‘Night Harvest’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Scot Scurlock, Dylan A. Young, Timothy Rogers, Faith McCoy, Garius Kemp, Tanner Bluewolf, Madelyn Hopfensperger, Daniel Considine | Written and Directed by Charlie Steeds

For his third film of the year, writer/director Charlie Steeds delivers Night Harvest, a blend of Firestarter and Dark Night of the Scarecrow, with a dash of Friday the 13th: The New Blood thrown in for good measure. It’s an odd mix to be sure, but it fits in with it actually fits in with Lord of Wolves, which could best be described as Hellraiser with werewolves and the Christmas slasher He Sees You When You’re Sleeping. And Steeds has shown a talent for blending genres and delivering bloody, atmospheric horror with its roots in 80s cinema.

The film begins with a chilling black-and-white prologue set in 1958, centring on a farmer who has an unfortunate run-in with an inbred hillbilly named Judd. This...

‘Alien Hunt’ – It’s an ‘Alien’ and ‘Predator’ Mockbuster Rolled into One! [Trailer]
Image
While you wait for Alien: Romulus, the folks over at Devilworks have cooked up their own slice of “mockbuster” fun with Alien Hunt, and we’re debuting the trailer here on Bd this morning.

This brand-new sci-fi horror from director Aaron Mirtes is set for its US premiere on May 14, and you can find it on digital thanks to Devilworks.

You can exclusively watch the official trailer for Alien Hunt below, which looks to combine elements of Alien and Predator. This particular “mockbuster” has very little interest in hiding its inspirations, with the alien designs plucked straight out of H.R. Giger’s beautiful brain. Hey, if you’re going to pull from other movies, might as well take from the all-time greats!

In Alien Hunt, “On a hunting trip in the wilderness, a group of siblings discovers an abandoned military outpost on their land, but is it what it seems?...

‘Escape Pod’ Review

Stars: Patrick Sharn, Fallon Gyurko, Brad Belemjian, Patience Dodson | Written and Directed by Aaron Mirtes

Asher has a lot to deal with as Escape Pod opens. The last thing he remembers is getting ready to take a placement test for a position on Starline’s Magellan space mission. Now he’s regained consciousness to find himself in an escape pod with Maia who tells him he’s been working on the Magellan 3 for the past five years.

Now he’s dealing with both memory loss and the realization that he’s floating in space somewhere near Alpha Centauri waiting for NASA to come and rescue him. While he waits, he’s stuck listening to Maia bitching at him because he was an upgrade Technician, a maintenance man in plainer language, he doesn’t remember any of his training. Considering how many things seem wrong with the pod, it would be...

‘The Bigfoot Trap’ Review
Image
Stars: Tyler Weisenauer, Zach Lazar Hoffman, Andy Kanies | Written and Directed by Aaron Mirtes

Writer/Director Aaron Mirtes opens his film on Josh MacMahon (Tyler Weisenauer), a journalist whose own show specialises in mocking the off-beat people he interviews. After his video insulting a flat-Earther goes viral, Josh is given his next assignment: document Red Wilson (Zach Lazar Hoffman) as he attempts to catch a sasquatch in the Bigfoot trap he built.

In the vein of his successful video, Josh is asked to humiliate Red for his beliefs. This leaves the journalist feeling guilty about his work, as he desires to release important pieces yet is discouraged by the idea that they would not get clicks. Believing this is a necessary step in his career progression, Josh’s justifications feel like something others have told themselves to lessen their guilt while trying to reach their dream job.

Meeting with Red and his long-time friend,...

MidWest WeirdFest announce the full program for 2023
Image
MidWest WeirdFest have announced the full program for 2023. The 7th annual film festival – a cinematic celebration of of all things fantastic, frightening, paranormal, and just plain weird – takes place March 3rd – 5th, 2025 at the Micon Downtown Cinema in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Among the fest’s fantastic line-up of horror, sci-fi, underground and documentary cinema, are several fantastic films that will be premiering at the event. One of these is Braek (pictured above), a genre-bending crime caper come rural horror movie. Says Braek director John Fallon:

The making of Braek was a suicide mission and I couldn’t have pulled it off without my small yet efficient cast/crew. Better to go to war with 15 lions than a 100 sheep as they say. We are very proud to have our USA premiere at Midwest WeirdFest, a festival that I’ve always esteemed. Braek is more than just another ‘home invasion’ type...

