Is Gen X Dying Before Our Eyes?
Image
As a kid, you didn’t need to have smoked marijuana or even know what it was (I plead ignorance on both counts — really Mom!) to vibe with a flustered Theo Huxtable after his suddenly unsmiling parents found a joint in his textbook on a 1985 episode of The Cosby Show.

Such a tableau would confound today’s generation of young well-meaning miscreants, in part because they smelled pot smoke three times already just walking to the store and also, what’s a textbook?

But Theo meant everything to a whole generation of kids who saw in him the idea, as Questlove eloquently put it after Malcom-Jamal Warner’s death on Monday, of “what does it mean to be an adult without depending on your parents?”

Warner’s passing at 54 in a drowning accident hit hard. And not just his passing. For anyone considered a part of Gen X — roughly,...

2025 Emmys: Best Surprises and Worst Snubs of the Year
Image
With the 2025 Emmy Awards announcing their nominees this morning, we’ve finally had time to catch our breath and read over the nominees. In the process, we found several snubs that are not only surprising but will age terribly in the years ahead. Check out our list and let us know if any big ones are missing.

2025 Emmy Snubs and Surprises Snub: An Only Murders Lead Bloodbath

The duo of Martin Short and Steve Martin gained new life with the arrival of Selena Gomez. The trio has become one of the great comedic teams in recent memory, allowing Gomez to shine by offering a laconic humor compared to the massive performances from Short and Martin. However, with only Short grabbing a nomination for the 2025 Emmys, we’re a little baffled. It’s possible both could have made the list in a year of six nominees, but unfortunately, we can never know if that is true.

Emmy Nominations 2025: Snubs and Surprises
Image
When we talk about snubs and surprises with this year’s Emmy nominations, we’re at times stretching each term. Some of the “snubs” mentioned below involve shows or performances that weren’t necessarily the best, but fit the pattern of the kinds of things that usually get nominated, while others were great but were expected to be ignored. And some of the surprises are more about matters of degree, rather than their presence at all. Let’s get to it.

Surprise: The Studio dominates

It was a great morning...

If Virgin River Wasn’t Emotional Enough, Netflix Dropped Its Steamier Twin
Image
Just when fans thought Virgin River delivered peak emotional comfort, Netflix quietly added Sullivan’s Crossing, its steamier Canadian twin, to its roster, and so far, the show has been wreaking havoc on the streaming platform.

Also based on Robyn Carr’s novels of the same name, the show features the same cozy small-town vibe with a neurosurgeon lead, small-town scandals, and bigger romantic sparks. While we await the next season of VR, its twin is the perfect hug-your-pillow show with just a bit more heat.

Sullivan’s Crossing is a Lot Similar to Virgin River Chad Michael Murray and Morgan Kohan in a still from Sullivan’s Crossing | Credits: Netflix

Although Sullivan’s Crossing and Virgin River are not exactly carbon copies, they do share several similar traits. While VR is all about slow-burn warmth and family‑first drama, Sullivan’s Crossing is more emotionally charged, blending heartfelt moments with sensual undertones.

The show...

50 Years Later, Fascist Satire ‘A Boy and His Dog’ Goes Great with Deep Panic — and Summer Malaise
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark honors fringe cinema in the streaming age with midnight movies from any moment in film history.

First, the Bait: a weird genre pick and why we’re exploring its specific niche right now. Then, the Bite: a spoiler-filled answer to the all-important question, “Is this old cult classic actually worth recommending?”

The Bait: No Food? No Females? No Shit.

There’s a feminist interpretation of “A Boy and His Dog” lurking somewhere inside this divisive black comedy from 1975. But I might be just a little too depressed to find it.

No worries! We can still flop on the couch, stream it for free, and let the maybe-misunderstood, anti-fascist cult classic — about a brutish scavenger named Vic (Don Johnson) and his psychic dog named Blood (voiced by Tim McIntire) — smother us both like a hug in a heatwave.

This summer in the U.

