To be young is to inherit a world you did not make, a void decorated with the artifacts of previous generations. Snorkeling presents the latest ritual for this inheritance: a chemical communion called “troxy,” inhaled through a mask in a rite that gives the film its name. Here we find Michael, a boy who sees the world through a lens, and Jameson, the girl who offers him a way to dissolve it.
Theirs is not a simple romance. It is a relationship brokered by a third party, the drug itself, a shared sacrament against the crushing weight of a future that seems to promise nothing. They are children of a quiet suburbia, where material comfort conceals a profound spiritual famine, and their escape is not into rebellion, but into a beautiful, synthetic dream.

Annie Baker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and director of 2023’s “Janet Planet,” has set her next feature film, again teaming with A24, as an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Baker’s film is called “Ancient History,” which she wrote and will direct, and A24 has already set Sophia Lillis and Daniel Zolghadri to star in the film.
Plot details are being kept under wraps.
Producing “Ancient History” are Andrew Goldman via Present Company, as well as Johnny Holland and Baker.
“Janet Planet” first premiered at Telluride in 2023, and while the film had a very small specialized box office that did not cross $1 million, it earned Baker two Film Independent Spirit Award nominations for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay, as well as a Gotham Award nomination for Best Screenplay. The film starred Julianne Nicholson and newcomer Zoe Ziegler as a mother and daughter living in rural Massachusetts.

"We all want the same thing... I just want it more." Mubi has revealed the first official trailer for a superb thriller titled Lurker, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (it made it onto my Best of the Fest list). Lurker is the feature directorial debut of writer / director Alex Russell, who already made a name for himself writing the script for the "Beef" series as well as episodes of "The Bear" and "Dave" previously. He's made his mark with this one. This fantastic parasocial, paranoid film arrives to watch in the US starting this August. The film stars Théodore Pellerin, Archie Madekwe, Zack Fox, Havana Rose Liu, Wale Onayemi, Daniel Zolghadri, and Sunny Suljic. When a wannabe-famous loser working at a clothing store befriends a famous celebrity musician, he'll do anything to stay in his world and leech off of his fame. "A screw-turning psychological thriller made for the moment.

Where does the boundary between lust, obsession, fandom, and devotion lie? Alex Russell’s directorial debut “Lurker” explores the twisted nature of celebrity in Los Angeles. The feature, which wowed at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, stars Théodore Pellerin as Matthew, a socially-obsessed videographer who becomes entangled with a rising pop star, Oliver (Archie Madekwe).
Zack Fox, Havana Rose Liu, Wale Onayemi, Daniel Zolghadri and Sunny Suljic co-star. Pat Scola was the cinematographer.
Russell has been known for his writing and supervising producing work on TV series “The Bear” and “Beef.” His debut “Lurker” became one of the most buzzed-about sales titles at Sundance; it was later acquired by Mubi.
“The characters in this movie are archetypes,” Russell told IndieWire earlier this year. “I’ve seen every character in this movie 10 times over. Relating to Matthew is very important because the movie is subjective in that way, whereas a lot of movies about an obsessive person,...

Earlier this year, JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch Lurker, the boundary-pushing debut feature from writer/director Alex Russell, at the Sundance Film Festival. Describing the film as “a terrific blend of black comedy and psychological thriller” and “exactly the kind of movie I want to see when I hit Sundance,” Bumbray gave Lurker a 9/10 review that can be read at This Link. Recently, it was announced that film distributor Mubi (which is also a streaming service and production company) is planning to give Lurker a North American theatrical release on August 22nd – and now, with that date just two months away, a trailer for the film has dropped online. You can check it out in the embed above.

I lived through the uncertainty of Y2K and have vivid memories of the ordeal. The anxiety was real. People were convinced that the sky was falling. Thankfully, the sky did not fall. But what if it actually did? That’s the question the #1 movie on Max today posits. Y2K imagines an alternate New Year’s Eve 1999 where instead of business as usual, technology revolted.
That sounds like such a promising premise. You get a bit of (ultra-late) ‘90s nostalgia and a major cultural milestone reimagined with dire consequences. Unfortunately, the execution of this period piece is lacking. Many critics called attention to the film’s tonal inconsistencies and said that a lot of the jokes don’t quite land.

Y2K, the directorial debut of Saturday Night Live cast member Kyle Mooney, is part romcom, part tech-horror, and too unfocused to commit to either one. The turn-of-the-millennium throwback leans too heavily on nostalgia; it’s concerned far more with familiar products and pop-culture details than with how its characters might behave, especially in the face of practical, Frankensteinian tech monsters. Instead, the ensemble are left trying to navigate the movie’s scattershot tone — one that oscillates between comedy and melodrama without fully letting laughs or heartbreak land.
The movie’s flimsy set-ups are accompanied by disconnected pay-offs that emanate from nowhere. For instance, its third act pivots around a key cameo that would have worked like gangbusters had it even been mildly gestured towards. Instead, Y2K moves from scenario to scenario as though its post-apocalyptic saga were being improvised in the moment, further contributing to its haphazard tonal swings.

