Unpleasant characters do things that make no sense in “found footage” clearly edited together from multiple sources. Negligent storytelling at its worst. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): really hating found footage lately
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Just when I think the “genre” of found-footage can’t get any worse — which is typically while I’m suffering through the previous found-footage movie — I am proven wrong by the next one. But The Gallows isn’t merely a new low in a filmmaking gimmick that has long since been played out: it might be the best-worst example yet of how lazy filmmakers seem to think shaky handheld cinematography and a faux accidental-documentary facade is a substitute for a well-written script that tells a coherent story populated by characters we enjoy spending time with, even if it’s only in a love-to-hate-them way.

The Gallows is a terrible film. That is all you need to know. To revisit it for the purposes of writing a review is the only horrifying effect it yields, being a lazy, uninspired, painfully contrived concoction of everything bad about the found footage subgenre.
Not for one single frame of its mercifully short 81-minute running time does it present any impact or originality, with the movie following a bunch of stupid, borderline sociopathic students as they run around darkened school corridors waiting for the next clearly signposted jolt to arrive. They've been hurled together through a poorly conceived and staggeringly underdeveloped premise involving the staging of a play that was the setting for an accidental death that happened during a performance 20 years earlier at the school.

You know the old saying less is more? Yeah, well, sometimes less is just…less. Such is the way with The Gallows, the new film from lo-fi horror producers Blumhouse (Paranormal Activity, The Purge), which managed the astounding feat of both dragging throughout most of its length and yet having barely anything to show for itself by the time the credits mercifully rolled.
The film takes the tried-and-tired trope of found footage and plays it old school, meaning that it makes no attempts to improve or subvert the formula that’s worked (dubiously) for almost two decades now. High schooler and douchebag jock Ryan is our cameraman for most of the proceedings, as he decides that the only way to make his mandatory drama lessons more interesting is to film everything...

Chicago – We all know dramatic films win most of the awards, comedies are hit or miss and horrors often don’t deliver the scares they promise. The problem with the horror genre lately is Hollywood is afraid to go against a “proven” formula (for financial reasons) and really think outside the box.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
After 2009’s “Paranormal Activity” took the world by storm (grossing $193 million worldwide on a tiny $15,000 production budget), producing it paved the way for Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions to produce and put his stamp on “Insidious,” “Sinister,” “The Purge,” “Ouija,” “The Lazarus Effect,” “The Boy Next Door,” “Jessabelle,” “Unfriended,” “Oculus” and all of their follow-ups. There pretty much isn’t a horror film released by Hollywood these days without Jason Blum attached to it. That’s a double-edged, monopolistic sword that has been producing new films without continuing to innovate.

The latest offering from the Blumhouse Productions factory, The Gallows comes up with two new angles to explore otherwise familiar found-footage territory. First, a good portion of the footage is presented from the point of view of a very unlikable young man named Ryan (Ryan Shoos), who has been placed in charge of recording highlights from a high school theater production. He makes bad jokes about the play and mocks the "theater geeks" who are involved, including his apparent best friend Reese (Reese Houser). As the footage reveals, Reese is not a very good actor but has been cast opposite a fetching young woman called Pfeifer (Pfeifer Brown), which is meant to explain his motivation for participating. When Ryan discovers a broken exterior door to...

Warner Bros. Pictures released their new horror/thriller film, "The Gallows," into theaters today, July 10th, 2015, and all the top, major movie critics have turned in their reviews. It turns out that it didn't quite resonate too well with them, getting only an overall 31 score out of a possible 100 score across 20 reviews at the metacritic.com site. The film stars: Cassidy Gifford, David Herrera, Melissa Bratton, Pfeifer Brown, Price T. Morgan, Reese Mishler, Ryan Shoos, Theo Burkhardt and Travis Cluff. We've posted blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a decent 75 score, stating: " This is the kind of movie where you can anticipate the next big shock and it usually arrives right on cue, and yet it still gets you right in the gut." Peter Keough over at the Boston Globe, gave it a 63 grade. He stated: "Occasionally the camera gets jumbled around,...

