‘Dirty Angels’ Review

Stars: Eva Green, George Iskandar, Maria Bakalova, Ruby Rose, Emily Bruni, Jojo T. Gibbs, Rona-Lee Shimon | Written by Martin Campbell, Alissa Sullivan Haggis, Jonas McCord | Directed by Martin Campbell

Martin Campbell’s Dirty Angels opens in Afghanistan in 2021. Jake and her team are in a very bad spot. They’ve been captured and Isis leader Amir has offered them a choice. He’s going to have her men join in when he has her stoned her to death. If they don’t, he’ll shoot civilians until they do. Considering the civilians were there for the stoning, I’d have let him shoot them.

In any case, the stoning is interrupted by the arrival of a rescue team. They manage to get Jake, but then come under fire and are forced to leave the rest of the team behind. As they fly off, she watches as Amir personally executes them.

Maria Bakalova Teases 'Mayday' with Ryan Reynolds & Kenneth Branagh
Image
Maria Bakalova is everywhere. The talented Bulgarian actress has been seen in a swirl of new film and TV projects lately. Currently, the Dirty Angels star lends her voice as Princess Ilana Rostovic in Creature Commandos on Max, the first offering in James Gunn’s much-talked-about Dcu reboot. Earlier this year, Bakalova played Ivana Trump in The Apprentice, which just nabbed two Golden Globes nominations. She’s also set to star opposite Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh in Mayday, an upcoming action film directed and written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

“I've been lucky with the people that I got a chance to work with, not only because they're proven to be incredibly talented, gifted, and honestly great professionals, but they're really kind human beings,” Bakalova told MovieWeb in a recent interview. She added:

“[Ryan] has been very supportive, open, and very funny. It's been like a gift to be on set.

Dirty Angels Director Martin Campbell and Star Maria Bakalova Talk the Action Thriller (Interview)
Image
From Martin Campbell, the director of Casino Royale and The Protege, comes a new tense action thriller from Lionsgate, Dirty Angels. The film is based on female soldiers going undercover as medics to rescue teenagers caught between Isis and the Taliban. It stars Eva Green and Academy Award nominee Maria Bakalova. We had the opportunity to sit down and talk with director Martin Campbell and the film’s star, Maria Bakalova, ahead of the film’s release.

Dirty Angels follows an American soldier, Jake, who joins an all-women commando unit to help rescue a group of schoolgirls taken in Afghanistan. The mission is to gain the terrorists’ trust by posing as members of a relief organization. This is the type of action thriller that I enjoy. It’s a nicely balanced story mixed with shootouts, explosions, and great hand-to-hand combat.

Ruby Rose as Medic and Jojo T. Gibbs as Geek in Dirty Angels.

The 10 Best Romantic Comedies Of 2024, Ranked
Image
2024 was an ... unusual year for romantic comedies. As the genre continues its slow-motion migration into television and streaming, films that fit this once-omnipresent bill are no longer as common, and are rarely box office juggernauts. When a truly great rom-com lands, it's a cause for bona fide celebration. So when the /Film team looked at the state of the genre over the past twelve months to assemble our list of the 10 best romantic comedies of 2024, we found ourselves at an impasse. There simply weren't enough traditional rom-coms to fill an entire list, but there were a lot of movies that had rom-com flavor. Films that, it could be argued, were coming into being because of the absence of the more familiar forms of the genre -- the next evolution, if you will.So we hashed it out. And argued a bunch.. The result was this list, which blends the more...

Director Martin Campbell Defends 'Dirty Angels' Graphic Violent Scenes
Image
Martin Campbell, director of such great films as The Protegé, Casino Royale, and Golden Eye, is no stranger to crafting gripping action thrillers. Even if they must include violence. That's the case with Campbell's latest thrill ride, Dirty Angels, a non-stop action film about an all-women commando unit set on liberating a group of schoolgirls taken hostage in Afghanistan. Bottom line: Martin Campbell does not disappoint as a director. In a recent MovieWeb interview, Campbell defended the use of graphic violence here, noting:

"These are six women. They're military trained, right? I wanted all the violence to be realistic… to the point that those girls could actually do it. This is not heightened violence. This is violence on a military level. And I didn't want any superhero stuff. And it is fun, obviously, but they [the commando team] are well-trained, they are very good at their job. When push comes to shove,...

Dirty Angels Interview: Maria Bakalova and director Martin Campbell discuss making a grounded and action-packed fight against Isis
Martin Campbell at an event for The Legend of Zorro (2005)
Martin Campbell is an outstanding action orchestrator on the silver screen, having directed films like Goldeneye, Casino Royale, and Verticle Limit. He’s ready to cut to the quick with concise shooting and cuts that allow the impact on-screen to reverberate in your bones. His latest action-oriented feature for Lionsgate, Dirty Angels, takes a more grounded approach to the genre, with Eva Green, Maria Bakalova, and others fighting for the safe return of a group of women taken hostage by Isis.

