On-Air Film Review: ‘She Came to Me’ is Refined Intervention
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on October 5th, 2023, reviewing “She Came to Me” a film about the power of love and New York City tugboats. In theaters on October 6th.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Peter Dinklage is Steven, a composer of operas who is stuck in a creative block. Patricia (Anne Hathaway) is his anal retentive psychologist wife, and she suggests fresh air as a way to unlock the block. So while Steven is walking the dog he meets Katrina (Marisa Tomei), a tug boat captain who is “addicted to romance.” Their brief encounter inspires the opera, but also sets in motion a series of events that includes Steven’s stepson Julian (Evan Ellison), his girlfriend Tereza (Harlow Jane), and Tereza’s parents (Brian d’Arcy and Joanna Kulig) … all who have problems of their own.

”She Came to Me” opens in theaters on October 6th.

How Anne Hathaway Delivered a Full Nervous Breakdown in ‘She Came to Me’
Image
Anne Hathaway, similar to her character Patricia in Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me,” has dealt with being a perfectionist.

“I think perhaps in the earlier part of my life, I believed a little bit more in perfectionism,” Hathaway told Variety at the New York screening of “She Came to Me” on Tuesday night. “[Patricia] thinks that if she can just do everything right, she’ll protect the people who she loves from having bad things happen to them.”

Set in New York, the rom-com follows composer Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage), who is creatively blocked just weeks before the deadline for his latest commission. At the urging of his wife and former therapist Patricia (Hathaway), he searches for inspiration and finds it in Katrina (Marisa Tomei), a thrill-seeking tugboat captain.

Hathaway and director-writer Miller discussed bringing nuance to Patricia, a seemingly put-together, type A wife and mother on the verge of mental collapse.

Peter Dinklage & Anne Hathaway's Marriage Has Lost Its Spark In She Came To Me [Exclusive Clip]
Image
An exclusive clip from She Came To Me shows composer Steven Lauddem proposing a "sex night" to his wife, only to be shot down and left alone in bed. The movie explores the dangers of becoming obsessed with romance through Marisa Tomei's character, while Hathaway and Dinklage portray the challenges of maintaining romance in a marriage. She Came To Me combines romantic comedy with an absurdist style of comedy, as showcased in the clip, providing a unique take on the genre.

Patricia Arquette Slams AI At SAG-AFTRA & Actra TIFF Picket: “All We’re Going To Have Is Giant, Mega Marvel Movies”
Image
SAG-AFTRA’s presence at TIFF continued into Saturday with a special picket outside Amazon offices here in Toronto with Canada’s commercial actors union Actra, who’ve been in a 501 day contract lockout with the country’s advertising agencies org.

Patricia Arquette, whose feature directorial debut Gonzo Girl, played on Friday night at the fest, showed up to show her support alongside SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, who praised the Oscar winner for having a project under a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.

Arquette described the current standoff between actors and studios:

“What we got is a low-functioning dynamic, which is ‘I’m gonna get mine, and I don’t care what happens to you’ and have to shift to a high functioning dynamic which is ‘This is what I’d like, but I don’t want it, if it really hurts you.'”

“And this is really hurting people,...

Rebecca Miller’s ‘She Came to Me,’ With Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei, Moves Release Date to October (Exclusive)
Image
Vertical is shifting the theatrical release of Rebecca Miller’s romantic comedy “She Came to Me” by a week. The film, which stars Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei, will open on Oct. 6 instead of Sept. 29, when it was originally slated to premiere. Vertical opted to change its release strategy after Apple decided to move the opening of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” to later in the month. “She Came to Me” was granted an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, which means that the cast will be able to do promotional activity around its release despite the fact that actors are on strike against major studios and streamers.

“In light of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ release date shift, we jumped at the opportunity for the Oct. 6 date for ‘She Came to Me,'” Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey commented. “It is a competitively less crowded weekend which...