‘Painted in Blood’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Deiondre Teagle, Deborah Seidel, Brad Belemjian, Zach Lazar Hoffman, Allison Shrum, Alice Raver, David Ditmore, Dylan A. Young | Written and Directed by Aaron Mirtes

[Note: With the film finally getting a UK release, here’s a reposting of my review of Painted in Blood from its US VOD debut]

Director Aaron Mirtes has been slowly plying his trade in the horror genre, making five feature films between 2017 and 2020 one of which, 2019’s American Hunt, was one of the best genre films released that year. Now Mirtes is back with his latest, Painted in Blood and, I’ll be frank, the press materials put me on the wrong foot from the get-go. You see Mirtes has plied his trade on numerous films, most of which you’d consider decent genre fare. From the highs of the aforementioned American Hunt and sci-fi thriller The Alpha Test to more derivative fare like Clowntergeist and Curse of the Nun, Mirtes has crafted a solid resume.

But now he apparently wants to turn his back on more exploitative fare...

‘The Alpha Test’ Review

Stars: Mack Bayda, Brad Belemjian, David Ditmore, Rae Hunt, Bella Martin, Alice Raver, Wynn Reichert, Deborah Seidel | Written and Directed by Aaron Mirtes

Written and directed (and more) by Aaron Mirtes, the man behind last years brilliant American Hunt, The Alpha Test is a thrilling science fiction flick that tells the story of a family who inflict abuse upon their home assistant, an AI who turns out to be way more intelligent than they expected.

It’s one of those fucked up scenarios that works so well as the premise for a horror sci-if movie. A home assistant, something purchased to make life more simple, just happens to have the ability to think and learn. We live in a world where things are no longer merely saved to a disc or drive, but to that invisible technological cloud, and so these things that this assistant learns are stored to the...

‘American Hunt’ Review
Stars: Brad Belemjian, David Ditmore, Lacy Hartselle, Taylor Novak, Cris Ruiz, Allison Shrum | Written and Directed by Aaron Mirtes

A few months back there was some controversy in the horror community when, succumbing to political pressure, Blumhouse cancelled the release of their production The Hunt – which was, essentially, yet another hunting humans film a lal The Most Dangerous Game. Yet whilst Blumhouse cancelled their release, High Octane Pictures went ahead and released American Hunt, a film that features the same hunting humans motif but has less political inclinations.

Of course that’s not to say this film doesn’t have anything to say on the state of society, in fact it says a lot about the divide be the haves and have-nots, the rich and the poor, it’s just that American Hunt can be swept under the carpet by mainstream horror outlets as another low budget direct to market title or,...

American Hunt Trailer Slides in to Replace Blumhouse's Canceled The Hunt
High Octane Pictures is trying to capitalize on Blumhouse's canceled and very controversial thriller The Hunt with the similar sounding American Hunt. The first trailer arrives with the promise that this is 'the most controversial horror release of 2019'. Whether or not that really is the case, if you were waiting for and disappointed by the disappearance of The Hunt this past fall, then you might want to check out American Hunt as a consolation prize. It does have a pretty cool poster if nothing else.

'Hunt or Be Hunted'. That's the tagline of American Hunt, which may trick folks into thinking they are watching the canceled Blumhouse thriller The Hunt. But audiences are pretty suave these days, and right of the bat, the absence of Emma Roberts and Hillary Swank are going to trigger some bells in the back of the head.

Having not seen The Hunt, who's...

‘Clowntergeist’ VOD Review
Stars: Brittany Belland, Monica Baker, Aaron Mirtes, Madeleine Heil, Eric Corbin, Burt Culver, Tom Seidman, Johnjay Fitih, Sean Patrick Murray | Written and Directed by Aaron Mirtes

You never know what you are going to get when you take a chance with a low budget movie, but with a title like Clowntergeist there is a good chance that this would be anything but boring…

Emma (Brittany Belland) is a college student who suffers from coulrophobia (fear of clowns) to the extent that even a clown picture on a T-shirt or a clown themed ice lolly in the ice cream shop which she works, strikes fear into her. If suffering mercilessly with a crippling fear of clowns wasn’t bad enough, things soon get worse when she realises that a possessed killer called Ribcage the Clown is on a killing spree throughout the town.

The killer delivers a red balloon to his potential victims,...

Clowntergeist (2017)
As if clowns weren't creepy enough, feast your eyes on Clowntergeist.

The horror flick is being billed as It meets Poltergeist — and judging from the first trailer, that's about right.

Aaron Mirtes' film tells the story of Emma (Brittany Belland), a college student with a phobia of clowns who is forced to confront that fear when a demonic clown terrorizes her town.

The killer clown leaves balloons with the date and time of his victims' deaths, and after receiving a balloon of her own, Emma learns she has just two days to live before the not-so-jolly clown takes her life.
