Why ‘Crush’ Filmmakers Made a Queer Rom-Com That’s Not About Coming Out
Kirsten King
For writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, “Crush” crucially moves past the coming out stage of queer life and into the part where those who have come out can be themselves.

The co-writers, who both identify as queer, started working on the project after meeting at BuzzFeed in 2018 and starting a queer writers group.

“We just felt there was a real gap in the culture for queer rom-coms that aren’t about coming out,” King told TheWrap. “I feel like life after the coming out moment is when stuff gets really good for queer people. Absolutely coming out stories have a place in queer cinema and are necessary and are helpful and are a part of what it means to be a queer person, but this film is so centered on the joy for us.”

The Hulu original film follows high school junior Paige Evans (Rowan Blanchard), who joins the...

Rowan Blanchard, Auli'i Cravalho, and Isabella Ferreira in Crush (2022)
‘Crush’ Star Rowan Blanchard Says She Joined Hulu Rom-Com Because ‘That’s Such a Missing Genre’
Rowan Blanchard, Auli'i Cravalho, and Isabella Ferreira in Crush (2022)
High school is rough, but it’s even harder when you’re trying to figure out if you have real feelings for your childhood crush — or her sister. But it does make for good comedy in Hulu’s new rom-com “Crush,” and that’s exactly what drew star Rowan Blanchard to it.

The movie follows Paige (Blanchard) as she tries to figure out what the happiest moment in her life up to this point has been, so she can immortalize it for her college art school application. She thinks maybe it’s her crush on Gabriella Campos (Isabella Ferreira), and the moment she fell for her in grade school. Then again, Paige is also slowly starting to fall for Gabby’s sister, Aj (Auli’i Cravalho), a journey which is providing inspiration in itself.

Directed by Sammi Cohen and written by Casey Rackham and Kirsten King, “Crush” also boasts a cast that includes Megan Mullally,...

‘Crush’ Star Auli’i Cravalho Says It Was Vital That Queer Writers Make a Queer Rom-Com (Video)
Rowan Blanchard, Auli'i Cravalho, and Isabella Ferreira in Crush (2022)
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Hulu’s new movie “Crush”

Trying to figure out if you have real feelings for your childhood crush or her sister, can be hard. But such is the situation in Hulu’s new rom-com “Crush.” And for Auli’Cravalho, who stars as half — or rather, one third — of that love story, having queer writers was a huge factor in telling that story authentically.

“Having queer writers, and a director, just allowed us to have this film that was so vibrant and funny,” Cravalho told TheWrap. “Like, to be able to also tease queerness you know? It’s funny, and it’s okay! Because we’re teasing ourselves, you know what I mean?”

Directed by Sammi Cohen, and written by Casey Rackham and Kirsten King, “Crush” follows Paige (Rowan Blanchard) as she tries to figure out what the happiest moment in her life up to this point has been,...

‘Crush’ Review: Everyone’s a Little Bit Queer in Hulu’s Cutesy Gen-z Rom-Com
Image
Movie cliches don’t have to be problematic. For instance, the “cool” mom who tries a little too hard (forever emblematized by Amy Poehler in “Mean Girls”) — she can stay. In “Crush,” Sammi Cohen’s snappy teen comedy about first love, Megan Mullally offers a refreshing take on that exact trope, imagining her as a lustful Milf who’s a little too sex positive. And it’s not the only familiar gag refreshed into something new in this cute Gen-z rom-com.

The film stars Rowan Blanchard as an aspiring high school artist who’s been nursing the same crush since fifth grade. The twist — if it even can be called that anymore — is that she’s queer and her crush is another girl. But unlike the try-hard mom, “Crush” definitively lays to rest any of those pesky tropes we’re so used to seeing in queer fare: There’s no tired coming out drama,...

‘Crush’ Review: Hulu’s Teen-Centric Queer Rom-Com Plays It Too Safe
Image
Curiously unadventurous for a sex-positive teen romantic comedy, Sammi Cohen’s “Crush” centers its premise on an age-old recipe: an emotionally bemused heroine desperately pursues her supposed soul mate, when her ultimate the one has been right under her nose all along.

Still, predictability isn’t the real deficit of this well-meaning and progressive Hulu original that aims to land somewhere in the vicinity of “Some Kind of Wonderful” and “American Pie.” After all, some of the most timeless and irresistible romances stem from tales we’ve all heard a million times before. What’s jarring in “Crush” is the absence of some requisite dose of youthful mischief, a sense of stakes and perhaps even a lightly scandalous touch, integral to the spirit of many of the genre staples Cohen and co-writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham attempt to revive on their own terms.

Still, the world “Crush” conjures up is surprisingly timid,...

From ‘Moana’ to Queer Teen Rom-Com ‘Crush,’ Auli’i Cravalho Just Wants to ‘Play Smart Women’
Image
Early success can be a blessing and a curse. Most child actors hoping to transition to more mature roles face an uphill battle, and it can be hard to coax audiences out of the cognitive dissonance of seeing established baby-faced performers as fully fledged adults.

Fortunately, “Moana” star Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the titular role in the mega-hit Disney musical, doesn’t have that problem — though she may need a little help reminding people who she is. She’s not worried, though. Still, fans of the fearless Hawaiian princess may be surprised by her latest big on-camera role: a scrappy tomboy who rides a skateboard in Hulu’s new queer rom-com “Crush.”

Led by an all LGBTQ creative team that consists of writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham and director Sammi Cohen, “Crush” is a charming queer rom-com for the Disney Channel generation. The movie stars “Girl Meets World” lead Rowan Blanchard as Paige,...

Rowan Blanchard in Hulu's High School RomCom Movie 'Crush' Trailer
John Malkovich, Frank Grillo, Lilly Krug, and Cameron Monaghan in Shattered (2022)
"Don't be afraid to draw something a little more vulnerable." Hulu has debuted the trailer for a high school romantic comedy titled Crush, marking the feature directorial debut of comedy filmmaker Sammi Cohen. This is landing on Hulu at the end of April. An aspiring young artist joins her high school track team and later discovers what real love feels like when she finds herself falling for an unexpected teammate. Another cute LGBTQ comedy for the streaming era that seems to be rehashing the same teen romance we've seen before so many other times. The first feature film from former Hollywood Darlings director Sammi Cohen, from a script written by Kirsten King and Casey Rackham. Crush features a comedic cast including Rowan Blanchard, Auli’i Cravalho, Isabella Ferreira, Tyler Alvarez, Aasif Mandvi, Rico Paris, Teala Dunn, Addie Weyrich, Michelle Buteau, and Megan Mullally. This look super cheesy and unoriginal. Here's the...

Hulu’s ‘Crush’ Trailer Teases Chaotic High School Love Triangle (Video)
John Malkovich, Frank Grillo, Lilly Krug, and Cameron Monaghan in Shattered (2022)
Hulu’s “Crush” just dropped its first trailer, and let’s just say the trifecta playing the three main characters is fierce.

When Paige is forced to join her high school track team, she uses it as an opportunity to pursue the girl she’s had a crush on: Gabriela Campos (Isabella Ferreira). But she soon finds herself falling for an unexpected teammate, Gabby’s sister Aj (Auli’i Cravalho), and discovers what real love feels like.

“Crush” will also star Tyler Alvarez, TEala Dunn, Rico Paris, Addie Weyrich, Aasif Mandvi, Megan Mullally and Michelle Buteau.
