Why NBC Canceled The Irrational After Two Seasons
Image
Jesse L. Martin is a treasure. I was incredibly fortunate to see him originate the role of Tom Collins on Broadway in the legendary 1996 production of "Rent" (after it transferred from its first home at the New York Theatre Workshop), and I walked out of that performance excited to see what he'd do next. That wound up being "Law & Order," where Martin put in 198 episodes of work as Detective Ed Green. This was a decade-long assignment that, for the most part, took him off the film and theater market. Given how extraordinarily well network television pays if you're a main cast member, you can't begrudge a working actor for prioritizing a regular paycheck.

As an occasional "Law & Order" viewer, Martin has only ever been terrific as Green. But as the years have passed, you can't help but get greedy as a viewer and wonder why he doesn't challenge himself more often.

Everyone Forgets The Flash Star Who Quit ‘Law & Order’ After 198 Episodes to Return to Broadway
Image
Initially becoming notable for his work on Broadway, especially in the role of Tom Collins in Rent, Jesse L. Martin later garnered recognition for Law & Order. Given his no-nonsense approach to the stint as Detective Ed Green, Martin, who was incorporated in the wake of Benjamin Bratt’s exit from the procedural drama, became a mainstay during his 10-year-long stint.

But despite his success in NYPD’s 27th Precinct, after a years-long commitment to the IP, the actor finally called it quits to go back to his roots.

Although Law & Order did propel Martin’s career to the next level, and The Flash star proved to be an immaculate replacement for Detective Rey Curtis, in season 18, the actor finally opted to call it quits.

Flash Star Tom Cavanaugh Joins FBI Season 7 in Major (& Surprising) Role
Image
Tom Cavanagh cemented himself as one of the key elements in The Flash’s success throughout its 9-season run. Now, the actor is making his way to the CBS procedural, FBI, as a major character’s spouse.

Per TV Line, Cavanagh has been cast as Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille’s husband, Phillip. Isobel Castille is played by Alana de la Garza, who is a crime procedural veteran, having appeared in four seasons of Law & Order as well as its spinoffs like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as CSI: Miamias Horatio Caine’s wife. Fans, and even some of the show’s cast, didn’t know that her character had a husband, so the casting news came as a big surprise to all.

Cavanagh spent nearly a decade playing a variety of roles on the most popular of The CW’s Arrowverse lineup. Really, they...

The following contains light spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 4, now streaming on The CW App.

Superman & Lois is perhaps the most consistently excellent DC Comics series ever on The CW, in large part because of its focus on Kal-El's family. The best Superman moments often didn't involve powers, but rather the scenes in which the Man of Steel faced the kind of problems everyone else does. One of the most unique and powerful things about Superman & Lois was how the series made Clark Kent a father for the first time in live-action. The Man of Steel is as close...

“We are the Flash” is Not the Most Annoying Line From The Flash- Grant Gustin’s CW Show Was Unbearable When It Came to This
Image
Grant Gustin’s The Flash ran for nine seasons before the creators decided to end the show for good. While the series is considered to be one of the best of its kind, fans couldn’t help but notice how some character lines often felt very cheesy. When it was put to discussion what the most annoying line was, fans could easily come to an agreement.

The show was presented in a lighter, whimsical tone that would often come across as overly simplistic and almost silly. However, the comedic lines in the show weren’t the most annoying for fans. It was often the serious moments that produced the worst dialogue.

Grant Gustin’s Regret: Fans Will Not Forgive CW For Butchering Best Storyline of Flash With an Awful Creative Decision
Image
The Flash television series was easily a massive fan favorite throughout the time it aired. Even after concluding its run and the Arrowverse as a whole with its ninth and final season, Grant Gustin continues to please fans as the best iteration of Barry Allen to date. But while the majority of the saga was praiseworthy, some parts weren’t, and the cast still regrets it.