Focus Features has bought international rights to “Lurker,” Alex Russell’s directorial debut about clout-chasing and the dark side of fame that became one of the standouts hits from this year’s Sundance, Variety has learned.
Arthouse distributor Mubi had already picked up the film for the U.S. out of the festival in a rumored mid-seven-figure deal, as Variety reported.
A tense feature about an ambitious hipster and the rising pop star he exploits, “Lurker” stars Théodore Pellerin as Matty, a lowly clerk at a high-end sneaker and apparel store in Los Angeles. When his favorite singer (“Saltburn” star Archie Madekwe) saunters in, Matty starts cozying up to the social media star. Before long, he’s installed himself in a world of hedonism and opportunity — and he can stay, as long as he manages the pecking order of the entourage and the fickle demands of celebrity. “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” star Rose Byrne and director Mary Bronstein discussed working with “renaissance man” Asap Rocky at Berlin Film Festival ahead of the film’s international debut on Monday night. The rapper and actor has not been on the festival circuit for the film, which world premiered at Sundance last month, due to his ongoing trial for allegedly firing a gun at a former collaborator.
When asked about casting Rocky, Bronstein said that she “wanted to have non-traditional actors for the supporting roles,” which also includes Conan O’Brien. “One, to give Rose an interesting thing to work with, and two, as a sign to the viewer that I’m not playing into any expectations.”

Writer and director Alex Russell has been part of major shows like “Dave” and “The Bear,” but “Lurker” marks his feature directorial debut.
“It was already such a privilege to show our movie at Sundance last week. I’m honestly still reeling and recovering from that experience” said director Russell in an official statement. “To have found such an ideal...

Riding momentum from its five Academy Award nominations for “The Substance,” boutique movie distributor Mubi has picked up another buzzy indie film for the U.S. market.
“Lurker,” a tense feature about an ambitious hipster and the rising pop star he exploits for fame and community, has been snapped up by Mubi following this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Screening in the fest’s premiere section, Mubi took “Lurker,” written and directed by Alex Russell, in a competitive situation for a mid-seven-figure price tag.
Exact numbers weren’t disclosed but one person with knowledge of the deal told Variety that the sale represents a significant domestic theatrical release commitment from Mubi. The indie distributor previously released “The Substance” and “Decision to Leave.”

“I’m not a fan,” snaps Matthew, the master manipulator in the guise of a harmless nobody eager to soak up some of the refracted rays of celebrity in Lurker. Once he has penetrated the inner circle of emerging pop star Oliver, a fan is the most insulting thing you could call him. Proximity gives Matthew — played by Théodore Pellerin with an evil innocence from which you can’t look away — the illusion of being a best friend, a bro, a creative collaborator to the mononymous singer. Everyone in his entourage wants to bask in Oliver’s glow, but nobody wants it as badly as Matt.

Alex Russell is already an Emmy-winning writer and producer, but with “Lurker,” he steps into the director’s chair — and he got some advice from Baz Luhrmann before he did it.
The film, which made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this year, tells the story of a retail employee who infiltrates the inner circle of a music artist on the verge of stardom. But, “as he gets closer to the budding music star, access and proximity become a matter of life and death.”
Russell has been part of major shows like “Dave” and “The Bear,” but “Lurkers” marks his feature directorial debut. Sitting down at TheWrap’s Sundance Studio presented by World of Hyatt, he revealed that Luhrmann actually gave him some lasting writing advice that he put to work in the project.

Often being under-utilized in franchises like Insidious or sharing scenes with ensemble casts like in Bridesmaids, Rose Byrne hasn't quite had the opportunity to flex her acting muscles as she does in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. This drama truly hones in on Byrne's performance as she steps into the role of Linda, a mother whose life is crashing down around her. The film follows Linda as she struggles with her child's mysterious ailment, a torrid relationship with her therapist, a missing person, and her absent husband, all while experiencing the acute effects of burnout. Byrne is also joined by a talented cast, including A$AP Rocky, Conan O’Brien, Danielle Macdonald, Ivy Wolk, and Daniel Zolghadri.

A transfixing morality tale cleverly turned on its head, “Lurker” opens with an overture: its protagonist, Matthew (Théodore Pellerin), goofing around for a camcorder wielded by a friend. When the person holding the camera jokingly asks Matthew where he sees himself in five years, Matthew replies sincerely. “I already have everything I want,” he says, stealing a glance into the lens.
Rewind to the before times, when Matthew is living with his grandma and working as a retail employee at a hip clothing store in Los Angeles. In walks Oliver (Archie Madekwe), a pop music artist famous enough to cause a murmur among the store patrons. Matthew, abuzz with anticipation, pops on a track that impresses the VIP, and the next thing he knows he’s being folded into the small, sycophantic entourage of not-quite friends and not-quite collaborators fortunate enough to accompany Oliver on his excursions.

