Roadside Attractions has partnered with Gravitas Ventures to acquire U.S. distribution rights to Dakota Johnson and Casey Affleck’s “The Friend,” which premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.

The heartfelt true story is based on Matthew Teague’s award-winning autobiographical essay published in Esquire Magazine.

“The Friend” tells the story of Nicole (Johnson) and Teague (Affleck), who, after receiving life-altering news, find unexpected support from their best friend, Dane (Jason Segel), who puts his own life on hold and moves into their family home, bringing an impact much greater — and more profound — than anyone could have imagined.

Roadside Attractions and Gravitas Ventures are teaming on the U.S. distribution The Friend, the Gabriela Cowperthwaite-directed drama starring Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson and Casey Affleck that world premiered at Toronto. The pic is based on Matthew Teague’s autobiographical essay published in Esquire. The companies are now eyeing a fall 2020 theatrical release.

It marks the second tie-up of Roadside and Gravitas Ventures; the two are teaming on The Secret: Dare to Dream, starring Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas, which bows in April. It’s hard to find the right tone when telling a terminal illness tale. When first introduced to Unforgettable’s chief villain Tessa, played by Katherine Heigl, she seems to have been styled to look like Lucius Malfoy’s unhinged sister. She’s brushing her hair in the mirror, appearing like a Disney villain, and it’s at this point we realise exactly what’s in store, as this early sequence is tonally in line with what transpires; an overtly melodramatic, televisual endeavour that harks back to classic b-movie thrillers of the 90s.

Julia Banks (Rosario Dawson) is overcoming a dark chapter in her life, which saw her ex-partner jailed for domestic abuse, and when we first meet here she’s sat in a police interrogation room, for Michael has been found dead, in her house – and accordingly to the law enforcement, she had reconnected with him as soon as his restraining order was up. For how long must misguided romantic thrillers extinguish perverse genre passions? The Boy Next Door set a recent bar for camp-tastic obsessing and killing in the name of love, one that movies like Unforgettable limbo under in the full upright position. Director Denise Di Novi pits ex-wife against bride-to-be, but fumbles tone like a nervous virgin unclasping his or her first bra. Katherine Heigl is less Psycho Stepford Barbie and more Bride Of Frankenstein – in that she emotes the villainy of a dead corpse. When going the route of fake online profiles and orgasm by identity theft, why sell insanity short? At the very least, don’t serve up such easy puns with a title like Unforgettable – which, unsurprisingly, is pretty damn forgettable.

Back in January, we reported on Katherine Heigl’s trip down the psychotic women road in the upcoming Unforgettable alongside Rosario Dawson and we can now share with you the final trailer for the thriller before its April 21st release.

The release of this film hasn’t exactly been shouted from the rooftops and we have a couple of ideas why. It probably isn’t very good, but mostly because there could very well be yet another backlash from hardcore feminists and women’s groups for the depiction of a woman going all fatal attraction bonkers on her ex-husband’s new lady friend. It’s a storyline which has seen Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl fake her own death in order to get her own back on her cheating husband and Ali Larter in Obsessed drugging Idris Elba in order to rape him.
