Proof of Concept, an accelerator program supporting women, trans and nonbinary filmmakers founded by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, producer Coco Francini and noted researcher Dr. Stacy L. Smith, debuted the work of its inaugural class at a showcase on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.
“The showcase is a celebration of a cornucopia of new, wonderful points of view, and importantly, it’s a celebration of this vital step for these filmmakers,” said Blanchett. “From here, we know that these helmers can start shaping and remaking the industry.”
Blanchett appeared virtually, delivering her remarks from London, while Dr. Smith, Francini and Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria were on hand at Netflix’s Tudum Theater in Hollywood to celebrate with the filmmakers and some of their cast.

I lived through the uncertainty of Y2K and have vivid memories of the ordeal. The anxiety was real. People were convinced that the sky was falling. Thankfully, the sky did not fall. But what if it actually did? That’s the question the #1 movie on Max today posits. Y2K imagines an alternate New Year’s Eve 1999 where instead of business as usual, technology revolted.
That sounds like such a promising premise. You get a bit of (ultra-late) ‘90s nostalgia and a major cultural milestone reimagined with dire consequences. Unfortunately, the execution of this period piece is lacking. Many critics called attention to the film’s tonal inconsistencies and said that a lot of the jokes don’t quite land.
Here’s a bit more context on the setup for this A24 Horror thriller on Max:

Y2K, the directorial debut of Saturday Night Live cast member Kyle Mooney, is part romcom, part tech-horror, and too unfocused to commit to either one. The turn-of-the-millennium throwback leans too heavily on nostalgia; it’s concerned far more with familiar products and pop-culture details than with how its characters might behave, especially in the face of practical, Frankensteinian tech monsters. Instead, the ensemble are left trying to navigate the movie’s scattershot tone — one that oscillates between comedy and melodrama without fully letting laughs or heartbreak land.
The movie’s flimsy set-ups are accompanied by disconnected pay-offs that emanate from nowhere. For instance, its third act pivots around a key cameo that would have worked like gangbusters had it even been mildly gestured towards. Instead, Y2K moves from scenario to scenario as though its post-apocalyptic saga were being improvised in the moment, further contributing to its haphazard tonal swings.

Rachel Zegler has had one of the quickest rises to fame of any Hollywood actor in her generation. Steven Spielberg plucked her from obscurity when he sent out an open casting call for his version of West Side Story. Playing Maria in the 2021 movie would be life-changing for Zegler who, in one role, could show off both her voice and acting chops. The role earned her a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Young Actor/Actress and a Golden Globe win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
Because Zegler's first on-screen role was working with Spielberg, something interesting about her film career so far is how heavily focused it has been on mainstream Hollywood blockbusters. In 2023, she played the lead role of Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and this year, she is about to play the titular...

A24 delivered the “disaster comedy of the millennium” when their film Y2K (you can read our review at This Link) reached theatres on December 6th – but not a lot of movie-goers turned out to see it. The movie has only made $4 million at the domestic box office. Maybe it will be better luck when viewers have the option to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes… and that option is arriving very soon. Next week, in fact. Y2K is set to receive a digital release on December 24th and is available for pre-order on Apple TV and Amazon.
The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, who also crafted the screenplay with Evan Winter, Y2K has the following official logline: On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

Another one of A24's horror movies from this year will be headed to digital soon. It's the horror-comedy Y2K, and it will be available on digital platforms a little earlier than expected. We're not complaining, though. Now, we have something new to watch before the year wraps up.
According to an A24 press release, Y2K will be released on digital on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, aka Christmas Eve. On this date, you'll be able to rent or purchase the film through digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and AppleTV. In fact, you currently have the option to pre-order the movie on these sites for the price of $24.99 before taxes.
Will Y2K come to streaming? Yes, the horror-comedy will eventually land on a streaming platform. It will most likely drop on Max at a later date because of a multiyear exclusive deal that Warner Bros. Discovery...

