But the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus. Who, they quickly find out, is no saint.

Gerard Butler’s Sneaky 79% Rotten Tomatoes Action Hit Has Begun Its Descent on Streaming
Image
Gerard Butler’s hit action movie began streaming on Netflix earlier this month, and after several weeks of unchallenged streaming dominance, the film has officially begun its descent. Butler stars alongside Mike Colter in Plane, the 2023 action thriller following a pilot forced to land his plane in a war zone after being caught in a storm. Plane spent the last few weeks in the top spot not only on Netflix but on global streaming charts for any platform, but the film has now officially exited the top three and is poised to begin its streaming descent. Plane was a huge hit among critics and audiences, earning 79% from the former and a 94% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. It also grossed triple its $25 million budget, finishing its box office run with around $75 million.

Butler has only starred in three films since Plane was released in 2023. He followed it up shortly after with Kandahar,...

David Harbour's Santa will slay again when Violent Night 2 opens next year
Image
Good news comes from Universal with the announcement that David Harbour will be returning to the role of Santa in Violent Night 2. Anyone who has seen Violent Night certainly remembers his performance as a hard-drinking, surly, rough around the edges St. Nick, who really knew how to fight (and had a sledge hammer he called “Skull Crusher”).

In 2022’s Violent Night, a group of mercenaries with festive code names like Mr. Scrooge, Candy Cane and Frosty invade a mansion where a wealthy family is celebrating on Christmas Eve. “Celebrating” may actually not be the right description for this particular holiday gathering, though – these family members are combative, ruthless and don’t trust one another.

When the mercenaries burst in, they hold the family members captive, hoping to get into a secret vault that holds $300 million. But little do they know, Santa Claus is stuck in the mansion with them, since...

‘Violent Night 2’ Gets Ready to Deliver More Holiday Carnage with 2026 Release
Tommy Wirkola in Violent Night 2 (2026)
The Ho-Ho-Horrordays are coming in 2026; Violent Night 2 has officially set a release date.

87North and Universal will release Violent Night 2 in theaters December 4, 2026.

Santa Claus actor David Harbour confirmed his return recently, and, in an update, while Deadline reported it was unclear whether director Tommy Wirkola will be back to helm the sequel, THR officially confirmed that Wirkola officially returns for Violent Night 2.

Pat Casey and Josh Miller will also be back to write Violent Night 2. “There’s stuff we left on the floor like the North Pole, Mrs. Claus, the elves,“ director Tommy Wirkola noted last year. “But story-wise, I think we have a really, really cool idea that expands on the world and scope but still keeping that tone that we love from the first one.”

In 2022’s Violent Night, “A team of elite mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve,...

Universal Sets Violent Night 2 for December 2026 Release
Image
Santa’s back. And he’s not happy. Universal Pictures has announced that Violent Night 2 will be released in theaters on Wednesday, December 4, 2026.

From 87North, the powerhouse producers of Bullet Train, John Wick, The Fall Guy, Atomic Blonde, Nobody, and this summer’s Nobody 2, comes a new chapter in yuletide mayhem.

In 2022’s bare-knuckle holiday sensation, Violent Night, an embittered Santa (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee David Harbour), armed with lethal combat skills, took out a team of ruthless mercenaries to rescue a girl and her family. Now, it’s time for not-so-jolly Saint Nick to suit up again.

Violent Night 2 is produced by 87North founders Kelly McCormick and David Leitch and will be released by Universal Pictures.

In the first film, when a team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage, the team isn’t prepared for a...

Violent Night 2 Writer Addresses Possible Mrs. Claus Casting Choices
Image
Christmas is described as the "most wonderful time of the year," as it brings people back to their families, where they get together and spread joy. The holiday has become one of the most profitable times of the year for many businesses, and big studios have been banking on Christmas-themed films for years.

There are many different options out there, with Hallmark, Netflix, and many others banking on countless cheesy rom-coms, and classics like 2003's Love Actually and 1990's Home Alone being on many people's watchlist tradition over the holiday. However, with 1988's Die Hard being quoted as a Christmas classic, the Christmas genre started adding more subgenres, including action, horror, and more. In 2022, David Harbour portrayed a different Santa Claus in Violent Night, and, with a sequel in the works, the writers teased during an interview with CinemaBlend that there will be "more violence, more Christmas spirit," but also the possibility of Mrs.

