‘Atlanta’ Season 3 Is a Startling, Stunning Master Class: TV Review
Image
“I just kept thinking, why isn’t anyone stopping us? Why didn’t anyone stop us?”

Amber (Laura Dreyfuss) is addressing her wife (Jamie Neumann), deep into a scheme that has spiraled beyond either one of these two white women’s control. On their way to the madness of this moment, they’ve demonstrated both a powerful and shocking inhumanity and the grim whimsicality of racism – the manner in which new rules can be created by the people in charge breezily, as if for their own amusement.

This is, and is not, “Atlanta.” The show, returning to the air for the first time since 2018, has jettisoned its cast for this installment, stepping outside the plot to tell a story of startling power. Leave it to “Atlanta” to return after nearly four years off with an episode featuring effectively none of its ensemble cast, save for a brief appearance by Donald Glover...

Claire Parkinson (‘The Politician’ costume designer): ‘I get to recycle clothing’ from timeless periods [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“Creating a show that is really timeless means I get to recycle clothing,” reveals “The Politician” costume designer Claire Parkinson. For our recent webchat, she continues, “I search at a lot of vintage stores and high end designer consignment stores for this show. It’s not all new clothing. It’s very much clothing from many different time periods. This clothing is not all found in a mall or a store. It’s dug around in vintage stores, costume houses and online, to find special things that makes it feel really unique and timely.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“The Politician” is a Netflix comedy created by Ryan Murphy that follows Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) in his quest to become President of the United States. The first season saw Payton navigate the class presidential politics of St. Sebastian High School. In season two, he runs for a state senate seat in New York.

Image
The 2020 Emmy ballots have been released by the Television Academy, so we now know which shows, actors, etc. are in contention for this year’s golden statues. Netflix’s “The Politician” accounts for 16 entries on the performer ballot, including lead actors Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow. Platt plays Payton Hobart, an aspirational politician who one day hopes to become President of the United States … but first he has to win his high school’s student body election. Paltrow, who won an Emmy for Ryan Murphy‘s “Glee” (2011), takes on the role of Payton’s supportive mother in Murphy’s latest series.

Notable A-listers who appear throughout the first season include frequent Murphy collaborator Jessica Lange as the poisonous mother of VP candidate Infinity, Bob Balaban as Payton’s quiet father, and Dylan McDermott and January Jones as the parents of Payton’s frenemy Astrid. Who Wins the Fierce Senate Battle on Netflix's The Politician? We Have the Results
Image
Season two of Netflix's The Politician is a worthy candidate for your next binge session. The seven-episode installment follows the potent, scandalous, and downright-dirty battle between Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) and Dede Standish (Judith Light) as they run for New York's 27th District state senator. From blackmailing to bugging an opponent's office, the rivals stop at almost nothing to take each other down. So who wins the race? Well, the short answer is Payton, but how he claims the victory isn't so straightforward.

Early on, it appears as though Dede is going to win the election. But thanks to heavy canvassing and a climate-change-focused crusade from Payton's camp, the polls even out, showing the two candidates are neck and neck. After constituents officially cast their votes, it's revealed that Payton and Dede tied, and the winner will be chosen by a game of roshambo. Payton and Dede go into analytical overload,...

‘The Politician’ Season 2 Trailer: Payton Readies for the Mudslinging Against Dede Standish (Video)
Bette Midler, Judith Light, and Ben Platt in The Politician (2019)
Netflix has finally dropped the trailer for “The Politician” Season 2, just days before the new installment of the Ryan Murphy-created satire premieres. And the video, which you can view above, gives fans a taste of just how dirty Payton (Ben Platt) might have to get to compete against Judith Light’s Dede Standish in the race for New York state senate.

Aside from mudslinging, Payton and Dede are juggling bugging, moles and “sex pentagrams” inside their campaigns. And that appears to be the tip of the iceberg in what’s shaping up to be the wildest (fictional) NYC-based campaign ever.

Here’s the official description for Season 2 of “The Politician,” courtesy of Netflix, which premieres this Friday:

The Politician Infuriates Judith Light and Bette Midler, Deals With Possible Spy in Season 2 Trailer — Watch
Image
Real-life politics might be plenty messy and scandalous, but they’ve apparently got nothing on what goes down in The Politician‘s second season.

Netflix on Monday released a full-length trailer for the satire’s sophomore run, which follows Ben Platt’s Payton Hobart as he challenges longtime incumbent Dede Standish (Transparent‘s Judith Light) for a seat in the New York State Senate. But just when it’s looking like an easy win for Payton — he does have proof that his opponent was in a throuple, after all — Dede and her chief of staff, Hadassah (Bette Midler), throw a few curveballs of their own.

