Glaz, Boat Rocker Team on Azores-Set Mystery Series ‘Human Nature’ (Exclusive)

Glaz Entretenimento, one of the fastest growing outfits in Brazil and Portugal, and global company Boat Rocker have struck a co-production-distribution deal on fantasy mystery TV series project “Human Nature.”

Created and executive produced by Denis Nielsen, with Joe Mallozzi (“Stargate Atlantis”) attached as showrunner, “Human Nature” marks Glaz’s entry into English-language TV drama production.

Inspired by real-life facts, the TV show is set at an Azores surfing event. There, a young surfer discovers strange occurrences in his seemingly idyllic island community as competitors suddenly begin to disappear.

Maggie Malina (“Promised Land”) and Glaz Entretenimento’s Business Director and Producer Carolina Alckmin are also set to executive produce.

Wang Bing, Leonor Teles, Werner Hezog and Frederick Wiseman titles head to Doclisboa 2023

The Portuguese festival showcases documentaries from around the world.

The 21st edition of DocLisboa will open with Wang Bing’s Man In Black, and will close with Baan from Portuguese director Leonor Teles.

Man In Black premiered at Cannes and Baan made its debut at Locarno earlier this year.

The festival will take place in Lisbon from October 19-29.

Wang Bing, via videoconference, and Telles both participated in the festival press conference on September 28 at which festival director Miguel Ribeiro revealed this year’s programme in full.

Mexican director Carlos Eichelmann Kaiser’s debut feature Red Shoes premiered in Venice’s Horizons Extra section.

Mexican director Carlos Eichelmann Kaiser’s debut feature Red Shoes won three awards at this year’s Sofia International Film Festival (March 16-31), taking home the international competition’s main prize - the Sofia City of Film Award - as well as the Fipresci prize and young jury award.

Red Shoes premiered in Venice’s Horizons Extra section and is being handled internationally by 102 Distribution.

TorinoFilmLab selects 33 participants for ScriptLab 2023 (exclusive)

There is a particular focus on comedies.

TorinoFilmLab (Tfl) has selected 20 projects for its ScriptLab 2023, plus five story editors, in what it describes as the first ‘fully international’ iteration of the annual development scheme.

The 20 projects come from 20 writer-directors and eight co-writers, and have been selected from 550 submissions.

Those selected will take part in three week-long residential modules in April, June and November; with two online modules in September and October. The participants will be divided into five groups, and tutored by script consultants Philippe Barriere, Severine Cornamusaz, Aleksandra Swierk, Marietta von Hausswolff and Gino Ventriglia.

Doc director Camille Hardman calls out “abhorrent” working conditions for women in US

Hardman’s doc examines workplace inequality 40 years after release of classic comedy ’9 to 5’.

Camille Hardman, the co-director of documentary Still Working 9 To 5, has attacked the “absolutely shocking” and “abhorrent” current conditions for women in low-paid work in the US at a ‘Women in Film, Women at Work’ roundtable event at this week’s Doclisboa festival in Portugal.

“The minimum wage, it’s 7.25 an hour. You can be a single mother with two kids and earn 14,000 a year…it’s a very, very, very low wage,” said Hardman. “Women have to use food stamps. They socially have to get help.