Peter Dinklage and Marisa Tomei Hook Up on a Tugboat in Trailer for She Came to Me: Watch
Image
In the upcoming absurdist comedy She Came to Me, Peter Dinklage plays an opera composer named Steven Lauddem who’s stricken with a serious case of writer’s block. After being encouraged by his wife (Anne Hathaway) to find inspiration in a stranger, Dinklage’s character gets involved in a tryst with a tugboat captain (Marisa Tomei), and all hell breaks loose. Watch the trailer below.

As it turns out, meeting Tomei’s Katrina was exactly what Dinklage needed, and he proceeds to create a hit opera about a “demented tugboat captain who lures men to her tugboat,” as one patron puts it. Of course, Tomei’s character is delighted to find out she was his muse, and won’t leave Dinklage alone despite his protestations.

“My imagination came up with the story,” he says. “My talent wrote the music. I mean, you don’t kill men and eat them,...

Peter Dinklage & Anne Hathaway in 'She Came to Me' Comedy Trailer
Image
"You don't kill men and eat them, do you?" "Well, I haven't yet..." Vertical has revealed an official trailer for the indie dark comedy called She Came to Me, the latest work made by filmmaker Rebecca Miller. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year to mostly negative reviews. It's now set for release at the end of September in theaters. A composer with an unfinished opera, a spiritually conflicted psychiatrist, and a free-spirited tugboat captain collide on an unpredictable voyage into uncharted waters – in writer-director Rebecca Miller’s "enchanting romantic comedy." It's a strange ensemble comedy with wacky things happening, about romance and infidelity and shame and confidence and almost too much for one movie to handle. Peter Dinklage stars as the composer Steven, with Anne Hathaway, Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig, Brian d'Arcy James, Harlow Jane, and Evan A. Ellison. This is, unfortunately, one of my least...

Patricia Arquette and Director Jay Roach on ‘High Desert,’ the Writers Strike and Making an Underground Comedy
Image
In the new Apple TV+ comedy noir series “High Desert,” Patricia Arquette and Matt Dillon play an off-and-on again couple so naturally that it seems like they must have starred together in some iconic 1990s indie movie. Surprisingly, they haven’t, but the off-kilter, sun-baked menace of films like Arquette starrers “True Romance” and “Lost Highway” permeates the new series, which is peopled with what Arquette calls “wild and weird creatures” in an environment that alternates between arid beauty and strip mall desolation.

In “High Desert,” Arquette’s methadone-dependent, perennial wild child Peggy Newman could not be more different than her buttoned-up “Severance” character Harmony Cobel, whether she’s piloting a dune buggy around the desert, swinging from a chandelier in a Pioneertown Old West show or getting mixed up with another half-baked scam. Peggy, who recently lost her mother, needs to raise money to stay in their house. She...

Rebecca Miller’s Berlinale Rom-Com ‘She Came To Me’ Starring Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway & Marisa Tomei Acquired By Vertical
Image
Exclusive: Vertical has nabbed U.S. rights to the romantic comedy She Came to Me, starring Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway (Ocean’s 8) and Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (Spider-Man: No Way Home), with plans to release the film in theaters nationwide on a date that has yet to be determined.

Written and directed by award-winner Rebecca Miller (Maggie’s Plan), She Came to Me world premiered earlier this year as the opening night film of the Berlin Film Festival. The comedy about love in all its forms, set in the bustling metropolis of New York City, follows Steven Lauddem (Dinklage), a composer who is plagued by a creative block which leaves him unable to finish the score for his big comeback opera. She Came to Me review – Peter Dinklage leads sparklingly convoluted romantic comedy
Marisa Tomei
Dinklage plays a composer who writes an opera about his affair with tugboat captain Marisa Tomei, in a comedy from Rebecca Miller that has something of Normal People

Author and film-maker Rebecca Miller isn’t known for humour exactly, but she brings a sprightly sort of sweetness and preposterous innocence to this quirky-naive romantic comedy that she has written and directed, something with wit and fun but also ultimately an almost childlike seriousness - like a Woody Allen movie or a screwball but played at two-thirds of the speed and with fewer cynical wisecracks.

