This evening the world of Marvel returned to the capital as the Curzon Mayfair played host to the UK premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

It was a wonderful evening on the red carpet as we welcomed in the latest MCU Phase 4 film. As popular as the Iron Man movies have been, they have always suffered from a lack of compelling villains. In Iron Man 3, that seemed set to change, with the arrival of Tony Stark's arch-enemy from the comics, The Mandarin. But that ended up being a cop-out, with The Mandarin turning out to be an actor only pretending to be the supervillain. Now, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to introduce the real Mandarin. According to producer Jonathan Schwartz, this version of the character is going to be a much more three-dimensional villain.

"I think people hear 'the Mandarin' and expect a very specific kind of thing, and that may not be the thing they're getting. They're hopefully getting a more complex and layered take on the character than that name would lead you to."

According to Starlin, the character has the potential to be the new moral center of the Marvel universe after Steve Rogers aka Captain America's exit from the series.

The MCU is continuing with its mission to inject more diversity among its pantheon of superheroes. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will introduce the franchise's first asian superhero. Canadian actor and stuntman Simu Liu has been cast in the role of the titular hero of the film. In an interview with Toronto Life, the actor revealed that trying on his superhero costume for the first time moved him to tears, before giving way to irritation.

"The first time I tried on Shang-Chi's superhero suit. Marvel has never had an Asian lead, so that was such a rare and impactful moment, for me as an actor but also for people who look like me. Chinese sales and distribution company Times Vision has brought two new titles to Cannes this year, including “Shanghai Fortress,” a big-budget summer sci-fi blockbuster that producers hope will replicate the success of “The Wandering Earth.” Its other film at the Marche is family drama “Looking Up.”

“Shanghai Fortress” stars Taiwanese actress Shu Qi and Chinese idol Lu Han, one of the country’s highest-paid celebrities, who rose to fame as a member of the South Korean boy band Exo. It is expected to debut in early August, with China Film Group as the primary distributor.