While the adaptation was truly remarkable, there have been some storylines that would have better suited the lore had CW not decided to butcher them short. This, in particular, includes the “Flashpoint” event from the comics – something that was, rather perfectly, brought into live-action, but couldn’t stay long enough due to creative decisions as opposed to the cast’s wishes.

“The Green Arrow was a criminal”: Why Did Joe West Not Get the Same Treatment as Quentin Lance For Working With Grant Gustin’s Flash?
Image
Officers of the judicial system with a soft spot for our favorite superheroes will always hold a special place in our hearts. Two names that fall into this category are The Flash’s Joe West and Arrow’s Quentin Lance. Both officers stuck their necks out for Barry Allen (The Flash) and Oliver Queen (Green Arrow), two vigilantes in the Arrowverse, and helped them in their quests to bring justice to the world.

Unfortunately, getting tangled up in the twisted and morally grey world of vigilantes did not work out the same way for both characters. While Joe West was let off the hook, Quentin Lance faced a harsh punishment – a demotion despite having climbed the ranks to become the Captain of the Star City Police Department. Why the discrimination? Well, the answer is pretty simple, actually.

“We are the Flash”: Fans Wish Grant Gustin Never Dated His On Screen Crush Candice Patton in the First Place, Wanted to See Barry With 2 Other Stars Instead in The Flash
Image
In the high-speed world of Grant Gustin’s The Flash series, where meta-humans battle villainous foes and time travel often complicates relationships, love took on a different kind of velocity for audiences. Well, apparently, after Gustin’s Barry Allen ended up with Candice Patton’s Iris West, following their initial association in Season 3, fans expressed their disappointment in the pairing.

Despite being initially thrilled to see the duo begin their dating phase in The Flash Season 3, and even affectionately dubbing them “WestAllen”, fans’ preference took a wild detour. As the show sped toward its conclusion in 2023, the audience’s romantic inclinations shifted from Barry and Iris to his association with some unexpected characters like Caitlin Snow and Kara Danvers.

“It also hurts my heart a little bit”: The Flash Storyline That Felt Like ‘Torture’ for Grant Gustin Despite Being a Fan-Favorite Among Everyone

The Flash was one of the biggest superhero shows on The CW, and it’s no wonder why it ran for nine seasons – fans loved it so much, especially Grant Gustin’s portrayal of the Scarlet Speedster.

Over the course of nine years, the series tackled different storylines from the comics, but the most intriguing and even daunting part was Season 3’s Flashpoint. It also may have taken a toll on the cast members because it was so unusual from what they were used to.

“She was quite boring and 2 dimensional”: Grant Gustin’s CW Show Did Not Do Justice to One Member From Team Flash While Iris and Cisco Kept Getting Power-Ups
Image
When it comes to popular shows like The Flash, every fan’s two cents about characters can snowball into a lively debate! Ah, Grant Gustin’s portrayal of The Flash! It’s being lauded, applauded, and even critiqued. But let’s cut through the fluff and talk about the elephant in the room—criticism surrounding how characters like Caitlin Snow, played by Danielle Panabaker, were developed vis-à-vis the likes of Iris West and Cisco Ramon.

While the former often seemed to be running in circles, her journey as a vital member of Team Flash has been anything but mundane.

The Best Arrowverse Villain Identity Reveals, Ranked
Image
The Arrowverse is known for its big identity reveals that shocked fans all around the world. The Arrowverse became popular for many reasons, but it found a gold mine in telling mysterious and expansive stories that centered around masked villains. Utilizing cliffhangers and hanging story threads, the creators of the Arrowverse knew they had cracked the formula to ensure repeat viewers.

Early villains like Reverse Flash and Deathstroke made a strong impression early on, as they carved a path for new threats like Zoom and Prometheus to steal the show. All four villains had one thing in common, they all hid behind a mask and costume. Masked villains worked well until the Arrowverse moved on and tried to create different types of villains, like The Thinker and Damien Darkh, which disrupted the winning formula.

