Finally Dawn Review — Lily James and Willem Dafoe Star in a Sprawling, Absorbing Drama
Image
Finally Dawn (Finalmente l’alba) is a soulful Italian period drama written and directed by Saverio Costanzo. While far from perfect, the film is genuinely immersive in its ability to transport viewers to another time and place. Set during the 1950s and 1960s—an era when Hollywood productions flocked to Rome.

This period saw major American stars, including Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, and Audrey Hepburn, headline films such as Ben-Hur (1959), Roman Holiday (1953), Cleopatra (1963), and Quo Vadis (1951). The result was a cinematic fusion of classic Roman backdrops and American glamour that remains iconic to this day.

Finally Dawn uses this rich setting as a backdrop to tell an absorbing story that unfolds like a sprawling novel, full of twists, turns, and layered subplots. While it can feel convoluted at times, the narrative ultimately finds its way and proves cinematically satisfying.

Lily James Previews Her Upcoming Film Slate of ‘Finally Dawn,’ ‘Relay’ and ‘Cliffhanger’
Image
Lily James’ upcoming slate of films are throwbacks in uniquely different ways.

Beginning with Saverio Costanzo’s 1950s-set Italian drama Finally Dawn, James plays Josephine Esperanto, an Elizabeth Taylor-type movie star who ropes a rejected background artist (Rebecca Antonaci’s Mimosa) into a pivotal scene of her sword-and-sandals epic. From there, Josephine, her co-star Sean Lockwood (Joe Keery) and her jack-of-all trades, Rufo Priori (Willem Dafoe), pressure Mimosa into exploring Rome’s nightlife with them.

While en route to one of their two destinations, Sean Lockwood’s acting insecurities get the better of him, and Josephine makes a half-hearted attempt to compliment their scene work that day. According to James, it’s a highly relatable scene for most actors.

“At their worst, actors are an insecure bunch of self-obsessed, needy humans. Actors and artists are often called upon to be very vulnerable…so it can trigger some serious insecurity and a need for validation,...

Casey Bloys on HBO’s Emmys Haul, ‘The Pitt’ Breakthrough and the Future of ‘White Lotus’ and ‘The Last of Us’
Image
It’s a good day for Casey Bloys, whose programming across HBO and HBO Max tallied up a whopping 142 Emmy nominations across 20 original programs on Tuesday morning, setting a record for the newly re-named platform.

But for the HBO boss, it’s the spread of recognition across both prestige series like “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us” and “The Penguin” — with “The White Lotus” and “The Penguin” bringing in 24 nods a piece while “The Last of Us” scored 17 nominations — as well as the platform’s other offerings — including “Hacks,” which scored 15 nods for its fourth season, and newcomer “The Pitt,” which joined the pack with 13 nominations — that is the most rewarding.

“It’s always a nice recognition of all the creative people that we get to work with and the teams internally, but what was really nice is the nominations were spread across so many shows and so many genres — the dramas,...

Lily James and Rachel Sennott Clash in an Early Look at Stylish Period Drama 'Finally Dawn' [Exclusive]
Image
After a successful festival run, Finally Dawn is finally coming to theaters and digital this week. For an early taste, Collider has a new, exclusive clip of the Italy-set period drama, starring Lily James as an American actress adrift in 1950s Rome. The film follows a number of characters over the course of a long night and was partially inspired by a notorious decades-old mystery. Finally Dawn will be available in select theaters and on video-on-demand on July 18, 2025.

In our exclusive sneak peek, Josephine Esperanto (James) is a celebrated actress with an extensive resume despite her relatively young age. She's at dinner with her younger co-star, Nan Roth, who's playing her daughter in the Egyptian epic they're filming in Italy. Esperanto is to be the subject of a magazine profile, and her interviewer is at dinner as well, interrogating the two screen idols about their acting styles. While Esperanto is clearly old-school,...

Finally Dawn (2025) Movie Review: Fellinie-esque excess and coming-of-age meet the hollowness of Hollywood
Image
You’ve seen this before. A young, unassuming person suddenly gets thrust into the Hollywood limelight as they realize the vanity and hollowness of all the glitter. Saverio Costanzo, who you may know from HBO’s beloved Italian drama “My Brilliant Friend,” is no stranger to the 1950s. “Finalmente l’alba (Finally Dawn)”, which is set in the same period and features an ensemble Hollywood cast, evokes a singular time in Italian movie history when Cinecitta (one of the prominent studios of the time) was known for hosting lavish, sword-and-sandals epics like Ben-Hur.

