How ‘Pachinko’ Star Minha Kim Approached Season 2’s Cliffhanger:  “That’s When Sunja Finally Realized That She’s Tired”
Image
Apple TV+’s Pachinko Season 2 premiered just under 10 months ago, but many of the most emotional and devastating scenes are still fresh for actress Minha Kim, who portrays anchor character Sunja. Kim’s main character, a woman and mother who connects three generations of her family across the sweeping series based on Min Jin Lee’s book, endures many a hardship.

What might be freshest in the audience’s — especially those who have read the book — mind is the shocking moments in the finale when Sunja’s oldest son Noa (Kang Tae Ju) visits her one last time out of the blue before running away to start a new life for himself. He has just come to realize who his real father is — Koh Hansu (Lee Min-ho) — while he has grown up believing that Isak (Steve Sanghyun Noh) is his biological father. This drives Noa to an extreme reaction, virtually...

The Acclaimed Apple TV+ Series That K-Drama Fans Need To Watch Asap
Image
With series like "Severance" and "Slow Horses," Apple TV+ has a great library of original programming that continues to grow. However, between making your way through episodes of "Ted Lasso" or "Shrinking," you may have overlooked the streamer's period drama "Pachinko." Adapted from the best-selling 2017 novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, the story's East Asian setting, including Korea, and heartbreaking emotional beats make it perfect for any K-drama fan. Keeping that in mind, it's also important to point out that, despite its cast and setting, "Pachinko" is not quite technically a K-drama itself.

"Pachinko" has its narrative split across two time periods centered on matriarch Kim Sunja and her family. In the past, a younger Sunja (Kim Min-ha) endures the brutal Japanese occupation of Korea and being forced to relocate to Japan while pregnant with the illegitimate son of the Japan-based Korean mobster Koh Hansu (Lee Min-ho). As World War II begins,...

Korean Coming-Of-Age Film ‘Love In The Big City’ Set For North American Streaming Debut On Rakuten Viki
Image
Exclusive: Korean coming-of-age film Love in the Big City is set for a streaming release in North America on Rakuten Viki on December 24.

Adapted from a novel of the same name, the film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, released domestically in South Korea on October 1 and was also named as the closing film for the London Korean Film Festival.

Love in the Big City stars Kim Go-eun and Steve Sang-hyun Noh (Pachinko).

The novel was also adapted into an eponymous drama series in Korea on Tving, and available in North America and other territories on Rakuten Viki.

Love in the Big City tells the story of free-spirited Jae-hee (played by Kim), who stumbles upon a secret about Heung-soo (Noh Sang-hyun). Jae-hee and Heung-soo move in to live together, and the two “misfits” bond as...

‘Venom: The Last Dance’ tops Korea box office with 60% of takings
Image
Venom: The Last Dance topped the Korean box office on its first weekend, capturing more than 60% of ticket sales.

The third instalment in the Sony franchise took $4.2m from Friday to Sunday (October 25-27) for a cume of $5.7m since opening on October 23, according to Kobis, the Korean Film Council’s box office tracking system.

It may struggle to match the $15.2 taken by predecessor Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021 let alone the $24.6m taken by 2018’s Venom.

In second place was mystery drama A Normal Family, which took $730,000 on its second weekend – half of the $1.45m claimed on its opening weekend,...

‘Pachinko’ Creator Explains How That Heated Finale Confrontation Was Two Seasons in the Making
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the season two finale of Pachinko, “Chapter Sixteen.”]

For two seasons of Pachinko, Apple TV+’s series adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s novel about four generations of a Korean family living during and after Japanese rule, protagonist Sunja (Minha Kim) has wrestled with a devastating secret: The man who fathered her first child, Noa (Tae Ju Kang), is not Isak (Steve Sanghyun Noh), the sickly, late pastor whom she married shortly after becoming pregnant — but, rather, Hansu (Lee Minho), her wealthy first love who has ties to organized crime.

“Sunja, in some ways, can come off as such a fairytale character. It seems like she’s always good, like she always makes the right decision,” creator and showrunner Soo Hugh tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And yet, when you actually drill down into what she does in this show, she doesn’t always make the right decisions. For example, was it right of her not...

‘Pachinko’ Showrunner on Expanding the Book’s World — and Whether Those ‘Shōgun’ Emmys Changed the Race
Image
The Television Academy’s 2022 “Pachinko” snub is infamous around these parts.