We are delighted to be in Martin Campbell and Maria Bakalova’s company for this exclusive interview, which focuses on Dirty Angels and their excitement about working together on a gripping action blockbuster. During our conversation, Campbell talks about wanting to make a realistic female-led action movie that doesn’t have the group doing unconvincing feats. Campbell wants Dirty Angels to appear raw, grounded, and brutal.

We also discuss...

Fresh Ending Explained (In Detail)
Image
The Fresh ending explained the subtext of the horror-comedy and how it explores the pitfalls of online dating. Sebastian Stan stars as Steve, the seemingly charming new boyfriend of Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones). Noa is disillusioned by the online dating process. Fresh opens with her on a date with a man she met on an app, who talks down to the waiter, insults her clothes, and even steals the food that he made her pay for herself. She complains to her best friend Mollie (Jonica T. Gibbs) about her lack of success with dating, and Mollie tells her to adopt a "f*ck it" attitude.

Soon after, she meets Steve at the grocery store. They hit it off immediately and start dating, but after she agrees to go on a trip with him, she quickly learns that he has cannibalistic urges. Steve kidnaps women and cuts off pieces of their bodies to sell as meat,...

Luc Bessons DogMan Was Inspired by Disturbing True Events
Image
Luc Besson is known for his iconoclastic movies, as he continues to challenge the beliefs of his audience and seemingly cares little about a potential uproar. Bessons movies occasionally lack realism, at least to some extent, but the main focus of his projects is to move people. Whether it is in discomfort, hope, or confusion, the director has managed to evoke a myriad of emotions within his audience. Besson has been an established filmmaker for over three decades now, which seemingly allows him to explore his creativity beyond societys expectations and maybe even its limits.

One of his most recent movies, which was released in the United States at the beginning of 2024, has received split opinions, as it combines a variety of strong emotions. The dark thriller DogMan, which was written and directed by Besson, delivers a distressing story of childhood trauma and complex struggles with healing from cruelty. Even...

10 Best Cannibal Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
This article contains mention of violence and assault.

Though they're not exclusively horror movies, films about cannibalism have remained popular due to the taboo subject matter and graphic violence that entices audiences. More cannibal TV shows and movies are being made, and this may be because it's still a shocking and grotesque act that fewer filmmakers are willing to engage with. Additionally, cannibalism was made famous by one of the most high-profile films within the genre, The Silence of the Lambs, and has been a more significant part of horror since then. However, incorporating cannibalism into comedy, fantasy, and even romance can set a movie apart.

In an era when gore and cruelty are seen all across visual media and the internet, it's difficult for horror movies to shock audiences, but cannibalism can usually achieve this. Cannibalism can be used as a metaphor for intense social and cultural topics that are frequently overlooked.

10 Horror Movies to Watch If You Liked Blink Twice
Image
Zo Kravitz's Blink Twice is a psychological horror film that tells the story of two friends being whisked away to a remote island owned by an elusive billionaire. At first, Blink Twice portrays the island as a fun, nonstop party for the rich and famous. Protagonist Frida has the time of her life as she parties and garners the attention of billionaire Slater King. When Frida's best friend goes missing, she finally starts to see the island for what it is; a waking nightmare.

Slater King and his male companions have been drugging their female partners so they don't remember anything that happens at night. This leaves the women trapped in an endless cycle of torment that they forget by the following morning. Blink Twice is a dark film with a satisfying ending, but there are plenty of incredible films that focus on trapping a victim in a situation that isn't what it seems.

Daisy Edgar-Jones would want to reprise her role as Noa in a Fresh sequel. A Fresh sequel's impact might be diminished due to the absence of key characters from the original. The surprise element of Fresh was crucial; a sequel might struggle to recreate the same impact.

Daisy Edgar-Jones starred in one of the best horror movies of 2022, and she has now shared her idea for a sequel and while its great, it would face two big problems. After becoming known for her role as Marianne Sheridan in the TV series Normal People, Daisy Edgar-Jones starred in the 2022 horror movie Fresh. Directed by Mimi Cave in her directorial debut, Fresh was very well-received by critics, holding an 81% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its commentary on modern dating, story, and the performances of Jones and Sebastian Stan.

Cora Bora Review: Megan Stalters Starpower Is On Full Display In Queer Cringe Comedy
Image
Megan Stalter excels at playing deluded characters, bringing laughs and depth to Cora Bora's emotional journey. Cora's willful obliviousness turns screwball comedy into a nuanced exploration of self-discovery and change. Stalter's performance adds layers to Cora's messy life, revealing hidden truths with impeccable comedic timing.

