Dracula's 5-Year-Old $528 Million Box Office Success Reveals Harsh Reality For Classic Horror Character
Image
Dracula's last box-office hit was in 2018 with Hotel Transylvania 3, showing a tough reality for the character in recent years. The success of the family-friendly Hotel Transylvania franchise reveals that less scary versions of Dracula can be huge successes. Recent live-action adaptations of Dracula, like Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, have been box-office flops, suggesting that modernizing Dracula is a challenging task.

Although Dracula is one of the most popular classic monsters in horror, he hasn’t had the best of luck on the big screen, and his last box-office hit happened five years ago. Vampires are some of the most beloved and popular creatures in literature and other media, and the most famous vampire is Dracula. Created by Bram Stoker, Dracula is believed to have been inspired by 15th-century Wallachian prince Vlad the Impaler, also known as Vlad Dracula. Dracula debuted in Stoker’s novel of the same name,...

‘Hotel Transylvania: Transformania’ Set For April Theatrical Release In China
Image
Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania has been granted an April 3 theatrical release date in China. Sony last summer licensed the fourth installment in the successful franchise to Amazon worldwide, but retained China rights.

With the date now confirmed, Sony gets a month’s lead time on promotion and marketing in China where the previous films have grossed a combined $63M, including over $32M from 2018’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.

Although April 3 is a Sunday, it falls at the start of the Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, which can be a lucrative box office period. Still, Transformania will arrive in China nearly three months after it was released on Amazon Prime Video in 240 other countries and territories.

The Hotel Transylvania franchise has grossed $1.36 billion worldwide, with each pic making more than its predecessor. Sony opted to go the Amazon route with this one to avoid...

Amazon Prime Video Sets Streaming Date For ‘Hotel Transylvania: Transformania’
Image
Amazon Prime Video will stream Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania on January 14 in 240 countries and territories.

The tech company licensed rights to the fourth installment in the franchise from Sony earlier this year, extending its opportunistic streak as Covid continues to disrupt the film marketplace. Deadline reported discussions with Amazon in August, which were aimed at enabling the film to avoid a head-to-head matchup with another major animated title, Addams Family 2. Both had been scheduled to come out in early October.

Sony, which is unique among major studios for not having its own streaming platform to supply, has made moves during the pandemic like selling Greyhound to Apple and reaching a major overall agreement with Netflix.

The Hotel Transylvania franchise has grossed $1.3 billion. The new outing features voice work by Selena Gomez, Brian Hull, Jim Gaffigan, Andy Samberg, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade, Keegan-Michael Key,...

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania Trailer Brings Drac's Pack Back One Last Time
Image
The official trailer has arrived for Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, the fourth and final installment of the Hotel Transylvania franchise. On Friday, a new teaser for the animated movie sequel was dropped along with the promise of the official trailer also coming on Monday. Ahead of the movie's premiere this summer, the trailer has now made its way online, and you can watch the video below.

While most of the voice cast is returning from the previous three movies, the voice of Dracula will now be played by Brian Hull. Previously, Sony tested the waters with Hull by having him voice Dracula in Monster Pets, an animated short film created to help promote the upcoming sequel. At the time, Hull posted about his casting in the short on Twitter, but it wasn't clear that he'd also be voicing the vampire in the movie with Adam Sandler not returning.

Dracula Falls For Van Helsing's Great Granddaughter in New Trailer for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation
I've actually enjoyed the first two films in the Hotel Transylvania franchise and this third movie Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation looks like it will be just as fun. The fact that Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) came back to write and direct it is a big plus. I like his silly comedy style.

Sony Pictures Animation has released a new trailer for the film which features the group of monsters taking a cruise for a little vacation, but Dracula (Adam Sandler) is less than thrilled until he falls for the Captain of the ship, who happens to be related to Van Helsing!

The movie also includes Mavis (Selena Gomez), Johnny (Andy Samberg), Griffin the invisible man (David Spade), Wanda (Molly Shannon) and Wayne (Steve Buscemi) the werewolves, Murray the mummy (Keegan-Michael Key), Dennis (Asher Blinkoff), Frank (Kevin James) and Eunice (Fran Drescher), and Blobby. Here's the synopsis:

Hotel Transylvania 2 movie review: check out and never return
The barrage of nonstop sitcom idiocy is nigh on unendurable. A father plotting against his daughter as touching and uplifting? Way worse. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): hate Adam Sandler

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Imagine if Adam Sandler took his galling and appalling Grown Ups franchise and redid it as a cartoon. Well, you don’t have to imagine, because that’s what his Hotel Transylvania franchise is. Sandler here is the voice and very much the attitude of the vampire Dracula, who runs a hotel in Transylvania, because monsters need to get away from the daily grind too. (Sandler is also cowriter, with Robert Smigel, and an executive producer. The director is the series’ returning TV cartoon vet Genndy Tartakovsky.) In the first movie, the hotel opened up to nonmonsters, partly as a result of human Jonathan (the...

Hotel Transylvania 2 review
Adam Sandler is back on voice duties for Hotel Transylvania 2 - but is the film an upgrade on the first?

Once upon a time, in a haunted castle deep within a forest in foreboding Transylvania, a goofy slacker named Jonathan (Andy Samberg) fell in love with a beautiful vampire named Mavis (Selena Gomez). They zing with each other despite Mavis's father Dracula (Adam Sandler) and friends against the union at first. Later, the monsters come to terms with the human/vampire love affair after coming out of the monster closet, so to speak, and revealing to the world their existence. Imagine their surprise to find out that people love them, and normal humans are flocking to stay at the titular Hotel Transylvania.

Like all couples in movie sequels, Jonathan and Mavis have moved past the honeymoon stage and have gone straight to the parenthood stage, with the pair having...

Hotel Transylvania 2 Review
It’s been three years since the original Hotel Transylvania released back in 2012, with a Dracula-in-the-hospitality-industry monster mash-up that made some fervent little fans out of the army of monstrosities on screen and, more importantly to Sony, resulted in a higher-than-expected box office gross.
