Latto and Quavo Enter Janelle Monáe’s Age of Pleasure on ‘Champagne Shit’ Remix
Image
Janelle Monáe throws a party for Atlanta on the remix of “Champagne Shit” from her latest album, The Age of Pleasure. As a teenager, the Kansas-native began building her Wondaland empire after relocating to the Georgia hotspot and meeting collaborators like Chuck Lightning and Nate Wonder, who produced the single. When Latto hops on the track, it’s with the same drive of coming into her artistry in the same entertainment hub, and an additional assist from Quavo puts the city on the ultimate pedestal.

“Bring some models and bring...

Janelle Monaé Gets Wet and Wild in ‘Waterslide’ Video
Image
Janelle Monaé is making more waves with the release of the second music video from her latest album The Age of Pleasure. She and director Alan Ferguson (who also worked on “Lipstick Lover,” Solange’s “Cranes in the Sky” and Lizzo’s “Good as Hell”) collaborated to bring “Waterslide” to life.

Like “Lipstick Lover,” the video for “Waterslide” is marked by vintage flower-power style and colorful, grainy shots. In the clip, Janelle and a crew party and perform — with her musical collaborator Nate Wonder on the drums — at a lush,...

Janelle Monáe Is Back From the Future and Ready to Play
Image
Janelle Monáe slides down the front zipper on her onesie, slings the suit down her back, and wiggles her bare ass toward about 20 of her dear friends.

It’s game night at Wondaland West, the homey Los Angeles campus where Janelle works and communes, complete with a studio, living quarters, and an immaculate teal pool nestled within a grove of tropical flora. Janelle’s butt makes its appearance via Consequences, a game she requested we play. Her friends Stephanie and Tree invented it when they were visiting Janelle in Greece...

Steven Knight Says He Hopes ‘Peaky Blinders’ Stage Show Will Travel To New York And Boston
Image
Steven Knight has said he hopes Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, the dance theatre spin-off of his hit TV show, will travel stateside after it closes on the stage in Birmingham, England.

“After it closes in the UK in Birmingham we’re hoping it moves onto New York and then Boston because the show has massive international appeal, so I think this one can travel,” Knight told the BBC’s Radio 4 on Tuesday morning.

The stage show opened earlier this month in Birmingham, the English city where the original TV show is set. Speaking with Radio 4, Knight said he doesn’t believe the show could have started life in any other city.

“Birmingham has been a big, proud city for hundreds of years. I think there’s been a gap in its media image and presence. And I hope Peaky is the first of many things that will give the city an identity,...

Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland Partners With SeriesFest On Latest Edition Of Its Episodic Screenwriting Contest, Winner Will Secure Development Opportunity
Image
Exclusive: Janelle Monáe and her Wondaland Pictures have partnered with the non-profit SeriesFest on the ninth season of Storytellers, its Script Writing Competition spotlighting female-focused stories within the episodic arena. The winner of the competition, to which submissions are now open via SeriesFest’s website, will earn the opportunity to develop their winning project with Wondaland. SeriesFest also today announced that Season 9 of its Independent Pilot, Digital Shorts, and Pilots in Progress Competitions have opened for submissions, along with its Collegiate Spotlight.

The Wondaland team is looking, by way of the episodic competition, for stories that feel disruptive, sticky, and buzzy; stories that are elevated and fun, left of center and culturally relevant, highlighting compelling characters from marginalized points of view. The organization sees a pressing need to tell stories that center on Black and Queer people, and that explore race, class and gender in fresh ways — stories that shift...

‘Peaky Blinders’ Film To Shoot At Writer Steven Knight’s Digbeth Studios: “It’s Like Coming Home”; Dance Theater Spin-Off Sets Cast
Image
The long-gestating Peaky Blinders feature film spin-off is to film at writer Steven Knight’s studios in Birmingham.

Speaking to British radio station Heart FM, Knight also confirmed he was close to completing the script for the film, which will follow on from the final sixth season that dropped earlier this year. The film has long been in the works, and shooting should begin “within 18 months,” he added, which is in line with previous estimations.

“We’re going to shoot it at the studios in Digbeth, and on location in Digbeth in Birmingham,” he said this morning. “Digbeth and Small Heath [are] where the Peaky Blinders actually roamed, so it’s like Peaky’s coming home.”

Knight confirmed the show, which stars the likes of Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson and Tom Hardy, will see many of the Caryn Mandabach-produced series’ cast return, but added he was planning for “some new...

Janelle Monáe in Antebellum (2020)
Antebellum Review: Janelle Monáe Deserves Better
Janelle Monáe in Antebellum (2020)
Antebellum is the debut feature-length film by writer/director duo Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz. In the film, they aim to explore what happens when the past, present, and future collide in a time where activism against injustice is prevalent. And it comes from one of the producers of the successful thriller, Get Out, which seems to be a regular announcement made among horror and thriller films these days. When you see those words pop up on the screen, expect a movie with a strong social message. It’s like woke cinema is its own genre now.

But a film that focuses on beating its themes to death is rarely entertaining, and such is the case with Antebellum, an aimless movie with no purpose other than shock value. What’s the purpose of displaying such overt brutality without reprieve? Does the film need to revel in disturbing imagery to tell us something we already know?...

Disney are well known, in recent years especially, for their live-action (and I use that term loosely) remakes of classic animated films from their catalogue. We’ve seen Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, Dumbo, Cinderella and others hit cinemas in recent years to mixed results, and now, with the debut of their streaming platform Disney Plus, we have seen another added to the list, Lady and the Tramp. Now, I’m a fan of the original 1955 animated classic. It’s cute, iconic and beautifully animated, a real smash hit from Disney history. I was curious when I heard about this live action remake, and when we finally signed up to Disney Plus when it landed here in the UK,...