The young person in question here is Mimosa (Rebecca Antonaci), a doe-eyed movie lover whose love for the medium is quickly established as she, her mother, and a more conventionally attractive older sister Iris (Sofia Panizzi) come out of the latest War movie playing in their local theatre in Rome. As they exit the theatre, discussing the obsession...

5 Essential Rachel Sennott Movies & TV Shows You Need To Watch
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Rachel Sennott is the funniest young woman working in Hollywood right now. (And I don't just say that out of Irish Catholic Connecticuter solidarity.) Sennott has the "sardonic Zillennial girl" market cornered, but she's just as capable of loud, ridiculous, hyperactive comedy as she is at Daria-esque, bitter observational snark. No matter what comedy set Sennott is performing, she's hilarious.

First breaking out as a stand-up and Twitter comedian, Sennott has used her fame to build an acting career, from web series to television to movies. Some of her more high-profile projects, such as the short-lived HBO series "The Idol" and the 2024 film "Saturday Night," use her only as a supporting player. But the most memorable films she's appeared in typically have her in a leading part; that's not a coincidence. I curse that the 2023 live script reading of...

12 Actors We Want To See In The White Lotus
Image
One of the great joys in watching HBO's "The White Lotus" is witnessing its immaculate ensemble cast each season. From breakout talents to generational stars, showrunner Mike White and casting director Meredith Tucker always assemble an exciting, diverse team of actors and actresses to match wits and even trade spars, making for an exciting prestige TV experience. Some of them play into their effortlessly executed character types, while others surprise us with new dimensions to their traditional personas.

At the time of this writing, audiences have already spent three suspenseful stays at The White Lotus, and a fourth is already on schedule. This anthology series -- though some wonder if it can still be called an anthology -- will need a new cast soon enough, so the question remains: Who should we see next? There's unlimited possibilities for strong casting, not only in fan-favorite character actors but also in the...

5 Directors We Want To Work With Rick Moranis After His Return In Spaceballs 2
Image
40 years after the "Star Wars" parody "Spaceballs" entered our atmosphere, fans will be graced with what's been described as "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film," also known as the currently untitled "Spaceballs 2." Creator Mel Brooks and star Bill Pullman have already been announced as returning to the franchise, but the real excitement is that Rick Moranis will be making his long-awaited return by reprising his role as Dark Helmet. Moranis was an unstoppable force in the 1980s and early 1990s, but famously chose to focus on raising his children after the untimely passing of his wife, Anne. While Moranis hadn't stopped acting completely (and he even put out a Grammy-nominated comedy album), he certainly wasn't performing with the same visibility as his heyday.

"Spaceballs 2" is undoubtedly the highest-profile project he's signed onto in decades, which has film fans ecstatic at the prospect of a "Moranissance,...

Review: Emma Seligman’s Go-for-Broke Comedy ‘Bottoms’ on Kino Lorber Blu-ray
Image
Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby drew from the well of modern cringe comedies to tell its story of a pressure cooker of a shiva. That setting kept the film firmly grounded in a recognizable reality. So it’s all the more surprising that Seligman’s follow-up, Bottoms, is a far more silly, over-the-top affair, but the film’s unique blend of deadpan and absurdist humor, and its tendency to occasionally push the boundaries of good taste, shows that Seligman is equally comfortable working at the opposite end of the comic spectrum.

Following queer high school besties P.J. (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri) as they start a fight club in an attempt to impress two cheerleaders, Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) and Brittany (Kaia Gerber), Bottoms immediately announces itself as a warped reimagining of the high school comedy rather than a straightforward satire of one. Its kinship, then, is less...

365 Days of ‘Brat’: How Charli xcx Cultivated a Pop Cultural Phenomenon Her Own Way
Image
“It’s hard being ahead,” Charli xcx declared at an early viewing party for her sixth studio album, Brat, last May, roughly a month before the record’s debut. “We’re all ahead because everybody in here, like, gets it.”

Flash forward a year, it’s been exactly 365 days since Charli debuted the project that defined the summer of 2024 (a la “Brat summer”), had everyone wanting to be a party girl and now unofficially defines the lime green color. A year later, it still feels like Brat summer still hasn’t ended yet (perhaps because she’s still touring the record this summer).