Soo Hugh’s sweeping generational drama — based on the novel by Min Jin Lee — is easily one of the best TV shows of the decade. It’s won plenty of awards, including a Critic’s Choice Award and a Peabody, yet Season 1 was all but shut out of the Emmys.

But that was before “Shogun.”

“Pachinko” would have been nominated against Emmy favorites “Ozark,” “Better Call Saul,” “Stranger Things,” and “Succession,” — good shows in their own right, but lacking in diversity — none of which competed with “Shōgun” and paved the way for non-English winner with a majority-Japanese cast.

“‘Shōgun’ was such an incredible show,” Hugh said in an interview with IndieWire. “I’m happy with that comparison. Obviously Anna (Sawai) was in both shows and her performance was just glorious. The more shows we have that tell stories of...

Youn Yuh-jung, Kwon Eun-sung, Lee Min-ho, Anna Sawai, Jin Ha, Kim Kang-hoon, and Minha Kim in Pachinko (2022)
Pachinko Season 2 Episode 6 Recap: Anna Sawai's Naomi's Secret & 8 Other Reveals
Youn Yuh-jung, Kwon Eun-sung, Lee Min-ho, Anna Sawai, Jin Ha, Kim Kang-hoon, and Minha Kim in Pachinko (2022)
Spoilers are ahead for Pachinko season 2, episode 6.

In Pachinko season 2, episode 6, both the past and 1980s timelines are full of thrilling revelations and plot developments. This is a stark contrast to Pachinko season 2, episode 5, which spent a bulk of its runtime focusing on 1945 and the end of World War II. Previously, Yoseb (Han Jun-woo), Isak's (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh) brother, survived the Allied Forces' atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Thanks to Hansu (Lee Min-ho), a badly burned Yoseb was brought to the countryside where he was reunited with his wife, Kyunghee (Jung Eun-chae), and Sunja's (Kim Min-ha) family.

The cast of Pachinko's characters has also grown to include Mr. Kim (Kim Sung-kyu), an associate of Hansu's who is in love with Kyunghee. While Yoseb is unaware of his wife's attraction to Mr. Kim upon arriving in the countryside, he is full of anger. Still grieving his brother, Yoseb berates Hansu.

'Pachinko's Romance Is Way More Complicated Than You Think
Image
Apple TV+'s Pachinko continues to tell the story of its protagonist Kim Sunja (Minha Kim/Youn Yuh-Jung) against the gritty backdrop of World War II and 20th-century Japan. In Season 2, a lot has already transpired, considering Sunja's husband, Isak Baek (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh), dies in Episode 2 and Koh Hansu (Lee Min-Ho) appears on the horizon of Sunja's life once again. Although Pachinko is developing an entirely new storyline in terms of the events happening in Sunja and Solomon's (Jin Ha) life post-Solomon's exit from Shiffley's in Season 1, it is also making one major change in the way it's handling the past of its two important characters Sunja and Hansu. Unlike Min Jin Lee's book which does not pay much attention to Sunja and Hansu's complicated relationship after a certain point, Pachinko turns out to be more sensitive toward the love life of its protagonist. The Apple...

Pachinko Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Sunja's Mother's Fate & 5 Other Reveals
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Pachinko season 2, episode 4.

Pachinko season 2, episode 4, picks up where the third installment left off. In the World War II-era timeline, Sunja (Minha Kim) and her sons, Noa (Kim Kang-hoon) and Mozasu (Eunseong Kwon), start to settle into rural life, which is vastly different from their world in Pachinko season 2, episode 1. Even out in the rice fields, reminders of the war and the threat of bombings loom large in the background. Although Mozasu seems to like his life in the country, he spends his time whittling weapons and telling Mr. Kim (Kim Sungkyu) about the war.

While the second episode in the sophomore outing revealed the fate of Pachinko's Isak (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh), Sunja's late husband and Mozasu's biological father, the fourth episode illustrates that nowhere is safe or stable. Notably, Hansu (Lee Min-ho) was the one who promised that Sunja and the rest of Pachinko's cast...

‘Pachinko’ Creator on the Season 2 Scene That Still Makes Her Weep
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season two, episode two of Pachinko, “Chapter Ten.”]

Pachinko, Apple TV+’s ambitious series adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s novel about a Korean family’s fight for survival during and after the Japanese occupation of Korea, has never used episode titles. But if creator and showrunner Soo Hugh had to assign a title to the latest chapter of her breathtaking multigenerational saga, she would call it “The Boogeyman.”

