “I just can’t imagine a better time.”
The declaration is more than accurate, as the independently owned publisher is celebrating its 80th anniversary with the massive CW hit Riverdale entering its sixth season. Despite the TV success, comics are still Archie’s bread and butter, from the digest reprints that beg for impulse buys at the supermarket to a series of innovative titles that have seen Archie and his “pals and gals” become critical darlings.

Betty can't ever escape her Final Girl status. Based on Riverdale Season 5 Episode 13 alone, she has the ingenuity and skills to take down every vengeful killer who gets in her way.
The Lonely Highway killer was no exception. Even with a chainsaw in hand, he couldn't defeat Riverdale's version of Nancy Drew.
But did the battle with the mysterious trucker live up to the expectations? Or, did it leave us wanting more?
As I mentioned in previous reviews, Tabitha and Betty were an unlikely great pair. They balanced each other, albeit with some silence and distance from Betty. (She really needs to let someone in and trust again.)
Glenn would've been a good ally had he not wasted his efforts in the wrong places. Going after the escorts instead of the serial killer trucker will yield him zero results. Anyone with any sense of logic would know this.
Seriously, how...

This year's musical episode of Riverdale is shaping up to be the best one yet, with Hedwig and the Angry Inch!
That scream you just heard that shook the heavens? That was my response to learning that Hedwig and the Angry Inch will be the focus of this year's musical episode of Riverdale.
Originally performed Off-Broadway in 1998, the show, created by Stephen Trask and John Cameron Mitchell (who stars in the titular role), chronicles the hilarious and poignant experiences of Hedwig Schmidt -- a genderqueer performer whose band is on a tour of dive venues that piggybacks the itinerary of Hedwig's rock star ex.
It's about a whole lot more than that though, and part of the fun of Hedwig and the Angry Inch is how it peels back the layers of Hedwig's story literally and figuratively. What results is a captivating look at love and identity,...

Riverdale is getting another musical episode!
The CW has confirmed that Kevin Keller will lead the production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Wednesday, April 8 at 8/7c.
“After the previous debacles of Carrie and Heathers, Kevin has decided to revive Riverdale High’s tradition of hosting a variety show,” reads the episode’s official synopsis.
“But when Mr. Honey forbids him from performing a number from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Kevin and our gang rally against their principal — by each performing a number from Hedwig, turning the variety show into a full-fledged musical that, as always, reflects our characters’ inner lives and struggles."
"Amidst the drama, one forbidden ‘showmance’ begins to blossom.”
“Musical episodes have become a yearly tradition on Riverdale, but this year, we wanted to try something different,” creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement.

Hedwig meets Jughead? Even with today’s anything-goes, mash-up approach to pop culture, nobody saw this one coming. The frothy CW series Riverdale will build its annual musical episode around Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the stage production that premiered back in 1998 with its rousing tale of a genderqueer East German glam rocker.
Hedwig, the rock musical that featured the music and lyrics of Stephen Trask and book by John Cameron Mitchell, will be the core story component in the April 8 episode of Riverdale, the CW series based on classic Archie Comics characters.
The episode description from Riverdale producers: “After the previous debacles of Carrie and Heathers, Kevin Keller has decided to revive Riverdale High’s tradition of hosting a Variety Show! But when Mr. Honey forbids him from performing a number from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Kevin and our gang rallies against their principal—by each performing a number from Hedwig,...
