A24 has quickly become one of the most popular movie studios in the entertainment industry. Whether simply on the distribution end or creating its own masterpieces, audiences rush to the theaters when they see the A24 logo flash upon the screen. Even though a majority of the studio's works fall under the horror genre, there are also underrated hits that aren't of other genres.
A24 has created and distributed several soon-to-be classics, and many of them are massively groundbreaking films in their own right. These films are also known to have both new talents and well-established actors like The Amazing Spider-Man's Andrew Garfield and the McU's Florence Pugh in 2024's We Live in time. But what are the other non-horror A24 classics worth viewers' time?

Movie characters often wear absurd and humorous costumes to attend parties, and in some cases these looks can become more iconic than their everyday clothes. Not all movies can pull off a funny costume, since the jokes have to work in-universe and on-screen. This strips away the layer of ironic detachment that many comedies use, in which the characters don't know that what they're doing is funny.
Funny movie costumes mostly show up in comedies, since there aren't many dramas which can spend time on a joke or a costume party. However, it's often the case that these are exactly the types of movies which provide the best opportunities for a funny costume, because audiences aren't expecting it, so it has even more of an impact. Some surprisingly emotional dramas have had funny character costumes just like comedies.

Alien Shark opens with a badly animated CGI meteor heading for Earth. We don’t see it enter the atmosphere or anything, but it must have made it through because a couple of women jogging on the beach find some pieces of glowing space rock. One of them is dumb enough to pick a chunk up and goes wandering into the surf, her concerned friend following her, until both suddenly drop out of the frame in ankle-deep water.
I should have stopped watching then, but I’m stubborn, unfortunately this time I was too stubborn for my own good.
Aleesha is about to go through Ranger training, so what are her plans for the four days before it starts? Rest up, make sure she’s ready for the challenge?...

If there’s one takeaway from the LGBTQ narrative films that came into the world and across our screens this year, it’s the sheer variety of the stories there are to tell.
From real-world historical biopics and inspirational sports dramas, to tender love stories and raunchy comedies, there really was something for everyone this year. Captivating characters, fearless performances and narrative tapestries that defy convention and troublesome tropes all reigned supreme. As such, here are some of the best we got.

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
If the antihero was the poster child for peak TV, then the downright off-putting and repulsive heroes of the story were ambassadors for film in 2023. Expulsion, waste, and self-destruction — bodily and psychic — were on the minds and in the guts of many of this year’s most divisive and in some cases beloved movies.
We’ve all seen the social media tagline that such and such “changed my DNA.” In a moment in which postures of self-deprecation and flagrant wallowing in our own soupy misery define internet expression, it’s only natural that the movies would respond — and the quote-unquote repulsiveness of such characters is borne out of a desire to transform, and maybe become, in the words of Radiohead, something happier, better.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

The contender to watch this week: “The Killer”
David Fincher‘s latest has divided critics, with The New York Times‘ Manohla Dargis calling it “boring” and NPR’s Justin Chang declaring it “perfectly paced.” But if you think about it, a lot of Fincher’s work has proved at least mildly polarizing. He often overcomes those divides by the time Oscar nominations are announced, yet “The Killer” might be too cold and grim even for a Fincher flick. Michael Fassbender, at his most effortlessly slick, plays a nameless hitman suffering the consequences of a rare botched job. Likely a film that some will find underwhelming due to its lowkey, mostly affectless style, it’s a rather impressive feat of narrative economy that manages to separate itself from the seemingly endless indie horror crop. "Dicks: The Musical" is a bizarre and outrageous film that tries too hard to be funny and ends up feeling contrived and forced. Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally deliver standout performances in a film that lacks heart and memorable songs. The movie is smarmy and exasperating, pushing boundaries without a clear direction and ultimately falling short in terms of cleverness and humor.
Sometimes a movie comes along that is so outrageous and bizarre that it’s a wonder it was ever made. Dicks: The Musical is that film. At this year's Toronto International Film Festival, audiences went wild for Dicks: The Musical. The film directed by Larry Charles and adapted from the two-man stage play F***ing Identical Twins by Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson won the People's Choice Award for Midnight Madness, making a totally unhinged, R-rated impression. With its origins on the stage, it's a film that one of its stars Nathan Lane says must be seen in theaters in a packed house to get the full effect. During an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, he expressed what makes it so worthwhile with a crowd and what sold him on the project in the first place.

Larry Charles's film Dicks: The Musical isn't afraid to go to some strange places. Adapted from the two-man stageplay F***ing Identical Twins by Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, it leans fully into its R-rating, following the writers and co-stars as immature businessmen who frequently discuss their genitalia and discover they are "f***ing identical twins." One of the more absurd elements of the musical comedy is the aptly named "Sewer Boys," two diaper-donning monstrosities Nathan Lane found in his adventures through the New York sewers. Lane plays the father of the twins who, after separating from their mother, now spends his time taking care of his little sewer buds. That includes feeding them like a mother bird feeds their young.