DC's Arrowverse has had countless great episodes across all of the shows, but not every episode is rewatchable in the same way as others. From satisfying full-circle moments to introducing the Arrowverse's lead heroes, fans have their reasons for revisiting certain episodes. Still, it's often due to big moments that are a joy to watch or contain a shocking twist that demands a rewatch.

The Arrowverse crossover episodes are natural to come back to, as they are all big episodes that were a huge deal at the time. Each crossover had a defining role in each show's season, but none had more of an effect than Crisis on Infinite Earths, which took up most of Arrow's final season. Also, key episodes like pilots, finales and premieres tend to pop up with some of the most memorable scenes.

The Irrational Season 2 Cast and Character Guide
The Irrational (2023)
Good news: NBC's The Irrational will return for Season 2 in the fall of 2024. Even better, most of the cast will be returning.

The Jesse L. Martin-led police procedural stands out in a sea of crime dramas because it focuses on a behavioral scientist who moonlights as an FBI consultant. It is fun, entertaining, and easy to follow.

We've got you covered if you're playing catch-up now that the season has ended.

Our The Irrational Season 2 cast and character guide covers everything you need to know about the characters before you begin this unique series.

How The Irrational Is Different From Other Shows

The Irrational is not purely a police procedural.

Since the main character is a behavioral scientist, neuroscientific principles often come into play when solving each case.

It's not quite as gimmicky as Elsbeth, where the lead detective's quirkiness is the backbone of the show, but it...

The Irrational Season 2: Everything We Know So Far
As many of our favorite television shows are receiving cancelation orders, from Station 19 to Blue Bloods to series that barely make it out of the gate, like Still Star-Crossed or Prodigal Son, it's refreshing to find shows with renewal orders.

It's rare to see new shows that offer something different when it seems like everything has been done, especially among all the remakes and reboots.

However, The Irrational managed to corner a vacant market we didn't even know existed.

Sure, it's a police procedural show.

But it also works in our love of pop psychology with a bit of personal drama to spice things up.

The Irrational cast is led by a mainstay of procedural crime television and supported by a collection of relatively unknown but talented actors. 10 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching The Flash After Its Impressive 9-Season Run
Image
The Flash's budget constraints affected the show's visual effects and fight scenes, hindering its overall quality and impact. The acting on The Flash was inconsistent throughout its nine-season run, although certain cast members consistently delivered strong performances. The reliance on speedster villains became repetitive and predictable, overlooking the potential of other compelling foes from the comics.

The Flash ran for nine seasons on The CW, and now that the Arrowverse series has ended, a rewatch of The Flash should bring along some harsh realizations. The DC Universe on TV, the Arrowverse, started in 2012 with Stephen Amell's Arrow. It was on that show that Grant Gustin debuted as Barry Allen, playing Barry before he got his powers over two episodes of Arrow's season 2 in 2013. The Flash season 1 premiere would come to screens in 2014, with Gustin cementing himself as one of the Arrowverse's faces, going on to star in nine...

Why The Flash TV Series Succeeded and the Dceu Movie Did Not
Image
The Flash movie is now streaming on Max a little over two months after its theatrical release. The quick turnaround from cinematic release to home viewing is an attempt by the studio to recoup some of the losses from what is widely considered a colossal failure. Conversely, the TV series The Flash was a small screen success, having run for nine seasons on The CW. So, why did the series succeed where the movie did not?

It would be easy to blame the box office failure of 2023’s The Flash on its star’s legal and personal troubles. Ezra Miller, after all, is a divisive figure at best, which is why Warner Bros. focused much of the film’s marketing on Michael Keaton’s return as Batman. Still, early box office projections predicted a stronger opening weekend, indicating that audiences were excited to see a Flash movie if the story was good enough.