MacDeath: All the World’s a Grave in Stilted Found Footage Horror
It seems we’ve yet to hit the bottom of the found footage barrel, at least if the new studio backed PG-13 teen scream title The Gallows is any indication. Director Travis Cluff reunites with Chris Lofling, the editor of his 2012 family film Gold Fools, to co-write and direct this obnoxious entry managing to be more adolescent than its terrorized subjects. With vapid drudgery, a quartet of unpleasant juveniles struggle to survive the haunted halls of their high school, while audiences are required to check logic and comprehension at the plot synopsis in order to sustain the running time. Nonsensical and laborious, this is a horridly designed, cheaply assembled outfit only managing to offer up proof as to why found footage horror is not the sensible alternative to churning out low overhead cinema.

Anytime you make statements about an entire style of filmmaking, you are going to be proven wrong. I could say, "I don't like found-footage horror films anymore," and in general, that may be true, but then something comes along that works and you have to retract the big broad statement. I think the simple test is this: would the story you are telling be scary if you shot it a different way? The "Paranormal Activity" series is an interesting example of this. I like the overall story that series has been telling, and I think there's an interesting mythology that they've built. The actual storytelling is tied directly in to the use of the "found footage," though, and I'm not sure you could make those movies a different way and still tell that story. I liked "Afflicted" a lot recently, which could easily have worked as a conventional horror film.

Just when you think the found footage horror film has gasped its last breath, the sub-genre finds a way to revive itself – like how Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers somehow always find a way to return. The Paranormal Activity series tapped into the public’s desire for handheld “real” scares back in 2009 when the first film became a huge success. Five sequels followed since then with a long-delayed sixth one planned for release this Halloween. Many of the other found footage horror films during this period consisted of the same two elements that Oren Peli included in the hit film: human possession and otherworldly spirits. The Last Exorcism, The Devil Inside, and As Above/So Below are just some of the films that I’m referring to.
It’s interesting to see the found footage horror genre come back like one of these 1980’s screen killers considering The Gallows seems...

I'll give The Gallows this: it's short. Its running time is a short 81 minutes, the characters are shortsighted and the narrative is short-lived. Yet there's something endlessly meandering about New Line's latest found-footage jump-scare fest, as writers/producers/directors Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff's film panders on at least 30 minutes too long. For as little as it seems, maybe they shouldn've gone one step farther and made it a short film. Carbonated and canned to look and appear like every horror movie released to the masses today, this low-budget terror-seeker finds unsuspecting teenagers Reese Houser (Reese Mishler), Ryan Shoos (Ryan Shoos), Pfeifer Ross (Pfeifer Brown) and Cassidy Spilker (Cassidy Gifford) caught in the chambers of their haunted Beatrice High School the night before the premiere of their staged production of "The Gallows." How did this happenc Something like this. The play has a precarious history for the school, as it...

As someone who grew up a bit of a theatre brat years (and years) ago, I’m always game for a genre film that immerses viewers into that community. The recent horror/comedy/musical mash-up, Stage Fright, did a pretty great job playing around in this environment but I must say, it’s nice to see a film like The Gallows come along and bring a little bit of fear back to the stage. The story of The Gallows may be similar to ones you’ve seen before, but the way that both Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing present their material feels uniquely horrifying. And while I may have been left wanting a few more details out of their killer’s backstory, overall I was pleasantly surprised by how intense and well-crafted The Gallows ended up being in the end.

The Gallows: competently shot, horrendously written and absolutely f#cking terrifying when it wants to be. In other words, The Gallows is a rigorous task destined to make any found footage fan want to rip his or her hair out. At this very moment, my inner angels and demons are clashing over whether the merits of creators Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing deserve praise or dismissal, because there’s so much to love And hate in this short, compact horror flick.
On one hand, the film immediately proves to be anything but noteworthy. Following a typical cinematic horror formula, we find the stars of this easily predictable maze running through The Gallows’ haunted high schools halls without any surprises. On the other hand, wicked screams ignite bone-chilling scares that reach farther than just a well-placed jump. Can blood-red-tinted moments of true fear outweigh characters who are obnoxiously oblivious to the demonic world around them?...

