We Asked Ron DeSantis’ Ex-Rivals For Their Debate Advice
Image
After months of damaging news stories (personal and professional), dwindling poll numbers, and rising doubts from restive donors, Ron DeSantis’ big moment has finally arrived. The first Republican debate is here and, with it, a chance for the Florida governor to reclaim his vaunted status as DeFuture of DeParty.

There’s just one problem: debates have not, historically, been a very forgiving format for DeSantis.

For one thing, he just doesn’t come across as very likable. (An adviser who helped the former congressman prepare for a 2018 debate against Andrew Gillum...

Denée Benton Compares Ron DeSantis to KKK ‘Grand Wizard’ at Tony Awards
Image
The 2023 Tony Awards were able to continue to air as planned this year on the condition that it be unscripted so as not to cross the Writers Guild of American picket lines. This resulted in a show that stumbled through a few hiccups but bolstered some savage moments — like when actress Denée Benton likened current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to a ‘Grand Wizard,’ the title given to white supremacist leaders within the Ku Klux Klan.

“And while I am certain that the current Grand Wizard — I’m sorry, excuse me,...

DeSantis’ Debate Prep Strategy: Don’t ‘Piss Off’ Trump Voters, 2018 Videos Reveal
Image
When he was running for governor of Florida in 2018, Ron DeSantis’ debate strategy was clear: don’t “piss off” Trump’s base. Video of the now-governor’s debate prep sessions reveals he was struggling to “find a way” to disagree with Trump “in a way that’s not going to piss off all his voters.”

The previously unreleased footage, obtained exclusively by ABC News and published Sunday, offers a peek into DeSantis’ thinking as he prepared to debate Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum. The recordings may also offer insight into DeSantis...

From a Super Bowl boycott to Johnny Depp: What are Rihanna’s politics?
Image
According to the government of Barbados, the proper way to address Rihanna is “the Right Excellent Robyn Rihanna Fenty, National Hero”.

It is an appropriate formality for the pop icon and beauty magnate often lauded by her fans as a “queen”, who was granted lifelong honours by her Caribbean homeland on the first day of its official divorce from the British monarchy in 2021.

Yet such sobriquets also imply a degree of political influence. In a career spanning nearly two decades and at least five industries, Rihanna has not shied from wielding hers.

In interviews and on social media, the 34-year-old has spoken out about gun control, Barbadian independence, violence against Asian Americans, Donald Trump, police brutality in Nigeria and more, at the same time donating millions to charity and using using her make-up company Fenty to transform the beauty industry's approach to skin colour.

This February, she will end her...

Donald Trump Lashes Out After Rupert Murdoch-Owned Media Outlets Pin Blame On Him For Midterm Mess, Claims They Are “All In” For Ron DeSantis — Update
Image
Update, 3:10 Pm: Donald Trump groused that the “no longer great” New York Post and The Wall Street Journal are “all in” for Ron DeSantis, his potential rival for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.

Trump also bashed DeSantis, labeling him as “Ron DeSanctimonious” and as an “average Republican Governor with great Public Relations.”

“Ron came to me in desperate shape in 2017—he was politically dead, losing in a landslide to a very good Agriculture Commissioner, Adam Putnam, who was loaded up with cash and great poll numbers,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Ron had low approval, bad polls, and no money, but he said that if I would Endorse him, he could win. I didn’t know Adam so I said, “Let’s give it a shot, Ron.” When I Endorsed it was as though, to use a bad term, a nuclear weapon went off.”

He took further credit for...

Former Florida Governor Candidate Andrew Gillum Charged With Campaign Fraud
Image
Andrew Gillum, the Florida Democrat who narrowly lost the 2018 gubernatorial election to Ron DeSantis, has been charged with 21 counts of conspiracy, wire fraud, and making false statements, the Justice Department announced on Wednesday.

The indictment names Gillum and Sharon Lettman-Hicks, one of his top advisers on his gubrernatorial campaign. “The Indictment alleges that between 2016 and 2019, defendants Gillum and Lettman-Hicks conspired to commit wire fraud, by unlawfully soliciting and obtaining funds from various entities and individuals through false and fraudulent promises and representations that the funds would be used for a legitimate purpose,...

‘Tamron Hall’ Renewed For Season 3 By Walt Disney Television
Image
Walt Disney Television has renewed the nationally syndicated daytime talk show Tamron Hall for a third season. Hall is expected to announce the pickup at her show this morning.

Getting to a third season is a major milestone very few syndicated daily talk shows have been able to achieve over the past decade. While many high-profile daytime talkers launch with two-year station group deals, which gives them two years on the air, going beyond that has proven a daunting task. The last show to accomplish it was Steve Harvey six years ago.