The excellent cast brings a prosecco sparkle. Peter Dinklage is Steven Lauddem, a celebrated opera composer, difficult, demanding and now creatively blocked, married to fashionable New York therapist Patricia (Anne Hathaway), a gorgeous fashion plate with a love of neatness and an obsession with nuns. Steven is stepfather to her teen son Julian (Evan Ellison) who...

Berlin Review: Rebecca Miller’s ‘She Came To Me’ With Anne Hathaway, Peter Dinklage & Marisa Tomei
Image
You would need a heart of stone to leave Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me without wanting to pick up sticks and live on a tugboat, preferably one steered by Marisa Tomei.

Tomei’s tugboat captain Katrina, with her softly weathered face, earthy humor and somewhat sociopathic “love” addiction, is a simply fabulous romcom heroine, if She Came to Me can be described as a romcom. And in Peter Dinklage, at his most darkly glowering as the perpetually panic-stricken, creatively blocked composer Katrina targets with her romantic zeal, she has her perfect foil. Props to Berlin Film Festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian for nailing She Came to Me: light but pungent, it is a perfect opener.

Not that this is a two-horse show: in the screwball tradition, there is much more going on here than a middle-aged meet-cute. At the outset, Miller swings between the rarefied opulence of...

‘She Came to Me’ Review: Peter Dinklage and Marisa Tomei Find Love and Madness on a Tugboat
Image
Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. Vertical releases the film in theaters on Friday, October 6.

Rebecca Miller makes romances. And comedies. And dramas. With character studies still beholden to crazy plots, she’s covered everything from drug addiction to infidelity, incest to ambition. A Rebecca Miller film means releasing expectations, eschewing glossy images and tidy plots, and embracing the mess inherent in life itself. Her films are wild, dreamy, sad, funny — and not at all realistic.

That’s certainly the case with “She Came to Me,” which follows a loosely connected group of people all made absolutely crazy by love. Miller delights in toying with what sounds like a cutesy concept, stretching it to wacky (and occasionally wonderful) ends. It may be most closely aligned with her previous film, the 2015 “Maggie’s Plan” (it also poked at the idea of modern romance), but it...

Marisa Tomei, Anne Hathaway, and Peter Dinklage in She Came to Me (2023)
Berlinale Review: Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me is a Loopy, Painfully Laugh-Free Screwball Black Comedy
Marisa Tomei, Anne Hathaway, and Peter Dinklage in She Came to Me (2023)
She Came to Me has designs on being a grand opera, but it’s definitely more of what the British call a panto. Opening at a swanky cocktail reception as a male tenor offhandedly begins singing the famous “Habanera” from Carmen, we’re introduced to the sketchily imaged beau monde existence of one Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage), blocked opera composer extraordinaire. He’s toasting his first commission following a breakdown, through which he met and then wed his psychiatrist Patricia (Anne Hathaway), but artistic inspiration again eludes him. They enjoy a cosseted, Brooklyn townhouse-inhabiting existence, familiar from Woody Allen and earlier Noah Baumbach pictures––a hint at the weirdly dated manner of this film where lead characters are immune from the expected satire, humbling, or cross-examination, and instead indulged for unfunny farce.

Its writer-director is Rebecca Miller, who in the aftermath of New York Magazine’s infamous “nepo baby” mock-exposé,...

‘She Came to Me’ Review: Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei Collide in a Romance With More Strain Than Spark
Image
The light touch that made Rebecca Miller’s last film, Maggie’s Plan, so enjoyable is nowhere to be found in She Came to Me, a clunky multistrand romance with such a terminal case of whimsy that almost none of its characters or their relationships ring true. Get this: Peter Dinklage plays a creatively stalled avant-garde opera composer; Anne Hathaway is a controlling therapist who randomly ditches her chic wardrobe for a nun’s habit; Marisa Tomei is a tugboat captain prone to romantic obsessions; and Brian d’Arcy James is a court stenographer heavily into Civil War reenactments.

