Y2K, the directorial debut of Saturday Night Live cast member Kyle Mooney, is part romcom, part tech-horror, and too unfocused to commit to either one. The turn-of-the-millennium throwback leans too heavily on nostalgia; it’s concerned far more with familiar products and pop-culture details than with how its characters might behave, especially in the face of practical, Frankensteinian tech monsters. Instead, the ensemble are left trying to navigate the movie’s scattershot tone — one that oscillates between comedy and melodrama without fully letting laughs or heartbreak land.

The movie’s flimsy set-ups are accompanied by disconnected pay-offs that emanate from nowhere. For instance, its third act pivots around a key cameo that would have worked like gangbusters had it even been mildly gestured towards. Instead, Y2K moves from scenario to scenario as though its post-apocalyptic saga were being improvised in the moment, further contributing to its haphazard tonal swings.

Rachel Zegler has had one of the quickest rises to fame of any Hollywood actor in her generation. Steven Spielberg plucked her from obscurity when he sent out an open casting call for his version of West Side Story. Playing Maria in the 2021 movie would be life-changing for Zegler who, in one role, could show off both her voice and acting chops. The role earned her a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Young Actor/Actress and a Golden Globe win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

Disney and Marvel haven't officially confirmed the series will be back, but showrunner Jac Schaeffer sure made it sound like more Agatha is on the way after that incredible season 1 ending and finale, via Marvel.

Alicia Silverstone has joined the cast for Yorgo Lanthimos' upcoming science fiction film, Bugonia.

Per Variety, Silverstone joins Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in Bugonia, which is described as an alien conspiracy film. Silverstone is best known for portraying Batgirl in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, as well as her breakout role as Cher in Amy Heckerling's Clueless. Silverstone has worked with Lanthimos previously on The Killing of a Sacred Deer, a thriller starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman There is no official word on who exactly Silverstone will be playing in the film. Bugonia will be Lanthimos' follow-up to this year's Kinds of Kindness, which also stars Stone and Plemons.

“Chucky” has been canceled after three seasons, Variety has learned.

The horror comedy series aired on both USA Network and Syfy. Season 3 aired in two parts — the first in October 2023 and the second between April and May 2024. According to sources, there had been discussions of bringing the show back for an abbreviated final season or even a wrap up film, but ultimately to no avail.

“I’m heartbroken over the news that ‘Chucky’ won’t be coming back for a fourth season, but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have,” series creator Don Mancini said in a statement. “I’d like to thank UCP/Syfy/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew (the best in the business), and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Y2K follows two high school juniors It's Jaeden Martell and Deadpool 2's Julian Dennison as they crash a New Years Eve party on the last night of 1999. Things go awry when the clock strikes midnight, and the duo find themselves fighting for their lives. The disaster horror comedy film also stars several recognizable faces, including Lachlan Watson (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Mason Gooding (Scream VI), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), rapper The Kid Laroi, and Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), with Mooney also appearing in a supporting role. IndieWire’s 2000s week continues in spirit with the highly-anticipated trailer for Kyle Mooney’s directorial debut “Y2K.”

The high school-set comedy stars Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison as a trio of teens who have to survive New Years 1999 as Y2K literally happens. The A24 film was announced in 2023, with Mason Gooding, Alicia Silverstone, Lachlan Watson, The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker, Eduardo Franco, Miles Robbins, Fred Hechinger, and Daniel Zolghadri rounding out the cast.

“SNL” alum Mooney directs from a script he cowrote with Evan Winter. Mooney exited the live comedy sketch series in May 2022, along with fellow cast members Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, and Aidy Bryant.

“Y2K” is produced by Jonah Hill under his Strong Baby productions, along with screenwriter Winter, Matt Dines, and Ali Goodwin. “The Bear” creator Christopher Storer is also producing under his American Light & Fixture banner.

Wētā Workshop handled the apocalyptic film’s design and practical effects.

Per the official logline: “On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.”

The trailer shows several homicidal machines in “Y2K,” including a Tamagotchi drilling a whole in a someone’s head, a VHS player hurling tapes at high school students, and a pink toy jeep lighting someone on fire.

“Y2K” marks “Saturday Night Live” veteran Kyle Mooney’s directorial debut. Mooney directed the sci-fi comedy from a script he co-wrote with Evan Winter, while Jonah Hill served as a producer on the film.
