Netflix Untamed episode 4 recap: Lucy was keeping a big secret
Image
This post contains spoilers from Untamed episode 4 from this point forward.

The closing moments of episode 3 revealed that there's some mysterious person who Lucy Cook trusted, but we don't know who that person is just yet. Untamed episode 4 begins with Lucy standing on the ledge of her home and remembering her mother. As Begay told Jay in episode 3, he saw her on the cliff behind his house, Lucy's old house, but she runs away when he tries to talk to her. She runs back to her tent, which she's sharing with the girl from the squatter village. Lucy goes to the cave area where Naya got trapped and grabs the gas mask. What was she up to?

While someone who knew Lucy Cook when she was young waits for Turner at the office, Turner and Naya head back into the mine to see what they can find. Bats swarm around them,...

Image
The long-awaited return of Street Fighterto the big screen has cast another iconic character from the video game franchise. Chun-Li will be making her presence known in the new film, which has already cast several major characters that longtime fans will instantly recognize.

According to Deadline, Presence star Callina Liang has joined the upcoming Street Fighter reboot as Chun-Li. She joins a star-studded cast that includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns, and Orville Peck. In the source material, Chun-Li is known as a martial artist and Interpol officer who seeks revenge against the murderer of her father, the franchise's main antagonist, M. Bison. Her inclusion likely means that audiences will see Bison on the big screen after Raul Julia portrayed the character in the 1994 cult classic. Street Fighter is set to be directed by Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip).

Chun-Li was previously featured in...

Bad Genius Review: Sat Cheating Thriller Gets a Passing Grade
Image
Bad Genius remakes a 2017 Thai film about a group of enterprising high school students who hatch a ridiculous scheme to cheat on the Sat (Scholastic Aptitude Test). The western version updates the setting to Seattle and adds a racial component to themes of class and socioeconomic disparity. A likable ensemble elevates a middling script with varying degrees of flawed logic, predictability, and a truly implausible third act. The teens would have to work miracles to actually succeed in their far-fetched mission. That said, the film's overall message of how the rich never play by the rules rings true.

Welcome to Exton Pacific High School

2.5/5 Bad Genius DramaThriller

Bad Genius follows a gifted student who devises a scheme to assist wealthy classmates in cheating on exams, risking her future for financial gain. The film delves into the pressures of academic success and the moral dilemmas faced by a young scholar.

Benedict Wong & Bad Genius Director Break Down Heist Remake's Themes
Image
Gen Z students tackle academic injustice and class warfare in Bad Genius, which remakes 2017's hit Thai movie for an American audience. Set to arrive in theaters on October 11, the film is directed by J.C. Lee (once a supervising producer in the similarly scandalous How To Get Away With Murder) and co-written by Lee and Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah. The new adaption is similar in story to the original, as high-achieving high school student Lynn decides the only way to pay for college is to run a cheating ring operation for high-class students who otherwise won't make the grade.

Relative newcomer Callina Liang plays Lynn in her first leading role, but she counts on support (both on and offscreen) from 3 Body Problem's Benedict Wong, who plays her doting but strict father. Taylor Hickson and Samuel Braun play her classmates and accomplices Grace and Sam,...

Bad Genius Stars On Recreating Hit Thai Movie For American Audiences
Image
Bad Genius, an American remake of the hit 2017 Thai film, is set to arrive in theaters on October 11. The new adaptation is directed by J.C. Lee, who previously served as supervising producer on Love, Victor and How To Get Away With Murder, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Captain America: Brave New World's Julius Onah. The story closely mirrors its source material, following a bright young high school student who funds her future college tuition by starting a cheating ring for the higher-class, lower-intelligence kids in her class. But there is one major twist that sets Bad Genius apart from its predecessor, and that is the interplay of race in American society.

While the Thai film focuses on class struggles, the Bad Genius remake naturally incorporates the country's diversity an undercurrent that's especially relevant in the wake of the Supreme Court reversing affirmative action. Callina Liang plays the pluck protagonist Lynn,...

Film Review: Bad Genius (2024) by J. C. Lee
Image
Was Nattawut Poonpiriya‘s “Bad Genius” good? No, it was great. It was so great that almost all of the Asia Pacific from India to Australia loved it. It was so great that Bollywood wanted a version of their own, and made “Farrey” in 2023. But like anything that is great about Asian cinema, Hollywood also wants a piece of it. TV and stage writer, J. C. Lee in his debut as a director, offers his “Bad Genius” where he takes what was basic off the original and filled the rest with anything symptomatically Hollywood, including this basicness.

The basicness here means that this is identifiably “Bad Genius” in its core as a narrative — all the plot points are there, all the stakes, and consequences. It is remarkably shorter: some 30 minutes shorter than both the Thai and Bollywood versions. The whole set up remains the same: highschool poster girl and boy...

