Directors like Steven Soderbergh and Tomas Alfredson have proven they can make great horror movies, but they haven't returned to the genre. Despite their success in horror, some directors, like Jonathan Demme and Kathryn Bigelow, have never made another horror movie. While there are many directors known for making horror movies, there are others who have only visited this genre once, even though they proved they can make great horror movies. The horror genre is a tricky one as making a movie that perfectly balances good stories, well-written characters, and scares is not easy. Many directors dedicate their entire careers to the horror genre, bringing both great and not-so-good movies, while others go back and forth between horror and other genres, giving some balance to their filmographies.

Amazon Studios’ A Transparent Musical is aiming for Broadway in 2024.

This comes after the show premiered at Center Theatre Group’s Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles for a month-long run starting in May 2023. The musical, based on the Transparent television series, is the first stage production from Amazon Studios.

The production has partnered with Eva Price, producer of & Juliet and Oklahoma!, as the musical aims for Broadway.

“Transparent remains an incredibly impactful series with salient representation for the Lgbtqia+ community,” said Nick Pepper, head of US SVOD Wholly Owned Development, Amazon Studios. “This is the ideal series and characters to bring from series to stage, and we are thrilled to partner with Tony-winning Broadway Producer Eva Price. Following its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, “A Transparent Musical” is heading to Broadway. The stage production will begin its run in 2024.

The musical, which is based on the Amazon Prime Video series “Transparent,” ran from May 23 to June 25 ahead of Pride Month. According to Center Theatre Group (Ctg), which co-produced the show along with Amazon Studios, the musical brought the the highest proportion of audience members under the age of 40 of any Taper production, especially among Gen Z.

The musical was written by Mj Kaufman and Joey Soloway, who created the award-winning and groundbreaking Prime Video original. Music and lyrics were written by Faith Soloway with choreography by James Alsop. Tina Landau served as the production’s director. The Tony-winning Eva Price will produce the show for its Broadway run.

“A Transparent Musical” is heading to New York and Broadway. The show, the first stage play from Amazon Studios, premiered in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum in May — becoming the last show at the Taper for now, as Center Theater Group has canceled all shows at the stage following the close of “A Transparent Musical” on June 25.

But whereas the Mark Taper is on hold, “A Transparent Musical” has big things in store. According to Amazon, the show’s producers “intend to bring the show to Broadway sometime in 2024.” The musical, or course, is based on Amazon Prime Video’s Emmy-winning series “Transparent,” created by Joey Soloway, who also wrote the book to the stage musical with Mj Kaufman. It's looking like the story will continue after the events of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Deadline reports that the director of the film, Steven Caple Jr., is currently in talks to direct a sequel to the movie for Paramount Pictures. Mather Zickel (Masters of Sex) has booked a recurring role opposite Kevin James on Netflix comedy The Crew, starring and executive produced by The King of Queens alum. Written by Jeff Lowell, The Crew is set in a Nascar garage and stars James as the crew chief. When the owner steps down and passes the team off to his daughter, James finds himself at odds with the tech-reliant millennials she starts bringing in to modernize the team. Zickel will play Beth’s (Sarah Stiles) boyfriend Frank. Zickel is known for his work on series such as Masters of Sex, House of Lies and most recently I Love You America with Sarah Silverman. He is repped by The Rosenzweig Group, Abrams Artists Agency and attorney Lev Ginsburg.

We’ve unearthed the running order of the 2019 Tony Awards hosted by James Corden on CBS on Sunday, June 9. Over the course of upwards of three-and-half-hours, winners will be announced in 26 competitive categories. Below is the presentation order for the 73rd annual Tonys.

The eight design Tonys will be handed out in the half hour before the show goes live at 8 p.m. Et as will the award for Best Orchestrations. Those winners will be showcased throughout the telecast, with inserts of their acceptance speeches.

As usual, the first award on the broadcast will be one of the featured acting races (this year it is on the musical side of the aisle) while the show closes with a big one, Best Musical. In between, the winners of the other 15 Tonys races will be revealed as detailed in the presentation order below.

Thirty-four shows were eligible for the 73rd annual Tony Awards. A whopping two dozen of these reaped at least one bid across the 26 Tonys categories when the complete list of nominations was announced on April 30 by two-time Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth and three-time nominee Brandon Victor Dixon. While the nominations were determined by 48 theater professionals, the winners were decided by 831 members of the Broadway community.

While the Drama Desk Awards nominate a slew of off-Broadway fare, the winners invariably come from Broadway. That was once again the case on Sunday when all but one of the 16 champs in the musical races were Broadway productions while it was 8 of 12 on the play side.

This love of all things Broadway even extended to “Hadestown,” which was only in contention for new elements such as cast members after having contended here previously for it Off-Broadway run. It won four awards: Director (Rachel Chavkin), Featured Actor in a Musical (Andre De Shields), Lighting Design, and Sound Design.

One of its main rivals for Best Musical at the Tony Awards is “Tootsie,” which claimed victories for Best Actor (Santino Fontana), Book, Music, and Lyrics. But it was another contender, “The Prom,” that swooped in and claimed Best Musical despite losing all of its other bids.

