This Hulu True Crime Miniseries Is A Must-Watch For Lily Gladstone & Riley Keough Fans
Image
This post contains spoilers for Hulu's "Under the Bridge."

Rebecca Godfrey's "Under the Bridge" explores the real-life murder of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old who was viciously beaten and eventually killed by her classmates in British Columbia in 1997. It would be insulting to call this true-crime book an accurate or compelling retelling of the horrific crime, as Godfrey lingers as little as possible on Reena herself. We learn next to nothing about Reena's interiority except for the prejudiced perceptions of her perpetrators, who are consistently romanticized. Godfrey even goes as far as to paint these girls as broken, misunderstood teens, establishing an unnerving thread of sympathy for them throughout. It is a deeply disturbing book, not because of the details of the gut-wrenching tragedy but because Reena is an afterthought in her own story, never delved into beyond the fact that she was murdered.

15 best shows of 2024: ‘Baby Reindeer,’ ‘Shōgun,’ ‘Hacks’ top the list
Image
If it felt like television was completing one era and starting another as 2024 dawned, it’s because it really was. Such critical smashes as Succession, Ted Lasso, The Crown, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, and Reservation Dogs took their final bows in 2023, wrapping up the same year as twin strikes of the WGA and SAG. It consequently felt like the TV world was welcoming a group of fresh faces (along with a few acclaimed returnees) this year.

There may not have been as many out-of-the-gate hits in ’24 as there were in previous years, but there were nonetheless plenty of buzzworthy shows to celebrate, including an exceptional class of limited series — the hottest genre from an awards perspective.

Here is our ranking of the 15 best television/streaming programs of the year:

15. Say Nothing (FX)

This extraordinary limited series adaptation of the nonfiction book by Patrick Radden Keefe spans four decades in the life of Dolours Price,...

The 10 Best TV Performances of 2024
Image
The challenge of crafting a list of the best performances of the year never lies in thinking of people who deserve to be on it. It’s always, always in agonizing over which ones to include in the limited slots we have.

That is why, as usual, we’ve restricted ourselves here to shows that aren’t on either of our individual top 10 lists or on our list of favorite episodes (and why we further kept our ourselves to only one actor per show). It’s not that we don’t know how good Andrew Scott on Ripley or Jessica Gunning on Baby Reindeer or the entire casts of Shogun and Somebody Somewhere and My Brilliant Friend are. We do! We just really want to spread the love when we can, given the sheer amount of excellence on display during the past 12 months.

… And even then, if we’re being honest,...

‘Wayward’ Trailer: ‘Under the Bridge’ Breakout Chloe Guidry Is Powerful in Jacquelyn Frohlich’s Feature Debut
Image
Writer/director Jacquelyn Frohlich’s feature debut “Wayward” strays from being defined by genre — and that’s the whole point.

A road trip drama meets coming-of-age thriller, “Wayward” follows 11-year-old Cleo (Chloe Guidry), who becomes enchanted with the charismatic female hitchhiker (Jessica Sula) whom her mother (Jess Weixler) picks up as they drive to their new home in Los Angeles. When Cleo and the hitchhiker form an unlikely bond, the line between kidnapping and running away becomes dangerously blurred. Will Brittain also stars.

Writer/director Jacquelyn Frohlich makes her feature debut with the film, which premiered at the 2023 Deauville Film Festival. Frequent Duplass Brothers collaborator Ian Michaels produces, with Colleen Camp and Weixler executive producing.

“Childhood can be a treacherous time, and that reality is often avoided in films or over-sentimentalized,” Frohlich said in a press statement. “‘Wayward’ was a quest to make a film where the main voice, the...

Emmy Experts Typing: What surprises and snubs might we get on nominations morning?
Image
Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, less than a week out from nominations, we discuss possible shockers.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back for the final time in Phase 1 before Phase 2 becomes all about how many different ways we can say “Shōgun,” “The Bear” and “Baby Reindeer” are favored to win big in, respectively, the drama, comedy, and limited series categories. I’ll miss these lazy months of informed speculation when I could convince myself that Chloe Guidry and Archie Panjabi are legitimate contenders for Emmy nominations for their striking work on “Under the Bridge.” We made our “final” 2024 Emmy nominations predictions this week and what stood out to me in the aftermath is how little we had in the way of disagreement. Riley Keough on Bringing Humanity to the Tragic Story in ‘Under the Bridge’ Finale
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the Under the Bridge finale, “Mercy Alone.”]

The final episode of Under the Bridge saw the complete, real-life events come to light around the night Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta in the series) was killed in Saanich, British Columbia by a group of teenagers. She was 14 when she first disappeared in 1997.