Callina Liang Stars in Cheating Thriller 'Bad Genius' Remake Trailer
Image
"No one can do what you do." Vertical has revealed an official trailer for Bad Genius, an English-language 2024 remake of the hit Thai film of the same name from 2017. This new version is set for a US release in October this fall, despite not showing up at any other festivals or elsewhere. The original Bad Genius from Thailand was a huge hit - we raved about it back in 2017 with this glowing review and it set new box office records in Thailand. It's a twisty, complex thriller about exam cheating and the students caught up in this scheme. Genius scholarship student Lynn Kang starts a cheating operation at her elite private school to fund her college dreams, giving her a unique opportunity to challenge the American education system, and her morals, in the process. This version stars Callina Liang (a breakout actress who also stars in Soderbergh's Presence ghost thriller), Jabari Banks,...

Vertical Takes North America On ‘Bad Genius,’ J.C. Lee’s English-Language Remake Of Thai Thriller
Image
Exclusive: Vertical has acquired North American rights to Bad Genius, an English-language remake of the same-name Thai thriller, from Picturestart, Picture Perfect Federation, and Little Ray Media. Marking the directorial debut of J.C. Lee, a veteran producer whose credits include The Morning Show and How to Get Away with Murder, the film is slated to hit select theaters in the U.S and Canada on October 11.

Bad Genius is a high-stakes, high-octane thriller about a diverse group of students who team up to fight a system of injustice and inequity and take down the rigged academic institutions around them. When Freeform officials decided to cut short this story of the witches of Fort Salem, they should have given Eliot Laurence 12 episodes for its final season instead of the usual 10.

That way, Motherland: Fort Salem Season 3 Episode 9 wouldn't have had to be so jam-packed with storylines.

As a result, storylines on which viewers had been waiting, including the trial of the Bellweather Unit and Raelle and Scylla's wedding ceremony, flat out got short shrift as Laurence and company had to scramble to set up the series finale.

Which is a shame. There were enough developments for a couple of episodes, but significant action ended up having to take place offstage to speed along events. Only so much can be crammed into 42 minutes.

Abigail's proposal that the Bellweather Unit turn themselves in was wise, as then there was no longer any reason for the Camarilla troops to continue to occupy The Cession.

Abigail
Motherland: Fort Salem Season 3 Episode 2 Review: The Price of Work
Abigail
Boy, are the young witches of the Bellweather Unit in over their heads!

That became even more apparent on Motherland: Fort Salem Season 3 Episode 2.

The problem is that when they were attending Fort Salem, there was a command structure, and they were given orders, which they followed at least a good portion of the time.

Although let's face it, they freelanced way too much. Sometimes that worked, sometimes it didn't.

Now that they're on the run, it's all making it up as they go along. And with the prominent personalities involved, that was bound to lead to big clashes. This isn't a group built for consensus.

Looking from the outside in, there's only one apparent leader: Nicte. The founder of The Spree has been a fugitive hiding in plain sight for decades.

But Army brat Abigail has been bred to hate The Spree her entire life. Plus, as the unit leader that bears her name,...

Eliot Laurence can't help but wonder what might have been.

With Motherland: Fort Salem barely into its third and final season on Freeform, Laurence feels like he's just scratching the surface.

After all, Motherland had its start as a five-book series by Laurence. When publishers didn't bite, he went in a different direction with his concept.

"We've kind of poached some of those ideas and used them in the first two seasons," Laurence explained in a recent virtual media roundtable. "But there's a lot more that I figured out about the world, and it could keep going, for sure."

In fact, Laurence is negotiating to produce more stories from Motherland in a graphic-novel format. Are we going to get such a book set in the Motherland world?

"The provocative questions keep emerging from it," he said. "There's a lot more stories to tell. I'd like to kind of go through...

A supernatural drama, the Motherland: Fort Salem TV show stars Taylor Hickson, Jessica Sutton, Ashley Nicole Williams, Amalia Holm, Demetria McKinney and Lyne Renee. The series is set in an alternate version of present-day America. In this reality, witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the United States government to fight for their country. The story follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into terrifying and thrilling early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped with women on the front lines, the fight looming and terrorist threats that are strikingly familiar to our world, but with supernatural tactics and weapons.

Freeform is bringing another popular series to an end, but this one is getting a final season.

The cabler on Monday picked up Motherland: Fort Salem Season 3, but with the caveat that it would be the final season of the witchy military drama.

“We’re excited to bring Motherland: Fort Salem back for a third season,” Freeform president Tara Duncan said.

“I am grateful to Eliot and the entire Motherland team. They have created a truly immersive mythology that has resonated with fans since day one, and I know this last chapter will continue to deliver.”

News of the end date announcement comes less than a week after the cancellation of Everything's Gonna Be Okay, which got the boot after two seasons.

The Bold Type wrapped earlier this year with a pre-planned final season.

