This post contains major spoilers for "My Oxford Year."
Netflix might be responsible for one of the best limited series of the year in "Adolescence," but that doesn't mean the streamer has forgotten how to churn out the easily binge-able melodramas that helped it win the streaming wars. "My Oxford Year" is the latest Netflix romance film and it's, well, nonsense really. But it's sort of fun nonsense in that it makes no attempt whatsoever to apologize for its young adult modern-day fairy tale naiveté.
The film stars Sofia Carson, who played Nora Parisi in Netflix's "Carry-On" and has been making a name for herself as an aspiring queen of Netflix romantic dramas, beginning with 2022's "Purple Hearts" and continuing on to the romantic comedy "The Life List" (which dominated Netflix's top charts in 2025). Now, she's returned for more romance with "My Oxford Year," a BookTok fantasy come to life...

If you think about it, Robert Downey Jr.'s decision to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes all the sense in the world. He won an Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, but the film's box office success can be attributed to several factors. Downey's non-Marvel films in the last couple of decades have been largely hit-or-miss. The two movies that worked beyond a doubt — Sherlock Holmes and its sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows — didn't result in a third installment. The Judge and The Soloist underperformed, while Due Date was only a moderate hit. Downey's biggest flop, however, was the would-be franchise-starter Dolittle. The movie is now witnessing a resurgence on Netflix, where it debuted a few days ago.
According to FlixPatrol, Dolittle has accumulated a total of over 1,200 points so far this year on Netflix, and more on HBO Max. It was the...

Star John Boyega has had a tremendous post-Star Wars run. After playing Finn in the sequel trilogy, Boyega headlined a string of well-reviewed genre films, returning to his roots. He broke out with a charming lead role in the British science-fiction film Attack the Block, before being cast in one of the lead roles in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. Among his recent films is the drama-thriller Breaking, which was released theatrically in 2022, following a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The fact-based movie was compared to the Al Pacino classic Dog Day Afternoon, and earned excellent reviews. Although it didn't make much of a dent at the box office, Breaking is climbing up the streaming charts following its debut on Netflix.

For the past six weeks, the animated KPop Demon Hunters has been dominating Netflix's Global Top 10 chart, finishing in first or second place every week since its release on June 20. It's even earned the distinction of becoming Netflix's fourth most-watched movie of all time with 158.8 million views, ranking behind Don't Look Up, Carry-On, and Red Notice.
However, for the past two weeks since its release on July 25, it's been Happy Gilmore 2 that has topped Netflix's Global Top 10 chart with 46.7 million views and 40.8 million views, respectively. “KPop Demon Hunters” made Netflix history during the week of July 28, becoming the streamer’s fourth most-watched English-language movie to date. In the seven weeks since its debut, the action musical secured 158.8 million views.
The animated movie from Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans has now been more widely watched in its first 90 days than Ryan Reynolds and Jennifer Garner’s “The Adam Project,” Sandra Bullock’s “Bird Box,” Cameron Diaz and Jaime Foxx’s “Back in Action,” Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind,” Ryan Gosling’s “The Gray Man,” Millie Bobby Brown’s “Damsel” and Robert Rodriguez’s “We Can Be Heroes.” It also bumped “We Can Be Heroes” out of Netflix’s top 10 most popular English-language movies list.
And since the 90-day cutoff for “KPop Demon Hunters” won’t happen until mid-September, chances are high that ranking will only be going up, up, up.

When director Iain Morris was approached about directing Netflix’s My Oxford Year, he thought they got the wrong person.
For Morris, a British comedy legend best known for creating The Inbetweeners, taking on a romance film wasn’t something he necessarily thought was in his future, but perhaps that was the point.
“This script came through, and I thought, ‘They got the wrong person,’ because it was quite sincere. It was quite romantic. But when speaking with producer Marty Bowen, Morris recalls the “first thing” he told him being, “I love The Inbetweeners. “And I’m a terribly shallow and a sucker for flattery,” Morris quips. “And I thought, ‘Okay, I wonder if I can?...

Netflix's new rom-com based on a bestselling novel continues a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes trend for Sofia Carson. Known for playing Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen, in Disney's musical Descendants franchise, the actor has starred in many Netflix movies.
However, except for the 2024 action thriller Carry-On, where she played Nora Parisi, the director of operations at Lax, which garnered positive reviews from critics, most of her Netflix movies have not achieved the same recognition.
Carson starred as Cassie in the 2022 Purple Hearts, which follows an unconventional love story between a struggling singer-songwriter and a troubled Marine, but the movie only has a 33% critical approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes. Similarly, her 2025 coming-of-age movie The Life List, about a woman on a quest to complete a teenage bucket list, also ended up with a divisive score of 47%.