Never Blink Movie Ending Explained And Recap: What Does Frank’s Return Mean?
Image
The String Theory speaks about universes existing in infinite numbers. The notion of parallel reality is scientifically backed; however, figuring out the access to the realities is still a fictional territory. Our reality is the only one that we know of—and it makes us wonder what lies beyond the boundaries of our known reality. The portals to the other worlds are believed to be many in fiction—sometimes they are mirrors, crystal balls, doors, or even complex machines. However, exploring human anatomy to enter an alternate reality is a fairly novel concept, especially when it happens through a biological function such as blinking—scientifically known as nictitating. Never Blink is an ambitious attempt at conceptual horror with a sprinkle of science fiction that dramatizes the hardwired condition of blinking into something more. In the film, blinking is equivalent to getting receptive to multidimensional images and perhaps a reality too,...

Paul Telfer Reflects on Xander’s Heartbreaking Storyline and Days of Our Lives Emmy Love
Image
It’s been an incredible year for Days of Our Lives’ Xander Kiriakis, so far. After finding out that he was Victor’s heir, not Alex, he was blindsided by his brother Philip, who also laid claim to the fortune. Unfortunately, he did so using a forged letter from their dad, and they’re now forced to keep the status quo or they’ll lose all the major business advancements (and the money) that they’ve made. With all of that drama going on, it’s no wonder that Paul Telfer was nominated for a Daytime Emmy, and Xander’s portrayer had some insightful thoughts about that.

He Was Very Shocked

Along with a photo of himself that had the text overlaid, “Days Of Our Lives, Emmy Award Nominee, Paul Telfer, Outstanding Lead Performance In A Daytime Drama Series: Actor,” Telfer wrote on Instagram, “What an absolutely lovely surprise ☺️.” He...

‘Too Much’s Meg Stalter On “Capturing The Essence” Of Lena Dunham’s Love Story & Being “Off-Putting” To British People
Image
For Megan Stalter‘s first leading TV role, she hopped the pond to London for a modern twist on classic British romantic-comedies.

Speaking to Deadline about Lena Dunham and husband Luis Felber’s Too Much, Season 1 of which is now available to stream on Netflix, the actress said she felt “none of that pressure” to portray them any specific way.

“I loved how it was kind of capturing the essence of them and not just a direct documentary about them,” explained Stalter. “They never wanted us to do impressions of them, it was more so like, ‘We’re married and this is kind of this thing we’re doing together, but it’s your characters, and you take it as your own.’ And not all of the stuff happened, but it’s just more the energy of them together.”

Too Much stars Stalter as Jessica, a New Yorker who moves...

Happy(?) July 4th Weekend! Rail Against ‘Society’ with Brian Yuzna’s Big Beautiful Body Horror

The Bait: Stars, Stripes, and… Shunting?

There’s a smorgasbord of Fourth of July thrillers and horror movies worth checking out in these Trying Times. Brian De Palma’s “Blow Out” gets a strong reaction from anyone living in fear of the alleged police state, and you can’t celebrate the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” without mentioning it as one of pop culture’s great indictments on local government.

Corruption is still the name of the game in this week’s After Dark — Brian Yuzna’s eye-bursting, jaw-dropping,...

Virgin River Season 7: Release Window, Production, Cast & All We Know About Netflix’s Small-Town Saga So Far
Image
Everything We Know About Netflix’s Virgin River Season 7 So Far(Photo Credit –Netflix)

Virgin River is not done with your emotions. Netflix’s fan-favorite small-town saga is officially rolling into its seventh season, and while the pace of life in the fictional northern town might be slow, the drama behind the scenes? Anything but. This time, old ties are being tested. And fresh faces are moving in, some with secrets, others with second chances. The season looks ready to stir the pot in a big way.

Virgin River Season 7: Production Timeline

Filming for Season 7 kicked off back on March 12, 2025, and the cameras were expected to stop rolling by June 26. With 10 episodes lined up, the show’s return date is still a mystery. Netflix hasn’t stamped a launch window yet, but given the radio silence on 2025 content lists, early 2026 (maybe around Valentine’s Day) feels more realistic than a late-2025 release.

David Koepp on Why It Took Him Almost 30 Years to Return to the ‘Jurassic Park’ Franchise He Helped Create
Image
It’s been 28 years since David Koepp wrote a screenplay about dinosaurs. As you probably know, Koepp was the screenwriter (along with author Michael Crichton) for Steven Spielberg’s original hit “Jurassic Park.” He then wrote the script for Spielberg’s 1997 sequel, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.”

And then, well, he was out of ideas when it came to dinosaurs. When Joe Johnston’s “Jurassic Park III” came around, it was time to let someone else take a shot at it. Koepp has stayed peripherally involved in the “Jurassic World” movies since, offering some notes here and there when asked, but as Koepp told IndieWire, there was nothing of real consequence.

