Much Like ‘Kneecap’, Gaelic-Language Drama Series ‘The Island’ Is A “Gesture Of Defiance”
Image
Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s strand in which, each fortnight, we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track… So we’re going to do the hard work for you.

This week we profile the world’s first ever high-end Gaelic TV drama series, which comes from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. With only around 60,000 Gaelic-language speakers left in the world, The Island is doing wonders for representation and at the same time constitutes so much more — an entertaining, twisty crime thriller featuring a dose of star power in the form of Industry breakout Sagar Radia. Commissioners and producers tell us the show makes a statement, and they are now setting their sights on international sales.

‘An t-Eilean’: Why the BBC Is Betting on the U.K.’s First Gaelic Prestige Drama Series ‘The Island’
Image
An t-Eilean, or: The Island. That is the title of a prestige crime drama set on the Western Isles of Scotland that was launched by the BBC on Tuesday evening on its BBC iPlayer streaming service and BBC Alba, the Scottish Gaelic-language free-to-air channel that the U.K. public service broadcaster co-owns with Mg Alba. Alba is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland. And An t-Eilean is, according to the networks, the U.K.’s “first-ever high-end Gaelic drama series.”

That also makes it the biggest Gaelic drama in BBC Alba’s history and, according to The Guardian, the most expensive series ever made in Scots Gaelic with a budget of a £1 million ($1.2 million) per episode.

Described as “a tense, twisting story of lies, loss and long-buried secrets,” the series of four 50- minute long episodes stars Sorcha Groundsell (His Dark Materials, Shetland, The Innocents) as Kat Crichton, a Family...

Channel 4 To Spotlight ‘The Trial Of Michael Jackson’

Michael Jackson’s trial will be spotlighted in a Channel 4 doc series from Wonderhood Studios. The Trial of Michael Jackson [working title] will feature contributors who have never spoken before to plot the story of the singer’s 2005 criminal trial alongside his rise to fame and life in the spotlight. It will explore Jackson’s relationship with the media and delve into his life story. In 2005, Jackson went on trial for molesting Gavin Arvizo, who was 13 years old at the time of the alleged abuse. Jackson was acquitted on all counts several months later. Many years on, Channel 4-hbo’s Leaving Neverland aired allegations from two other men of sexual abuse by Jackson when they were boys, and this remains one of the network’s best-performing shows of the past few years. The Trial was commissioned by Channel 4’s senior commissioning editor Anna Miralis and Alisa Pomeroy,...

Douglas Henshall in Shetland (2013)
Shetland Series 7 Cast: Meet the New Characters
Douglas Henshall in Shetland (2013)
Shetland’s Series 7 return is a bittersweet one for fans of the Scottish BBC crime drama. The six-episode run will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last in the lead role of Di Jimmy Perez. Henshall’s departure though, doesn’t mean the end for Shetland, which has been renewed for an eighth series due to arrive in 2023. A new, as-yet-unannounced, lead actor will be joining the returning cast for that run.

Series 7, which starts on BBC One on Wednesday the 10th of August at 9pm, promises to tie up Perez’s loose ends and follow up on last series’ will-they-won’t-they frisson with Irish carer Meg. Before Perez says his final goodbye to the evidence board though, there’s a missing person case to solve, and a host of new characters to interrogate. Here’s who he’ll be meeting…

Maniff 2019: ‘Far From The Apple Tree’ Review
Stars: Sorcha Groundsell, Victoria Liddelle, Lynsey-Anne Moffat, Margaret Fraser, Adrienne-Marie Zitt, Scarlett Mack | Written by Ben Soper | Directed by Grant McPhee

Directed by Grant McPhee (Night Kaleidoscope), low budget horror Far From The Apple Tree stars Sorcha Groundsell as Judith, a young artist who takes a job as the live-in assistant to acclaimed visual artist Roberta Roslyn (Victoria Liddelle), with the promise of her own show at some point in the future. Moving into Roberta’s spacious rural mansion, Judith begins cataloguing her idol’s work, which is closely linked to the occult. However, she becomes increasingly unsettled after encountering images of Roberta’s missing daughter, Maddy, who appears to be Judith’s exact double.

There are plenty of creepy ideas in Ben Soper’s screenplay, and the film toys with intriguing themes such as artistic obsession, usurpation and possession. However, the script only ends up scratching the surface of those ideas,...

Netflix Prohibits Actors From Talking About ‘Binge-Watching’ During Interviews, Says Guy Pearce
Ever since Netflix entered the original television game with the debut of “House of Cards” in February 2013, the term “binge-watching” has become the default word to describe the act of streaming multiple episodes of a series in a short period of time. The streaming giant singlehandedly popularized the act of binge-watching, but it turns out Netflix is not too fond of the word. Guy Pearce revealed on the Empire Film Podcast he was prohibited by Netflix to talk about binge-watching in interviews promoting his Netflix series “The Innocents.”

“I don’t think Netflix likes the term ‘binge,'” Pearce said when asked by Empire if viewers would binge-watch “The Innocents.” “When we did the promotion for [‘The Innocents’] in the [United States], we were strictly sort of instructed beforehand not to talk about ‘binge-watching.'”

While the term “binge-watching” refers specifically to television, the word has proven troublesome with some people since...

’The Innocents’ Cast and Crew Discuss That Berserk Ending and Give Hope for Season 2
Guy Pearce and Sorcha Groundsell in The Innocents (2018)
[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers from Season 1 of “The Innocents,” including the finale.]