The first few minutes of “Mercy Alone,” the eighth episode in Hulu’s true-crime limited series based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book, begin with Kelly Ellard (Izzy G.) talking explicitly to Josephine (Chloe Guidry) about wanting to break Reena’s bones with a bat, burn her at the stake and bury her alive in the forest. Kelly’s mom, who is in the room, does not even flinch at her daughter threatening to kill someone in such detail.

Following Warren Glowatski’s (Javon Walton) life sentence in the penultimate episode for his partial involvement in Reena’s death, Kelly...

Hulu’s Under the Bridge, which is based on Rebecca Godfrey’s (portrayed by Riley Keough) book, tells the real-life story of the 1997 murder/killing of 14-year-old Reena Virk (portrayed by Vritika Gupta). The cast, led by Lily Gladstone and Keough, does an extraordinary job handling the subject matter respectfully while all giving remarkable performances.

To get some more insight into the adaptation, Den of Geek spoke with showrunner/executive producer Quinn Shephard and executive producer Samir Mehta about how they approached Kelly’s (played by Izzy G.) trial and the show’s last scene.

The Missing Pieces

“It was a really fun experience for us, and 100 percent we would all go play at the Troubadour if someone wanted us to,” Riley Keough — who stars as Daisy Jones in Amazon Prime’s “Daisy Jones & The Six” miniseries based off the book of the same name — told Jess Cagle and Julia Cunningham during an exclusive interview on Radio Andy.

‘Under the Bridge’ breakout star Chloe Guidry: ‘I really wanted to know why these kids did the things that they did’
Image
Sixteen-year-old Chloe Guidry (who turns 17 in June) caught the acting bug when she was six and has been working off and on professionally ever since while at the same time attending regular school as a (mostly) full-time student in her native Crowley, Louisiana. But her work in the eight-part Hulu true crime limited series “Under the Bridge” that premiered April 17 was a decidedly different experience for her, marking the first time she was involved in a project shooting outside the country and having to attend high school online for five months.

“It’s definitely been the most growing experience for me,” she emphasizes. “Going to a different country is really hard to do, especially when it’s your first time. It can be so lonely.” But she loved the experience of “getting to step into someone else’s shoes and experience someone else’s life. I love the psychological aspect...

Warning: Spoilers for Under The Bridge!

Under The Bridge is a true crime miniseries based on the tragic 1997 murder of Reena Virk in British Columbia. Hulu's Under The Bridge is a true crime miniseries that takes place in British Columbia and follows the tragic 1997 murder of Reena Virk, whom fellow teenagers murdered after an aggressive bout of bullying. The Kids on ‘Under the Bridge’ Are So Damn Good
Image
It’s a Hollywood cliche you have to hire the nicest actors to play the meanest people, and on “Under the Bridge” a group of struggling, lonely teens committing violent crimes certainly qualifies.

Unlike other shows about teens, where the cast is pushing 30, the kids on Hulu’s miniseries all are played by actors aged 12 to 16. This created a few challenges during production, due to the dark true-life plot, which centers on small-town British Columbia and the kids who assault and kill their classmate Reena Virk one night, and then basically all cover for each other while the case unfolds.

We wanted to “[give] them permission to explore the cruelty of their characters,” creator Quinn Shephard said to IndieWire. In Episode 2, “The John Gotti of Seven Oaks,” a few of the teen characters explain how their ultimate goal is to become girlfriends for NY gangsters like John Gotti, and viewers get...

Chloe Guidry & Javon 'Wanna' Walton on Under the Bridge and Teenage Bullies
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Sometimes, a true-crime drama comes along that simply stops you in your tracks. Hulu’s Under the Bridge is one of them. Based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s true-crime book, the miniseries tracks the events surrounding the disappearance and murder of teenager Reena Virk in November 1997 in British Columbia.

Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Riley Keough headline the story, playing a cop (Cam) and an author (Rebecca) respectively. The former childhood friends are shaken by the disappearance of Virk, played with exceptional nuance by newcomer Vritika Gupta. Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton (Euphoria), Izzy G., and Aiyana Goodfellow portray the teens suspected of foul play. Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) and Ezra Faroque Khan also star, playing Reena’s parents.

“I just wanted to tell the story of Reena Virk, and I wanted the whole Virk family to feel justice from this,...

Under the Bridge Producers on 'Brilliant' Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

If you recall how invigorating it was to be swept away in such compelling true-crime dramas like The Staircase and Under the Banner Of Heaven, then set your sights on Under the Bridge. The new Hulu miniseries starring Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & the Six) is based on author Rebecca Godfrey’s true-crime book about 14-year-old Reena Virk, who was found dead in 1997, eight days after she never returned home from a night out with friends.