This all changes with “Jurassic World: Rebirth.” It was Spielberg himself who called Koepp and urged him to return to the cinematic world he helped create over 30 years ago. And what Koepp found appealing was that it seemed like...

Scarlett Johansson Has a Tense Family Reunion in Trailer for ‘Slow Horses’ Star’s Directorial Debut
Image
Scarlett Johansson is gearing up to make her dino debut in Jurassic World Rebirth next week, but another project from the former Marvel star just got an exciting new look. Johansson stars alongside Sienna Miller in My Mother’s Wedding, which was formerly titled North Star. The film follows three sisters who return home for the third wedding of their twice-widowed mother, but the trio are forced to dive into parts of their past they’d rather not revisit. Vertical Entertainment has released the first official trailer for My Mother’s Wedding, which has been in distribution limbo since premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival nearly two years ago. However, Vertical Entertainment has put these rights issues to bed and set the film for release on August 8.

John Micklethwait and Kristin Scott Thomas wrote the script for My Mother’s Wedding, and Thomas also stepped behind the camera to direct the film.

How Two Weddings Altered the Course of Modern Love in Celine Song’s ‘Materialists’
Image
After cutting Celine Song’s first two films, “Past Lives” and “Materialists,” editor Keith Fraase has a clearer understanding of the director’s view on love and relationships, what our value is as people, and the different paths we can take in our lives. “All of these ideas are stemming from Celine’s brilliant mind, so, of course, her films are in conversation with each other,” Fraase told IndieWire.

“The thing that was immediately most striking to me about ‘Materialists’ was the deep dive into the notion of capitalism and consumerism infecting the dating scene,” he continued. “Breaking each other down into these component parts of height and income and attractiveness and style simplifies each other’s humanity so much. We’re devaluing ourselves and our potential partners. It’s obviously something that we live with day to day, and you see all around you. But I think there was...

Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes Talk Danny Boyle’s Genius at ’28 Years Later’ World Premiere: “It’s Horror, but I Was Struck by How Moved I Was”
Image
London’s Leicester Square was a no-go zone Wednesday night as the cast and crew of Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel 28 Years Later descended on the Odeon Luxe theater.

Biohazard warnings surrounded fans and guests at the central London cinema. Among the talent talking to press on the blood-stained carpet was the film’s stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and young newcomer Alfie Williams, as well as director Boyle and writer Alex Garland.

It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected.

A small community living off the coast of Northumbria, Britain, is connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. Tough-guy Jamie (Taylor-Johnson) has raised his 12-year-old son, Spike (Williams) with the mettle to send an arrow through an infected’s neck if needs be.

10 Years Ago, ‘Closet Monster’ Reminded Us Why We Still Need Coming-Out Movies
Image
Dysfunctional parents, a pining girlfriend, falling for a straight guy — if you’ve seen one gay coming-out movie, you’ve seen them all. In fact, the genre has become so overcrowded that it’s spilled out from indie film festivals to streaming and even the multiplex via mainstream efforts such as “Love, Simon,” “Heartstopper,” and “Red, White & Royal Blue.”

Watching these same beats play out time and again, it’s tempting to dismiss coming-out movies as trite or unnecessary these days, at least within a Western context. But of course, every generation deserves its own version of this story. The problem is when said story is derivative of what’s come before.

Cookie-cutter takes on this vital step in the lives of so many no longer move the dial forward like they used to. To be queer is by definition a radical act, yet subversive, disruptive spins on that narrative remain few and far between.

‘F1’ Review: Brad Pitt Speeds His Way Through a Solid Summer Blockbuster That Never Reaches Top Gear
Image
In a clever flex of corporate synergy, Apple promoted its first summer blockbuster with the release of a haptic trailer that imitates the purr of an F1 engine in the palms of your hands. The clip delivers such well-calibrated vibrations that watching it on an iPhone makes it seem like you’re microdosing 4Dx right on the subway, or the toilet, or wherever it is you choose to enjoy the film industry’s latest breakthrough in vertical integration.

But the real potency of this ad, and the real potential of the technology that it represents, can only be experienced by viewing the promo on mute — the haptic feedback is so nuanced and expressive that you can literally feel the basic plot and emotions of Joseph Kosinski’s “F1” through your fingertips. It’s the closest thing to “pure cinema” I’ve ever enjoyed on a device that I primarily use...