Violent Night 2 writers: “We know what the people want.”
David Leitch
Two years ago, Universal Pictures teamed with producers David Leitch and Kelly McCormick of 87North Productions and director Tommy Wirkola to bring us the highly entertaining, R-rated holiday thriller Violent Night (read our 8/10 review at This Link)… and now, Violent Night 2 appears to be heading toward production. Star David Harbour was spotted with the script in his hand earlier this month, and during an interview with Collider, screenwriters Patrick Casey and Josh Miller assured that they know what fans are hoping to see in the sequel.

While Casey and Miller have stayed busy in recent years by writing each film in the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy, they have taken the occasional break from scripting Sonic action to write about Santa Claus taking on bad guys. Violent Night showed what happens when a team of elite mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage.

David Harbour Confirms 'Violent Night 2' Is Happening With First Look At Script
Image
“Merry Xmas, ya filthy animals!” So declares Stranger Things and Hellboy star David Harbour, who has now confirmed that the highly anticipated festive action sequel, Violent Night 2, is not only in the works, but now has a script. Taking to Instagram, Harbour shared an image of himself sporting a Santa hat and sitting next to the real Santa Claus (we can only assume he’s the real one) while holding a script that clearly has the words “Violent Night 2” slapped across it.

While details of the Violent Night sequel have been few and far between since audiences met Harbour’s much more violent version of Saint Nick back in 2022, this is now likely to change, with the actor seemingly eager to return for more bloody Christmas action.

Directed by Tommy Wirkola and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the first Violent Night stars David Harbour as Santa Claus alongside John Leguizamo,...

David Harbour Confirms ‘Violent Night 2’ is Happening Soon in Perfect Holiday Style
Tommy Wirkola
While a sequel to Tommy Wirkola’s action-thriller Violent Night was confirmed almost two years ago, updates have been scarce. That’s likely about to change. David Harbour delivered a holiday treat on Instagram that seems to confirm that Violent Night 2 is gearing up to shoot next year.

Harbour posted a picture with Santa Claus and a caption that reads, “Merry Xmas, ya filthy animals.” But it’s what’s in his hand that’s most intriguing: the script for Violent Night 2.

In Violent Night, “A team of elite mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage. But the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (Harbour) is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.”

Last we heard, Pat Casey and Josh Miller will be back to write Violent Night 2.

Christmas Action Sequel ‘Violent Night 2’ Gets Promising Update From David Harbour

In Christmas 2022, Stranger Things star David Harbour gave us the greatest gift of all: a violent, action hero Santa Claus. Well, it sounds like Santa is indeed listening, as Harbour has now offered a promising update regarding Violent Night 2 after being told about fan demand for the follow-up by Comicbook.com.

“I don’t think you’re alone in that desire. Well, keep your eyes peeled because I also love that movie, and I think that Universal was excited about that idea as well. So we’re working a little bit.

I do think there’s some very talented people working on it, so yeah, I’m excited about.”

‘Faceless After Dark’ Review
Image
Stars: Jenna Kanell, Danielle Lyn, Danny Kang, Max Calder, Michael Aaron Milligan, Kathrine Barnes, Catherine Corcoran, Erin Day, Alexis Louder | Written by Jenna Kanell, Todd Jacobs | Directed by Raymond Wood

Faceless After Dark opens with a warning about the film’s use of strobing lights, and immediately we see Bowie sitting staring at the camera as neon purple lights flash on her face as the image grows progressively smaller and unintelligible voices babble louder and louder. That and several long, eye-straining montages scattered through the film make the warning more than justified

Next we see her armed with a machete making her way through a human butcher shop, only to be confronted by the killer clown responsible for the carnage. And then mid-fight, she stops and complains about having to deliver the line, “Haven’t you heard, the circus left town bitch!”

Bowie is an actress, and that role has...