[This story contains spoilers for Netflix’s My Oxford Year.]
Audiences may have seen Sofia Carson fall in love onscreen in roles such as Netflix’s Purple Hearts and the Life List, but her new film is offering a revival of the traditional classic love story.
“There’s a certain level of escapism that comes with falling in love with a love story that is so beautiful to be able to offer that, and this one in particular just felt timeless,” Carson tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It felt like it had been a while since I had seen a classic and timeless love story brought to life for this generation.”
That love story is My Oxford Year, directed by Iain Morris and starring Carson (who also exec produce) and Queen Charlotte star Corey Mylchreest. The film, based on the 2018 book by Julia Wheelan, centers on Carson’s Anna, an ambitious young American woman who sets...

Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers for My Oxford Year.
My Oxford Year has followed the pattern of its predecessors, fortunately or unfortunately. Book-to-screen adaptations rarely walk in a straight line. They pick a lane, tighten some threads, loosen others, and chase a feeling that works on screen. Julia Whelan’s novel is brisk and witty, with a clear eye on ambition and intimacy. However, Netflix’s adaptation leans into romance and reflection, reshaping the same journey for a different medium.
You’ll still see Oxford, the spark between them, and a year that changes everything. What changes from book to movie is the frame: who she is when she arrives, how the truth comes out, and how the ending feels. Now, let’s walk through the three big differences between Julia Whelan’s novel and the recently released Netflix hit.

College romances come with their bouquet of characters, like a British garden in spring! Especially a romance taking place in Oxford floods us with a rush of archetypes within its students, but with the complexity of their emotional worlds involved, we also have glimpses of their family, the values that shaped their childhood, and the lovers themselves. Let’s take a look at the major characters of Netflix’s latest release, My Oxford Year.
Anna De La Vega
Sofia Carson’s Anna is the protagonist of the film—we enter Oxford through her lens to fulfill the dream she had as a ten-year-old girl who was told that she could do anything if she wanted. She is a graduate of Cornell University and has a perfectly utilitarian job at Goldman Sachs lined up for her. The point of the master’s is sort of like a sabbatical, where she gets to “explore” her passion.

A film’s opening moments often function as a declaration of intent. In My Oxford Year, the declaration is a familiar one. We meet Anna De La Vega, a young woman caught in a classically modern dilemma: a secured future in finance at Goldman Sachs versus a year of intellectual indulgence studying Victorian poetry at Oxford.
The university itself is rendered not as a place but as an ideal, a fantasy of stone spires and hushed libraries captured in soft, reverent light. It is a backdrop practically begging for a romance to disrupt its academic calm. The disruption arrives in the form of Jamie Davenport, a doctoral student whose charming arrogance is as tailored to the genre as his tweed jacket. He becomes her professor, and the film sets its coordinates for a conventional campus romance.
Yet, a shadow hangs over this bright construction. The film begins as one thing...

Taron Egerton recently opened up about the possibility of a sequel to his hit 2024 thriller Carry-On, and it sounds like fans might not want to get their hopes up.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Egerton explained that making Carry-On 2 would be tricky without losing the magic of the original. “Carry-On 2 is really hard. It’s a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas. It then needs to have this huge plot that needs to be foiled and maybe the earwig component. All of that is quite hard to achieve in a sequel without it feeling contrived and to the point of defying credulity. So I have not heard anything, but who knows, stranger things have happened,” he said.
The actor, who played Tsa agent Ethan Kopek, seems skeptical but didn’t completely shut the door on the idea. Carry-On, released on Netflix on...

