‘The Decameron’ Adaptation: Release Date, Cast, Photos, Teaser Trailer
Image
You are cordially invited to a wine-soaked sex romp in the Italian countryside.

From creator and showrunner Kathleen Jordan — and loosely inspired by the iconic short story collection of the same name — comes the soapy dark comedy The Decameron, streaming on Netflix now.

The series examines the all-too-timely theme of class struggles in the season of a pandemic, as a cast of misfits tries to outlast the bubonic plague pandemic in 1348 Florence. The Decameron stars Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Tanya Reynolds, and more.

Read on for everything you need to know about the eight-episode series.

First published in Italy in the mid-14th century, Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron tells the story of a group of nobles and their servants sheltering in the grand Villa Santa outside Florence as the Black Death rages in 1348. To pass the time, they take turns...

Recreating the Magic: Why the 'Harry Potter' Reboot Might Just Be the Show We Need
Image
Sorcery stones, sorting hats, and childhood nostalgia—there’s no doubt that HBO’s upcoming 'Harry Potter' reboot is making waves and creating magic. Slated for a 2026 release, this adaptation isn’t just a return to Hogwarts—it’s a bold, decade-long dive into one of the most iconic fantasy worlds ever created. But the question remains: are we ready to revisit this beloved universe, wand in hand, with fresh faces and a modern lens?

The new series, confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2023, aims to retell J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga as a “faithful adaptation,” stretched across multiple seasons.

The story of 'The Boy Who Lived' will unfold over the course of ten years, allowing more room for nuance, character development, and magical world-building that even the original films couldn’t fully capture.

And hopefully this extended format will also allow for fan input, leading to elements that resonate...

A Touch of Humor and a Horde of Rats Elevate TV’s Best Opening Titles
Image
You can overhear a lot of weird things walking through the park, but an excited, sudden exclamation of “What if it was a horde of rats?!” is definitely up there. Yet the reason, in this particular case, wasn’t an ominous one: It was part of the brainstorming process for the opening title sequence for Netflix’s recent (excellent) adaptation of “The Decameron.”

Mark Bashore and Katrina Crawford were the parkgoers in question and the creative directors of Plains of Yonder. The studio began as a design firm in Seattle and developed an Emmy-nominated knack for crafting opening titles for television series — something they say lots of people assume gets scripted by the writers on a given series, but in actuality, creative studios like theirs get brought in and work with the showrunners to execute. They’ve spent a couple of decades now crafting striking opening titles for shows from...

‘The Decameron’ Cast on Making Netflix’s Black Death-Set “Wine-Soaked Sex Romp”
Image
Netflix’s latest dark comedy The Decameron answers the question: How would a group of wealthy people, isolated from the rest of the world due to a pandemic, act? If that premise is sounding eerily relevant to the last few years, it’s no coincidence.

Showrunner Kathleen Jordan was inspired by what the world had experienced during the early days of Covid-19, and by “the concept of examining the slice of life moment of a pandemic.” Loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection set during the Black Death, Jordan found a way to tell this story to a modern audience.

A jam-packed ensemble cast — including Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Jessica Plummer and Tanya Reynolds — comes together in an Italian villa in an attempt to wait out the plague. While the concept itself doesn’t immediately read comedy, through Jordan’s unique tone and the acting, the...

The Decameron Creator Kathleen Jordan & Star Tony Hale On Crafting A Dark Comedy About The Black Death
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag. The Decameron season 1 on Netflix follows nobles and servants during the Black Death, diving into class divisions in a comedic way. Creator Kathleen Jordan uses dark comedy to process historical events like the Black Death, finding humor in dark times. Tony Hale's character, Sirisco, sees growth in the series, adding depth and humor to the chaotic villa setting.

The Decameron Season 1 consists of eight episodes and is currently available to stream on Netflix. Set in 1348, the dark comedy follows a group of nobles and servants who seek refuge in a grand villa during the Black Death. However, given their different upbringings and opposing ideologies, it doesn't take long for the characters to clash with one another during their stay.

Kathleen Jordan serves as the creator of the series, while Tony Hale plays the "eager-to-please" steward of the villa, Sirisco. Although the...

Netflix's Take on The Decameron Is Surprisingly Close to the Text
Image
Quick Links The Decameron Is About Social Conventions Responses to the Plague in The Decameron Have a Lot of Truth Behind Them Humor and Sex Are at the Core of Bocaccio's Decameron

Named for the 14th-century work by Giovanni Boccaccio, Netflix's The Decameron tells the story of a group of Italians trying to escape the torments of the bubonic plague. The Decameron on Netflix isn't the streaming service's first foray into the Middle Ages, and it veers from what Boccaccio wrote in many ways. However, there are echoes of truth and honesty in The Decameron that attest to the spirit of its namesake. The Decameron does not recount exactly what happened in Boccaccio's work. Rather, the show adapts the source material to be relevant and eerily familiar to viewers who have their own experiences with life during a pandemic.