Is ‘Violent Night 2’ Still Happening? Here’s a Fresh Update from the Producer
Image
Tommy Wirkola‘s action-thriller Violent Night is getting a sequel, we learned last year, but what’s the latest on that project? Is it still happening or has it fallen by the wayside?

Chatting with Collider at SXSW last week, Violent Night producer Kelly McCormick promised that Violent Night 2 is definitely still happening, and might be filming next year.

“We are planning on returns to those universes,” McCormick responded when the outlet asked for updates on sequels to both Nobody and the Christmas movie Violent Night.

McCormick teased, “Hopefully, honestly, even potentially end of this year for Nobody 2 and, beginning of next year for Violent Night 2, if we can find time in everybody’s busy schedules.

“But the development’s going super well and everybody’s really, really excited about moving those worlds forward.”

While many of these movies end up being forgotten after only a couple of months, every once in a while, a new addition to the essential holiday movie canon will be established. Some recent examples are the Seth Rogen comedy The Night Before, Kurt Russell’s The Christmas Chronicle, and the 2015 holiday-horror flick Krampus. Looking back a little further, some other classics of the last couple of decades include Elf, The Polar Express, and Jim Carrey’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Lillian Kagwa In ‘The Changeling,’ Explained: What Happens To Adina Porter’s Character?
Image
There are several characters in The Changeling, but no one is as laden with secrets as to merit an entire episode dedicated to them— except Lillian. Lillian Kagwa, who fled from Uganda and came to America seeking a better life, found herself alone and frightened, even after marrying Brian, the cop. Her heart was a chamber of secrets, and she couldn’t ever really open it up to anyone because she thought she couldn’t afford to. Apollo was the apple of her eye, and when he, too, shunned her, she knew it was time to leave a message behind for him to discover. Let’s take a closer look at the character, which has been portrayed by two actors. The younger version is played by Alexis Louder, and the older one is played by Adina Porter.

LaKeith Stanfield in The Changeling (2023)
‘The Changeling’ Director Describes Capturing ‘Painful’ Scene Inspired By Victor Lavalle’s Real Childhood Experience
LaKeith Stanfield in The Changeling (2023)
“The Changeling” director and executive producer Jonathan van Tulleken broke down how he captured a “painful” scene that was inspired by “The Changeling” author Victor Lavalle’s real-life experience growing up. The scene — where Apollo Kagwa’s (Lakeith Stanfield) mother is compelled to leave her young son home alone while she goes to work — plays out in the third episode of Apple TV+ series.

Fear and uncertainty describe what a viewer might experience while watching the Stanfield-led horror-drama, “The Changeling.” But those words can also describe the experience of parenthood, which is one of the backdrops upon which “The Changeling” rests.

“There’s definitely strands of postpartum depression, how difficult is to be a mother, how difficult it is to be a Black mother,” van Tulleken told TheWrap about “The Changeling,” which was adapted from Victor Lavalle’s book and carries the same title.

Tulleken, who directed Episodes 2, 3, 5 and 6 of the freshman series,...

‘The Changeling’ Review: Apple’s Chilling Fantasy Horror Series Will Keep You Riveted
Image
Every horror story is already somewhat spoiled.

Whether it’s a movie, TV show, book, or short story, the horror classification alone is a tip off to the audience; a warning that despite any good fortune these characters appear to have, their lives are about to take a sharp downward turn.

So unfolds the first installment of Apple’s “The Changeling,” based on the 2017 horror novel by Victor Lavalle and adapted for television by Kelly Marcel. Episode 101 wears the disguise of romantic drama, the story of Apollo Kagwa (Lakeith Stanfield) and Emma Valentine (Clark Backo), a rare bookseller and librarian who fall in love. There’s even a parallel flashback to Apollo’s mother Lillian (Alexis Louder) and father Brian (Jared Abrahamson). Packaged with Melina Matsoukas’ direction, Marcell Rev’s cinematography, and Lavalle himself narrating lofty ideas about fate and identity, you could almost forget briefly forget that promised seed...

‘The Changeling’: Signed Edition of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Bodes New Beginnings for Apollo’s Family (Exclusive Video)
Harper Lee in Hey, Boo: Harper Lee and 'To Kill a Mockingbird' (2010)
A specially signed copy of Harper Lee’s classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” could be the golden ticket to new beginnings for Apollo Kagwa’s (Lakeith Stanfield) family in a new trailer for the Apple TV+ series “The Changeling.”