This Friday, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. are hoping a new horror icon is born with their upcoming film, The Gallows. Co-written and directed by Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing, the story follows a group of high school drama students (Reese Mishler, Pfeifer Brown, Ryan Shoos, and Cassidy Gifford) who are terrorized one night as they prepare to perform “The Gallows”- the doomed play that claimed the life of a teenager some 20 years prior after a stunt went horribly wrong.
During the recent press day at the Hollywood High School, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with the cast of The Gallows about their experiences working on the film, the challenges of the movie’s unconventional shooting style and dealing with their own superstitions during production.

Prior to the opening night showing of Insidious 3, audiences were shown the trailer for The Gallows. Needless to say, the packed theater (and me) freaked out. It would have been laughable if it hadn’t been so scary.

Although Blumhouse Productions' latest found footage offering 'Area 51' may have fallen quite short of providing us with any form of originality or frights there is a lot more hope for the arrival of their new genre project 'The Gallows'. The full UK trailer has just arrived following up from the chilling teaser we saw a little while back. The trailer itself is a tad disappointing to be honest and has that run of the mill feel to it but here's hoping the movie itself will deliver a lot more. It stars Cassidy Gifford, Ryan Shoos, Reese Mishler and Pfeifer Brown and writer/director Travis Cluff's 'The Gallows' will arrive in theatres here in the UK on 17 July courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures UK and New Line Cinema and you can check out the new trailer below....

The Gallows is another horror film from Blumhouse Productions. Steeped in mystery, a teaser trailer has been released for the film. The clip shows a hangman, a noose and a terrified young woman. The Gallows stars Cassidy Gifford, Pfeifer Brown and Ryan Shoos. The film was developed by Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing. The blood red infused trailer lies below. Only a few story details have been released. From the synopsis, a tragedy has taken place in a small town. 20 years later, that tragedy is replayed in a small production. But, something or someone is critical of this new production and out for blood. Blumhouse Productions, from Jason Blum, continues to create low budget horror. This production house has completed such hits as The Purge, Sinister and the Paranormal Activity series of films. Will The Gallows be another hit? Fans can decide for themselves on July 10th, 2015, when the film reaches theatres.

Aside from their creative use of thrifty budgets, sequel spawning ability and penchant for scaring lots of cash out of eager filmgoers, the trademark of Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions is fast becoming a low, threatening rumble on the soundtrack. It’s present and correct in this first, colour-saturated teaser for The Gallows.Developed by writer/directors Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff via work on YouTube, the film takes the form of a found-footage horror set in a high school.Cassidy Gifford, Pfeifer Brown, Ryan Shoos, Reese Mishler and Alexis Schneider star in the story of students in a small town who plan a stage production aiming to honour the anniversary of a lead actor dying in the same play at the same location 20 years before. Somewhat naturally, this proves to be A Very Bad Idea, as the forces around the original incident aren’t ready for things to stay buried.

The middle of Spring actually means a new selection of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and with a ton of big-budget films slated to come out within the next few months and beyond, the summer of 2015 looks like one to remember.
From the new Mad Max (which is already on our end-of -year top ten list event though we haven’t yet seen it) to Avengers, Poltergeists, male strippers, talking teddy bears, and a reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise, this summer’s trips to the theaters will be jam-packed with sequels and new tales. From May 1st right through to the end of August, some of the movies on our list could wind up on year-end “best of” lists or even receive some Oscar talk by December.
Grab your calendar, because Wamg has a rundown of this summer’s films we’re most excited about, so check them out below!

Four titles – Doug Liman’s Edge Of Tomorrow (with Village Roadshow Pictures), Phil Lord & Christopher Miller’s The Lego Movie (also with Village Roadshow Pictures), and Noam Murro and Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise Of An Empire (with Legendary), along with the 2014 spillover grosses from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug...