Walt Disney TV already has cleared Tamron Hall for its third season (2021-22) on ABC Owned Television Stations Group. The ABC O&Os have been the show’s core station group, which helped launch it last fall. That includes Wabc-tv New York, Kabc-tv Los Angeles, Wpvi-tv Philadelphia, Kgo-tv San Francisco, Ktrk-tv Houston, Wtvd-tv Raleigh-Durham, and Kfsn-tv Fresno.

Ratings: Virtual Acm Awards on CBS Hit All-Time Lows in Key Demo and Viewers
Keith Urban at an event for American Idol (2002)
CBS’ 55th annual Academy of Country Music Awards hit all-time lows in both TV ratings and total viewers on Wednesday, the first (and hopefully last) time the ACMs went virtual. However, CBS still managed an easy primetime win against its broadcast competition. Hosted by Keith Urban, last night’s Acm Awards drew a 1.0 rating in the key adults 18-49 demographic, down from the previous low of 1.6 that 2019’s show — which aired on a Sunday — put up. Also Read: 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards: The Complete Winners List In terms of total viewers, the show scored 6.589 million viewers, the smallest audience the show has seen since its former record low of 9.275 million in 2007, when the show aired on a Tuesday for the third year in a row. CBS was first in ratings with a 1.0 rating/7 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 6.6 million, according to preliminary numbers.

Drew Barrymore at an event for Everybody's Fine (2009)
Drew Barrymore’s Daytime Debut Does Fine in Ratings, But Falls Behind Tamron Hall’s Andrew Gillum Interview
Drew Barrymore at an event for Everybody's Fine (2009)
Drew Barrymore was always going to hard pressed to follow last year’s strong daytime debuts by Kelly Clarkson and Tamron Hall, but the actress still got off a strong enough start.

The CBS-produced “The Drew Barrymore Show” premiered to a 1.0 household rating/3 share in the 44 metered markets, according to Nielsen’s overnight data. For her first episode, Barrymore welcomed her former “Charlie’s Angels” co-stars Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz and “50 First Dates” co-star Adam Sandler.

Barrymore’s premiere fell below the season two debut of the Disney-ABC produced-“Tamron Hall,” which welcomed disgraced former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum. Hall’s second season got off to a 1.1/4 start.

Even so, Barrymore’s start was a ratings boon for CBS stations, where her show led the 9 a.m. Et time slot in New York. “Drew” grew by double digits from both its lead-ins and prior Monday time...

Andrew Gillum
The 2018 Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was present in a hotel room where one man was treated for a suspected overdose and baggies of suspected crystal meth were found, according to the Miami Herald, which cites a police report.

Gillum, a CNN contributor, “was too intoxicated to answer questions,” according to the Herald, but was able to leave the South Beach hotel room with no incident. He has not been charged with anything.

In a statement given to the Herald, Gillum said, “I was in Miami last night for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends. While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines. I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement.”

Donald Trump
Enter Mike Bloomberg, Exit Black Voters
Donald Trump
Donald Trump marched out his same cast of sycophants last week to make the case that black voters — particularly the men — have a friend in the president with the white-nationalist policies. It’s a tired routine, but it remains fascinating that Trump and his party expend so much energy not merely insulting the intelligence of black voters but also by blocking their access to the ballot. Through their fear and sinister behavior, it appears Republicans understand the value of black and Hispanic electorates better than do the Democrats.

This time,...

Westfield Century City Mall Stores Remain Closed After Fears of Suspicious Package, Possible Gunman
The Westfield Century City Mall was cleared by police to be “open for business” Friday night following a lockdown for several hours as police investigated reports of a possible gunman and a suspicious package.

Most stores remained closed into early Friday evening and the mall didn’t initially allow patrons to return. But some businesses began to reopen, including the mall’s AMC theater, which reopened to approximate 100 customers, an AMC employee told TheWrap.

The package was determined to be a smoking and smoldering box of florescent lightbulbs, according to Robert Marino, assistant commanding 0fficer of Lapd’s West Bureau. No injuries were reported, and police found no evidence of a gunman. Marino said police were looking for a “person of interest possibly connected” to the incident.

The first report of a possible gunman came around 12:42 p.m. During their search, officers were directed to “a suspicious package located inside the Amazon store,...

Trey Gowdy Joins Fox News Channel As Rush To Land Ex-Pols Continues
No wonder so many U.S. politicians have announced their retirement recently — their new jobs might be more secure. Amid a hiring spree of ex-congressmen, governors and such among news outlets, Fox News Channel has joined the fun and signed Gop Rep. Trey Gowdy as a contributor.