Why The Walking Dead: World Beyond Only Lasted Two Seasons
Image
Against the face of the obvious jokes about its name and nature, the "Walking Dead" franchise has walked, ran, and occasionally shambled along since its titular first show premiered in 2010. The horror-tinted post-apocalyptic drama has spawned so many spin-offs that /Film has a guide for the correct order to watch the "Walking Dead" shows, and there are absolutely no signs of the property stopping any time soon.

Out of the three multi-season "The Walking Dead" shows that have ended, the original enjoyed a very solid 11-season run and the first spin-off, "Fear the Walking Dead," tapped out after season 8. However, the second spin-off, "The Walking Dead: World Beyond," lasted only two seasons. The show -- which, unlike most "The Walking Dead" projects, focused on teenage characters -- ran from 2020 to 2021. While its short tenure might seem to indicate that it was a failed YA-themed experiment, "World Beyond" actually ended on its own terms.

‘I feel so lucky to be part of it’: Tim Bagley on finding love, laughter, and belonging in ‘Somebody Somewhere’
Image
When Tim Bagley joined the cast of HBO’s critically acclaimed Somebody Somewhere, he stepped into a world that, for many viewers, felt like home. As Brad, Bagley delivered one of television’s most tender portrayals of late-in-life love, spirituality, and self-discovery — themes rarely explored in LGBTQ narratives on screen. With equal parts humor and heartbreak, Brad’s story resonated deeply with Bagley, whose own life experiences have profoundly influenced his performance.

In a recent interview with Gold Derby, Bagley reflected on joining the cast in its sophomore season, how he approached Brad’s emotional complexities, and why Somebody Somewhere is such a rare gem in today’s television landscape.

"I feel really lucky because I was not in the first season," Bagley said. "I absolutely loved that first season – it really resonated with me and my experience. I loved the style of it, the humor, and how it felt like a slice of life.

Rupert Everett Decries “Cinematic Wokery” In “Puritanical” Climate, Says He Hate-Watches ‘Hacks’ – Taormina
Image
British actor Rupert Everett, who is on the jury at the Taormina Film Festival, spoke candidly — at some points seriously and others more drolly — this afternoon on a number of topics ranging from his thoughts on the industry today to the threat of AI and how his tastes in consuming content run to “things I don’t really like to watch.”

Charming the assembled film students and accredited attendees, Everett kicked off the conversation in Italian, talking about his experience with Francesco Rosi on 1987’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold and the 2019 mini The Name of the Rose, which shot at Cinecittà.

Then, asked about the state of the industry, Everett pivoted more so to television than cinema and said: “I think for me it’s not having a very good moment because I preferred the world of entertainment when it was a little bit less puritanical. I feel that...

Why ‘Somebody Somewhere’ deserves its first Emmy nomination before it’s too late
Image
After three critically acclaimed seasons, HBO’s dramedy Somebody Somewhere has quietly wrapped its final chapter — yet surprisingly, it has done so without a single Emmy nomination (for now). As the series concludes, now is the moment to celebrate the storytelling and performances it has delivered throughout its run.

Every season of Somebody Somewhere boasts a 100 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a testament to the show’s finely tuned balance of humor, heart, and honest storytelling. Created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and starring Bridget Everett, who is also an executive producer and co-writer, the series has built a devoted following and earned accolades from critics and audiences alike. Its Peabody Award win underscores the show's meaningful exploration of identity, community, and emotional resilience.

Why ‘Somebody Somewhere’ Star Bridget Everett Insisted Miley Cyrus’ ‘The Climb’ Be Sam’s Defining Anthem: It’s the Song ‘That Matters Most’
Image
In Season 1 of HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” the spotlight had to find Sam (Bridget Everett), a wayward 40-something, looking for direction in her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas.

In the slice-of-life dramedy’s very first episode, Sam is reluctantly pulled on stage by her best friend Joel (Jeff Hiller) to perform karaoke and ends up astonishing the crowd as she belts Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush’s “Don’t Give Up.” She doesn’t like the vulnerability, but there’s no denying music is her form of expression.

So, it’s a full-circle moment in the series finale when Sam seizes the microphone to perform for her chosen family (with Joel again on the piano). “For me, she has grown about a thousand miles from where she was in Season 1,” Everett tells Variety. “For a viewer, it probably just seems minute, but our whole mission for Sam was to have her keep pushing herself.