Boccaccio's 100 short stories and 10 storytellers are the inspiration for The Decameron's eight episodes.

How ‘The Decameron’ Showrunner Kathleen Jordan Found the Right Tone for the Plague-Set Comedy
Image
“I was inspired by the concept of examining the slice of life moment of a pandemic,” The Decameron showrunner Kathleen Jordan says to The Hollywood Reporter about the inspiration behind the new Netflix show.

The dark comedy, which released on the streaming platform last week, is loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection set during the Black Death. The Decameron finds a group of characters, both nobles and servants, making their way to a villa in the Italian countryside in an attempt to wait out the plague.

While a plague-set show isn’t typically a touted as a “wine-soaked sex romp,” as The Decameron is, the Zosia Mamet and Tony Hale-led show manages to land laughs during a bleak time period.

“I wish that I could say there was a lot of intentionality behind it, but I think if you were to ask me to write a space drama,...

What to watch this weekend July 26, 2024: TV awards contenders
Image
I hope you’ve stretched and are well hydrated, because you’re going to need it for the marathon of TV that lies ahead. Friday marks the official beginning of the 2024 Paris Olympics, which means we’ve got more than two weeks of impressive physical feats across 32 sports and 45 disciplines that will inspire you while putting your athletic prowess to shame.

It all begins with the opening ceremony, which for the first time in history is taking place outside of a stadium. The parade of athletes that is the centerpiece of the event will occur on the Seine, with each nation’s delegates having their own boat. It is unclear whether the size of the watercraft is determined by the size of the delegation, but it would probably be funnier that way. LeBron James and Coco Gauff are the flag bearers for the United States.

Tony Hale Talks the Decameron and Relating to Sirisco
Image
We all have that friend — or we are that friend — who’s always being treated like a doormat. For Tony Hale, who’s famous for playing lovably codependent characters in comedies like Veep and Arrested Development, his role in The Decameronis an opportunity to take that neediness to new heights (and lows).

“The word for me was desperation,” Hale tells Tudum, summing up the best description for his character Sirisco. When The Decameron opens in 1348, the pestilence has hit Italy hard, and a group of wealthy nobles and their servants run off to a rural getaway for an escape … and to party. Catering to the guests’ every whim, while hiding that his master actually died of the bubonic plague before their arrival, is Hale’s Sirisco.

Says showrunner and creator Kathleen Jordan, “Oh man. I was very, very excited to be able to talk to Tony about the chance...

The Decameron Season 2: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

Only a few main characters survived season 1, and could return in the second.

Netflix's black comedy historical series The Decameron put a silly twist on the 14th century class struggles of Europe, but will the show return for a second season? Developed for the small screen by Kathleen Jordan (from the classic story cycle by Giovanni Boccaccio), The Decameron concerns a band of nobles and their servants as they seek shelter in the Villa Santa as the Black Death ravages the Italian countryside. Cleverly exaggerating the bombastic nature of European history, The Decameron intentionally draws a parallel between 14th century issues and modern times with anachronistic humor that bites hard at class issues.

Catching up with Tony Hale: Fear, Forky, and Matching His Costars’ Freak in ‘The Decameron’
Image
If you’re as terminally online as I am, you see Tony Hale’s face every day.

The actor best known for “Veep” and “Arrested Development” is a household name for comedy fans, even if he enjoys a degree of anonymity in his day-to-day.

“People are just really nice,” he told IndieWire, along with an anecdote of the previous night when a restaurant hostess shared her appreciation of his work. “But then — my wife is from Alabama — I go to Alabama and no one’s watching or has watched ‘Veep’ or ‘Arrested.’ So it’s not that kind of really high fame.”

It’s the kind of fame that prompts people to shout “Buster!” at him in the street, or character-specific things like “You’ve got two hands” — the kind of fame that comes from being on two heavily-memed shows, at least one of which was all over social media...

‘The Decameron’ Doesn’t Use Its Time Wisely
Image
Modern television has provided ample evidence that time does not dictate genre. The Emmys learned this the hard way, when they tried to bypass the comedy or drama debates by using runtimes to decide category placement, only to be swarmed by even more controversy during their confounding, seemingly arbitrary appeals process. Yes, it turns out half-hour shows can be dramas and hourlong shows can skew comedic. Look no further than some of TV’s buzziest, best shows: “The White Lotus”, “Succession”, and “The Bear” (let’s not start that up again).

But while time may not determine what a series is labeled, it does often weigh heavily on a series’ success. More important than shoving a show into one box or another is recognizing that many of these shows are successful because they blur the lines. “The Bear” serves up intense kitchen scenarios that can skew toward sitcom set-ups, yet...