Taron Egerton recently spoke about the chances of a sequel to Carry-On, the 2024 Netflix thriller that became one of the streaming service’s biggest hits.
The film, set on Christmas Eve, tells the story of a Tsa agent who faces a huge challenge when a traveler tries to blackmail him into letting a dangerous package through airport security. Carry-On was praised by critics and quickly became the second most-watched movie on Netflix.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Egerton was honest about the difficulty of making a follow-up.
He explained that the original movie was a celebration of Christmas and the people who work during the holidays, which makes creating a sequel tricky. Egerton said, “Carry-On 2 is really hard. An Oxford-set college rom-com from the guy behind The Inbetweeners; the return of one of Netflix’s biggest ever shows; Genndy Tartakovsky’s latest adult animated project; Vanessa Kirby’s return to more intimate dramas about the human condition; a documentary that promised to shed new light on the Jussie Smollett hate crime incident; and a murder mystery film featuring several British and Irish acting icons are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in August.
Kicking off August is the rom-com My Oxford Year, which focuses on the tried and trusted formula of a young American girl heading to stuffy old Europe and finding love with some impossibly handsome and terribly charming guy, so it’s almost guaranteed to find a huge audience. Netflix brought in a blend of heartwarming romance and witty comedy with the timeless charm of England’s academic elite in the new romantic comedy, My Oxford Year. Based on Julia Whelan’s novel of the same name, the film follows Anna (Sofia Carson) as she moves to Oxford, England, to pursue her dreams, only to have her life transformed after she meets Jamie Davenport (Corey Mylchreest).
However, what truly elevates the film’s emotional punch is its carefully curated soundtrack, a collection of songs that perfectly mirror the highs, lows, and bittersweet in-betweens of the story. From indie gems to soulful ballads, each track has been carefully selected to suit Anna’s story as she becomes embroiled in love, ambition, and self-discovery throughout her life-changing year in Oxford.

Netflix’s penchant for taking two pretty and committed faces and throwing them into a cesspool of romantic mediocrity continues with its latest offering, “My Oxford Year” (2025). Starring Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest, the Iain Morris-directed film aims for poignancy but can only become a series of tried and tired romantic tropes.
The film pits a dainty dreamer-girl against a swoonworthy British boy who serves cake, figuratively and literally. Understandably, the two get involved in a fling, which turns out to be something more. Let us see how Anna and Jamie shape each other’s lives.
My Oxford Year (2025) Netflix Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“My Oxford Year,” based on the novel by Julia Whelan, is about a woman who goes to Oxford for an entire year, so I guess there’s nothing to criticize about the title. It’s also a love story starring Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest, two actors so conventionally attractive they must have been bitten by radioactive issues of “Us Weekly.”
But as the credits rolled, I sank into my chair, feeling vaguely sated by Netflix’s latest, flagrant attempt to rip off Hallmark’s by making shiny, simplistic-yet-satisfying romances with slightly higher production values and a soundtrack budget that can afford “Yellow” by Coldplay.
That, unfortunately, is the problem. “My Oxford Year” has all the airy charms of a generic rom-com, but that’s not what this movie is. It’s a film that tries, although not very hard, to claw away at your soul. This is not adorable lovey-dovey escapism.

Netflix’s new rom-com release, My Oxford Year, starring Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest, is an overdose of cliches. It’s one of those films that makes you wonder if you’ve already watched it before. The film is centered around Anna De La Vega, an ambitious second-generation immigrant in the United States resolute on making all her dreams come true. From a young age, Anna had her goals set—college, Oxford, and Goldman Sachs—and she lived up to them. She already had a job offer from Goldman Sachs as a financial analyst when she graduated, but she deferred it to spend a year at the University of Oxford to study Victorian poetry. Anna had been living her life according to her perfect plan, but that was before she crossed paths with Jamie Davenport.

An American lives out her British dream in an uninspired yet competently assembled trifle from The Inbetweeners creator Iain Morris

In My Oxford Year, Corey Mylchreest plays the role of Jamie, an Oxford tutor who wins over Anna (Sofia Carson). What begins with fun banter between the duo soon crosses into romance territory. Anna then learns that Jamie has a rare hereditary blood disorder, the same one that took his brother’s life. On top of that, he decides to stop all treatment and wants to live life on his own terms.
This obviously laid down the ground that he would probably die towards the end of the movie. But to the surprise of many, he does not die (not on screen at least), and we get an open ending. Towards the end, we see him and Anna making the conscious decision to treasure what time they have left.

This is the second Sofia Carson romance movie I’ve seen on Netflix this month, and they’ve both somehow captured the same feeling, one that I cannot mention out of fear of spoilers. Look, if you’ve seen the trailer for My Oxford Year, then you already have a fair idea of how things are going to turn out. On the other hand, if you’ve read the book, then you definitely know how this ends, but if, like me, you’re entirely new to this story, then I’d recommend going in blind. My Oxford Year follows Anna, a young American woman, who decides to defer her 6-figure job to go do a year of literature at Oxford to live a little bit. She’s the kind of girl who dreams about libraries and has the Harry Potter theme playing as the background score of her life. Anna...