The winners for the 64th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced Sunday night with Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman winning for Outstanding Play and The Prom taking home the trophy for Outstanding Musical.

Other big winners for the night included The Waverly Gallery and Fidder on the Roof winning for Outstanding Revival of a Play and Outstanding Revival of a Musical respectively. Dance Nation received a special Ensemble Award while Montana Levi Blanco was honored with the Sam Norkin Award.

The ceremony was hosted by Michael Urie and took place at at The Town Hall in Manhattan. The evening included performances by Drama Desk nominee George Salazar (Be More Chill) who was accompanied by composer/lyricist and Drama Desk nominee Joe Iconis. Other performers included Drama Desk nominees Stacey Sargeant and Andrew R. Butler (Rags Parkland) and Drama Desk and Tony®Award winner Lillias White who sang the In Memoriam.

Tootsie is bringing audiences to their feet every night at the Marquis Theatre, and its partly because of the extraordinary talents of its Tony-nominated stars. Santino Fontana, Lilli Cooper, Sarah Stiles and Andy Grotelueschen have all earned nods for their hysterical performances in the 11-time Tony-nominated hit. All four of them have been a part of the production since it opened in Chicago last year, and as they all attest, life is still far from boring at Tootsie.

Broadway’s Tootsie musical is hitting the road and going global: In addition to a just-announced national North American tour, producers confirmed plans for London, Australia and a Japanese-language production to premiere in Tokyo.

The North American tour will kick off at Shea’s Buffalo Theater in Buffalo, New York in fall 2020, announced Tootsie lead producers Scott Sanders and Carol Fineman. Casting, dates and additional tour cities will be announced later.

A planned London production will hit the West End in 2021, with Scott Sanders Productions and Fineman partnering with Michael Harrison and David Ian. A separate Australian production, in partnership with Benjamin Lowy Productions, also will tour New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The Japanese-language production, produced by Toho Co., Ltd., will debut in Tokyo and tour to several other major cities across Japan. Timing will be announced in the coming months.

Exclusive: Isaac Keys has been promoted to series regular and Michaela Watkins (Casual) and Seychelle Gabriel (Sleepy Hollow) have been tapped for recurring roles on the upcoming third season of Epix’s Get Shorty, from MGM Television. Production is underway in Vancouver for premiere this fall on Epix.

Key has recurred as Ed since the first season of the series, starring Chris O’Dowd and Ray Romano, appearing in a total of 18 episodes. Ed is Amara’s (Lidia Porto) bodyguard and a top lieutenant in her gang. He’s intimidating and built like a linebacker, but is intelligent and has a quiet confidence and dignity about him. Ed may not seem important, but he is perhaps the person Amara trusts most.

Get Shorty is based in part on Elmore Leonard’s 1990 bestselling novel — which also spawned Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1995 feature — and created for television by Davey Holmes. The series follows Miles Daly (O’Dowd), muscle for a Nevada crime ring who tries to become a movie producer in Hollywood with the help of a washed-up producer, Rick Moreweather (Romano), as a means to leave his criminal past behind.

In season two, Miles (O’Dowd) struggled to reconcile his ambitions as a filmmaker and a family man with his skill set as a career criminal. His progress in Hollywood is jeopardized when his washed-up producing partner Rick (Romano) agrees to wear a federal wire and begins a romantic relationship with dangerous crime boss Amara De Escalones (Porto).

Season three finds Miles embracing more ruthless methods as he settles scores in an attempt to continue climbing the Hollywood ladder.

Cast also includes series regulars Sean Bridgers, Carolyn Dodd, Goya Robles and Megan Stevenson. Steven Weber and Sarah Stiles are recurring guest stars.

Last week, Tootsie joined Broadway’s million dollar club – the choice group of productions that break the $1 million mark in weekly box office. Along with 11 Tony Award nominations and a star-making turn by lead actor Santino Fontana, the musical adaptation of the 1982 film comedy starring Dustin Hoffman can, in retrospect, seem like a no-brainer, the type of Broadway success that complainers complain about when they gripe over Hollywood pedigrees.

But take a closer look at To Kill A Mockingbird, Network, Pretty Woman, Beetlejuice and Tootsie, and what jumps out are their differences, specifically their varying approaches to their source material. Mockingbird went meta, Network post-modern high tech. Pretty Woman could have benefited from less respect for its celluloid self, Beetlejuice from more.

Of the musicals, Tootsie found the sweetest balance between old and new, all the more surprising given what would seem, at first consideration, a storyline and worldview best left to the ’80s.

The complete list of nominations for the 2019 Tony Awards has been released. This year, Hadestown leads all nominees with a total of 14 nominations including Best Musical. Other serious Tony contenders this year are Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations which is nominated for 12 awards and Tootsie which garnered 11 nominations.

In Plays, The Ferryman and To Kill a Mockingbird each received 9 nominations, tied for most in Plays and fourth overall. The Ferryman is up for Best Play, while Jeff Daniels is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his role in To Kill a Mockingbird.

The nominees were announced live today from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center by two-time Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth and Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon. Neuwirth garnered the Tony Award in 1986 for Best Featured Actress in a...
