The new Hulu series “Mid-Century Modern” was pitched as the “gay Golden Girls,” according to creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan.
The 10-episode comedy launches on March 28, and the cast and crew uniformly herald it as a revival of classic sitcoms like Mutchnick and Kohan’s previous hit “Will & Grace” or “Alice,” the long-running show starring the late Linda Lavin, who they recruited for the new series.
However, “Mid-Century Modern,” is a bit racier than its predecessors.
“Because of the people at Hulu, we have been allowed to push the boundary. This is a show that now sounds a little bit more like we all sound,” Mutchnick said during a Q&a with the cast at the series premiere event, held at the DGA Theater in L.A. on Tuesday. “No one has to say ‘boink’ when they want to fuck.”

In an American city known for its pleasant weather and high concentration of retirees, there’s a stylish bungalow. In it live three friends. There’s a sweet dimbulb, a Southern wit and a sardonic protagonist trying to ignore a drumbeat of insecurities even though they’re being broadcast by the protagonist’s mother — who, by the way, also lives there. It can be hard to date with divorce trauma and stretch marks, but that’s no reason not to try, so there are wisecracking conversations about racy underwear, shameful hookups, and PrEP… because I’m not talking about The Golden Girls, I’m talking about Mid-Century Modern. For their latest, Will & Grace co-creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick have stolen from the best, and I couldn’t be happier they did.

Linda Lavin’s final role on television will be in “Mid-Century Modern” this Friday, so her co-stars and the sitcom creators made sure to honor the late star at their Hulu premiere on Tuesday.
“Linda Lavin was the most joyous, gracious, amazing person that you’d ever want to meet. She worked from the age of 5 to 87 and went out blazing like the star she was,” Nathan Lee Graham told TheWrap. “She truly was a pro at everything. This woman did everything: she could play the piano; she could sing; she could act, comedy, drama equally as well. She was a light. I call her the spiritual showrunner of our show. She’s the glue, she keeps us going. She’s the puppetmaster, she’s doing all of this tonight. So, she’s here.”
The Tony Award winner and Emmy-nominated actress died in December at age 87 from complications of lung cancer before Season 1 had wrapped.

The new streaming platform Vaba TV, which launches in January, has acquired the murder mystery series “Fatal Game,” an eight-episode drama starring German actor Til Schweiger (“Inglourious Basterds”). The project, from Usatv Productions, also stars French-Brazilian actor Renan Pacheco (“Désordres”) and Chase Mattson.
“Fatal Game,” from writers Sara Sarkissian and Anush Petrosyan, centers on a group of ten friends who travel to a remote island for an engagement party. When someone is murdered amid the celebration, what was an innocent game suddenly has deadly consequences. With 72 hours until the next boat arrives and another victim every five hours, the group must identify the assassin before it is too late.
“With its high production value and compelling interactive narrative, this series is set to become a must-watch for fans of mystery, suspense, and thrillers,” Usatv Productions president Bagrat Sargsyan said in a statement.