“The Innocents,” Netflix’s British/Norwegian series that puts a supernatural twist on the star-crossed romance, concluded on quite the cliffhanger. After eight episodes in which young lovers June (Sorcha Groundsell) and Harry (Percelle Ascott) ran away from home only to discover she’s a shapeshifter, their adventures came to a violent, disastrous end.

In the action-packed episode, after secrets are revealed and sacrifices are made, two people end up dead, one person is in police custody, two people are rendered comatose, and June is mortally wounded. IndieWire spoke to the cast and crew of the series about the finale and whether or not Season 2 is in the cards. While creators Hania Elkington and Simon Duric couldn’t confirm the series will continue, their caginess was perhaps the best indicator that a second season seems likely.

Below, check out what the cast and creators could...

‘The Innocents’ Review: Netflix’s Bonkers Shapeshifting Drama Revels in the Chaotic Messiness of Love
Natascha McElhone, Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Laura Morante, Hailee Steinfeld, and Douglas Booth in Romeo & Juliet (2013)
As doomed romances go, “Romeo & Juliet” is the pinnacle of young love, outsized emotions, and disastrous decision-making. What often falls by the wayside, however, is the part that the adults play in creating the conditions for the inevitable tragedy. Netflix’s “The Innocents” highlights this side of the conflict and how the central teenage lovebirds inherit the mess that their elders have made, often in the name of a horribly misguided love.

June (Sorcha Groundsell) leads a sheltered, claustrophobic existence thanks to her controlling dad John (Sam Hazeldine), who keeps her from having any sort of life outside of her classes and caring for her agoraphobic brother Ryan (Arthur Hughes). But on the eve of her 16th birthday — the day that John plans to move the family to a remote island even further removed from people — she and her secret boyfriend Harry (Percelle Ascott) run away together to London.

Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man (2002)
Review: Netflix’s ‘The Innocents’
Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man (2002)
There may be no feeling more identifiable than those teenage years—the sensation of being out-of-place, clumsily mishandling your nascent adult powers and oftentimes stuck in the wrong skin altogether. This itchy sensation has long been the province of superhero comics and movies—it’s what fuels, say, the long-running “Spider-Man” franchise. And it’s put to clever and evocative use in Netflix’s “The Innocents,” a new series whose lead character (Sorcha Groundsell) has the power to shift between bodies; unlike most superheroes, though, she can barely control her gift and seeks to keep it hidden. Teens, the show’s obvious intended audience, will relate to “The Innocents'” high dudgeon, but adults will find a show that punches above its weight, defined by both its stirringly dramatic tone and the two charming performances at its center.

Groundsell’s June, who’s on the eve of her 16th birthday as the show begins,...

‘The Innocents’ Trailer: A Supernatural ‘Curse’ Jeopardizes Lives and Young Love in New Netflix Series — Watch
Netflix received critical acclaim early this year for an eight-episode (so far) British series about teen runaways who fall for one another, “The End of the F***ing World.” The streaming service hopes for a successful repeat with “The Innocents,” and just debuted that show’s newest trailer. While “The End of the F***ing World” featured a possible-psychopath protagonist, “The Innocents” stars Sorcha Groundsell (“Clique”) as a young woman who shape-shifts, transforming herself into humans who bear little resemblance to her blue-eyed self.

Groundsell’s June McDaniel learns of her unique ability after she and fellow classmate Harry Polk (Percell Ascott) flee their stern families. Well, what’s left of their families: June’s mother, a fellow shape-shifter, abandoned her three years ago, worried about harming her child. Golden Globe nominee Guy Pearce (“Mildred Pierce”) plays Halvorson, a professor who vows to reconnect and cure mother and daughter.

‘The Innocents’ Trailer: Netflix’s Next Big Ya Series Follows a Shape-Shifting, Star-Crossed Teen Romance
Netflix knows what its subscribers want out of its slightly younger-skewing original programming: more stories about powerful teen girls with big secrets, and the boys who love them. Call it the “Stranger Things” effect, and for the streaming giant’s latest new series, it’s taking on a surprising new shape. Literally.

“The Innocents” ostensibly follows the star-crossed romance of optimistic teenagers June (Sorcha Groundsell) and Harry (Percelle Ascott), who run away from their seemingly uncool families in hopes of starting a new life together. Admittedly, it’s already a bad plan (when do these types of things ever work out?), but it takes on an added twist when June is revealed to be a shape-shifter. And she’s not alone. Oh, and a ton of people want to find her.

Per the series’ official synopsis, that includes “a mysterious professor [who] reveals that June is not alone: there are more shifters out there like her,...

‘The Innocents’ Gets Premiere Date On Netflix; First-Look Trailer For British Teen Supernatural Drama
Netflix has set August 24 for the premiere of The Innocents and released a first-look trailer for the British teen supernatural drama series.

Created and written by Hania Elkington and Simon Duric, The Innocents centers on teenagers Harry and June who run away from their repressive families to be together and are derailed by an extraordinary discovery — June’s ability to shape-shift. As the star-crossed lovers struggle to control this strange new power, a mysterious professor reveals that June is not alone: there are more shifters out there like her, and he promises to cure June and reunite her with the mother who deserted her three years ago. But as their journey becomes increasingly fraught with danger, Harry and June’s love for each other is tested to breaking point and they’re faced with a choice: keep their innocent dream alive, or embrace that their lives have changed and risk everything.