‘The Irrational’: Why Jesse L. Martin’s Return to NBC Is More Than a Whodunit

For a show about why people make bad decisions, NBC has made the best one by bringing Jesse L. Martin back to the network. Having just wrapped his run as The Flash’s dutiful father figure Det. Joe West, the fan favorite who spent nine seasons as Law & Order’s NYPD detective Ed Green is returning to the procedural game, and the crafty new drama The Irrational finally lets Martin shine as a leading man. He “is such a talented actor and exudes an easy charm,” raves NBC’s president of scripted content Lisa Katz. “We have always wanted to bring Jesse back to NBC and were just waiting for the right vehicle and the right time.” “It feels really great to be back on NBC after all these years,” the chronically good-natured Martin said while filming behind-the-scenes content for the crime thriller, before the actors’ strike. “And the...

The Dcu's Metamorpho Also Played the Arrowverse's The Mist

In the wake of The Flash movie, fans are as excited as ever to learn about the new heroes and villains to come in the Dcu. Superman: Legacy has been doing most of the heavy lifting, with castings left, right and center. Apart from David Corsenswet as the new Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as the new Lois Lane, it's added a slew of Justice Leaguers, including Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.

Interestingly, Anthony Carrigan has been cast as Metamorpho. Fans would know him as Victor Zsasz from Gotham, as well as NoHo Hank from Barry. However, Carrigan first cut his teeth as a DC villain in the Arrowverse as The Flash's Kyle Nimbus, aka The Mist. Though Carrigan gave a flawless performance as the villain, he was still very underrated in the way he kept trying to take down Team Flash.

All the Characters Who Came Back for The Flash Series Finale
Image
The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 9, Episode 13, "A New World, Part Four: Finale," which aired May 24 on The CW.

The final season of The Flash on The CW wrapped up the story for the show's characters and the entire Arrowverse. This means that the entire final season was a bevy of guest appearances and cameos. Plenty of returning champs came back for the series finale, including villains and allies of Team Flash. After nine years and more than 100 episodes, it can be difficult to remember just who everyone is.

One of the most important returning characters was Rick Cosnett's Eddie Thawne, who came back for the final four episodes. Along with Iris's ex-fiancé, her daughter from the future Nora West-Allen, played by Jessica Parker Kennedy, is another holdover from the penultimate episode of The Flash. However, several other characters returned, many of them former Big Bad villains from past seasons.

Forget Oliver Queen, The Flash Season 9 Required Eddie Thawne
Image
The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 9, Episode 12, "A New World, Part Three: Changes," which debuted May 17 on The CW.

It would be a tragedy if The Flash didn't bring back important characters for its final season on The CW. While the most anticipated was Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen, perhaps the most important is Rick Cosnett's Eddie Thawne. As far as the characters are concerned, getting Eddie back (and then losing him to supervillainy) is emotionally devastating in the way the Green Arrow's return was triumphant.

Since sacrificing himself in Season 1, Cosnett has brought Eddie back to The Flash ten times, counting the series finale. Usually, it's a flashback or time-travel situation, sometimes he's a cosmic hallucination because, well, The Flash is a comic book show. This is the first time the Eddie Thawne comes back to the show. The one who sacrificed himself to save everyone...

As The Flash prepares to conclude its nine-season run, Barry revisits this traumatizing occasion once again in the first installment of its four-part series finale. While Barry has returned to this incident before, this time it gives him a sense of closure that has eluded him as he finds himself moving through time.

Nine months have passed since Oliver Queen returned to help Team Flash defeat Bloodwork, with Iris West ready to give birth to her and Barry’s daughter. While Iris is notified she is winning a Pulitzer Prize for her article on the Red Death -- as...

The Flash Season 9 Is Running Out Of Time To Explain 3 Mysteries
Image
Warning: The following contains Spoilers for The Flash season 9.Mysteries and unanswered questions abound as The Flash season 9 races towards the series finale. This is not that surprising, as the final season of a long-running television show is often devoted to tying up whatever loose ends remain among the series' subplots. The Flash is notable, however, in that all of its remaining mysteries are tied to new storylines introduced within the past year.