Written by Hugh, Christina Yoon and Melissa Park, the second hour of Pachinko’s sophomore season reintroduces Isak (Steve Sanghyun Noh), the pastor husband of protagonist Sunja (Minha Kim), who, in the season one finale, was arrested in 1938 for trying to fight for labor unions — an effort seen as an affront against the Japanese emperor. Seven years later, Hansu (Lee Minho), Sunja’s wealthy first love who abandoned her while she was pregnant with their child, is able to negotiate the safe passage of a Japanese official’s family...

Isaks Fate & Solomons New Plan In Pachinko Season 2 Explained
Image
After a plot-heavy season opener, Pachinko's sophomore outing closes some of the show's more pressing threads in its second episode, all while setting up the future of Sunja (Minha Kim) and Solomon's (Jin Ha) stories. Bolstered by Pachinko's cast of characters, the first episode hammered home the Apple TV+'s series skill at telling parallel stories across generations, but it neglected to provide any resolution for Isak (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh). In season 1, Isak offers to marry Sunja, who's gotten pregnant by the dashing-yet-already-married Hansu (Lee Min-ho), after she nurses him back to health.

In Pachinko season 1's ending, Isak is arrested by Japanese officials for committing a political crime, which snowballs into Isak's brother, Yoseb (Han Jun-woo), losing his job by affiliation. Forced to provide for her sons, Noa (Kim Kang-hoon) and Mozasu (Eunseong Kwon), as well as her in-laws, Sunja sells kimchi at the local market. In Pachinko's 1980s timeline,...

Pachinko Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Sunja's Arrest & 7 Other Reveals
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Pachinko season 2, episode 1, "Chapter 9."

In Pachinko season 2, Sunja faces wartime struggles, selling kimchi to support her family amid discrimination and looming danger. Sunja's arrest for selling illegal rice wine leads to a tense encounter with Hansu, who offers her family refuge from the impending bombing of Japan. In the show's 1989 timeline, Solomon struggles to rebuild his career and takes his anger out on his grandmother, Sunja.

Apple TV+'s critically acclaimed Pachinko is back for a second season. Bolstered by Pachinko's cast of characters, the first episode is already a great reminder of just how compelling the intergenerational story of love and sacrifice can be. In season 1, the younger Sunja (Minha Kim) settles into life in Osaka, Japan, with Isak (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh), the minister who offered to marry her after she became pregnant with the dashing-yet-already-married Hansu's (Lee Min-ho) child. Meanwhile, in the 1980s, Solomon (Jin Ha), Sunja's grandson,...

‘Pachinko’ Creator Soo Hugh Talks ‘Exponentially Increased’ Stakes Of Season 2
Image
Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the first episode of Pachinko Season 2.

Pachinko creator Soo Hugh faced plenty of challenges in bringing an adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s novel to life in the first season from the trilingual story-telling to the periods of Sunja’s life featured in the show.

Season 2 of the Apple TV+ drama series will expand on Sunja’s story as she raises her two sons in Osaka, Japan after moving there with her husband Isak (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh). Last season ended with Sunja stepping up to be the breadwinner for her boys when Isak got arrested for a political crime.

“I think we established the heart of the show, the emotional heartbeat of the show, and it was really important that, going into season two, we made sure that heartbeat was still strong and beating,” Hugh told Deadline of last season. “We are so...

Pachinko Star Jin Ha Reflects on Past Comments About Solomon
Image
Jin Ha, who plays Solomon in Apple TV+'s hit series Pachinko, has previously discussed his personal connection to his character. However, as Season 2 quickly approaches, and Solomon begins a new personal journey, Jin Ha is ooking back on his prior comments and examines whether anything has changed. The series, adapted from the novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, tells the story of Kim Sunja and the Baek family over the span of 60 years, from their emigration from Korea to Japan in the 1930s to the younger generation thriving in the 1980s. Jin Ha was born in Korea, but moved to America as a child, and immediately understood his character's mindset. The actor went so far as to say that Solomon is who he himself would have become were he not an actor.

During MovieWeb's interview with Jin Ha and Pachinko's showrunner, Soo Hugh, we asked the...

Coming at a time of “rationalized” content spending across the industry, Disney’s continued commitment to localized originals for Asia-Pacific underscores the growing popularity of Korean drama and Japanese anime throughout the world, as well as the continued importance of the region as a long-term driver of revenue growth.