While on the 2023 film festival circuit, Cora Bora was billed as comedian and Hacks scene-stealer Megan Stalters first leading role. For me, that was reason enough to prioritize seeing director Hannah Pearl Utts (Before You Know It) comedy-drama at Frameline47. Stalter delivered in spades, but much in the same way her character, aspiring musician Cora, masks her messy pain with music and self-delusion, Cora Bora masks a gut-punch character study in cringe-comedy trappings.

Meg Stalter is taking the lead in her latest feature “Cora Bora.”

The comedy, which premiered at the 2023 SXSW Festival, stars the “Hacks” breakout actress as the titular musician who goes home to win back her girlfriend only to realize it’s much more than her love life that needs salvaging.

Hannah Pearl Utt directs the comedy from a script by Rhianon Jones. The cast includes Jojo T. Gibbs, Manny Jacinto, Ayden Mayeri, Thomas Mann, Chrissie Fit, Andre Hyland, Margaret Cho, Chelsea Peretti, and Darrell Hammond. The film features original music and a score composed by indie artist Miya Folick.

“I’m thrilled for audiences to get to see Meg in a leading role and to fall for her character the way I have,” director Utt said in a press statement.

The IndieWire review called Stalter a “whirlwind and a universe unto herself” who boasts “her unique brand of uncomfortably confident loser” onscreen.

Luc Besson
Interview: Caleb Landry Jones and Jojo T. Gibbs Talk DogMan
Luc Besson
In the latest feature from Luc Besson, a young man seeks revenge in an original fashion. Caleb Landry Jones is fantastic as the DogMan. As ‘Douglas Munroe,’ the actor is given the chance to take on the role fearlessly. The story revolves around a man who was horribly abused. His love and appreciation of dogs follows him into his adult years, leaving him angry at the world around him. And thankfully, he trains man’s best friend to take care of other, not-so-nice, people in his life. The film also stars Jojo T. Gibbs and the two are terrific together.

Recently, we spoke with Caleb Landry Jones and Jojo T. Gibbs about the film. Caleb opened up about working with Luc Besson and taking on such a powerful role. For Ms. Gibbs, she discussed working with Caleb and both of the two seemingly found inspiration working off of each other.

‘Civil War’ Premiere: Nick Offerman On If Donald Trump Inspired His Potus Take & If He Would Run For Office With Megan Mullally
Image
Nick Offerman plays the Potus in the dystopian action film Civil War, but although some liken his character to Donald Trump, the actor didn’t think about him during filming.

“Honestly, no,” Offerman told Deadline during the film’s premiere. “When you see the movie, it’s so unattached to anything in modern politics, not only in our country but any country. It’s like doing a play where I’m playing a baseball player, and people say, ‘Did you ever think of your favorite team, the Cubs?’ And I say, ‘No, it’s a brilliant piece of fiction.'”

He continued, “From the get-go, it clearly wasn’t based on anything in reality, and so, that’s a distraction, and my job is to immediately say, ‘Who is this guy? And how can I best serve Alex [Garland’s] vision.'”

Donald Trump was not on Nick Offerman's mind as he...

On-Air Film Review: Luc Beeson’s ‘DogMan’ is Canine Collaboration
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on March 28th, 2024, reviewing “DogMan,” a new film by director Luc Beeson (“The Fifth Element” “Lucy”), in wide release on April 5th, see local listings.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

The DogMan is Doug (Caleb Landry Jones) and as the movie begins we see him busted by New Jersey law enforcement, where they find several dogs in his truck, and he’s also in drag as Marilyn Monroe. Wanting to get into his motivations, they put their psychiatrist Evelyn (Jojo T. Gibbs) on the case, and she begins to unravel the DogMan’s life, which includes childhood abuse, paralysis and Shakespeare. He also has a psychic connection to the dogs he keeps, using them as an army to protect and do break-ins for him. Finally, because of all these circumstances, he lands a job as a drag queen,...

DoMan Stars Caleb Landry Jones & Jojo T. Gibbs Praise Luc Besson's "Bold" And "Specific" Artistry
Image
Luc Besson directs DogMan, a character-driven thriller with Caleb Landry Jones in the lead role. The movie follows Doug's journey from abuse to becoming a master of dogs and performing in a drag show. Jones and Gibbs discuss their unique experiences working with Besson on the film.

Luc Besson returns to the director's chair with another unique take on the character-driven thriller genre with DogMan. The movie serves as Besson's first directorial effort in five years, with his previous being the 2019 action-thriller Anna. The French filmmaker is best known for his action genre efforts, having directed the likes of La Femme Nikita, Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, and the Scarlett Johansson-led Lucy, while also penning the scripts for Taxi, Jason Statham's Transporter trilogy and Liam Neeson's Taken, among many others.

The movie sees Besson returning to his Léon past as he's crafted a character-driven story with loose thriller elements revolving around Doug,...