The unifying theme of The Flash season 9 has been change and how people adapt to it. From Joe West leaving Central City to Chester and Allegra finally realizing they belong together, every storyline in The Flash season 9 has centered around major life changes for the ensemble and the problems that come with failing to deal with them. However, despite the show resolving many long-running storylines, such as Barry and Iris preparing to become parents, there are still...

‘The Flash’ Season 9, Episode 7: Recap & Ending, Explained: Did Nia Get Her Dreamer Powers Back?
Image
As the final season of CW’s “The Flash” slowly approaches its last lap, fan-favorite characters are brought back into the series to provide their arcs with the gratifying ends they so deserve. Nia Nal, aka the Dreamer, possibly makes her final appearance in the Arrowverse with the episode “Wildest Dreams,” which is the last part of the ongoing interlude chapter of the ninth season of “The Flash,” and the character gets a befitting send off as she realizes her true worth as the generational hero. Previously, viewers also found Mark to be in distress as he processed Frost’s demise and his willingness to turn Khione, a third personality of Caitlin Snow, into the image of his deceased partner. This episode also sheds some light on that storyline as well.

Spoilers Ahead

What Happens In Episode 7 Of ‘The Flash’ Season 9?

The episode begins with Nia Nal, in her Dreamer costume,...

The Flash’s 150th Episode Proves the Show’s Future is in Good Hands

The following The Flash article contains spoilers through Season 7, Episode 17.

The Flash Season 7 Episode 17

Look, as much as it hurts my heart to admit it, The Flash Season 7 has frequently been a bumpy ride. Its storylines have run the gamut from the truly dreadful (anything involving the Forces of Nature) to the nonsensical (the inexplicable Joe West and Kristen Kramer team-up), with a few dollops of brilliance sprinkled throughout.

Therefore, it makes sense that some of us (read: me) were pretty nervous about what might happen in the show’s landmark 150th episode, which has been touted all season as a big, fanservice-filled deal, complete with the introduction of Jordan Fisher’s Bart Allen.

To be fair, “Heart of the Matter, Part 1” still struggles with some of the same problems that have plagued the rest of this season. No one would have noticed if such an important anniversary episode skipped...

The Flash Will Finally Face Off With [Spoiler] in Season 7, Ep Confirms
Image
After nearly a half-dozen fake-outs, The Flash will finally face off against a most formidable foe from the comics.

The CW’s No. 1 series first teased the introduction of the white-and-gold clad Godspeed during Season 5, when Barry and Iris’ daughter Nora, in the year 2049, bested the sinister speedster with a good amount of help from the imprisoned Eobard Thawne aka Reverse-Flash.

Nora Makes The Scene In The Flash Season 5 Premiere Photos
Having already treated us to a new trailer and promotional poster this month, it looks as though The CW aren’t through spoiling us with goodies pertaining to The Flash‘s fifth season. This time, they deliver with a heck of a lot of images taken from the premiere episode, which has been appropriately titled “Nora.”

Speaking of which, Barry and Iris’ daughter from the future features prominently in the gallery found below, proudly sporting her Xs costume in a variety of action shots. Personally, my favorite is the one where Jessica Parker Kennedy is seemingly recreating Jeff Goldblum’s infamous pose from the first Jurassic Park flick, but there’s a lot more to feast your eyes on as we wait for the saga to continue.

If we’re to learn any lesson from this slideshow, it’s that the story may pick up moments after last May’s finale,...

The Flash Season 4 Blu-Ray Release Date And Extras Revealed
Despite obviously not being the first TV series introduced to us by the Arrowverse, The Flash has consistently proven itself as a fan favorite and a ratings success for The CW. With each passing year, the show introduces us to a healthy amount of DC heroes and villains – both well known and obscure – while never shying away from crazy sci-fi action. Really, I’m impressed with what the visual effects team are able to achieve week in and week out.

This time around, it was refreshing to see Barry Allen do battle with someone who wasn’t yet another evil speedster. Cool as the previous big bads were, Clifford DeVoe Aka the Thinker will go down as being a great foil for Team Flash, having taken them to the intellectual limit like never before.