The Politician Season 2 Pits Ben Platt Against Bette Midler and Judith Light in First Trailer
Ben Platt
We are just days away from the highly anticipated premiere of The Politician Season 2, and Netflix has rewarded fans with the first trailer.

Putting Ben Platt against Judith Light and Bette Midler is a stroke of genius, and something that the series will zero in on during Season 2.

Both sides are ready to make some big waves, and Platt's Payton thinks he managed to leave all the high school drama behind when his reputation imploded.

Unfortunately, Payton's new drive for success finds him trying to bully his way into power all over again, and Dede Standish (Light) and Hadassah Gold (Midler) stand in his way.

With blackmails coming out to play, it will be a wild ride to find out who manages to emerge with their integrity and reputation intact.

Payton has proven he can play dirty, and boy, he plays right into that in these wild scenes from the second season.

‘The Politician’ Season 2 Trailer: Ben Platt Battles Bette Midler and Judith Light

When Ben Platt took to the podium as Payton Hobart in Ryan Murphy’s “The Politician” last fall, it was clear high school politics — at least on television — were never going to be the same. Campy, soapy, and dripping with ridiculously entertaining snobbery, “The Politician” was Murphy’s first Netflix show after making the move from his longtime home on FX, and the reigning queen of LGBTQ TV unfurled his new banner with a mighty Murphy flourish. Never one to pull his punches, Murphy threw viewers for a loop at the end of the eight-episode first season, when it was revealed that Season 2 would jump ahead three years, putting Payton in his third year of Columbia and preparing a run for State Senate.

But here’s the real kicker — his opponent, Dede Standish, would be played by Judith Light, and her campaign manager by Bette Midler. Say what you want about Ryan Murphy,...

The Politician Season 2 Gets Summer Premiere Date at Netflix
Bette Midler, Judith Light, and Ben Platt in The Politician (2019)
Payton Hobart is lining up his next campaign.

Netflix on Monday confirmed that Season 2 of The Politician will get underway Friday, June 19.

If the conclusion of The Politician Season 1 was any indication, Payton is switching things up.

"Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) fights to unseat Dede Standish (Judith Light) in the New York State Senate race," reads the official logline for the second season.

"As a long-time incumbent and greatly admired Senate Majority Leader with no-nonsense Chief of Staff, Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler) at her side, Dede’s re-election was supposed to be easy, but Payton - who sees this as the next step on his path to the Presidency - must decide what kind of politician he ultimately wants to be in order to succeed, even if that means exposing secrets, lies, and a throuple," the logline continues.

"His mother, Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow), makes a momentous decision that threatens...

And just like that — after resigning from high-school politics, saying goodbye to his mother, having his Harvard acceptance rescinded, several twists of fate and a three-year time jump — Payton Hobart is back in the race.

In the closing moments of the Season 1 finale of Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix series “The Politician,” Payton (Ben Platt) decides to run against longtime incumbent Dede Standish (Judith Light) in the New York State Senate race, with his old high-school classmates assisting in his election campaign.

The Politician's Lucy Boynton Was So Scared She Ruined Her Audition, She Ran Straight to a Bar
In Netflix's new dark comedy-drama The Politician, Lucy Boynton steals the show as Astrid, the power-hungry "first lady" pulling the strings behind her boyfriend River, a candidate for class president in a bitter high school battle of words and wills. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing the role after you've binged the show, but Boynton herself wasn't so sure after her audition.

"It was such a quick audition," she told me and a group of other journalists at the Soho Hotel in London earlier this month. "I exited, turned right, turned right again straight into a bar, like, 'I think I ruined that.'" Clearly the show's creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan had other ideas, as she quickly joined the cast.

"I think originally the rumors were that that it was going to be a kind of political musical, but it's strayed far from that.

The Premiere of Netflix's The Politician Doubled as a Big Ole Party For the Cast
The Politician is now streaming on Netflix, and the cast celebrated with a huge bash in New York City. On Thursday, the stars of the dark comedy gathered together for the season one premiere at the DGA Theater. Even though their characters are pretty cutthroat with each other as they battle over politics and relationships, the cast couldn't have been cuter as they walked the red carpet.

