Mahershala Ali in Swan Song (2021)
Discussing Love & Sacrifice with Mahershala Ali in 'Swan Song' Promo
Mahershala Ali in Swan Song (2021)
"It's about what human relationships are... and how far someone will go for love." When the trailer for this film first debuted, I was surprised to discover another sci-fi film was dropping this year. Swan Song is about a dying man who decides to let a clone take over his life, but it's not an easy choice. The film (and this video) explores the implications that come with that choice. Apple TV has debuted this featurette for Swan Song to promote its release on the streaming service. Set in the near future, Cameron Turner is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Presented with an experimental solution to shield his wife and son from grief, he grapples with altering their fate in this sci-fi drama. The always wonderful Mahershala Ali stars as Cameron, with Naomie Harris as his wife Poppy, plus Glenn Close, Awkwafina, Adam Beach, Lee Shorten, Dax Rey, Nyasha Hatendi,...

Mahershala Ali & Naomie Harris in Sci-Fi Drama 'Swan Song' Trailer
Mahershala Ali
"So he has everything?" "Even the memories you store deep in your subconscious." Apple TV has unveiled a trailer for an intriguing upcoming film titled Swan Song, the feature directorial debut of Irish filmmaker Benjamin Cleary already acclaimed for his short films. Not to be confused with the excellent Udo Kier film also titled Swan Song released earlier this year (why do they have to have the same title!). Set in the near future, Cameron Turner is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Presented with an experimental solution to shield his wife and son from grief, he grapples with altering their fate in this exploration of love, loss, and sacrifice. It seems to involve creating a clone, sans disease, with all his memories copied over. Mahershala Ali stars as Cameron, with Naomie Harris as his wife Poppy, plus Glenn Close, Awkwafina, Adam Beach, Lee Shorten, Dax Rey, Nyasha Hatendi, and JayR Tinaco.

How Gender Non-Conforming Actors Are Changing Hollywood
Image
With 1.4 million Instagram followers, Tommy Dorfman is one of the breakout stars of Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why.” But when Dorfman, who is gender-nonconforming and goes by the pronouns “they” and “them,” was shopping around for a new agent in 2017, the process was harder than it should have been. As Dorfman recalls, one representative told them that not identifying with a single gender was “a fad,” and the agency couldn’t sign them.

“The agent was like, ‘Look, maybe you’ll be the Laverne Cox of this show and pop, but what I’m looking at now is not financially a good investment for us,’” Dorfman says in a Zoom interview with Variety.

Dorfman, 27, remembers wearing a heeled boot and a cropped polo shirt to the meeting (relatively tame by Hollywood standards), which wasn’t even with “a big agency.” The look strayed a little too left of center for the agent.

TV Review: ‘Another Life’
Netflix’s new series “Another Life” brings Katee Sackhoff back into space, a decade after the conclusion of “Battlestar Galactica,” the beloved series on which she starred. But her new series looks more like the rest of the fare on the SyFy network — it’s inelegantly made and operates less in the realm of ideas than in pure scares. It’s not ineffective, but little in “Another Life” connects to do much more than the purely visceral.

Which is too bad, not least because the show starts from a point that suggests it has big things on its mind. The arrival (to borrow the title of the 2016 film the plot seems to ape a bit) of a UFO hovering above Earth prompts Sackhoff, an astronaut, to join a mission seeking its origin and its motives. She’s faced first with a mutinous blowhard among her crew and then by a...
