It began with a picture — one that, when examined closer, opened up a twisted and heartbreaking 30-year mystery.
The upcoming true-crime documentary Girl in the Picture dives into the story of Sharon Marshall, as she goes from being an ambitious teenager with a scholarship to Georgia Tech to a woman with a 2-year-old son, forced by her abusive husband to work as a stripper. Her eventual tragic murder leads to an investigation of her true identity and the federal fugitive who happened to be at the center of it all. Investigative journalist Matt Birkbeck, who first wrote about this saga in his bestselling novels A Beautiful Child and Finding Sharon, is the film’s executive producer.

"This is more than just a crime story – who is this girl?" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for another true crime documentary, this one titled Girl in the Picture. Not to be confused with the other two feature films also with the same title: The Girl in the Picture from 1957, and The Girl in the Picture from 1985. This one is based on the true story of a woman who was missing for 30 years and didn't even know her real name. A young mother's mysterious death and her son's subsequent kidnapping blow open a decades-long mystery about the woman's true identity, and the murderous federal fugitive at the center of it all. It's based on an investigation by journalist Matt Birkbeck, who also appears in this doc talking about everything they figured out. This is such an over-the-top trailer, with all the jump cuts to the score and recreation footage added in.

“The biggest motivation behind the launch of this division was simple – creative control. It’s incredibly refreshing as a producer to find talent you enjoy working with or a story that deeply fascinates you and immediately be able to give yourself the green light.