Disney tends not to release much data on the viewership of its international originals. But it provided some indicators...

The 2023 Independent Spirit Awards television nominations were announced Tuesday, December 13, three weeks after the corresponding film contenders were revealed. This is the third year that Film Independent will be honoring small screen programs and performers alongside movie creatives. Scroll down to see the full list of nominees for the 2023 TV Indie Spirits.

This year, the Best New Series (Scripted and Non-Scripted) and Best TV Ensemble Cast Spirit Awards categories remain intact, but the two individual TV acting ones have been overhauled. During today’s announcement, Film Independent President Josh Welsh said the organization hopes “to better reflect the diversity of incredible work being created” by establishing its gender-neutral Best Lead and Supporting TV Performance categories. 10 nominees are vying for each of these two awards, whereas only five apiece competed annually in the now-retired male and female categories.

‘Pachinko’ Bosses Talk “Resilience And Hope” Of Emotional Finale, Tease “Even More Dramatic” Season 2 Storylines
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the season one finale of Pachinko, titled “Chapter Eight.”

The Pachinko season ender offers optimism and growth from heartbreaking losses for nearly all generations of the Baek family.

The episode begins in 1938, years after Noa’s birth. Now seven years old, Noa prepares for baby brother Mozasu’s doljabi ceremony. Just before audiences can see what fate-determining item Mozasu picks, a remixed, pop version of the opening sequence livens things up.

From Mozasu’s dol to Hana’s (Mari Yamamoto) final moments, the finale spans the cycle of life. In the present, Hana’s surrounded by her loved ones, including Sunja (Yuh-jung Youn) and Etsuko (Kaho Minami), who have no choice but to accept her eventual death. Tragedy also strikes in the past, with Noa and Sunja (Minha Kim) learning that Isak (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh) has been arrested for suspected treason against the emperor.

‘Pachinko': How 3 Different Actresses Brought Sunja to Life in the Apple TV+ Series
Youn Yuh-jung, Kwon Eun-sung, Lee Min-ho, Anna Sawai, Jin Ha, Kim Kang-hoon, and Minha Kim in Pachinko (2022)
The ambitious Apple TV+ series “Pachinko” took 20 historical consultants from the United States, Korea and Japan, numerous translators, seven executive producers, two directors, two directors of photography, and 637 cast members to put together – 95 of whom are Asian. Directors Kogonada and Justin Chon split the first season in half, each directing four episodes, and it’s a testament to their collaborative vision that the show has drawn raves for its painterly aesthetic.

Lee’s novel tells the story of four generations, with one woman — Sunja — at the core. The show captures Sunja at three distinct points in her life: young childhood (Yu-na Jeon), teenage and young adulthood (Minha Kim), and older Sunja as a grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung).

Apple TV+

Korean-American filmmaker Kogonada, who helmed the acclaimed films “Columbus” and “After Yang” and directed episodes one, two, three and seven of “Pachinko,” related to the diasporic element of the story due to his family history.

‘Pachinko’s’ Main Title Design Was About ‘The Connection Between Family’
Image
Depicting an ancestral journey was key for main title designers Angus Wall and Nadia Tzuo in developing the title sequence for Apple TV Plus’ series, “Pachinko,” a show that traces the fate of a Korean family and spans multiple countries, decades and generations.

At the heart of the journey is Solomon Baek, played by Jin Ha, a young employee at an international firm. He returns to his roots, reconnecting with his father Mozasu (Soji Arai), owner of a pachinko game parlor, and grandmother Sunja (Youn Yuh-jung), with a lens on the younger Sunja (Minha Kim and Jeon Yuna), who leaves everything behind for a new life in Japan, a country that wants no part of her.

Based on Min Jin Lee’s rich novel, the show, which premieres March 25 on Apple TV Plus, has been adapted by series creator Soo Hugh, who scripted the title sequence into her drafts. The...

‘Pachinko’ Turns an Intimate Story Into a Historical Epic — and One of the Best Things on TV
Image
Apple+’s adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s historical-fiction epic Pachinko bounces back and forth between several phases of its heroine Sunja’s life: growing up in Korea under the yoke of Japanese rule, where she’s played as a girl in the 1920s by Yu-na Jeon, and as a young woman in the 1920s played by Minha Kim; then her late-Eighties retirement in Japan (where she’s played by Youn Yuh-jung), reflecting back on her life’s many triumphs, tragedies, and compromises. In one scene in 1989, Sunja and her...