Warning: Spoilers for Y2K.
Exploding with just about every reference from 1999, Y2K is a horror comedy directed by SNL alum Kyle Mooney in his directorial debut, which is also co-written by him and Evan Winter. The film follows two high school losers named Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), who finally decide to live a little by crashing the house party of a classmate on New Year's Eve in 1999. With plenty of Can’t Hardly Wait and Superbad vibes, the beginning of the film is rife with all the woes of teenage angst but rapidly shifts toward a bloody and imaginative version of the Y2K issue that plagued the country leading up to the year 2000.
In reality, nothing happened. However, in Mooney’s film, machines take over at the stroke of midnight and subsequently turn against humanity, either killing them or assimilating them. Now on the cusp of an apocalypse,...

In the film, which Mooney also stars in, Eli (Jaeden Martell) and his friend Danny (Julian Dennison) come with the idea to crash an end of the millennium New Year’s Eve party they weren’t invited to. Plot: Two high school nobodies make the decision to crash the last major celebration before the new millennium on New Year’s Eve 1999. The night becomes even crazier than they could have ever dreamed when the clock strikes midnight.
Review: As a millennial, I’ve always gotten a kick out of the hysteria surrounding Y2K. The idea of all the computers going haywire simply because of the passing of a date always felt pretty wacky. But the event has never really gotten a proper cinematic telling. Until now. SNL’s Kyle Mooney makes his directorial debut with a film that feels like Small Soldiers on steroids. But if you’re not into nostalgia, then you may have to look elsewhere. Thankfully, nostalgia may as well be my middle name.

But if you’re not into nostalgia, then you may have to look elsewhere. Thankfully, nostalgia may as well be my middle name.

Y2K director Kyle Mooney details how one iconic star's involvement was dream fulfillment and perfectly captured the era of the horror-comedy movie. The 2024 movie sees two unpopular teens crash the New Year's Eve party of their more social classmates, only for the infamous hypothetical computer bug to take effect and send the world into a technologically chaotic nightmare. The Y2K cast stars Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, Rachel Zegler, Eduardo Franco, Lachlan Watson, and Mason Gooding as part of the group of survivors, alongside Alicia Silverstone and Tim Heidecker.
Ahead of Y2K's release, Mooney sat down with Screen Rant to unpack one of the biggest '90s cameos, with Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst playing a fictionalized version of himself in the movie's apocalypse. Highlighting Durst's involvement as an unexpected delight, he stated that the singer was present in the earliest drafts in 2019, as his contributions were so indicative of the era.

Remember the Y2K scare, when we were afraid that computers wouldn’t be able to process having a 2 in the year instead of a 1, and which would lead to the collapse of society? That didn’t happen, but what if it did? What if the electronics came to life and tried to kill us? That would be phat, wouldn’t it? That’s the premise of “Y2K,” an A24 horror comedy that the distributor released a trailer for on Wednesday.
“Y2K” is the directorial debut of former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Kyle Mooney, who also wrote the script with Evan Winter and appears as a stoner who hangs out with high school kids half his age. The film is set during a New Year’s Eve party which two uncool high school kids (Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison) crash. Agatha All Along is one of the biggest shows of the fall. In terms of hype and excitement, it feels like one of the biggest of Marvel's Disney+ shows since the streaming service launched in 2019.
After fans watched all nine episodes of Agatha All Along, there's going to be a long wait until Agatha All Along season 2 (or whatever iteration that continues this story) hits Disney+. That's the bad news. The good news is two-fold. It sure sounds like Agatha All Along season 2 is going to happen. Disney and Marvel haven't officially confirmed the series will be back, but showrunner Jac Schaeffer sure made it sound like more Agatha is on the way after that incredible season 1 ending and finale, via Marvel.
And, on top of that, we have a lot of good and witchy shows like Agatha All Along while we wait for season 2.

