Ewen Bremner in Creation Stories (2021)
‘Creation Stories’ Film Review: A Muddled Look at Alan McGee’s Mythic Rise to Record Mogul-dom
Ewen Bremner in Creation Stories (2021)
This review of “Creation Stories” was first published on June 16, 2021 after the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Drug-fueled benders and a knack for finding promising musical acts defined several decades of Scottish producer Alan McGee‘s storied, fast-paced life. The irreverent man behind Creation Records, the fiercely independent label that launched a slew of prominent bands into international stardom, holds a treasure-trove of anecdotes.

Those accounts — from the early, no-expectations days to the downfall from his no-holds-barred lifestyle — were first poured into McGee‘s 2013 autobiography and have now been adapted for the screen by Dean Cavanagh and Irvine Welsh (“Trainspotting”) for actor-turned-director Nick Moran’s film “Creation Stories.” Danny Boyle is an executive producer.

The somewhat-successful framing device here, at least for most of the parade of memories, is McGee’s interview with a young reporter in Los Angeles. Ewen Bremner, best known for playing Spud in “Trainspotting” and its sequel,...

‘Creation Stories’ Review: An Over-Amped Flashback to Britpop’s ’90s Heyday
Image
Some movies endure as a treasured soundtrack to which the film itself becomes a mere footnote. That seems likely to prove the case with “Creation Stories,” a biopic of Creation Records’ founder Alan McGee that duly draws sonic fuel from the stellar array of Britpop bands he was involved with. But as directed by Nick Moran in obvious imitation of executive producer Danny Boyle’s most hyperbolic style, scripted by Irvine Welsh and Dean Cavanagh, this apparently loose interpretation of the subject’s memoir becomes a hyperventilating “Behind the Music” caricature, all familiar flash and precious little substance. Rlj Entertainment is releasing on demand and digital platforms in the U.S. on Feb. 25, following openings in most other territories.

McGee’s 2013 same-titled tome is a breezy yet cogent chronicle of a whirlwind career, written in the clear-eyed retrospect of sobriety after years of chemical excess. But the film immediately lunges...

Rock N Roll Biopic ‘Creation Stories’ With ‘Trainspotting’ Ties Acquired By Rlje Films Ahead Of Tribeca Premiere
Image
Exclusive: Rlje Films has acquired U.S. rights to Creation Stories, the rock biopic of Creation Records creator and founder Alan McGee that is directed by Nick Moran and stars Trainspotting alum Ewen Bremner. That’s one of several connections to the that 1996 film; Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh co-wrote the Creation Stories script with Dean Cavanagh, and Trainspotting director Danny Boyle is among the executive producers.

The deal comes ahead of the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Kirsty Mitchell, Suki Waterhouse, Thomas Turgoose, Leo Flanagan and Jason Isaacs also star in the Metro International Entertainment pic, which charts the true story of the rise and fall of McGee, credited as responsible for supplying the “Brit Pop” soundtrack to the 1990s, a decade of cultural renaissance known as Cool Britannia. It follows McGee through a drug-fueled haze of music and mayhem, with his dream bringing the world the...

Alan McGee
Creation Stories - Jennie Kermode - 16590
Alan McGee
If this film didn't take its title from Creation Records, one would have to consider it ironic, because there's nothing whatsoever that's creative about it. It's the story of the said company's founder, Alan McGee (variously played by Leo Flanagan and Ewen Bremner), who rises from life on a Glasgow housing estate to the pinnacle of music industry success, as represented by a sun lounger and a pool with random bikini-clad young women wandering around it. He wears sunglasses all the time. He makes pithy comments. Danny Boyle produces, and although Nick Moran is ostensibly in charge of the show, one can detect the former's presence through every predictable shot choice.

It begins, of course, with our young hero dwelling in supposed poverty, though actually he doesn't seem to be doing too badly by the standards of the time. His traditional working class father doesn't understand popular music or boys wearing.