The stars, including Ben Platt, Zoey Deutch, and Laura Dreyfuss, looked like longtime friends as they hugged it out, held hands, and posed for the cameras. Lucy Boynton and Gwyneth Paltrow even brought along their respective partners, Rami Malek and Brad Falchuk, as their dates. The cuteness only continued as they made their way to the afterparty at The Pool, which included a statue of Platt just like in the show's opening credits. Yep, it was basically a big love fest! ‘The Politician’s’ Biggest Virtue Is Making Rising Trans Actor Theo Germaine a Breakout Star
Ryan Murphy at an event for Eat Pray Love (2010)
While Ryan Murphy may have modeled his toxically ambitious protagonist in “The Politician” after Tracy Flick, the character played by Reese Witherspoon in Alexander Payne’s excellent political dark comedy “Election” (1999), Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) has more in common with a far wealthier manipulator: “Gossip Girl” Queen bee Blair Waldorf. Like Leighton Meester’s doyenne of the Upper East Side, Payton surrounds himself with the finest things in life, including only the best, brightest, and most loyal political advisors. There’s his buttoned-up beard Alice (Julia Schlaepfer), the engine McAffee (Laura Dreyfuss), and his morally ambiguous sidekick James (Theo Germaine), who would sacrifice his own romantic happiness to see Payton succeed — and thank him for the opportunity.

Like Murphy’s early Fox hit “Glee,” the characters in “The Politician” speak at a breakneck clip, reveling in the comedic sweet spot between bombastic intellect and unabashed self-interest. Germaine’s pointed delivery...

The Politician Review (Spoiler Free)
The Politician is the first offering from Ryan Murphy's Netflix deal and bears all the showrunner's hallmark skills and flaws.

facebook

twitter

tumblr

This The Politician review contains no spoilers.

Carried forward by performances you correctly assume will be stellar and a visual aesthetic, The Politician is in many ways a return to Ryan Murphy’s roots: twenty- and thirty-somethings playing high schoolers, questions of class that are far more interested in the 1% than anything else, and the kind of frenetic ping-ponging plot that’s free of historical accuracy. The Politician has its moments, but it’s not exactly the Tracy Flick-meets-gay-Wes-Anderson the trailer promises.

Payton Hobarth is a disturbingly self-assured high school senior, adopted by ultra-rich parents (Gwyneth Paltrow and Bob Balaban). He knows he’ll be president, the way so many white men do, and he’s already assembled the staff of shrewd friends (Laura Dreyfuss in...

The Politician's Ben Platt and Laura Dreyfuss Might Be the Cutest BFFs in Hollywood
From costarring as the original Evan and Zoe in Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen to appearing as Payton and McAfee in Netflix's The Politician, Ben Platt and Laura Dreyfuss are stuck to each other like glue. The two performers became fast friends after taking to the stage together, and it seems too good to be true that these Broadway BFFs are now being reunited on the small screen. Between all their Instagrams and red carpet appearances, you can tell these two have serious love for one another. Since words fail to express our excitement to see them onscreen, let's take a moment to revisit Ben and Laura's sweetest Bff moments.

‘The Politician’ Review: Electoral Satire Gets a Vote of No Confidence
Lucy Boynton
“I will do better at appearing more authentic from now on,” Astrid (Lucy Boynton), girlfriend to high school hero River (David Corenswet), says early in The Politician, after he suggests sex with her feels fake. River insists that she needs to be more authentic, not just appear that way. “I don’t understand,” she replies. “What’s the difference?”

This is the creative team behind the streaming satire — former Glee collaborators Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, and new Netflix 800-pound gorilla Ryan Murphy — inadvertently telling on themselves. All three men are...

Bette Midler, Judith Light, and Ben Platt in The Politician (2019)
TV Review: Netflix’s ‘The Politician’ Starring Ben Platt
Bette Midler, Judith Light, and Ben Platt in The Politician (2019)
If you tried to drink every time someone on “The Politician” says “ambition,” you wouldn’t get through a single episode alive. For the steel-jawed characters of “The Politician,” and especially its ostensible hero Payton (executive producer Ben Platt), ambition is the urgent undercurrent of just about every scene, revealing a desperate intensity that never lets up. Ambition is what drives them to be smarter, more ruthless, more removed. It’s what keeps them dissatisfied with everything they already have — for better and, more and more frequently, for worse.

It’s not altogether shocking that ambition is also the driving force that brought its creative team back together. For the first project for Netflix, Ryan Murphy turned to Brad Falchuck and Ian Brennan, his former collaborators on a show whose characters palpably ached under the weight of their ambition: “Glee.” Given the thematic similarities between that series and this one,...