Netflix is kicking off the final month of summer with a packed slate of new content. This month will be headlined by the return of one of its biggest original series, Wednesday season 2. But the series isn’t the only highlight this August. The streaming giant is dropping 50-plus movies and TV shows, ranging from blockbuster franchises to Netflix Originals, reality TV shows.
Jenna Ortega returns as Wednesday Addams in a darker, more dangerous chapter. The first part of Wednesday Season 2 Part 1 will drop on August 6, with the rest arriving in September. Fan excitement is already sky-high thanks to new cast additions like Steve Buscemi and Lady Gaga.
But don’t stop there. Titles like My Oxford Year, The Thursday Murder Club, Perfect Match Season 3, and political thriller Hostage give viewers plenty more to talk about. Plus, global originals from Korea, Brazil, and Japan fill out the calendar with international...

With its premiere on the Netflix streaming service, My Oxford Year arrives as a romantic drama navigating the well-trodden terrain of love and loss against the storied backdrop of British academia. Produced by Temple Hill Entertainment, a company with a notable portfolio in emotionally resonant narratives, the film charts the collision of two lives: Anna De La Vega (Sofia Carson), an American student of immense ambition, and Jamie Davenport (Corey Mylchreest), her charismatic but troubled literature tutor. The film’s genesis is unusually circular: it is an adaptation of Julia Whelan’s novel of the same name, which was itself adapted from an original screenplay by Allison Burnett. Burnett returns as a co-writer for this cinematic version, completing a rare journey from screen to page and back again. The project is helmed by BAFTA nominee Iain Morris, a director whose background in comedy suggests a deliberate, and perhaps unexpected, tonal strategy for the material.

Seconds after the opening credits of “My Oxford Year” have discreetly scrolled across the screen, our happy heroine strolls the streets surrounding the titular British institution and is haphazardly doused by a massive puddle thanks to a vintage vehicle driven by her soon-to-be paramour. This klutzy comedic moment endemic to the rom-com genre unfortunately doubles as a fitting metaphor for the viewing audience, as the ensuing shenanigans make us feel pelted by that same gutter water time and time again. What should be a tender, feminist-minded story centered on a young woman rediscovering her dormant childhood dreamer turns into a middling melodrama about being with a cute guy in desperate need of her rescue.
Anna de la Vega (Sofia Carson) has been fantasizing about attending Oxford University since she was 10 years old, cracking open a dusty old book of poetry for the first time. Even before her face appears on...

My Oxford Year is the kind of movie I probably wouldn’t have watched if it wasn’t my job. This kind of cheaply produced romantic comedy/drama, where the entire budget goes to shooting in an exotic location and exactly one or two known stars, goes for a dime a dozen on Netflix. This isn’t even the first one this year to star Sofia Carson. But unlike The Life List from a few months back, this one is actually based on an (apparently) popular book by Julia Whelan.
Does the pedigree of the source material help to elevate the adaptation? Unfortunately, no, as My Oxford Year is a dull, often frustrating mess that frequently fails to clear even the extremely low bar of turn-your-brain-off Netflix rom-coms. And if it is accurate to the book, which I doubt it is, the source material wasn’t all that great to begin with.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a full decade since Descendants premiered on Disney Channel and became the musical franchise for a new generation of Disney kids. The Core Four — Mal (Dove Cameron), Evie (Sofia Carson), Carlos (Cameron Boyce), and Jay (Booboo Stewart) — stepped into their rightful places amongst Disney Channel royalty. Carson looks back at her Descendants journey with nothing but love. The actress made her film debut as Evie, the aspiring fashion designer daughter of the Evil Queen (Kathy Najimy), who embraces her time in Auradon when the kids of Disney villains get a chance at a life outside the Isle of the Lost. The My Oxford Year star spoke with TV Insider about that magical moment in her life. “When I finished the first Descendants movie, which was my first film, my first real job. I remember I was in the car with our producer,...

As the calendar page turns from July to August, the looming dread of the back-to-school season returns. But Netflix has the cure for that seasonal angst in the form of its "C's Get Degrees" collection. Debuting on August 1, the streamer has a collection of classic movies centering around "school days, teenage angst, and first-of-their-kind adventures." The C's Get Degrees collection features a number of classic films, ranging from the 1980s, the 1990s, and the 2000s.
The collection's 1980s fare includes the John Hughes classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off, in which the title character (Matthew Broderick) plays hooky for a day with his neurotic best pal (Alan Ruck) and his girlfriend (Mia Sara) for an adventure across Chicago; another Hughes comedy, Weird Science, about a pair of goofball nerds (Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith) accidentally create the perfect, and all-powerful, woman (Kelly LeBrock) via a scientific experiment; and Amy Heckerling...