Oscar-Nominee Alex Garland Is Taking a Break From Directing After ‘Civil War’
Image
After a successful premiere in March, Alex Garland’s upcoming dystopian action thriller Civil War is preparing for its April 12, 2024 theatrical release. The movie promises to be a very interesting take on a (not so) alternative America, plagued by a civil war between the separatist “Western Forces” led by Texas and California and the government. This “Second American Civil War” will be shown through the eyes of a journalist who travels around the country, experiencing the horrors of war.

The official synopsis for the movie describes the plot as follows: “A journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.”

The movie has some big names attached to the project, as many fans are eagerly awaiting the upcoming premiere. The cast of the movie includes:

Kirsten Dunst as Lee, a war photojournalist Wagner Moura as Joel,...

Civil War Director Alex Garland Is Retiring From Filmmaking: 'I’m Not Planning to Direct Again'
Image
Alex Garland feels Civil War will be his last time directing. Despite critical acclaim, Garland has grown frustrated with directing and plans to retreat back to writing. While Garland still loves film, he is falling out of love with filmmaking due to the pressures and interactions involved.

Ex Machina and Men director Alex Garland thinks that his upcoming dystopian war movie, Civil War, will be the last time he directs a project. Speaking with The Guardian, the filmmaker has said in the past that he already wants to give up directing and retreat back to writing, but while many thought the filmmaker was perhaps just having a bad day, Garland insists that he still feels the same and Civil War will be his last time calling the shots from behind the camera.

“Nothing’s changed. I’m in a very similar state. I’m not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future.

Another Behind-the-Scenes Look at Alex Garland's 'Civil War' Movie
Image
"They're risking their lives to show the world what happened." A24 has revealed a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Alex Garland's Civil War movie, his next new action thriller arriving in theaters in April. It's about a fictional (or not?) civil war in America following a crew of photojournalists on a "road trip" around America. After the two previous trailers for this movie, this preview finally reveals that it's actually about the journalists and really focused on them, not the details of the civil war and/or why it's happening. Still not so sure about this concept right now. "It felt immersive and it felt incredibly real, and it was chilling." The excellent ensemble cast for Garland's Civil War includes Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. Gibbs, Jess Matney, plus Jesse Plemons. It is a better "come watch this movie" promo than the other trailers,...

DogMan Star JoJo T. Gibbs on Luc Besson and Starring in Civil War
Image
A Luc Besson film provokes thought as much it takes viewers along a mesmerizing emotional journey. Besson is the brainchild behind Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, and Lucy. Besson's new film, DogMan, which he wrote and directed, is a gripping character study and one of the most captivating — if not surreal and edgy — psychological dramas to hit the screen recently.

The film also gives us a fascinating protagonist in Douglas (Caleb Landry Jones in a winning turn), an eccentric and wounded soul who recounts his tale to a prison psychologist (JoJo T. Gibbs). Leaping from past to present, we discover how Douglas wound up behind bars and how his diverse pack of dogs became his most loyal allies. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers and films with inventive endings, dive into this exceptional film. In excerpts from an exclusive MovieWeb interview,...

The dystopian action film, directed by Alex Garland, follows military-embedded journalists racing against rebel factions. Actor Jojo T. Gibbs praises co-stars Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura's performances, highlighting director Garland's work ethic.

Caleb Landry Jones on DogMan and Becoming an Octopus
Image
Caleb Landry Jones will never forget his experience in DogMan. In writer/director Luc Besson’s trippy new thriller, the X-Men: First Class and Get Out star survived his fair share of creative chaos. For starters, he had to become an octopus. Best to expound upon later, so let’s start with some facts.

There were more than 120 trained (ish) dogs prancing around in Besson’s twisted revenge drama. Plus, canine handlers and the crew, of course. Meanwhile, the unconventional storyline gave Jones plenty to nosh on creatively, losing himself in a transformative performance as Douglas, a mysterious and crafty performer who uses a wheelchair and has a troubling past. Douglas works in drag for a living, and his deep connection to a pack of loyal canines is downright surreal.

“Dogs are dogs,” Jones told us about working with his four-legged companions. “Dogs would do whatever they want, no matter how you train them.

Dogman Review: Reality Literally Bites in Luc Besson's Latest Crime Film
Image
On a cinematically rainy night, a truck packed with dogs is pulled over by the cops. The driver is Marilyn Monroe in the famous getup from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The pink, the wig and the makeup ruined by blood. At the station, the driver, a wheelchair-using fellow named Douglas Munrow (Caleb Landry Jones), is visited by police psychologist Evelyn (Jojo T. Gibbs), a single mother who has her own history with violence. Douglas starts telling his story. The narrative jumps back and forth, between the present and the non-linear past that holds so many things: an abusive family, Shakespeare, unrequited love, crafty heists, drag artists and chili. Most of all, it holds a lot of pain. And dogs. So many dogs. Let’s get it out...
