The Mise En Scene Company has boarded worldwide sales on “Forelock,” a dark comedy toplined by David Krumholtz and Caleb Alexander Smith, with Smith making his solo directorial debut on the project.

Smith wrote and helmed the Los Angeles-set film, in which he stars as a wannabe fitness trainer whose resemblance to a major movie star attracts the attention of Krumholtz’s Hollywood Boulevard con artist character. The duo’s partnership spirals into criminal territory in what’s being billed as a satirical take on Hollywood dreams gone wrong.

For Krumholtz, the project represents his first starring vehicle following his acclaimed supporting turn in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” The versatile actor has built a reputation through collaborations with auteur filmmakers including the Coen Brothers and Seth Rogen, most recently earning praise for Rogen’s Emmy-nominated Apple TV+ series “The Studio.”

For his official directorial debut, Alex Garland found the on-set atmosphere of Ex Machina quite refreshing.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Garland and producer Andrew Macdonald looked back on their past work at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, including how Ex Machina kicked off Garland's filmmaking career a decade ago. "I never wanted to be a director," Garland confessed, explaining that his motive behind this career choice was "to stop directors from changing things and the only way to do that was by occupying that position [of director]." Nonetheless, he enjoyed the camaraderie that went into making his film, describing the cast as "young and very hard-working and very committed. We had a very friendly crew that believed in the project and was working as hard as they could. There was a good vibe, and everyone was pulling together. It was friendly."

Exclusive: David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) has signed on to star in Forelock, a dark comedy marking the solo feature directorial debut of Caleb Alexander Smith (NCIS).

The filmmaker also stars in the pic, which he scripted. Emily Swallow (The Mandalorian), Alimi Ballard (Queen of the South) and Chloe Farnworth (MaXXXine) round out the cast.

Forelock centers on a naive fitness enthusiast (Smith) seeking a fresh start in Los Angeles, watching as he collides with a Hollywood Boulevard grifter (Krumholtz) who exploits his uncanny resemblance to the world’s most famous superhero.

Pic is the first for Midnight Chimes, the film and TV production company founded last year by sports journalist and broadcaster Lindsay McCormick and Smith. McCormick is producing, with Russ Hammonds exec producing alongside Krumholtz. The film is co-financed by Midnight Chimes LLC, with production currently underway in Los Angeles.