The former Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and member of the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees will offer political and legal analysis Fnc and Fox Business Network’s daytime and primetime programming.

Among his appointments during Gowdy’s eight years representing South Carolina’s 4th District, he chaired the House Select Committee on the Benghazi attack and played a key role in Congress’ probe into then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s role in the 2012 terrorist attack that killed four Americans in Libya. He also got plenty of screen time — including many shouted mild expletives — during last year’s Supreme Court...

It’s Not Just Steve King
Public servants are supposed to serve every one of their constituents faithfully. Iowa’s 4th Congressional District is nearly monochromatic, but there are some voters of color living there. They should have a representative in Congress who isn’t a white supremacist. Frankly, so should the white residents.

It is hardly radical to suggest that exhibitions of bigotry — such as those of Rep. Steve King, of that 4th District in Iowa — should be a firable offense throughout all levels of government. It is high atop President Trump’s own list of impeachable offenses.

Adam McKay
At The Box Office, All The Politics In Hollywood Matches One Good Horror Flick
Adam McKay
Here’s a sobering thought as we turn toward the Golden Globes, wherein Adam McKay’s Vice is the most-nominated film: All of last year’s political movies combined have sold about as many tickets as one upper-middle horror hit.

In a year of partisan intensity, the top performer among movies with overt political themes was Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. A Globes nominee for best drama, that one had taken in about $48.3 million at the domestic box office as of midweek to rank a bit above No. 60 in the combined tally on Boxofficemojo.com.

Stacked somewhere underneath were Vice, Chappaquiddick, Rbg, Fahrenheit 11/9, Death of a Nation, Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer, The Front Runner and On the Basis of Sex. Add those to Lee’s film, and the total comes to roughly $117 million — a little less than Warner and its New Line unit took in with The Nun,...

Barack Obama endorsed more than 250 candidates during the 2018 midterm elections, including 11 in the state of Texas. Beto O’Rourke was not one of them. “I don’t think we’re interested,” O’Rourke said when asked back in October about being left off the ex-president’s list.

O’Rourke was, at the time, in the midst of making an equal-opportunity pitch to Republicans, Independents and Democrats, and it’s possible that he made a calculation that Willie Nelson’s endorsement would be a lot more valuable in convincing the conservative...

Andrew Gillum Ends Florida Governor Bid, Concedes On Facebook Live
Democrat Andrew Gillum posted a live video on Facebook Saturday afternoon in which he congratulated Republican Ron DeSantis for winning the Florida governorship and vowed to remain active.

Gillum initially conceded to DeSantis on election night, but retracted that when it appeared that a recount was in order in the tight race. The recount by machine showed DeSantis leading Gillum by more than 30,000 votes, an insurmountable lead.

Gillum, who received heavy celebrity support in his campaign, remains as Tallahassee mayor, and noted, “the fight for Florida continues,” but did not specify his next moves. His second concession speech was conciliatory, unlike that of fellow Democrat and Georgia governor candidate Stacey Abrams, who ended her campaign on Friday with a blistering diatribe claiming voter suppression as a possible reason for her loss in that election.

President Donald Trump earlier saluted Gillum on Twitter, saying he will be a “strong Democrat warrior...

Trumpism Is Racism, So Things Will Get Worse
November 6th was a bad night for President Trump, no matter what he says. He now has to deal with a newly empowered opposition party with a mandate to check his myriad abuses and scandals. The rebuke wasn’t as harsh as it needed to be, though.

Trumpism, which is essentially short for “espousing racism,” continued to score well with the president’s base. Paired with the flaws in our democracy that help maintain white political power, it diluted a Democratic victory that should have been more absolute. Trumpism likely...

Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards: Michael Moore Finishes His 2003 Oscar Speech
Days after the White House press secretary shared doctored footage to justify restricting a journalist’s access, the annual Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards took on a more charged tenor than usual.

“Remember truth? That little thing that’s the foundation of civilization?” Robert De Niro asked wistfully, drawing laughs from the audience who’d gathered at the Bric in Brooklyn on Saturday for the gala.

“We live in a time of fiction and lies, so that makes this all the more important. People who make documentary films — it’s a critical job that needs to be done,” Michael Moore, whom De Niro presented with the Critics’ Choice Lifetime Achievement Award, told Variety ahead of the event. “I think we all have to be focused on removing what’s going on in Washington DC and fixing the country right now. Florida Recount Begins in Governor and Senate Races
In what seems like a cruel flashback to the 2000 presidential election, a recount in the Florida senate and governors races is happening. Florida’s secretary of state officially ordered the recount on Saturday afternoon.