Virk’s death, and the way this miniseries captures the events surrounding it, forces one to pause — the girl was surrounded and beaten by a group of teenagers. Vritika Gupta delivers a mesmerizing performance here as Reena in a masterful showcase that deals with race issues and the universal need for belonging. That the story arrives during Emmy nomination...

The True Story Behind ‘Under the Bridge’: What Happened to Reena Virk?
Image
How does a fight between a group of teenagers result in murder?

Hulu’s new true-crime series “Under the Bridge,” based on the late Rebecca Godfrey’s non-fiction book, portrays the before and after of 14-year-old Reena Virk’s brutal murder. The first two episodes, released on April 17, show the timeline of events leading up to Virk’s death and the investigation that took place.

The show, created by Quinn Shephard, tells the story of the events that unfolded through the lens of Godfrey (Riley Keough), a journalist who grew up in Victoria and was working on a novel about teenage girls in her hometown when she found out about the murder, and Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone), a local police officer who investigated and solved the case.

Godfrey told Interview Magazine in 2019 how she became involved in the show. “I was living in New York City. This would’ve been in the late 90s,...

Under the Bridge Stars Discuss Their New Hulu True Crime Series
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Starring alongside great actors like Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in a riveting Hulu drama is a career highlight for any up-and-coming star. Gladstone has been riding a wave of success generated by her award-winning turn in Killers of the Flower Moon. Keough stood out in Daisy Jones & the Six and currently stars in Sasquatch Sunset. However, for young actors Vritika Gupta and Aiyana Goodfellow, Gladstone and Keough comprise just one of many unforgettable moments that went into creating the new miniseries Under the Bridge.

The other is the deeply moving subject. Based on bestselling author Rebecca Godfrey’s true-crime book, the 1997 British Columbia-set drama tracks the true story of 14-year-old Reena Virk (played by Gupta), who never returned home after attending her friends’ party. Virk was found dead eight days later—after she was surrounded and beaten by a group of teenagers under a bridge.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Under the Bridge Season 1, Episodes 1 & 2.] Hulu’s true-crime drama Under the Bridge brings to life the real-life story of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), a teen girl who was murdered in the ’90s and almost every one of her peers is currently a suspect as the limited drama series unfolds. Meanwhile, is there more to Warren Glowatski (Javon “Wanna” Walton)? It’s quite clear that Reena’s pal Dusty (Aiyana Goodfellow) is cracking under pressure as investigator Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone) seeks answers surrounding the crime. What's A "Bic Girl"? Under The Bridge's Nickname For The Seven Oaks Teens Explained
Image
Reena Virk's murder sparked a national panic about teen violence, portrayed without judgment in the miniseries. The "Bic girls" of Seven Oaks are seen as disposable, like a Bic lighter, by the town and cops. Under the Bridge explores how society discards women, perpetuating cycles of violence in a haunting true crime story.

The first episode of Hulu's Under the Bridge miniseries introduces not just Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), the Canadian teenager who was brutally murdered in 1997, but a group of tight-knit teens from the town's Seven Oaks foster home. Helmed by ringleader Josephine Bell (Chloe Guidry), the Seven Oaks teens refer to themselves as "Bic girls" while sharing stories and cigarettes with Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough), a wayward writer who finds a renewed interest in the culture of her hometown. Based on the book of the same name by the real-life Godfrey, Under the Bridge is a haunting investigation.

Emmy Experts Typing: Which spring limited series could make a big splash?
Image
Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the packed limited series race, which has seen three new contenders premiere in the last three weeks.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back to what is arguably the most competitive Emmys category this year: limited series. It feels like as good a time as any to return to my favorite race – particularly with “Shōgun” and Anna Sawai dominating the discourse, as well as the premiere of our dark horse favorite “Under the Bridge.” We talked about both shows this week with our voices, and I must say, it feels heartening — dare I type, Siri pay “Vindicated” – to have been so right about “Shōgun.” We both loved that show way back in February and the response has been off the charts.

Who Is Chloe Guidry? 4 Things to Know About Under the Bridge Actress
Image
Following Under the Bridge's debut on Hulu, fans are flocking to learn more about leading actress Chloe Guidry.

Based on the true story told in 2005's Under the Bridge book, this series centers on a 14-year-old girl who goes missing after meeting her friends at a party, leading to a massive cover-up by those involved.

Alongside Oscar-nominee Lily Gladstone, Chloe Guidry embodies the role of Josephine Bell, something of a frenemy to Reena (the story's main character). She even plans the attack on Reena and invites her to the party where her life ends.