If you’re wondering how much quirk one movie can take, you’re not alone, raising the question of how it ever got cast, let alone made. Yet somehow, it did, even landing a tinkly score by Bryce Dessner of The National and an original Bruce Springsteen song for the end credits, appropriately titled “Addicted to Romance.

Marisa Tomei, Anne Hathaway, and Peter Dinklage in She Came to Me (2023)
‘She Came to Me’ Review: Anne Hathaway Shines in Well-Intentioned but Bland Relationship Drama
Marisa Tomei, Anne Hathaway, and Peter Dinklage in She Came to Me (2023)
The consistently disjointed ensemble dramedy “She Came to Me” never settles on a sensible tone to match its anxious, but well-meaning characters, most of whom are neither so ridiculous nor so tragic to be either laugh aloud funny or convincingly dramatic.

Writer/director Rebecca Miller (“Maggie’s Plan”) celebrates her protagonists’ variable qualities with mixed results in this comedy of cringe-y errors, which follows two teenagers who get caught up in their high-strung parents’ romantic crises. The movie’s older cast members, led by Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway, and Marisa Tomei, add some value to Miller’s lifeless scenario, which trails after Dinklage’s creatively blocked opera composer, his muse, and his elusive psychiatrist wife, played with typical poise by Hathaway.

Miller struggles to capture some qualities that Dinklage, as panic attack-prone composer Steven, uses to describe the anti-heroic lead of his new opera. Steven takes inspiration from Katrina (Tomei), a sardonic,...

Dig Review
Image
Plot: A homicidal couple holds a home salvager and his deaf teenage daughter hostage, forcing them to dig up something they buried beneath a patio.

Review: Thomas Jane once played the Marvel Comics character The Punisher, but in the opening scenes of director K. Asher Levin’s thriller Dig his character Scott Brennan is more reminiscent of Thor, making a spectacle of himself by threatening people with a hammer. He first wields the hammer when he wades into a party to retrieve his teenage daughter Jane. Then when he sees that someone who cut him off on the road is at the next pump over at a gas station, he grabs his hammer again. This is when Brennan learns the folly of bringing a hammer to a gunfight, as his tough guy act at the gas station results in his wife being shot dead and his daughter being deafened by the sound of the shot.

Thomas Jane and Emile Hirsch in Dig (2022)
"Now that everybody's wide awake, we dig!" Saban Films has unveiled the trailer for an indie thriller titled Dig, from filmmaker K. Asher Levin who usually works as a producer in TV. Not to be confused with the other Netflix film called The Dig, this is a whole different story. A widowed father and his daughter whose house is up for demolition, are taken hostage by a dangerous couple, who won't stop until they retrieve what lies beneath the property. The father and daughter must work together to outsmart their captors and escape. Starring Thomas Jane, Emile Hirsch, Liana Liberato, Harlow Jane, and Makana David. The film "promises to be heart-stopping and action-packed, and is sure to showcase some great fight sequences from the" small cast. Doesn't look that bad, surprisingly, but it doesn't look that good either. Take a look below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for K.

The pic, which follows the shakeup of the worldwide annual fitness competition The CrossFit Games in the midst of the pandemic, will debut on iTunes and Apple TV on July 20, followed by digital platforms and VOD on August 3.

“The collaboration among the Buttery Bros., CrossFit HQ, and Gravitas has been smooth and it’s great to get the band back together,” said Michael Murphy, President of Gravitas Ventures. “Previous CrossFit films are immediate best-sellers, and we expect the same from Resurgence which is awesome in scope, story-telling, and quality.”