As of the most recent tallies, Republican Governor Rick Scott’s lead over Democratic Senator Bill Nelson narrowed to 12,562 votes, just 0.15 percent. Republican Ron DeSantis’s lead over Democratic challenger Andrew Gillum shrunk to 33,684 votes, or 0.41 percent.

The battle had already begun as attorneys from both sides argued over ballots and voter eligibility in Broward and Palm Beach counties this week.

Florida Will Start Recounting Three Key Election Races – Arizona, Georgia Still Pondering Actions
Florida has decided to move forward on a recount of its tight races for governor, senator and agriculture commissioner. Meanwhile, Arizona and Georgia are also contemplating recounts for their extremely tight gubernatorial and senate races.

The stakes are high for each state, as a final determination will decide whether the Republicans have a comfortable edge in the Senate, or a narrow majority. Democrat governors in the affected states would also have an outsize influence on the presidential race in 2020. The Florida and Georgia elections in particular drew heavy celebrity interest and fundraising.

The Florida secretary of state announced the recount today. The unofficial results have Republican Gov. Rick Scott leading incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson by more than 12,500 votes, or about .15%.

Elections 2018: How the Midterm Results Could Impact Film and TV Production
Chris Christie
When Phil Murphy replaced Chris Christie as New Jersey Governor last January, the New Jersey film world did a complete 180. Christie, who infamously did battle with MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” killed the state’s film and TV tax incentive program and with it production in the Garden State. By July, Murphy had signed into law a robust $75 million a year incentive program that instantly put the state in direct competition with the overcrowded New York City production world. In just four months, it brought major Hollywood projects back across the Hudson River.

For producers and distributors’ bottom line, which is now being subsidized to the tune of well over a billion dollars a year by state tax incentive programs, elections matter. Over the last 10-15 years, virtually every state has dipped its toe in the enticing waters of luring stars and moviemaking by doling out millions to major studios, but...

The Florida Governor’s Race Is Probably Headed for a Recount
Washington — The Florida gubernatorial race isn’t over yet. On Thursday afternoon, Democrat Andrew Gillum, who conceded defeat on Tuesday night, narrowed the margin between his vote tally and that ofRepublican Ron DeSantis. As of this writing, the discrepancy sits at just over 38,000 votes out of 8.2 million cast, giving Gillum 49.15 percent of the vote to DeSantis’ 49.62 percent, according the state’s elections division.

An automatic machine recount is automatically triggered under Florida law if the margin between two candidates’ share of the vote is with 0.5 percent. If the current vote tally stands or narrows further,...

Bernie Sanders Opens Up About New Democrats in Congress, Taking on Trumpism
Bernie Sanders
Amid all the drama of the 2018 midterms, Vermont’s Bernie Sanders cruised to re-election Tuesday night, securing a third term in the Senate with an easy 66.1 percent of the vote. In a year in which longtime Senate incumbents on both sides of the aisle were either unseated or faced stiff challenges, Sanders continued a tradition dating back to his House days of winning too easily to make headlines. He was barely mentioned during the cable news election-night marathons.

But Sanders was implicitly a major part of the 2018 narrative. He had campaigned hard for several candidates,...

The South’s Progressive Uprising Is Only Just Beginning
Stacey Abrams
Shortly before 2 a.m. Et Wednesday morning, when Stacey Abrams took to the podium in a still-packed Atlanta ballroom, she trailed voter-suppressing Republican Brian Kemp with 99 percent of the returns counted. But Abrams wasn’t about to concede. “Friends, we are still on the verge of victory,” she proclaimed. With thousands of absentee and provisional ballots still untallied, Abrams knew she still had a chance to whittle Kemp’s margin below 50 percent and trigger a runoff election in December. “We’re gonna have a chance to do a do-over,” she told her cheering supporters.

We got the billionaire philanthropist Wednesday in Washington D.C., and he was over the moon about Dems taking control of the House of Representatives. At Andrew Gillum’s Election Night Event, the 2020 Rumors Already Swirled
Tallahassee — At 10:50 p.m. Tuesday night outside Lee Hall on Florida A&M University’s campus, Democrat Andrew Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, stepped to the microphone. Florida’s first-ever black nominee for governor gave a gracious, hopeful concession speech to a devoted group of supporters after it became apparent that Republican former Congressman Ron DeSantis would become Florida’s 46th governor by a narrow margin.

“I believe, in the long run, good always wins out over evil,” Gillum said.

Despite multiple key Democratic wins across the country Tuesday night,...

