‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Film Review: Marvel’s Martial-Arts Saga Nails the Characters and the Kicks
Tim Roth, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Benedict Wong, Meng'er Zhang, Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Florian Munteanu in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
This review of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was first published on August 23.

Marvel Comics creators Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin originally conceived martial-arts hero Shang-Chi as a loose composite of the imagery and mythologies of Bruce Lee, Caine from “Kung Fu” (whom Lee created), and Sax Rohmer’s pulp villain Dr. Fu Manchu. Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”) injects an earnest, charming humility to the character’s introduction into Marvel’s world of larger than life conflicts, while Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh...

How Will Shang-Chi Course Correct the Most Criticized Aspect of Iron Man 3?
Image
As popular as the Iron Man movies have been, they have always suffered from a lack of compelling villains. In Iron Man 3, that seemed set to change, with the arrival of Tony Stark's arch-enemy from the comics, The Mandarin. But that ended up being a cop-out, with The Mandarin turning out to be an actor only pretending to be the supervillain. Now, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to introduce the real Mandarin. According to producer Jonathan Schwartz, this version of the character is going to be a much more three-dimensional villain.

"I think people hear 'the Mandarin' and expect a very specific kind of thing, and that may not be the thing they're getting. They're hopefully getting a more complex and layered take on the character than that name would lead you to."

In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings the main villain,...

Shang-Chi Producer Teases the Best MCU Action Scenes Yet: Every Punch Is Meaningful
Image
Earlier this week, Marvel released the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings trailer. And it packs quite a punch. The MCU has set the bar high when it comes to action scenes. Whether it is Thor and Hulk slugging it out in an arena, or the Winter Soldier single-handedly taking on Captain America, Falcon, and Black Widow, the fight scenes are always the highlight of Marvel films. And now the bar is set to be raised even higher with the upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. According to producer Jonathan Schwartz, the movie features some of the best MCU action ever, inspired by classic Chinese action films.

"I think this is the best action [Marvel has] ever done. Every punch is meaningful, every fighting style is meaningful, and the story is told visually in such a great way."

In the comics, Shang-Chi was trained from birth to...