Emmy Experts slugfest: ‘Under the Bridge’ will go over big with voters
Image
Will “Under the Bridge” go over big with voters? Did Anna Sawai just lock up the Emmy? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Hulu’s new limited series, the penultimate episode of “Shōgun” and more.

Based on Rebecca Godfrey‘s book of the same name, “Under the Bridge,” which premiered with two episodes on Wednesday, tells the true story of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old who was assaulted by a group of teens, mostly girls, and then murdered in a small town in British Columbia, Canada, in 1997. Riley Keough plays Godfrey, who died of lung cancer in 2022, a week after the show was announced, and Lily Gladstone plays a detective. Both are campaigning in supporting, which on the surface seems like category fraud, but we explain why this is the correct placement for both and how the teen cast members — which includes Chloe Guidry,...

‘Daisy Jones & the Six’ Star Riley Keough Shoots Down Any Hope for Season 2
Image
Update: Soon after this story was published, a source reached out to Variety to confirm that “Daisy Jones and the Six” will not be getting a Season 2 because “it was always planned as a limited series.”

Despite the success of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” star Riley Keough says the band isn’t getting back together anytime soon.

Despite fans hoping — and demanding — a second season of the Prime Video miniseries adaptation of Tara Jenkin Reid’s best-selling novel, Keough tells me, “I would love to but I don’t know if it’s in the cards…I haven’t heard anything.”

The series followed Daisy Jones (Keough) and her bandmates as they make their way through the Los Angeles music scene of the 1970s. The series premiered just over a year ago to positive reviews. Keough and Morrone earned Emmy nominations as did the show for outstanding limited or anthology series.

Under The Bridge TV Review
Image
Plot: based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a local police officer, the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.

Review: While crime exists worldwide, North America’s glut of true crime stories is centered on the United States. We often take for granted that our neighbors in the Great White North are more than America’s nice neighbors or denizens of the Fifty-First State. Canada is a massive country with its own good and bad, with crimes just as heinous as anything we see in America. While the events depicted in Under The Bridge are not as scary as serial killer tales, the story it retells is every bit as disturbing.

Under the Bridge Season 1 Review — Powerful and Infuriating
Image
The new Hulu series Under the Bridge is infuriating. That’s not to say the series is not well done or crafted—in fact, far from it. This is bold storytelling that challenges the viewer to rethink their misconceptions. The result is appointment-viewing television that, by the end of the series, showcases some uncommonly powerful performances.

No, it’s infuriating because of what transpires from “actual” events. It’s tragic and horrific, and words cannot adequately describe the atrocities that occurred in the small, picturesque seaside town in British Columbia, Alberta, Canada. Under the Bridge is where the key players wish the story stayed, never seeing the light of day.

Under the Bridge follows the heartbreaking story of Reena Virk (newcomer Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old high school student in Saanich. Born in a proud East Indian and devout Jehovah’s Witness family, Reena is rebelling against her tight-knit community. Reena...

‘Under the Bridge’ Review: Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough Star in Hulu’s Timid True-Crime Drama
Image
Deep into Hulu’s Under the Bridge, author Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough) defends the focus of her latest manuscript. “People can do horrible things, and that doesn’t make them inherently evil,” she insists. As she sees it, her book is simply challenging the reader to consider that an individual’s humanity is not defined by their worst deed.

It’s a big ask considering the subject in question has been charged with murder — but potentially a worthy one too, not least because the accused is just a teenager. Unfortunately, it’s also one Under the Bridge does not actually have the nerve to tackle head-on. Despite some moving performances (particularly from its young cast), the writing ultimately proves too vague and too muddled in its messaging to shed new light on much of anything.

Creator Quinn Shephard has based her eight-episode miniseries on the book of the same title by the real-life Godfrey,...

Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough search for answers in dark ‘Under the Bridge’ trailer [Watch]
Image
Lily Gladstone is getting sent down “Under the Bridge” to see about this murder.

Gladstone is following up her Academy Award-nominated breakout performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” with “Under the Bridge,” a Hulu limited series premiering April 17. Hulu released a trailer for the gloomy true crime drama on Monday.

The trailer, with its eerie score, dark dialogue about missing and murdered young women, and focus on an uneasy partnership between two investigators, feels like it could be part of the “True Detective” universe. Gladstone plays a local cop haunted by the unsolved murder of a teenage girl, and Riley Keough (who also serves as executive producer) plays a journalist writing a book on the case.

Here’s the official synopsis from Hulu: “‘Under the Bridge’ is based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went to join...