Donald Trump Midterms Morning-After Tweetstorm: Make Nancy Pelosi House Speaker
President Donald Trump, ever gracious in victory, this morning lobbied for Democrat Rep. Nancy Pelosi to reclaim her title as Speaker of the House. This after Pelosi’s party took back the majority of seats in that body, while Gop deepened its hold on the Senate, in a midterm elections that had everyone declaring victory this morning.

“In all fairness, Nancy Pelosi deserves to be chosen Speaker of the House by Democrats,” Trump tweeted this morning. “If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes. She has earned this great honor!”

Pundits immediately began to mull what Trump has up his sleeve on the Pelosi front. Pelosi is, in fairness, a great talking point for Trump at rallies, though she runs second to journalists.

But that was just one of several Potus Twitter announcements/threats the morning after the midterms.

“If Democrats think they are...

Despite Republicans loosing control of the House of Representatives, Ingraham also used the evening to take shots at other celebrities including Oprah and Will Ferrell, who she lumped among the night’s “biggest losers.”

Trumpism Wins in Florida
Hillary Clinton
Two years ago, Florida was the first state to suggest that things had gone horribly wrong for Hillary Clinton and the Democrats, and that an upset of historic proportions was in the works. On Tuesday, Florida delivered yet another verdict on the state of American politics: Trumpism is alive and well in 2018.

That judgment came in the form of a victory for Ron DeSantis, the Trump-loving Republican candidate for Florida governor. CNN called the race for DeSantis at 11 o’clock Eastern on Tuesday. The ex-gop congressman had a lead of...

Andrew Gillum Concedes To Ron DeSantis In Florida Governor Race
After MSNBC’s slipped up yesterday and accidentally shared a graphic of Democrat Andrew Gillum leading the Gop’s Ron DeSantis by six-tenths of a percentage, the race for Florida Governor has officially ended, proving that the graphic was, in fact, just a test.

Gillum conceded to DeSantis, who led the Democrat by 1% in one of the tightest races during tonight’s midterms. The Florida governor’s race was one of several key battles in the mid-term elections. It was also a test for the presidency of Donald Trump and the state of the Republican party.

“I still plan to be on the front lines right alongside every single one of you when it comes to standing up for what we believe in,” said Gillum in his concession speech.

Gillum, whose campaign drew the attention of the likes of Barack Obama, who campaigned with him in the final days, was...

Democratic ‘Blue Wave’ Washes Over House as Republicans Keep Senate
A Blue Wave has broken Republican control of Congress. With Democrats have secured more than two dozen seats to reclaim the House of Representatives for the first time since 2010. Armed with subpoena power, Democrats are now in position to put a critical check on President Trump, holding him accountable to both the law and the Constitution.

As election returns rolled in, Nancy Pelosi, the once-and-likely-future Speaker of the House, declared Democrats would lead with “transparency” and seek “unity” in Washington, pledging to “find common ground where we can” but to...

Jeffrey Katzenberg Reveals He’s No Nancy Pelosi When It Comes To Midterms
Exclusive: The once and perhaps once again Speaker of the House of Representatives may be “100%” sure the Democrats are taking back the lower chamber of Congress in today’s midterm elections but Jeffrey Katzenberg is playing his cards a bit closer to the chest than Nancy Pelosi, at least for now.

“I’m cautiously optimistic about our chances to win the House,” the Quibi boss and one of Hollywood’s top donors for the Democrats told Deadline.

As the number #1 bundler for Barack Obama over his initial White House run and 2012 re-election campaign, Katzenberg has put his money where his hopes are this political cycle too.

While simultaneously gearing up his Meg Whitman run mobile video start-up, the ex-DreamWorks Animation boss has raised millions for the Democrats in the past several months. Just a few weeks ago, Katzenberg and his political consigliere Andy Spahn hosted a pricey Beverly Hills...

MSNBC Puts Florida Governor Race Vote-Total Graphic Onscreen A Wee Bit Early
It’s the kind of goof that the folks who scream about “fake news” likely will scream about. MSNBC this evening briefly put a graphic onscreen that showed “vote counts” for the Florida gubernatorial race — you know, the one being held tomorrow.

“Quick clarification here,” a rather embarrassed All In host Chris Hayes told viewers. “Just want to say, earlier this hour, uh, we showed a graphic of the Florida gubernatorial race. May have caught your eye because our system had inadvertently populated some test numbers. Obviously, we do not yet have any vote totals here, the night before the election. That was a misfire. Don’t worry. I was pretty confused when I saw it up there, to see it myself.”

And, of course, MSNBC had Democrat Andrew Gillum leading the Gop’s Ron DeSantis by six-tenths of a percentage point with 99% of the ballots counted.

It’s going...