Michael Imperioli, Josh Brolin, Matt Dillon, Director Ebs Burnough & More Go ‘On The Road’ With Jack Kerouac In Tribeca Documentary
Image
Exclusive: Author Jack Kerouac set an ambitious task for himself when he pondered writing On the Road, his 1957 masterpiece that still reverberates in the American imagination.

“My purpose is to conquer knowledge of the U.S.A.,” he wrote, “to know it as I know the palm of my hand.”

Those words, immodest, carried away with possibility and essentially romantic, are articulated in the new documentary Kerouac’s Road: The Beat of a Nation, which makes its premiere this evening at Tribeca Festival in New York. Actor Michael Imperioli voices Kerouac’s writings in the film directed by Ebs Burnough and produced by Burnough, Eliza Hindmarch, and John Battsek. Watch an excerpt from Kerouac’s Road in the exclusive clip above.

The documentary interweaves “stories of modern-day travelers with insights from those influenced by or connected to the legendary author,” Tribeca’s Jarod Neece writes in the festival program.

With Love, Doris!, from director-producer C.J. Wallis, producer Jim Dunlap and producer Mallory Kennedy, is built around never-before-heard audio tapes of Day responding to letters from fans. Day dictated her responses over the phone to her longtime assistant, Judy Ruby; Ruby then transcribed the tapes and sent them back to the star for revision and signature before the letters were mailed to fans. ‘We could do this show forever’: ‘Somebody Somewhere’ creators on final season, heart, and the humor of Bridget Everett
Image
"We could do this show forever. We love it so much."

Those are the shared sentiments of Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, the creators of HBO's critically acclaimed series Somebody Somewhere, who recently sat down with Gold Derby to reflect on the show's exploration of love, chosen family, and Midwest quirks — as well as its abrupt conclusion after three beloved seasons. Created for and starring Bridget Everett, the series earned a Peabody Award and multiple critical accolades for its tender yet hilarious portrayal of life in Manhattan, Kan.

While HBO did not pick up the series for a fourth season, the creators are satisfied with how things ended. "Yes, we're sad that it's over, but we're happy that it gets to be out there forever," says Bos. "Especially now ... the world feels a little bit weirder, so it's nice to have a comforting show out in the world."

Thureen elaborates,...

All is fair in love and war, but what if you’re at war with the one you love? First time director Josalynn Smith’s debut “Ride or Die” challenges the idealization of a long-festering crush with a queer thriller twist. Jamie Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions produces the feature, which will premiere at Tribeca in the U.S. Narrative Competition.

“Ride or Die” centers on Paula (Briana Middleton), who is unexpectedly reunited with her not-quite-ex Sloane (Stella Everett). Together, they decide to drive across the country to start a new life…but little do they know there is a darkness on the horizon. The below clip hints at some of the turmoil the duo will endure.

The synopsis reads: “When Paula (Middleton), a young Midwesterner who dreams of a fresh start in California, runs into Sloane (Everett), her secret high school crush, who has her demons, the chemistry is electric.

‘Severance’ Star Olafur Darri Olafsson Says Iceland’s Production Services Past Is Supercharging An Original Development Boom
Image
Exclusive: Iceland’s production services past has driven a creative development flurry, according to key local industry figures such as Severance star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.

Primarily known in entertainment for housing big-budget U.S. productions such as HBO’s True Detective: Night Country and Christopher Nolan sci-fi Interstellar, Iceland has emerged out of the shadows of its past as a car commercials location to become a significant player in European TV co-productions. At the same time, its domestic sector has similarly grown with local networks and streamers buying and the likes of Netflix and CBS Studios investing.

Ólafsson, the Icelandic-American actor and producer who starred in Baltasar Kormákur’s series Trapped and Apple TV+ drama Severance, said overseas productions and the country’s favorable tax break have played a major role in the situation. He has just filmed Series Mania competition contender Reykjavik Fusion, a crime-meets-cookery drama series, for his production house ACT4,...

All the Box Office Records ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Broke on a Historic Memorial Day Weekend
Image
Sometimes you hear the hyperbole from box office pundits that this is the biggest weekend in seemingly ever, and the numbers don’t necessarily mean much. Factor in inflation and anything will look a little less impressive. And everyone is trying to spin anyway. But with the combined totals of “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” this really was the Best Memorial Day weekend at the box office ever, and that’s really saying something for the overall health of the box office.