If you have the slightest idea of what I’m talking about, then you’ll want...

The Flash Recap: The Gravity of the Situation — Plus, Is [Spoiler] Leaving?
As The Flash returned from a month-long break, Barry benched a boisterous Ralph, Cisco at least cured Breacher’s allergies and Marlize celebrated Groundhog Day.

As great as it was to have the scarlet speedster back on our screens this week, it required buying into the premise that Ralph — having been through such a rewarding redemption arc at midseason — was back to being an insufferable goof. Alas, that is where we were, forcing Barry to grow increasingly frustrated with the elastic sidekick’s joke-joke-jokiness, and during the worst of times.

Eventually, after a couple of pep talks from Iris (who...

The Flash season 4 episode 11 review: The Elongated Knight Rises
Mike Cecchini Jan 24, 2018

The Flash delivers another patchy episode that fails to hit the spot. Spoilers ahead in our review...

4.11 The Elongated Knight Rises

Disclaimer: my local CW affiliate was having some ridiculous audio issues tonight, where chunks of the episode sounded like they were being broadcast from a very small and very busted Am radio in 1973. If I missed any details, this is why.

Anyway...

I...really don't know what to make of The Elongated Knight Rises. I wasn't a fan of The Trial Of The Flash and as long as Barry remains in prison, I feel like everything is a little bit tainted by the laziness of that particular episode. But this week was certainly, um, different.

I've run hot and cold on Hartley Sawyer's Ralph Dibny.

‘Legends of Tomorrow': Kid Flash Is Officially Joining the Waverider
It's been a long and messy road for Wally West on The Flash. He was just a simple street car racer, until his mother died and Joe West became aware that he had a son. Adopting him immediately into their family, as the Wests do, Wally became an odd-man-out at S.T.A.R. labs, and after Flashpoint, was given powers by Savitar via Alchemy, ones that led him to become the Fastest Man Alive. The show has since backtracked on that fact, reasserting Barry's speed dominance, which was a missed opportunity in a lot of …...

The Flash: Joe West Crosses a Major Line in Trial of the Flash
The Flash will return in 2018 with Barry on trial for murder, but it seems that he’s not the only one who’s ethics will be strained. In a new teaser for the midseason premiere, Joe West is revealed to be willing to plant fake evidence in order to exonerate his adopted son.

Boychoir Review
Late screenwriting guru Syd Field often wrote in his Bibles for wannabe film scribes that if the writer doesn’t grab the viewer in the first 10 minutes (or the first 10 pages), then there’s no reason to stay with the story. Often these introductory minutes indicate the kind of story we are about to see, and illuminate important aspects of the protagonist whose journey we will follow. If one judges Boychoir from its opening scenes, few would want to stick around to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

The film begins going steadily through a checklist of conventions for stories about a downtrodden young protagonist with prodigal talent. The first shot of the film is of Stet, played by newcomer Garrett Wareing, crouching behind a train as it rattles through a Texas town. (If one was looking for a more trite way to show that the main character...

Dustin Hoffman leads a ‘Boychoir’ in first trailer
Boyhood and Whiplash? That’s old news! This year, let’s combine them for Boychoir. The first trailer for the film, directed by François Girard, hit the web on Tuesday. It stars Dustin Hoffman, Kevin McHale, Kathy Bates, Eddie Izzard, Joe West, Josh Lucas, and Debra Winger. Wareing plays Stet (as in Stetson), an 11-year-old Texan who’s sent to “the premier boy choir school in the nation” after the death of his single mother. He immediately fails to fit in — he’s a poor kid with behavioral issues, in a fancy school full of fancy people — but his vocal talents capture the attention of the sour Carvelle (Hoffman).

Boychoir seems to be a more sedated version of Whiplash with Hoffman playing the teacher that will be pushing Stet past him limits to make him the best singer in the choir. Hoffman looks strong in the role, but the overall...