Who Is in The Decameron Cast? Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet and More
Image
The Decameron is taking viewers back into quarantine … but in a fun way. In this soapy dark comedy, a cast of misfits is facing a pandemic (and enough centuries have passed since that it’s definitely not too soon to joke about it).

Created by Kathleen Jordan and loosely inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection originally published in the mid-14th century, the period series follows a group of nobles and their servants who flee to a grand villa to escape the Black Death in 1348. ‘The Decameron’ Netflix Review: A Tedious Watch That Fails To Leave A Mark
Image
The Decameron, created by Kathleen Jordan, transports us back to 14th-century Italy, where a few nobles are forced to stay together in a mansion due to a pandemic. The mansion was one of the last quarantine zones left that was safe and not infected by pestilence, so the nobles had no option but to stay there and bear with each other, though, in an ideal world, they would have torn one another apart. The narrative is chaotic; it’s cluttered with characters; it’s full of drama, though I am not very sure if it is as humorous as the makers would have wanted it to be. I personally haven’t read Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection of the same name, so I came to watch this series without any sort of expectations. I believe it would have been disappointing for those few who expected it to be an...

‘The Decameron’ Ending Explained & Series Summary: Did Licisca Save Villa Santa?
Image
The Decameron, created by Kathleen Jordan, is inspired by the tales of Giovanni Boccaccio, in which 10 Florentines stuck in a mansion during the 1300s, tell each other stories when Europe was going through one of the most difficult phases in its history. So it can be said that the series is inspired by his short stories, though the makers have altered a lot of things and taken creative liberties wherever they could.

In the series, the Bubonic plague caused the deaths of millions of people. Nobody knew how to cure it, and so the recourse available was to go to a palace located in the countryside and socially distance yourself from everybody. So, a bunch of people who belonged to the royal bloodline decided to go to Signor Leonardo’s palace and save their lives. Now, everybody who was going there had their own motives and agendas, and I must...

'The Decameron' Review - Netflix's Rowdy House Party Is More Than Meets the Eye
Image
These days, the success of a pandemic-set story seems to really depend on timing. While some creators have chosen to lean into a more modern narrative linked to much more recent circumstances, others are looking much further back using the past as a vehicle to tap into contemporary fears and anxieties. Such is the case with Netflix's upcoming adaptation of The Decameron, which hails from creator Kathleen Jordan (Teenage Bounty Hunters) as well as executive producer Jenji Kohan (Orange Is the New Black).

The Decameron Review: Netflix's So-Called Raunchy Comedy Lacks The Wit & Intrigue Of Its Namesake
Image
The Decameron miniseries fails to capture the wit and language of Giovanni Boccaccio's iconic work. The plot lacks intrigue and the characters are generally unlikable, making it a slow watch. The show's humor falls flat, lacking guffaw-inducing moments and failing to establish its own unique style.

Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron is one of the most iconic Italian works of the 14th century, comprised of over 100 short stories that range in genre and inspired not only adaptations, but also influenced other authors of the time, including Chaucer and William Shakespeare. Similar to past adaptations, Netflix's miniseries is far more of a loose translation of Boccaccio's work, though unlike prior incarnations, it fails to either create its own language or match the wit of its source material.

‘The Decameron’ Review: Zosia Mamet and Tony Hale in Netflix’s Fitfully Funny Black Plague Comedy
Image
As Netflix’s The Decameron begins, nearly all of our characters are retreating. They might not put it in quite those terms, but it’s exactly what these characters are doing: flocking to the “beautiful, not-infected countryside,” as one character puts it, in hopes of waiting out the Black Plague currently tearing through the continent.

But it doesn’t matter how hard they try to get into “the holiday state of mind,” or how desperately some of them might hope to reorient their fortunes while away. It almost doesn’t even matter how insistently real life intrudes on their getaway. The Decameron is a fitfully funny, occasionally poignant testament to the truism that no matter the circumstances, people will always find a way to be people, in all our petty or horny or heroic glory.

From the moment The Decameron‘s nobles and attendants arrive at the Villa Santa, at...

Amar Chadha-Patel, Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet, Leila Farzad, Lou Gala, Jessica Plummer, Douggie McMeekin, Karan Gill, Tanya Reynolds, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson in The Decameron (2024)
Netflix is dropping a new show this summer that takes a classic old story and spins it into something fresh. “The Decameron” premieres on July 25th, and it’s blending history with modern storytelling in a really cool way.

The show is based on a famous book from the 1400s by an Italian dude named Giovanni Boccaccio. His book, also called “The Decameron,” follows a group of fancy nobles escaping from a nasty plague by telling each other stories for 10 days. This plague, called the Black Death, was sweeping through Italy and everybody was super scared. So these nobles hole up in a nice country house to avoid getting sick.

While there, they pass the time by picking a king or queen each night who gets to pick a theme for the stories. Over the next few hours, each noble has to spin a yarn that fits the theme. Boccaccio...

