An t-Eilean, or: The Island. That is the title of a prestige crime drama set on the Western Isles of Scotland that was launched by the BBC on Tuesday evening on its BBC iPlayer streaming service and BBC Alba, the Scottish Gaelic-language free-to-air channel that the U.K. public service broadcaster co-owns with Mg Alba. Alba is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland. And An t-Eilean is, according to the networks, the U.K.’s “first-ever high-end Gaelic drama series.”

That also makes it the biggest Gaelic drama in BBC Alba’s history and, according to The Guardian, the most expensive series ever made in Scots Gaelic with a budget of a £1 million ($1.2 million) per episode.

Michael Jackson’s trial will be spotlighted in a Channel 4 doc series from Wonderhood Studios. The Trial of Michael Jackson [working title] will feature contributors who have never spoken before to plot the story of the singer’s 2005 criminal trial alongside his rise to fame and life in the spotlight. It will explore Jackson’s relationship with the media and delve into his life story. In 2005, Jackson went on trial for molesting Gavin Arvizo, who was 13 years old at the time of the alleged abuse. Jackson was acquitted on all counts several months later. Many years on, Channel 4-hbo’s Leaving Neverland aired allegations from two other men of sexual abuse by Jackson when they were boys, and this remains one of the network’s best-performing shows of the past few years. Shetland’s Series 7 return is a bittersweet one for fans of the Scottish BBC crime drama. The six-episode run will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last in the lead role of Di Jimmy Perez. Henshall’s departure though, doesn’t mean the end for Shetland, which has been renewed for an eighth series due to arrive in 2023. A new, as-yet-unannounced, lead actor will be joining the returning cast for that run.

Series 7, which starts on BBC One on Wednesday the 10th of August at 9pm, promises to tie up Perez’s loose ends and follow up on last series’ will-they-won’t-they frisson with Irish carer Meg. Ever since Netflix entered the original television game with the debut of “House of Cards” in February 2013, the term “binge-watching” has become the default word to describe the act of streaming multiple episodes of a series in a short period of time. The streaming giant singlehandedly popularized the act of binge-watching, but it turns out Netflix is not too fond of the word. Guy Pearce revealed on the Empire Film Podcast he was prohibited by Netflix to talk about binge-watching in interviews promoting his Netflix series “The Innocents.”

“The Innocents,” Netflix’s British/Norwegian series that puts a supernatural twist on the star-crossed romance, concluded on quite the cliffhanger. After eight episodes in which young lovers June (Sorcha Groundsell) and Harry (Percelle Ascott) ran away from home only to discover she’s a shapeshifter, their adventures came to a violent, disastrous end.

In the action-packed episode, after secrets are revealed and sacrifices are made, two people end up dead, one person is in police custody, two people are rendered comatose, and June is mortally wounded. IndieWire spoke to the cast and crew of the series about the finale and whether or not Season 2 is in the cards. While creators Hania Elkington and Simon Duric couldn’t confirm the series will continue, their caginess was perhaps the best indicator that a second season seems likely.

Netflix has just released an announcement teaser for their upcoming British teen supernatural drama series The Innocents. They also announced the cast of the series which includes Guy Pearce, Sorcha Groundsell (Clique) and Percelle Ascott (Wizard vs. Aliens).

The series was created by Hania Elkington and Simon Duric and it's described as "a teenage love story with supernatural twists." I'm definitly intrigued by the promo and it looks like it could end up being a great new series.

The Innocents revolves around teenagers Harry (Ascott) and June (Groundsell). When the pair run away from their repressive family lives to be together, they are thrown into an extraordinary journey of self-discovery that derails their innocent dream. Secrets kept from them by their respective parents test their love to breaking point, and the extraordinary gift they possess unleashes powerful forces intent on dividing them forever.

Pearce will take on the role of a character named Halvorson.

Netflix has set the cast for British teen supernatural drama series The Innocents. Guy Pearce (L.A. Verve picks up UK rights to Scott Graham’s Shell follow-up.

Verve Pictures has acquired UK rights to Scott Graham’s Shell follow-up Iona, which will get its world premiere as the closing night film of the Edinburgh Film Festival.

Iona follows a young woman and her teenage son who flee Glasgow seeking refuge from a violent crime.

Ruth Negga, Douglas Henshall, Michelle Duncan, Tom Brooke, Ben Gallagher and Sorcha Groundsell star in the film which is a BFI and Creative Scotland presentation.

The Bard Entertainments production was made in association with Boudica Silver and co-produced with Hanfgarn & Ufer and Zdf in co-operation with Arte.

Colin Burch, managing director of Verve Pictures commented: “We are delighted to be releasing ‘Iona’ and to be working again with Scott Graham and Margaret Matheson. Iona is a wonderful film that fulfills the great promise shown in Shell”.

Scott Graham’s drama stars Ruth Negga of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The 69th Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) is to close with the world premiere of Scott Graham’s Iona on June 28 at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh.

Shot entirely on location in Scotland, the film stars Ruth Negga (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), Douglas Henshall (Shetland), Tom Brooke (The Boat That Rocked) and Michelle Duncan (Atonement), with debuts by two Scottish actors, Ben Gallagher and Sorcha Groundsell.

Iona is director Graham’s second film following his award winning Shell in 2012.

Graham said: ‘I discovered many films and filmmakers at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Edinburgh was my home all through my twenties and it was in venues like Filmhouse and the Cameo where I learned the value of the stories we tell and the emotions we share.