Dicks: The Musical takes viewers into a the sordid world of terminally straight alpha males, for whom no conquest is too large. The men, played by Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, are foul-mouthed, self-serving individuals who find a purpose beyond the endless pursuit of sex and money when they learn that they are identical twins who were separated at birth.

They’re impossibly fast and strong. Their skin is pale-white and ice-cold. They travel in pairs and they’re at the epicenter of campy, creepy gay culture. No, we’re not talking about the vampires of “Twilight” or “Dicks: The Musical” writers/stars Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp.
Meet Backpack and Whisper, Aka The Sewer Boys!
Born into this world as a one-off joke from an Upright Citizens Brigade sketch show a decade ago, they’re all grown up and now playing pivotal roles in A24’s gleefully unhinged musical comedy. It’s a genre first for the studio and, though the crusty cuties may remind you of iconic puppets from ‘80s and ‘90s films like “Gremlins” or “Labyrinth,” you’ve never seen anything quite like them on stage or screen before.

Dicks: The Musical is praised for its unique blend of raunchy humor and Broadway-style musical numbers, making it one of the most standout films of 2023. Nathan Lane's involvement in the film, despite initial doubts, was integral to infusing emotion and heart into the story, according to songwriter Karl Saint Lucy. The visible enjoyment and camaraderie of the cast during the making of the movie adds to the audience's sense of fun and inclusion in this wild but touching and welcoming ride.

Based on their play Fucking Identical Twins, writers and co-stars Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson joined forces with Borat’s Larry Charles to bring their feature adaptation, Dicks: The Musical, to this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Full to bursting with lewd humor, a mash-up of genres, and the Sewer Boys, this bizarre A24 musical claimed TIFF’s Midnight Madness Award as well as the hearts of the audience.

From the director of Borat and the producers of The Greatest Showman, now comes A24’s most surprising project in its overall project lineup, Dicks: The Musical. This unique comedy-musical marks A24's first foray into this genre, injecting a refreshing twist into the traditional twins trope. The Larry Charles-directed film stars Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, two very upbeat and astoundingly arrogant businessmen who find out that they’re “identical” twins (they’re not identical).

A24 has become a household name, even among general audiences, because of its penchant for finding unconventional stories that appeal to niche audiences. Many casual moviegoers have been frustrated by the patience required for the more substantial and less generic storytelling typically found within an A24 film, from recent entries like "The Green Knight" back to Jonathan Glazer's "Under the Skin." But when it comes to "Dicks: The Musical," the raunchy R-rated comedy from fresh-faced comedians and collaborators Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp and "Borat" director/"Seinfeld" executive producer Larry Charles, you pretty much get exactly what has been advertised in the movie's zany trailer.

The songs in Dicks: The Musical range from hilariously raunchy to sexually explicit, with some being better than others in terms of greatness. The soundtrack is a surprising mix of catchy tunes. The songs in the movie were performed live on set, allowing the actors to be more expressive in their performances. The cast, including Megan Mullally, Nathan Lane, and Bowen Yang, all deliver delightful performances in the film's 12 songs. Some standout songs include "Desperate For Your Love," a raunchy duet that turns into a toe-tapping rock and roll number, and "I'll Always Be On Top," the film's opening song that introduces the characters' personalities with catchy melodies and hilarious lyrics. The ending song, "All Love Is Love," is shockingly funny with its celebration of different kinds of love and catchy gospel-like tune.

Taking their locally legendary sketch show from a cramped stage beneath a Chelsea grocery store to movie theaters across America, the only thing Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp couldn’t save was its original title.
“In 20 years, when the culture has changed, we’ll put out a director’s cut,” Sharp joked to IndieWire in a deep dive with Jackson ahead of the pair’s feature film debut. “The movie will be the exact same, just with the name ‘Fucking Identical Twins.’”
The creative partners’ basement triumph, better known these days by the only slightly more family-friendly moniker “Dicks: The Musical,” was stuck in Hollywood development for over a decade. Now, it’s A24’s scrappy first stab at the song-and-dance genre: a raunchy-bordering-on-rancid “Parent Trap” redux born out of the Upright Citizens Brigade, with Jackson and Sharp playing opposite bonafide Broadway legends Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally.

Josh Sharp is Craig and Aaron Jackson is Trevor, identical twins who were separated at birth. When a chance encounter at a new job reunites them, they decide to get their family back together, which means a “Parent Trap” scheme – switching places – to reunite their parents (Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally). There are two problems with this … Dad is gay and Mom has no genitalia. Can they be happy again?

A24's independent studio proves its prowess in a new genre with "Dicks: The Musical," a hilarious and depraved comedy with outstanding musical numbers. Director Larry Charles and writers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp discuss the film's energy, originality, and the talent of Megan Thee Stallion, who brings the perfect song and performance to the screen.

Larry Charles dislikes high-budget blockbuster films, finding them offensive and ethically questionable given the state of the world. Charles believes that big-budget films dominate the industry due to a media monopoly system, preventing the success of independent projects. Charles combats the Hollywood system by making films as cheaply as possible, using smaller budgets to create radical and profitable works like Dicks: The Musical.