It was strong enough that each of the three major theater chains in North America, AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, all put out glowing statements of record-breaking attendance and concession sales. Cinema United president and CEO Michael O’Leary also sang the industry’s collective praises, saying, “It’s clear that movie theaters are cultural and economic hubs in cities and towns of all sizes, uniting communities across the country.

Jacob Elordi Had to Get Raw for His Most Profound Work Yet in ‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North’
Image
Jacob Elordi’s latest project is a return to TV with Justin Kurzel’s limited series “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” which premiered on Prime Video last month. Following its premiere in Berlin in February, reviews raved about Elordi’s performance as 1940s war doctor Dorrigo Evans, following the Aussie story adapted from Richard Flanagan’s novel of the same name.

For his first television role following “Euphoria,” Elordi was particularly drawn in by director Kurzel, who sent him an email asking if he had interest in the project, and in turn, led him toward his most profound performance to date. Upon signing onto the series, he had 12 months to sit with the material and prepare before filming began. “I had about a year to myself to marinate in all of the period information and in the book. I had a long time, quite boringly, to just sit and think about it,...

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Review: Franchise Growing Pains Can’t Hold Back Matt Palmer’s Gnarly Winner
Image
Can an even meaner “Carrie” actually end well for the prom queen? In Netflix’s new “Fear Street” adaptation, Matt Palmer argues yes and no with a whip-smart teen horror movie co-written by the director and Donald McLeary. An even gorier “Heathers” crowned in the pitch-black comedy era of “Bottoms,” “Fear Street: Prom Queen” is anchored in the same vicious and girly roots as the original film trilogy from 2021 — albeit missing some of the scope and style inherent to Leigh Janiak’s three-part slasher epic. Still, Palmer and McLeary’s take is giddy and gruesome, a clever next chapter with a fresh killer whose bloody raincoat isn’t the only detail to scream “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

References don’t make a good movie any more than they make a good movie review, but “Fear Street: Prom Queen” successfully uses genre homage to carbonate R.L. Stine’s...

Tony Gilroy on Giving ‘Andor’ a ‘Hopeful’ End, Bringing Back K-2So, and Episode 10’s Revealing Backstory
Image
On Tuesday, Disney+ dropped the last three episodes of “Andor,” wrapping up the series and directly setting up “Rogue One.” It’s not typical that a television show needs to pass its baton to a film made almost a decade earlier, and “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy did not want to approach the show’s final episode in a typical way, either.

While on this week’s episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Gilroy talked about fighting against the need to incorporate one final big decision or turning point in wrapping up the series heading into “Rogue One.”

“Episode 12 is really its own thing where we didn’t put a lot of pressure to jack anything up,” said Gilroy on the podcast. “This is kind of a ‘deliver the pizza’ episode, and the pizza is emotional, and everybody settled into it, and we took the pressure off ourselves.”

Gilroy specifically wanted...

Virgin River guest star teases potential return: 'We running this back?'
Image
We might be heading back to the past in Virgin River season 7, according to the latest post from season 6 guest star Callum Kerr. In the post, the actor seemed to hint that he could be coming back to the series for another guest appearance, but his tease also has us wondering if Netflix has finally made a decision about that long in-development prequel series.

Earlier this week, Kerr posted a photo of himself standing in front of a black background with Virgin River and Netflix written on it multiple times. He's all smiles, which seems to mirror the sentiment of his caption: "We running this back?" To further solidify the fact that he's teasing fans about his potential return, Kerr used the smirking emoji before tagging both the show and the streamer.

While some might take this post as confirmation that Kerr will reprise his role as the young version...

‘What No One Tells You’: Justin Simien Explains Why Getting Ahead Means Moving Past Failure
Image
When you’re just starting out, messing up can feel like the end of the world. It can seem like you’re disappointing your boss or co-workers, maybe even your friends and family, and worst of all, the version of yourself that was supposed to do everything right. But here’s the honest truth: You’re never going to get everything right.

Speaking to IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking for our new video series, “What No One Tells You,” filmmaker Justin Simien echoed this sentiment. In sharing his own journey to get his debut feature “Dear White People” to the big screen, Simien shared that it took a lot of failing and moving forward before he was actually able to make it happen.