Bette Midler, Judith Light, and Ben Platt in The Politician (2019)
‘The Politician’ Review: Ryan Murphy’s First Netflix Series Is an Empty Teen Comedy About Emptiness
Bette Midler, Judith Light, and Ben Platt in The Politician (2019)
In the first scene of “The Politician,” Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) is in the midst of a college admissions interview at Harvard; specifically, he’s at the height of a clearly rehearsed speech about his grand plan to become the next President of the United States. This clean-cut, over-prepared high school senior has studied past presidents to discern critical shared characteristics, and he’s following in their most effective footsteps to his own seat at the White House. As far as he’s concerned, Ronald Reagan created the modern presidency — “the presidency of television and celebrity.” “People like to think of their presidents as characters on TV,” Payton says. “Most actually never meet them in real life.”

But that’s as close as he comes to talking about Donald Trump, and it’s as close as “The Politician” comes to acknowledging the general state of modern politics as a lawless...

Netflix has shared the first trailer for Ryan Murphy’s comedy series The Politician, and this series is set in the crazy and cutthroat world of high school politics. But first he’ll have to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School. ‘The Politician’ Trailer: Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow Fight Deadly Political Animals on Netflix
Ryan Murphy at an event for Eat Pray Love (2010)
Political fights are no stranger to the halls of high school, but Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix series is looking to take that escalating conflict a few bloody steps further with his new series “The Politician.”

“Dear Even Hansen” breakout Ben Platt tackles his first major series role as Payton Hobart, a fatally ambitious high school student whose plans to rule the student body are just a stepping stone on the way to ruling the country. Along the way, he works as an Asb fixer of sorts, sniffing out problematic running mates and trying to crush his rivals at every turn.

Along the way, he’ll have to contend not only with students, but the adults in their orbit, namely Rose (Jessica Lange). It appears as if what begins as a simple race to sway the school quickly turns into a literal bloody battle to control hearts and minds. It...

In the new eight-episode series, Platt plays the preppy and wealthy Payton, who’s convinced his dreams of occupying the White House will only be realized if he first becomes Student Body President of San Sebastian High. Unfortunately for Payton, the other students (and teachers, and parents) of San Sebastian are just as ruthless and willing to play dirty as he is,...

Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Politician’ Trailer: It’s Like ‘Election’ – But With Ben Platt and Possibly Murder (Video)
Ryan Murphy at an event for Eat Pray Love (2010)
Step aside Tracy Flick, there’s a new ruthless student-body presidential candidate in town: Payton Hobart, “an impossibly driven young man who dreams of being the president” and the character at the center of Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Netflix series “The Politician.”

Except the show’s trailer, which dropped Monday, reveals that Payton (Ben Platt), unlike Reese Witherspoon’s unlikable protagonist from the 1999 film “Election,” is actually pretty charming — but also possibly a murderer?

Watch the preview above and read Netflix’s official description for the series here:

Everything We Know About Ryan Murphy’s Netflix Slate: From ‘The Politician’ to ‘The Prom’
Ryan Murphy at an event for Eat Pray Love (2010)
Ryan Murphy is working to earn that reported $300 million Netflix shelled out to sign the prolific producer to an overall deal last year, luring him away from his longtime home at 20th Century Fox Television.

At the Time 100 Summit in April, the “American Horror Story” creator said he has 10 projects in the works at the streaming service: three documentaries, four TV shows and three movies.

While the details about the majority of those films and series are being kept under wraps in the most Murphy-like way, TheWrap has rounded up everything we currently know about the projects that have been formally announced.

See our list below, which we will continue to update as more information becomes available.

Bette Midler
Bette Midler and Judith Light Join Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Politician’ on Netflix
Bette Midler
Bette Midler and Judith Light will guest star on “The Politician,” the first series Ryan Murphy will launch on Netflix after he inked a deal with the streamer last year.

Murphy made the announcement at the end of Saturday’s PaleyFest panel for his FX series “Pose,” and noted that Midler and Light will both appear in Seasons 1 and 2 of the upcoming political comedy. He also revealed that Janet Mock, a writer, director and co-executive producer on “Pose,” helmed an episode of the new show.

“The Politician” is the first series to debut on Netflix after the streaming service tapped the prolific “Glee” and “American Horror Story” creator for a five-year, $300 million deal in 2018. Outbidding several other companies, Netflix ordered two seasons of the show, with another series titled “Hollywood” on the way.

Prior to “The Politician,” Light also worked with Murphy on two episodes of “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,...