The most appreciative audience for “Dicks: The Musical” may be the Venn-diagram overlap between viewers who think the envelope for raunchy language in R-rated comedies doesn’t get pushed nearly hard enough and people who saw “Les Miserables” on Broadway three times. In other words, the warning not for every taste has never applied more. But the movie musical will hit an especially sweet spot for folks who want filth and subversion with their show tunes, and who like to hear the classic tropes of musical theater being embraced even as they’re being thoroughly upended.
The weekend box office indicates that “Dicks” is quickly finding that audience, with Variety’s report saying the outrageous film “was a bright spot at the specialty box office, generating one of the best limited openings of the year.” In the meantime, a full soundtrack album came out Friday, for anyone wanting a pre-filmgoing...

“The Exorcist: Believer,” a reboot in the legacy horror franchise, opened atop box office charts despite falling short of expectations.
The film, from Universal and Blumhouse, collected $27.2 million from 3,663 North American venues over the weekend, below estimates that suggested a debut closer to $35 million. “Believer” also opened at the international box office with $17.8 million for a global start of $45.1 million. The “Exorcist” sequel cost $30 million, so it’s well-positioned in its theatrical run.
But reviews (23% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience scores (“C” CinemaScore) were terrible, so the studio may need to reconsider its strategy before the next installment opens in 2025. Universal spent a staggering $400 million to buy the rights to the terrifying property, with plans to at least develop a trilogy around these supernatural battles with the devil. They need moviegoers to feel invested in the series beyond this installment to justify that massive deal.

The Exorcist: Believer had no trouble delivering a first-place finish at the weekend box office with an estimated $27.2 million from 3,663 theaters. While a respectable opening in this climate, the R-rated film came in below expectations domestically as it tries to revive the franchise after Universal reportedly paid a hefty $400 million for rights.
Overseas, the pic started off with $17.9 million from its first 52 markets for a global start of $45.1 million.
The David Gordon Green-directed horror pic hits theaters exactly 50 years after the first Exorcist opened and made cinema history, grossing nearly $450 million at the global box office before adjusting for inflation. Directed by William Friedkin, the film was based on the book by William Peter Blatty and starred Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn.
The Believer recently had to move up its release by one week after Taylor Swift announced that her new concert film, The Eras Tour, will open across the globe on Oct.

“I try to make things like ‘Dangerous Comedy’ or this movie — this movie’s a very low-budget movie,” Charles said of his new A24 musical comedy starring Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Josh Sharp, Aaron Jackson and Bowen Yang. “Politically for me, ethically for me, I find it offensive when movies cost $250 million and the world is in the state that it’s in. So I...

Dicks: The Musical is a wild comedy film with stellar songwriting and all-in performances praised in initial reviews. Megan Mullally's unique speaking and singing voice in the film perfectly complements its joyful and fun feel, and she fought to keep it despite initial objections. The film's sense of liveness, theatricality, and inclusive wackiness creates a joint endeavor of having a wonderful time and enjoying the humor together, as described by composer Marius de Vries.
A24 has jumped into the world of musicals with a bang thanks to Dicks: The Musical. Adapted from a 2014 Ucb one-act production by Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp with songs by Jackson, Sharp, and Karl Saint Lucy, Dicks: The Musical is as wild as its underground comedy origins might suggest (not to mention that Borat director Larry Charles was at the helm of the film). The gamble seems to have paid off, with initial reviews...

The songs and score of the new film “Dicks: The Musical” are deadpan, but about as far away from dead and humanly and musically possible. It sounds like a fully fleshed-out Broadway musical brought to vibrant life on the big screen, even though it went directly from being a two-man mini-show in a New York comedy club to a movie with a traditonal-sounding, fully orchestrated song score, the scope of which is matched only by the gleeful vulgarity of the lyrics.
Creator-screenwriter-stars Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson wrote the lyrics for the songs. But when it came to lending them total-earworm melodies, or production values that sound like the Great White Way or golden-era Hollywood, those responsibilities fell to Marius de Vries and Karl Saint Lucy. The latter co-writer has been in on the job with Sharp and Jackson since they first birthed a miniaturized version of “Dicks” (then known...

A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.
Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.
A SAG-AFTRA interim agreement allowed the talent to promote the film at TIFF,...

Based on Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp’s Off-Broadway show Fucking Identical Twins, Dicks: The Musical plays to the cheap seats from the get-go. This perverse riff on The Parent Trap—in which identical twins separated at birth, Craig (Sharp) and Trevor (Jackson), meet and try to reunite their gay father, Harris (Nathan Lane), with their agoraphobic, wheelchair-bound mother, Evelyn (Megan Mullally)—delights in breaking the rules of good taste. Yet its ceaseless reveling in the raunchy and depraved, including a queer, coke-snorting God (Bowen Yang) and a detached flying vagina, is all that Dicks has going for it.
Larry Charles’s film opens with something of a mission statement: sarcastic on-screen text declaring that Sharp and Jackson are gay and that their decision to play misogynistic straight dudes is incredibly brave. It’s a clear shot at the overt self-satisfaction of certain actors’ tendencies to inflate their own sense...
