Considering that the Korean movie industry is facing intense problems, with the majority of titles of quality actually being shorts lately, the programmers of Bifan opted for the ideal solution. They picked a number of shorts for their program and invested heavily on Japanese movies, whose industry seem to be in a rather good place lately. The result was definitely a success, with a number of titles truly standing out (we will definitely include many in our Best Of lists). The tribute to Professor Manabu was another good idea in an all around very accomplished program. “Necrophilia”, “Mad Mask” and “New Group” were some of the titles that stood out, in a program, though, with many good moments.

Following the excellent “Best Wishes to All,” Yuta Shimotsu once again blends horror with biting social commentary, this time targeting the mindless conformity deeply rooted in Japanese society.
New Group is screening at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival
The story revolves around two high school students, Ai (“I”) and Yu (“You”), a symbolic parallel that is hard to miss. Ai is an introverted, ordinary girl burdened with family troubles. Ai becomes intrigued by him, but his emotional distance initially causes tension between them.

A lot of anime series have trouble establishing their identity at first. In a space dominated by iconic series like Dragon Ball, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, and Chainsaw Man, it can be hard for any new series to stand apart from its contemporaries. Many anime enthusiasts will drop a series if it doesn't grab them by the first three episodes, especially with the inundation of seasonal releases available on platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll. However, there are plenty of instances where this patience is rewarded.
Despite having some rocky beginnings, some anime improved in its second half. For seasonal releases, this change in quality can occur anytime after the first three episodes. But for many older anime, this can happen as far into the series as the second or third season and is at its apex during its finale. Seeing that payoff is exactly what makes these series so near and dear to many fans.

Based on the beloved manga series of the same name, Golden Kamuy introduced Satoru Noda’s memorable characters and action-packed tale to the silver screen. Director Shigeaki Kubo faced the challenge of adapting over a dozen manga volumes into a feature-length film while staying faithful to the source material.
He succeeded in large part thanks to expansively showcasing what makes Golden Kamuy such an engrossing story—the perfect balance of brutality and humor, education and adventure.
From its opening scenes of warfare’s harsh realities to its character-driven quest for gold and justice, Golden Kamuy immersed viewers in late 19th-century Hokkaido. Lead by Kento Yamazaki’s gritty yet sympathetic Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto and Anna Yamada’s headstrong Ainu guide Asirpa, characters both familiar and new leapt from the page with depth and dimension.
Fierce battles against men and nature alike thrilled, and tensions between factions vying for the treasure kept mysteries swirling.

Some anime start strong with a good plot and substantial character development. However, it happens more than often that an anime, especially a romance series, holds a lot of potential but fails to make it work out in the end. Although the essence of love stories is in experiencing the emotion and the depth of the characters desperation for one another, the importance of closure cannot be overemphasized. Its so important for a romance to find its footing in the end, because an inconclusive love story often lacks feel-good vibes and connectivity.
Its incredibly crucial for a good romance anime to stick the landing and offer fans a satisfactory end so that all the dilemma and the drama they saw throughout the series makes sense. A romance without a course of action or direction radiates vagueness. Thats why fans should be treated to romance anime that offer a lesson or...

To the Ainu people, indigenous people from the cold northern island of Hokkaido in Japan, God lives in everything. Kamuy, as they call these spirits, reside in animals, natural phenomena, and even human inventions. All of these have the capacity to be just as evil as they can be good. Satoru Noda's Golden Kamuy manga chronicles the good and the bad of a gold rush through the icy mountains of Hokkaido, as the Kamuy of the shiny metal brings out the truth in people, for better and worse.
After gathering a massive following since its anime adaptation, the divisive Golden Kamuy franchise now has a full-length feature film that takes advantage of the bigger budget and picturesque locales. Produced by Credeus and currently streaming on Netflix, the live-action movie adapts the early chapters of the series, bringing some of...

The series finale of The Dangers In My Heart subtly subverts romance tropes to incredible effect. The build-up to the confession is crucial in understanding the impactful final episode's strategy. The kiss at the end perfectly encapsulates Yamada and Ichikawa's unique relationship dynamic.
The overall delivery of The Dangers In My Heart's series finale on Hidive best encapsulates how the two-season anime subtly subverted the whole romance genre as a whole. On the surface, viewers might think that what they're seeing is something that's already been said and done, but, upon closer inspection, it is truly much more nuanced than originally believed. There's a reason why Japanese viewers voted it number one in Ranked.net's "2024 Winter Anime Evaluation."

To many viewers, anime has had a rough year of it. While the number of titles being released per season seems to be perpetually rising, that doesn’t always mean the quality of anime rises with it -- especially as the industry continues to be saturated with very genre-specific shows that tend to feel largely indistinguishable from one another in the long term.
However, that doesn’t mean 2023 has been devoid of solid anime content -- far from it. Although some individual seasons have perhaps lacked that one major show that made fans and critics alike sit up and take notice, the year has nonetheless delivered several standout series, inspiring plenty of audience conversation and industry buzz in the process. The following are Cbr's Anime News team's top picks of this caliber, all of which needed to air sometime during the year and complete their season runs by the end...

Takeshi Fukunaga has proven himself to be one of Japan's most exciting directors in recent years, receiving accolades for both “Out of My Hand” (2015) and “Ainu Mosir” (2020). His latest project, “Mountain Woman”, marks the director's first-period piece, as he takes us back to 18th-century Tohoku. A tale of famine, strife, and survival, the film is a sensitive and uncompromising meditation on finding oneness and liberation.

In a rural village in feudal Japan, a poor harvest has yielded a dire famine. Rin (Anna Yamada) and her family are at the bottom of the food chain, outcast by their fellow villagers on account of a past crime. When tensions come to a head, and Rin's father, Ihei (Masatoshi Nagase), finds himself in trouble, she is driven away from the village and into the nearby Mount Hayachine, a place to which the spirits of the dead are said to ascend.