At this point, though, most know that the Essex singer-songwriter breach’s into commercial success was a long-time coming. Of course, Charli broke out years ago, earning her first (and sole) No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with she and Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” in the summer of 2014.

Coincidentally,...

Image
Look, we all know that you can spend a minimum of 30 minutes scrolling through streamers to find something to watch, and a maximum of, well, too long. So, let’s try and narrow that down for you.

If you’re here, that means you’ve at least decided on the genre of film you want to watch, and you want something feel-good. It also likely means that you’re specifically looking for something on Prime Video. Still, that leaves a whole lot of options. But we went scrolling for you, and have some suggestions.

“Legally Blonde” (MGM Distribution Co.) 1. Legally Blonde (2001)

Brat Summer Meets the Grim Reaper in Charli Xcx's Sequel Idea for 'Final Destination Bloodlines'
Image
Pop icon Charli Xcx is revisiting the Final Destination franchise ahead of seeing the latest installment, Final Destination Bloodlines, which landed in theaters two weeks ago. The musician only had the best words for the films, as seen on TikTok, and she didn’t hesitate to pitch her own idea for a potential sequel starring “It Girls.” Final Destination began with the 2000 pic and is currently in its sixth chapter, which is not the last for the franchise, as previously hinted by producer Craig Perry. So fingers crossed, Charli’s version could actually come to life.

In the video, the Brat creator initially pointed out why she loves the Final Destination movies, saying they “really just are about hot people getting killed” and with “no moral backbone to the story.” She then detailed her idea, naming some stars she would want featured in her version, including a scream icon:

“I was thinking,...

Charli xcx pitches a Final Destination sequel with an “It Girl” cast
Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Seann William Scott, Kerr Smith, Amanda Detmer, and Chad Donella in Final Destination (2000)
After a 14 year hiatus, the Final Destination franchise returned this year with Final Destination: Bloodlines – and movie-goers were clearly missing these movies, as Bloodlines has so far pulled in $193 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. One fan of the series is singer/songwriter Charli xcx, who took to TikTok to share her pitch for the next sequel, one that she envisions starring in alongside several “It Girl” actresses.

Charli xcx said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “I’m rewatching all of the Final Destination movies, in preparation to see Final Destination: Bloodlines, which I’m really excited to see. The reason I love these movies is that they really just are about hot people getting killed. You know, there’s no moral backbone to the story, it really is just, ‘They’re hot, they’re cursed and they deserve to die.

Charli Xcx Pitches “It Girl” ‘Final Destination’ Film Starring Rachel Sennott, Jenna Ortega: “Just Hot People Getting Killed”
Image
Charli Xcx has an idea for the next Final Destination film.

The Grammy-winning singer recently took to TikTok to express her love for the supernatural horror-thriller franchise, which just released its latest installment, Final Destination Bloodlines, as well as pitch her own version starring “It Girls.”

“I’m rewatching all of the Final Destination movies, in preparation to see Final Destination Bloodlines, which I’m really excited to see,” she said in the video. “The reason I love these movies is that they really just are about hot people getting killed. You know, there’s no moral backbone to the story, it really is just, ‘they’re hot, they’re cursed and they deserve to die.'”

Charli even has an idea for the perfect cast and director. “I was thinking, well, shouldn’t there be a sort of It Girl version of this franchise,” the “Apple” singer continued. “You know like,...

Dan Levy’s new Netflix series breaks away from Schitt’s Creek
Image
Dan Levy is back with Netflix. After creating and directing the bittersweet film Good Grief in 2024, Levy will helm and star in a new Netflix series that has no name yet. We know three members of the cast, and the show will begin production soon.

We do not need to know too much about the Levy show yet, right? We know we want to see it because Levy is making it. It might not ever reach the heights of the amazingly terrific Schitt's Creek, but few series have.

According to Netflix's Tudum, the new show will follow a dysfunctional organized crime family and focus specifically on two clueless siblings who get blackmailed. The odd part about the Tudum write-up is that it first says the series is a "family drama" and then says it is a "comedy."