“To Kill a Mockingbird?” Emma, who is played by Clark Backo, said in the clip titled “What a Day,” which you can watch above, released Thursday exclusively via TheWrap.

The scene in the clip began with Apollo coming home and seeing Emma holding their son Brian. Apollo, book dealer, showed Emma his latest find.

“That’s right, a true first edition, original cover. It’s in pristine condition — not a scratch,” Apollo responded. “Now, a book like that could get us… $10,000.”

In shock, Emma questioned, “10?”

Apollo then proceeded to go more in depth with how that particular copy is even more unique than what he led with, mentioning that Lee...

‘The Changeling’ Review: Lakeith Stanfield in a Muddled Apple TV+ Mystery
Image
According to rudimentary Googling, Apple has a generally well-regarded parental leave policy. But according to the output at Apple TV+, there is anxiety in the water in Cupertino (or in the company’s Los Angeles offices).

Dropping this Friday, The Changeling is the second Apple TV+ series in five years blending fairy tale and horror to delve into maternal and paternal anxieties about nature, nurture and the price paid when parents are forced to leave babies behind to return to work.

Perhaps not as bluntly effective as Servant, The Changeling is an admirably ambitious series, especially on thematic levels, where it seems to be bursting with commentary on 21st century parenting. As storytelling, though, Kelly Marcel’s adaptation of Victor Lavalle’s novel is a mess. Though the series isn’t lurching through time and frames of reality without intent, its refusal to build any sort of momentum becomes increasingly frustrating.

‘The Changeling’ Preview: Cast, Plot Details, Photos, and Trailer
Image
Apple TV+ is launching the genre-blending The Changeling on September 8, 2023 with the release of the first three episodes. Oscar nominee Lakeith Stanfield leads the cast of what the streaming service describes as a fairytale for grown-ups, a horror story, and a parenthood fable.

Joining Stanfield (“Apollo Kagwa”) in the eight-episode series are Clark Backo (“Emmy”), Adina Porter (“Lillian Kagwa”), Samuel T. Herring (“William Wheeler”), Alexis Louder (“young Lillian”), and Jared Abrahamson (“Brian West”). Malcolm Barrett (“Patrice”) is featured as a special guest star.

Just ahead of its premiere, the drama based on Victor Lavalle’s bestselling novel sits at 75% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Huff Post’s Candice Frederick says “The Changeling is an extravagant genre offering about… well, many different things. Most profoundly, it’s about the natural horrors of life and death — as well as the stories we tell ourselves and those we love.”

The Changeling Review: A Supernatural Postpartum Mystery That Fails to Cast a Spell
LaKeith Stanfield
In both dating and television, first impressions are everything. The Changeling begins with a meet-cute between used book dealer Apollo (Lakeith Stanfield) and librarian Emma (Clark Backo). She initially rejects Apollo, only for him to return continually to her workplace to ask her out again. The Apple TV+ show’s omniscient male narrator insists that while some would consider this “stalking,” he, gallingly, sees it simply as “persistence.”

The Changeling flashes back to the story of Apollo’s mother, Lillian (initially played by Alexis Louder and later by Adina Porter), who’s similarly pursued by Brian (Jared Abrahamson), a man who struggles with accepting the word “no.” She also, for some reason, finds this characteristic endearing. The series predominantly focuses on Apollo and Emma as they fall in love, move in together, and have a child, returning intermittently to Lillian’s story as she struggles to raise Apollo single-handedly after Brian disappears.

The Changeling Trailer: Lakeith Stanfield Stars In The Haunting Fairytale Series
Image
Sometimes, you really should be careful what you wish for. Bookshelves all across the world are full of fairytales that have warned countless children about the dangers of sticking their nose in places they don't belong and messing with powers far beyond their understanding, but these stories typically contort themselves to wrap things up with a happy ending. The original Grimms' Fairy Tales took a much darker and more disturbing approach, melding fantasy with outright horror to get their point across. Well, welcome to the much more modern take on fairytales for grownups.
