Matthew Goode Overcame His Nerves Working with Hero Anthony Hopkins
Image
From director Matthew Brown, who co-wrote the script with playwright Mark St. Germain (adapting his own stage play), Freud’s Last Session tells a fictional tale about what a meeting of the minds might have been like between Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins), the father of psychoanalysis, and author C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode), at a time when war was raging around them. The two men clash and challenge each other as they debate their views, but their mutual respect allows them to listen and understand their different beliefs about life, death, love, faith and science in a way we could all learn from.

Image
Two Indian films Salaar Part 1 – Ceasefire and Dunki buoyed the North American box office on a relatively quiet holiday weekend as Searchlight Pictures’ All Of Us Strangers had a solid per-screen openings and Poor Things a nice expansion.

From Tollywood to Bollywood, this was a one-two-punch illustrating the key role of Indian films at the U.S. box office, especially this weekend as Christmas shopping and Christmas Eve slowed theater traffic.

Telugu film Salaar Part 1 – Ceasefire opened at $5.48 million on 802 screens to a no. 5 spot in North America. Distributed in the U.S. by Moksha Movies and Pathyangira Cinemas. The action pic directed by Prashanth Neel stars Prabhas, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, Jagapathi Babu.

And Dunki from Yas Raj Films, starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Raju Hirani, grossed an estimated $3.59 million on 686 screens for the no. ten spot. The estimate through Sunday is $4.8 million.

Freud's Last Session Star Matthew Goode and Director Matthew Brown Interview
Image
Freud's Last Session, adapted from the play by Mark St. Germain, posits a fictional 1939 meeting between the renowned psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and author C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) in London shortly after Germany invaded Poland. Freud (Anthony Hopkins), dying of oral cancer, wanted to meet the Oxford professor famed for his religious beliefs. Freud was an unabashed atheist who mocked the concept of God as pure fiction manifested by foolish humans. Freud debates a nervous Lewis as England prepares for war and his obsessed daughter, Anna (Liv Lisa Fries), a prominent academic in the study of child psychology, desperately searches for morphine to please him.

Matthew Goode and director/co-writer Matthew Brown (The Man Who Knew Infinity) discuss working with an acting legend while portraying notable 20th century figures. Goode "didn't know a huge amount about this period of his life [but] shaped" his performance from Narnia and Christian author C.

‘Freud’s Last Session’ Director Matthew Brown Says It Took Two Tries To Get Anthony Hopkins To Agree To Play Sigmund Freud – Contenders Film L.A.
Image
An imagined conversation between two eminent historical figures who may or may not have ever met — nobody seems to know — forms the heart of Freud’s Last Session, an intellectual fable from Sony Pictures Classics that grew out of a play and, before that, a book and an Ivy League seminar.

Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins plays the inventor of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, opposite Matthew Goode as the celebrated author and theologian C.S. Lewis in a cerebral clash of titans. But as co-writer and director Matthew Brown said on Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles panel, the movie version as he envisioned it almost didn’t happen.

“I mean you always dream that you would have an actor like Hopkins say he would do the role,” Brown said. “And we did try once and we didn’t get very far. And then we did some more work on the script and tried again.

Post-afm, Deals Have Yet to Trickle in as Indie Industry Awaits End of SAG-AFTRA Strike
Image
A few days after AFM wrapped in Santa Monica, the dearth of substantial deals trickling in is pointing to a weakened film sales market which is grappling with structural changes and the reverberations of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Global industry players came into the AFM with reasonable hopes of dealmaking after a quiet Toronto festival, even if many packages were held back due to the strike. Yet, the main talking point of this AFM came down to the dysfunctional logistics of the event which was held for the first time at the Meridien Delfina hotel instead of the beachfront Loews.

“The logistics of AFM were more noisy than the actual market of AFM,” admits Scott Shooman, who was named head of film earlier this year at AMC Networks, a portfolio that encompasses IFC Films, Rlje Films and the streaming service Shudder.

Dylan Leiner, the senior EVP of acquisitions and production at Sony Pictures Classics,...