Norm Macdonald’s ‘Dirty Work’ Gets Even Dirtier Almost 30 Years After Its Release
Image
In 1998, “Saturday Night Live” colleagues Norm Macdonald, Frank Sebastiano, and Fred Wolf teamed up to write “Dirty Work,” a vehicle for Macdonald in which he played a prankster who put his talents to professional use by opening up a revenge-for-hire business. The comedy, directed by comedian Bob Saget, quickly came and went from theaters but found its audience on home video, where it became a beloved cult classic with famous fans like Kevin Hart, who declared it one of his favorite movies of all time on his “Comedy Gold Minds” podcast.

Yet for the filmmakers, “Dirty Work” always felt like a compromise, because commercial considerations dictated that it be released with a PG-13 rating even though it was written as an R movie. “When we wrote the movie, they told us not to worry about the rating,” Sebastiano told IndieWire. “If we had been a little more experienced, maybe we...

‘Somebody Somewhere’s’ Jeff Hiller on Joel’s journey, connecting with fans, and improv that made the cut
Image
Jeff Hiller is perfectly satisfied with where his character, Joel, landed at the conclusion of HBO's comedy series Somebody Somewhere. “He had gotten some of the things on his vision board, and I also loved that he didn’t get everything. I think that’s more realistic,” he tells Gold Derby. Hiller particularly appreciated that the series ended highlighting the friendship that had been built between Sam (Bridget Everett) and Joel over the past three seasons. “It’s reaffirming that that is the central love story of this show,” he shares.

When Hiller first read the role of Joel at the start of Somebody Somewhere, what struck him most was that the character was an openly gay Christian — and that his faith wasn’t portrayed as a source of trauma or horror. “The church didn’t represent this terror, and I’m not saying that there aren’t some bad churches out there,...

‘The Legend of Ochi’ Is a Feat of Puppetry — Its VFX Is Still Essential
Image
We all kind of think we know what VFX looks like — or at least what bad VFX looks like. We can often feel when computer-generated imagery clashes with the visual language of a film’s world and is too plastic-y or textureless, when that world is all of a sudden too dark or crumbling into an indistinct mass of large-scale destruction porn. Especially with greater attention now on the punishing crunches and production sprints imposed on visual effects artists and the advent of soulless AI slop, there’s been a reaction against VFX as a useful tool, a desire to do everything practically — or at least a desire to say that everything is being done practically.

“The Legend of Ochi” got caught up in this “VFX is for Marvel movies (derogatory)” discourse when the first trailer for the A24 film dropped. So many online comments accused the film of being...

‘Until Dawn’ Team on Secret Easter Eggs, Potential Sequels and How the Movie and Video Games Could Merge
Image
“Until Dawn” may not have the cultural ubiquity of “Minecraft,” but the horror survival video game has a cult fanbase. Director David F. Sandberg and co-screenwriter Gary Dauberman are not only devotees of the game but a logical team to tackle the adaptation. Sandberg has helmed the horror favorite “Lights Out” and the well-received “Annabelle: Creation,” which was also scripted by Dauberman, while Dauberman is no stranger to adapting beloved horror properties, having co-written both “It” films.

Playing in the sandbox of the beloved game, “Until Dawn” is a new story in the larger universe — not a remake or reboot of the story. Ahead of its release, Sandberg and Dauberman broke down the film’s place in the franchise, some of its easter eggs and potential sequels.

How did you figure out how you wanted to adapt “Until Dawn” into a film?

Dauberman: It was a discussion with Blair Butler,...

‘It changed my life’: Bridget Everett reflects on the emotional end of ‘Somebody Somewhere’
Image
It’s the end of an era for Bridget Everett. Somebody Somewhere — the HBO comedy series she starred in, executive produced, and cowrote for three seasons — aired its final episode on Dec. 8, 2024.

"It changed my life," Everett tells Gold Derby (watch the video interview above). "It's the best thing that's ever happened to me. I don't have kids so I can say that. Getting to be on HBO with a show crafted for me, around me, partially by me — it just feels like something that you can't even dream of."

Last August, HBO confirmed that the critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning series would not return for a fourth season.

Everett reveals that the cast and crew of Somebody Somewhere didn’t know the series was ending when they wrapped Season 3, but she feels at peace with how it concluded. “We wrote it not as a series finale, but as a season finale,...