“Chucky” has been canceled after three seasons, Variety has learned.
The horror comedy series aired on both USA Network and Syfy. Season 3 aired in two parts — the first in October 2023 and the second between April and May 2024. According to sources, there had been discussions of bringing the show back for an abbreviated final season or even a wrap up film, but ultimately to no avail.
“I’m heartbroken over the news that ‘Chucky’ won’t be coming back for a fourth season, but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have,” series creator Don Mancini said in a statement. “I’d like to thank UCP/Syfy/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew (the best in the business), and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Y2K is a horror comedy set during the Y2K panic, starring rising talent like Julian Dennison and Rachel Zegler. Kyle Mooney's directorial debut imagines a chaotic New Year's Eve party in 1999 turned deadly. Premiered at SXSW, Y2K releases on December 6, offering a late-'90s vibe and a mix of rising stars and seasoned pros.
Kyle Mooneys alternate-history horror comedy Y2K is led by a stellar ensemble cast featuring such rising stars as Julian Dennison, Jaeden Martell, and Rachel Zegler. The movie marks Mooneys directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Evan Winter. The story imagines what wouldve happened if Y2K the computer apocalypse that was expected to follow the turn of the year 2000 actually happened. Its told through the lens of a coming-of-age romp set at a high school party held on New Years Eve 1999. Picture This is the End, but with more of a late-90s vibe.

IndieWire’s 2000s week continues in spirit with the highly-anticipated trailer for Kyle Mooney’s directorial debut “Y2K.”
The high school-set comedy stars Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison as a trio of teens who have to survive New Years 1999 as Y2K literally happens. The A24 film was announced in 2023, with Mason Gooding, Alicia Silverstone, Lachlan Watson, The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker, Eduardo Franco, Miles Robbins, Fred Hechinger, and Daniel Zolghadri rounding out the cast.
“SNL” alum Mooney directs from a script he cowrote with Evan Winter. Mooney exited the live comedy sketch series in May 2022, along with fellow cast members Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, and Aidy Bryant.
“Y2K” is produced by Jonah Hill under his Strong Baby productions, along with screenwriter Winter, Matt Dines, and Ali Goodwin. “The Bear” creator Christopher Storer is also producing under his American Light & Fixture banner.
Wētā Workshop handled the apocalyptic film’s design and practical effects.

Chucky creator Don Mancini hopes the show will work in tandem with the new Child's Play movie that he is developing. Mancini also reveals that he has pitched season 4 of the show, which has not yet been greenlit. The Chucky show could be making an unprecedented move by connecting directly to a new Child's Play movie.
Don Mancini reveals how the new Child's Play movie will interrelate with the show Chucky. Mancini is the creator of the iconic killer doll, having written the original script for the first movie in the franchise and penned the scripts for the remainder in addition to directing three of the seven movies in the original continuity and creating the show, which returns to Syfy and USA Network this April. Recently, he teased that he was working on a new movie in the franchise, though he didn't share further details about the project at that time.

Y2K reimagines a disastrous Y2K scenario at the turn of the millennium with a comedic twist, featuring a young cast and Gen X star Alicia Silverstone. The film follows two high schoolers, Eli and Danny, navigating a tech apocalypse on New Year's Eve, showcasing twists on coming-of-age comedy tropes. Director Kyle Mooney's collaborative and creative approach brought out the best in the talented cast, creating a nostalgic '90s atmosphere on set.
Revisit the disaster that wasn't in Y2K, a disaster-comedy movie making its debut at the 2024 South by Southwest festival. The film reimagines what might have happened had all the doom and gloom predictions come true and technology went haywire when the calendar changed from 1999 to 2000. “What if the Y2K bug was real” feels like such an obvious concept that it’s surprising that it took so long to come up with it. At its best, the teen horror comedy Y2K will make you feel glad that Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter were the first to the punch. Displaying the shaggy looseness of sketch comedy, the film regards its setting with an irony-free attention to detail as it keys itself to the vibes of people who came of age before the new millennium started and would give anything to live it over again, with or without killer robots.
It’s New Year’s Eve 1999, and shy teenage nerd Eli (Jaeden Martell) is more worried about making an impression on his cool-girl crush, Laura (Rachel Zegler), than he is about the approaching millennium and what it might bring. After hitting up the video store with his gregarious best bud,...
