A take on Ivan Reitman’s 2014 sports movie, Draft Day, is coming to television. The movie, which starred Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, and the late Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) focused on an NFL football general manager, but the new series will be set in a different sports world - the NBA.
Per Deadline, Lionsgate TV, SpringHill, and Madison Wells are developing the Draft Day series that will “capture the drama and excitement of watching basketball players get drafted and fulfill their dreams,” in a similar fashion to the Reitman film. The film version currently has a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $29.8 million at the worldwide box office.
NBA star LeBron James and Maverick Carter founded SpringHill, which will executive produce the TV series. Madison Wells, which produced 2014’s Draft Day, will produce the show. No writer has been attached to the project.

The sports docuseries craze is hitting the college circuit, with USC star JuJu Watkins set to star in and executive produce an upcoming documentary series for NBC and Peacock.
The series, On the Rise: JuJu Watkins, will premiere its first two episodes on Saturday. Nov. 23. at 3 p.m. on NBC, just ahead of the broadcast of the USC vs. Notre Dame basketball game. Episodes three through six will be exclusive to NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service.
The series, from Klutch Sports, Uninterrupted and 4.4.Forty, will “give people more insight into who I am, my values and my story, because I take so much pride in it,” Watkins tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview.
But it is also quietly carving out an entirely new model for the sports doc, with most previous projects connected to all-time-great players or historic moments, or perhaps a current behind-the-scenes series like Netflix’s Starting 5.

It has been a tough few years for the sports TV newsmagazine, but Jemele Hill thinks the format is ripe for a reinvention.
The journalist and ESPN veteran is leading a new program for TNT Sports called Above The Fold, which will “delve into important stories and topics centered on the connection between sports and culture.”
Hill says that the program is a “love letter to the profession that changed my life,” with its title a reference to the most important stories to be featured in a daily newspaper.
“As somebody who has now been in this business for almost three decades as a professional, it’s certainly hard not to notice that a lot of the shows, such as Outside The Lines, and E60, those hard hitting, deep dive, long-form type shows almost went extinct,” Hill tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “What I love about being a...

When Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum stepped foot on the sidewalk in front of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre for the world premiere of Netflix’s Starting 5, an announcer’s voice cut through the music to announce the arrival of a “world champion” over the loud speakers. Yes, there was an announcer and a deejay at the high-energy Sept. 23 premiere, which featured a hardcourt in place of a traditional red carpet and rows of basketballs to set the scene.
“It’s a hell of a feeling, man,” Tatum told The Hollywood Reporter minutes later of being introduced to the crowd in that way, thanks to his Boston Celtics winning the NBA championship last season, a victory followed by a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. “We accomplished something that’s almost impossible to do, something we worked very hard to do. I’m glad we made it happen.”

A docuseries about the life of the late, great Nipsey Hussle is in the works from LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s Springhill and Hussle’s Marathon Films. The as-yet untitled docuseries tells Hussle’s life story, from his days as a young boy growing up in Crenshaw, to the musician and activist he became in the later years of his life. It features exclusive access to Nipsey’s inner circle, never-before-seen archival footage, and interviews with more than 50 collaborators including Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Diddy, and Nipsey’s longtime partner, Lauren London.
Springhill is financing and executive producing the series. You can watch a teaser below.
“It’s an incredible honor for SpringHill to have a part in sharing Nipsey’s story and legacy with the world,” said James. “He used his gift to give back to his community and lived what it means to inspire, empower, and uplift others along the way.

Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the official red band trailer for the film “House Party,” a raunchy, genre-bending comedy adventure co-produced by basketball legend LeBron James.
Starring actors Jacob Latimore and Tosin Cole, the trailer gives glimpses at some of the hilarity and mayhem to come in the upcoming release, including a scene where the duo find themselves in James’ house, talking to a hologram the athlete created to shower him in words of affirmation.
“He got a hologram of himself, just to give him compliments?” Latimore quips in the trailer.
The feature is a remake of a 1990 comedy by the same title, though the plot has been adapted for a new, modern audience. As opposed to the two leads being high-schoolers in search of a fun night, Latimore and Cole play two aspiring club promoters who decide to host a massive party to distract from their financial troubles after being...

New Line’s reboot of House Party, which was originally supposed to go to HBO Max, but was given a theatrical release, will now open on Jan. 13, 2023 rather than Dec. 9, 2022.
Bad news: That shifts one wide release out this year, however, two weekends before Christmas was a desert last year with Steven Spielberg’s ultimate Oscar winning West Side Story flopping out of the gate. Good news is that it puts House Party on a prime moviegoing holiday weekend, and next to Blumhouse/Universal’s horror title M3GAN. Pre-pandemic, pop event tentpoles like Jumanji: Next Level and Into the Spiderverse have proved to open and leg out into the New Year. Warner Bros. has the family pic Wonka in the Dec. 15 spot for 2023, prior to Christmas.
Calmatic directs off a screenplay by Jamal Olori and Stephen Glover. Tosin Cole, Jacob Latimore, Karen Obilom and DC Young Fly star. LeBron James...