Comic-Con @ Home 2021: Your Guide to the TV Panels That Will Be Streaming
Image
This summer’s San Diego Comic-Con once again invites fans to sit on their couches and enjoy the pop culture extravaganza from the safety of their homes. There is one difference from last year’s virtual event, however: It will be an abbreviated one, taking place over three days, from Friday, July 23 through Sunday, July 25 — but there are still a bevy of TV show panels on the lineup, which will be streaming for free via YouTube.

Note: Yes, there will again be a DC Fandome virtual event this year (on Oct. 16), where in 2020 shows such as The Flash, Titans, Batwoman...

San Diego Comic-Con@Home’s Heavy On TV, Slim On Film Schedule: ‘Snake Eyes’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Army Of Thieves’, ‘Stargate Atlantis’ Reunion & Jean-Claude Van Damme
Image
Nothing beats a live Comic-Con with the scream of the audience, the thunder of Hall H, and the social media wattage that shines out of San Diego.

I’ll never forget the first time that Marvel walked the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy from the Hilton over to the Convention Center. The fans went so crazy, you’d think some of The Beatles came back and there was an immediate reunion. Instead, no thanks to the impact of Covid-19, we have the second year of a virtual San Diego Comic-Con.

Paramount’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Origins is the only major theatrical studio offering, although there are Netflix panels for their movies Army of Thieves, the Jean-Claude Van Damme feature The Last Mercenary, and also the indie documentary For Madmen Only: The Stories of Del Close, about the Chicago comedy improv guru.

As Deadline first told you, the Disney...

(Warning: This post contains some minor spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of “Motherland: Form Salem.”)

“Motherland: Fort Salem” returns on Tuesday, and the show that captured imaginations with an all-female witch army continues to see its heroines confront all kinds of monsters in Season 2.

Right off the top, the second season raises a question a lot of fans had at the end of Season 1: Will Tally Craven (Jessica Sutton) stay trapped as an old lady forever? And can she go to War College and become a true witch soldier if she’s physically decades older than her friends in the Bellweather Company?

Don’t worry, old Tally doesn’t stick around forever. But before we get to that, allow us to give you a quick refresher of the Freeform show’s action-packed Season 1 finale.

Motherland: Fort Salem Season 2 Finds New Powers, New Relationships, Old Enemies
Image
Motherland: Fort Salem season 1 introduced viewers to an expansive world where witches make up the American military, and followed new recruits Tally (Jessica Sutton), Abigail (Ashley Nicole Williams), and Raelle (Taylor Hickson) as they trained to fight against witchy terrorist cell, The Spree. The witch cadets experienced love, loss, and betrayal while learning to harness their power, and found themselves facing enemies more harrowing than they ever could have imagined.

Everything changed in the explosive season 1 finale. The Spree attacked a stadium during a soccer game to warn the world of witches of impending threat, by hypnotizing the entire crowd to chant “Our ancient enemy has returned,” temporarily ceasing hostilities to get the message out. The Fort Salem witches then came face to face with the witch-hating Camarilla, in an all-out battle that cost the lives of several witches. Tally became a “Biddy” in order to save General Alder, while...

Witch, Please! Of Course There's a Second Season of Motherland: Fort Salem
Image
At ease, soldiers! Motherland: Fort Salem will report for duty with all-new episodes in 2021. Freeform announced via YouTube in May that its supernatural hit was renewed for a sophomore season.

The delightfully dark series explores an alternate reality where the women prosecuted during the Salem Witch Trials between 1692 and 1693 form an alliance with the government and take on a crucial role in the US Army. Flash forward to present day, where these women are celebrated as patriots who routinely risk their lives to keep citizens safe from an organization of terrorist witches known as the Spree. Season one follows a group of young cadets through basic training at Fort Salem, including Raelle (Taylor Hickson), Abigail (Ashley Nicole Williams) and Tally (Jessica Sutton). Think of it as Harry Potter meets Full Metal Jacket.

The cadets sharpen their collective powers - and occasionally spar with each other - as they seek admission to the prestigious War College.

Netflix Added Some Great Horror Movies Today To Kick Off The Month
Image
Netflix added an enormous haul of movies on this first day of September, catering for all tastes. There’s musicals, sci-fi flicks, family films and much more. And if you’re in the mood for something a bit more frightening, Netflix has got you covered, too. The streaming giant added four horror pics from across the decades this Tuesday to kick off the month before Halloween with some scares. Let’s go through them alphabetically.

First of all, we have 1997’s Anaconda, the cult classic creature feature starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube and Jon Voight. It follows a documentary film crew in the Amazon rainforest who encounter an embittered snake hunter and get caught up in his quest to kill a gigantic anaconda. It spawned a bunch of sequels, the last of which was 2015’s crossover Lake Placid Vs. Anaconda, and a reboot was announced to be on the way in January,...