Netflix announces forthcoming comedy series starring (and other things) Dan Levy

7 new shows with the most Emmy potential after Upfronts
Image
You've probably heard about several new shows this week. Upfronts — the mid-May period when networks pitch their new offerings to advertisers — wrapped up on Wednesday. And while the list of new projects isn’t as robust as it once was in today’s fractured media landscape, a handful of titles unveiled this week — whether newly announced or accompanied by fresh footage (most trailers shown to advertisers haven’t been publicly released yet) — do sound promising. And if everything works out, maybe they’ll find themselves on the doorstep of the Emmys in a year’s time (or later).

Here are seven shows from Upfronts that have the most Emmy potential.

Task (HBO)

The last two times Mark Ruffalo worked with HBO? He won an Emmy both times. The last time Brad Ingelsby worked with HBO? Three of his actors won Emmys. So what we're saying is Task has the makings of an Emmy success.

Schitt’s Creek & The Conners Stars Team Up for Netflix Crime Comedy Series
Image
Netflix’s latest series will feature two award-winning actors in the lead. Dan Levy, best known for portraying David Rose on the hit series Schitt’s Creek, and Laurie Metcalf, who played Jackie Harris in Roseanne and its sequel series The Conners, will lead a new crime comedy series on the streamer, per Entertainment Weekly.

Both Levy and Metcalf are four-time Emmy winners, and Metcalf was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Greta Gerwig’s 2017 film Lady Bird. The yet-untitled series is described as a family crime comedy and was announced at Netflix’s recent upfront presentation.

Levy is the series’ co-creator and will executive produce and serve as showrunner in addition to starring. Rachel Sennott co-created the show with Levy. She also starred in The Idol with Levy and The Weeknd. Also announced as a member of the cast is Taylor Ortega, who played Shego in Disney’s...

Roman Polanski, Vincent Gallo, and Panos Cosmatos Plan New Features
Image
Nearly 92, more controversial than ever, and coming off perhaps the least-liked film of his career, Roman Polanski has not entirely been expected to direct again. Yet he, still among our greatest filmmakers, doesn’t seem content to let The Palace‘s final shot close his story. (That will mean nothing if you’ve not seen the film; those who have understand fully.) Polanski recently met with Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Maciej Wróbel, who revealed that their conversation concerned “plans related to the production of a new film” that will shoot in the director’s native country. [Wiadomości Gazeta]

As Polanski tends to keep a low profile, we’ve no pre-existing details on what it might be, though this hint of advanced funding and logistics stages suggests word would arrive shortly. As for who agrees to star in it or what festival opts to premiere it––that should be...

’Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy Returns to TV With ‘The Connors’ and ‘Ghosts’ Alums in New Crime Comedy
Image
Netflix has officially greenlit a brand-new comedy series co-created by Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy and Bottomsbreakout Rachel Sennott, with Levy set to star alongside Ghosts and The Four Seasons actress Taylor Ortega and Emmy-winning legend Laurie Metcalf. The untitled project will consist of eight episodes and is expected to begin production later this year. What a mightily impressive line-up that is, goodness gracious.

The announcement was made during Netflix’s upfront presentation in New York by chief content officer Bela Bajaria, who also confirmed new seasons for The Diplomat, Bridgerton, and Love on the Spectrum.

According to the official logline from Netflix, the comedy will follow “two deeply incapable siblings (Levy and Ortega) who are blackmailed into the world of organized crime.” Yes, you read that right. Think Arrested Development meets Fargo — but with more guilt and better sweaters. And presumably no banana stand, but we can't say that for sure.

‘Star Search’ Reborn at Netflix as Live Competition
Image
Netflix is reaching back into TV history for its next piece of live programming.

Star Search is one of a few new series orders Netflix announced at the event. Also on tap are a comedy from Schitt’s Creek Emmy winner Dan Levy; All the Sinners Bleed, a thriller from Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole; The Body, a YA drama created by Quinn Shepherd (Hulu’s Under the Bridge); and Prime Time, a doc series about NFL Hall of Famer and University of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders.

New Dan Levy Series: Cast, Release Date, Quote
Image
Dan Levy is back, and this time he’s bringing the family drama (and crime). Netflix has officially announced a new comedy series under his creative partnership. The eight episodes will star Taylor Ortega and Laurie Metcalf. Levy, who made his feature directorial debut with 2024’s Good Grief, will also star, serve as showrunner, and executive produce. This is his second original scripted series, the first being the Emmy-winning sitcom Schitt’s Creek. Rachel Sennott (Bottoms) co-creates and executive produces.