Is Netflix's 'The Decameron' Based on a True Story?
Image
Hold onto your hearts and holy relics, people, because history is about to get a lot more heated. With the success of summer hits like Bridgerton Season 3 and Prime Video's My Lady Jane, Netflix is treating audiences to their latest dose of period drama with this week's release of The Decameron. Created by Kathleen Jordan and produced by Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, the streamer's latest series promises all the sinful lust and offbeat humor that's helped to make the genre popular, featuring a cast of debauched characters led by Tony Hale and Sex Education's Tanya Reynolds. Yet, while the show's medieval aesthetic and old-fashioned quirks might suggest otherwise, part of what makes Jordan's series so unique is the fact that The Decameron is not, in fact, based on a true story.

7 Best Shows Like ‘Cobra Kai’ To Watch If You Love The Series
Image
Cobra Kai Season 6 is finally here and it’s even better than the last one, which no one thought was possible. The Netflix series follows the story of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), who has kind of left bullying and turned into a karate instructor. The series continues the story of the 1984 film The Karate Kid, in which Johnny lost the “All Valley Karate Tournament” to his enemy Daniel (Ralph Macchio). In the series, Johnny inspires weak kids to learn karate so that they can stand up to their bullies and fight to protect themselves. Still, everything goes wrong in a very entertaining way and many iconic characters from the Karate Kid movies appear in the series. So, if you love the teen drama, action comedy, and martial arts in Cobra Kai here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 2.

Don't Worry, Netflix's "New Bridgerton" Couldn't Actually Be More Different
Image
"The Decameron" is a medieval black comedy set in the middle of the 14th century. The upcoming show's tone, inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio's work, separates it from the popular historical romance series "Bridgerton." While both series involve romance, "The Decameron" offers raunchy humor during the Black Death, taking place more than 400 years before "Bridgerton."

While Bridgerton takes a (presumably long) hiatus between seasons 3 and 4, Netflix is releasing a new TV series that is seemingly similar to Shonda Rhimes' popular period drama but is actually very different. The historical romance show, created by Chris Van Dusen, is based on Julia Quinn's book series of the same name and follows the lives of the Bridgerton family. Falling in line with the set of eight novels, every season of Bridgerton revolves around one Bridgerton sibling and their love story, with Daphne's being told in season 1, Anthony's in season 2, and Colin's...

Bubonic Plague Sparks Wine-Soaked Sex Romp in Netflix’s ‘The Decameron’ Trailer
Image
The deadliest pandemic in history has a saucy bunch of nobles in medieval Italy entangled in a countryside sex romp in the official trailer for Netflix’s The Decameron.

“I’ve been having sinful thoughts,” Lou Gala, who plays Neifile, a God-fearing and highly sexual young guest at a countryside villa during the Black Death pandemic, says at one point in the trailer for the series. (Think Love Island, with people also infiltrating a villa for temptation, but taking place in the hills of Tuscany in 1348.)

Social rules among the nobility and their servants eventually wear thin during this soapy dramedy from creator/showrunner Kathleen Jordan and executive producer Jenji Kohan as a wine-soaked sex romp ensues. People then begin to die but more from an orgy of riches and wine that has everyone scrambling for survival.

Sony TV’s Wayne Garvie challenges European producers to better exploit European stories
Image
Wayne Garvie, Sony Pictures Television’s president of international production, has challenged European producers to better exploit Europe’s “treasure house of global IP”.

Speaking at Italy’s Avp Summit, Garvie said Europe has a huge depth of stories from Greek tragedies, Roman emperors, Norse gods, French musketeers, Spanish conquistadors to German fairy tales. “All of them have in various forms entertained the world for thousands of years, and each generation reinvents those stories.”

However, he noted US filmmakers are traditionally better at reinterpreting European stories for international audiences, and then capitalising on their success by building worlds and franchises around their series and characters.

The Decameron (1971)
The Decameron | Teaser trailer released for Netflix comedy
The Decameron (1971)
Period comedy The Decameron is coming to Netflix, and here’s the trailer for the brand new eight episode show.

It seems that period comedies are coming back into vogue. A few months ago we got Andy Riley’s fun Dark Ages romp Seize Them!, with Derry Girls star Nicola Coghlan, Aimee Lou Wood and Nick Frost.

Another Derry Girls alumnus, Saoirse Monica-Jackson, stars in The Decameron, which is coming to Netflix next month.

A prescient comedy, the show examines how people of that generation dealt with a worldwide pandemic, and the chasm between the rich and the poor.

The synopsis reads as follows:

You are cordially invited to a wine-soaked sex romp set in the Italian countryside… The Decameron is a soapy dark comedy that examines the all-too-timely theme of class struggles in the season of a pandemic. In the year 1348, the Black Death strikes hard in the city of Florence,...