Writer-director Mary Bronstein’s latest feature takes audiences on a tense journey of motherhood that almost never lets up.
If I Had Legs I’d Kick You stars Rose Byrne as Linda, a mom attempting to find a treatment for her daughter’s mysterious illness while dealing with an absentee husband, a missing therapy patient and a giant hole in her ceiling that keeps getting bigger.
The film immediately builds tension with a closeup of Linda in a family therapy session with her daughter (Delaney Quinn), who emphasizes that “Mommy is stretchy,” unlike Daddy, whose word is final. Although Linda pushes back, the therapist calls Bs, and the mom continues on a downward spiral of shame and guilt.
Setting the tone, the rest of the movie mostly consists of closeups and strategically composed shots to emphasize her deteriorating mental state. As the hole in the ceiling gets bigger, it represents the...

Most folks seek escapism when going to the movies, while others get off on seeing other people’s anxiety, drawing either catharsis or comedy from the idea that someone else has it worse. Sporting a poisoned-fortune-cookie title like “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” there can be little question as to which category best describes Mary Bronstein’s stress-fueled second feature. With her husband away and her daughter hooked up to a constantly beeping medical device, exasperated Linda (Rose Byrne) may be going out of her mind, but Bronstein puts us squarely inside it, as the walls close in, the ceiling collapses and the floor buckles beneath her.
An A24 release forged in much the same mold as “Good Time” or “Uncut Gems” (which Bronstein’s partner Ronnie co-wrote), the Safdie-esque — but refreshingly female-centered — indie movie could be “Mommy No-Legs” to those guys’ crazy-making “Daddy Longlegs”: a...

Hosting the Academy Awards has already been proven to be one of Hollywood’s toughest gigs, but doing so in the wake of L.A.’s most catastrophic wildfires makes it even more challenging. Especially considering that it seems everyone has an opinion about how, why and if it should even proceed at all given the present circumstances.
But Conan O’Brien is up for the job. He’s also among the thousands of Angelenos that were forced to evacuate from their homes as the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire devastated the city, so he’s well aware of the sensitivities.

A24 delivered the “disaster comedy of the millennium” when their film Y2K (you can read our review at This Link) reached theatres on December 6th – but not a lot of movie-goers turned out to see it. The movie has only made $4 million at the domestic box office. Maybe it will be better luck when viewers have the option to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes… and that option is arriving very soon. Next week, in fact. Y2K is set to receive a digital release on December 24th and is available for pre-order on Apple TV and Amazon.
The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, who also crafted the screenplay with Evan Winter, Y2K has the following official logline: On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

Warning: Spoilers for Y2K.
Exploding with just about every reference from 1999, Y2K is a horror comedy directed by SNL alum Kyle Mooney in his directorial debut, which is also co-written by him and Evan Winter. The film follows two high school losers named Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), who finally decide to live a little by crashing the house party of a classmate on New Year's Eve in 1999. With plenty of Can’t Hardly Wait and Superbad vibes, the beginning of the film is rife with all the woes of teenage angst but rapidly shifts toward a bloody and imaginative version of the Y2K issue that plagued the country leading up to the year 2000.
In reality, nothing happened. However, in Mooney’s film, machines take over at the stroke of midnight and subsequently turn against humanity, either killing them or assimilating them. Now on the cusp of an apocalypse,...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about Y2K.
Kyle Mooney is partying like its 1999 with the release of his directorial debut Y2K, a nostalgic horror comedy that plays on a familiar public hysteria 25 years later.
The Saturday Night Live alum, who directed and co-wrote the A24 film with Evan Winter, told Deadline that the coming-of-age story becomes a “whole different movie” after the unexpectedly heartfelt death scene of Julian Dennison‘s Danny.
“I felt like we knew it was coming, and it was fascinating, because we shot pretty much chronologically, and so we were making this whole different movie,” explained Mooney of the film, which is now in theaters.
Set on New Year’s Eve in 1999, Y2K follows best friends Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny as they ring in the new millennium at a house party, where electronics come to life after the stroke of midnight and go on a killing spree.

Review: As a millennial, I’ve always gotten a kick out of the hysteria surrounding Y2K. The idea of all the computers going haywire simply because of the passing of a date always felt pretty wacky. But the event has never really gotten a proper cinematic telling. Until now. SNL’s Kyle Mooney makes his directorial debut with a film that feels like Small Soldiers on steroids. But if you’re not into nostalgia, then you may have to look elsewhere. Thankfully, nostalgia may as well be my middle name.

The film is set during a New Year’s Eve party which two uncool high school kids (Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison) crash. When the clock strikes midnight and the electronics go “Maximum Overdrive,...
