Rules Of Engagement | A William Friedkin war drama scared to face its demons
Image
From director William Friedkin came the war drama, Rules Of Engagement. As we re-evaluate the cinema of 2000, does it stand the test of time?

This is the latest in Aj Black’s series of features on films released in the year 2000. He previously looked back at DreamWorks animation, The Road To El Dorado. Potential spoilers lie ahead…

Did William Friedkin steal the plot of Rules Of Engagement from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine?

In that series, the noble Klingon Commander, Worf, is tried by an extradition hearing. In the middle of hostilities between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, Worf commanded a vessel that fired on and destroyed a civilian transporter, mistakenly believing it to be a Klingon warship.

That episode is called – you guessed it – Rules Of Engagement, and it aired just three years before Friedkin’s film came out. Perhaps the original writer of the film, James Webb,...

When Samuel L Jackson & Team Banished Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard Director From Set For This Hilarious Reason

Why Was Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard Director Kicked Out Of Set By Samuel L. Jackson & Team?(Photo Credit –Prime Video)

In the chaotic yet comedic world of movie-making, unexpected bloopers are part of the drill, but what happens when the guy yelling “action!” becomes the main source of the disruption? That’s exactly what went down on the set of Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.

The director, Patrick Hughes, couldn’t stop cracking up during takes, so much so that the cast and crew resorted to kicking him out. The man was wheeled outside the studio mid-winter in the freezing cold. Why? Because Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, and Salma Hayek were too hilarious for their own good.

‘Pulp Fiction:’ Lawrence Bender Reflects on Producing Quentin Tarantino’s Modern Hollywood Classic
Image
“Pulp Fiction” is a modern Hollywood classic, but upon release, the 1994 Quentin Tarantino-directed offbeat crime thriller was audacious to say the least. It told a narrative in non-chronological order, casted John Travolta off of a career slump, showcased on-screen drug use and graphic violence and gave its gun-wielding characters ample time to shoot the breeze before shooting their targets.

Nevertheless, the film succeeded, so much that audiences are still discussing it over a generation later. “Pulp Fiction” producer Lawrence Bender attended the Variety 120 Series screening, presented by Barco, a summer-long program hosted by Jazz Tangcay, that celebrates Variety‘s 120th anniversary by showing iconic films such as “All About Eve,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Psycho.”

Bender reflected on the first time “Pulp Fiction” came into his consciousness. It was 1992 and he was meeting Tarantino in Amsterdam ahead of the Cannes Film Festival premiere of “Reservoir Dogs,” Tarantino’s...

BTS Denies Recording On Michael Jackson Tribute Album: “Not involved In Any Capacity”
Image
K-pop sensation BTS has been forced to deny any involvement in a Michael Jackson tribute album following a report in a Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper.

The Irish Sun on Sunday reported over the weekend that County Westmeath-based music studio, Grouse Lodge Studios, was attempting to record songs originally written for the King of Pop.

Jackson spent time recording at Grouse Lodge in 2006, collaborating with the likes of Will.i.am on music that ultimately never saw the light of day.

Grouse is planning to revisit these tracks, with studio boss Paddy Dunning telling The Irish Sun on Sunday that he had signed up superstars including BTS.

Dunning said: “The sessions started last year and we have already had the Korean boy band BTS over with us in Grouse Lodge, recording one of the songs.”

On Tuesday, however, BTS moved to deny the claim, while Dunning’s quote has now disappeared from the...

Every Taylor Sheridan Show Releasing This 2025 Fall, Ranked Least to Most Anticipated
Image
In 2025, fall television isn’t just crowded; it’s ruled by one man: Taylor Sheridan. The Yellowstone architect and TV powerhouse is back, and this time, he’s not playing coy. With three of his shows hitting Paramount+ before the year ends, Sheridan is staging an audacious takeover of the small screen, and Paramount has officially confirmed the storm is coming. From oil fields and mob wars to prison politics and crime dynasties, Sheridan’s slate is bursting at the seams and fans are already bracing for impact.

No exact dates for most of these have been nailed down (thank the looming Skydance-Paramount merger), but the company has already drawn the lines in the sand: Landman season 2, Tulsa King season 3, and Mayor of Kingstown season 4. Also, there’s one Yellowstone sequel spin-off that is all locked in for fall. While the latter remains under wraps, the first three series are coming in hot,...

The 15 Best Adventure Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The adventure genre is one that has been thrilling audiences ever since the birth of the cinematic medium, from pulp literary adaptations to action-packed blockbusters filling theaters every summer. These stories are often set in exotic locales, with hardened protagonists on some sort of quest into the unknown. Compared to more conventional action movies, adventure films are about their environments as much as the high-octane thrills. And given the flexibility of the genre, adventure movies can bridge into fantasy, science fiction, and even horror on occasion.

What keeps the adventure genre consistent is a clear sense of escapism, imbuing its popcorn set pieces with a rousing sense of fun. Whether it's uncovering buried treasure or embarking on an epic voyage, that invigorating narrative sensibility remains front and center as adventure movies whisk their audiences away to parts unknown. Lindsie Was Mentioned In The Trailer

When the docuseries trailer aired a few days ago on YouTube, there was very little backlash in the comments. Most people welcomed the idea of seeing Todd and Julie Chrisley back on TV after their pardon by Donald Trump. However, it was a different story on Instagram when E! News shared about the bits regarding Lindsie and her involvement with the FBI.

Peter Jackson Almost Ruined The Lord of the Rings With a Sauron Scene That He Wisely Deleted
Image
While Peter Jackson undoubtedly transformed J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings into a cinematic masterpiece, he also almost ruined the trilogy with one dramatic battle between Aragorn and Sauron. In this version, Sauron appeared in a fair, angel-like form known as Annatar before turning into the dark, armored figure fans remember from the prologue.

That’s when the two would clash in a fierce duel, ending with Sauron nearly killing Aragorn, until the One Ring is destroyed and the Dark Lord explodes. But eventually, despite filming it with full effects and action, Jackson decided to cut the scene from the final movie. Why? Because it didn’t make sense for Sauron to show up in person.

And, believe it or not, that’s exactly how the director saved the film from obliterating Tolkien’s Og source. After all, this duel would have taken attention away from Frodo and...

A Fan-Favorite Marvel Actor Made An Appearance In A Stargate Sg-1 Episode
Image
"Stargate Sg-1" hosted an impressive array of guest stars over the course of its 10-season run. The show focused on a team of universe-traversing soldiers and scientists, which threw up several problems. The biggest challenge faced by the "Sg-1" VFX team was trying to find new locations to stand in for the various alien planets in the series. But the show also needed a lot of guest actors to portray the extra-terrestrial races that inhabit the multitude of distant planets explored by the Sg-1 team. Often, the show and its spin-offs got around that particular challenge by casting the same actors in different roles. One of the most prolific "Stargate Sg-1" guest stars, for example, actually played nine different characters, though thanks to the prosthetics and makeup you'd never know it was the same guy.

But there were also multiple guest stars who only showed up a handful of episodes.

The Stargate Sg-1 Character You Likely Forgot Saw's Tobin Bell Played
Image
The year was 2004. A horror-slasher helmed by a first-time director premiered at Sundance, offering a simple, yet anxiety-inducing premise. What if two strangers found themselves chained inside an empty, dilapidated bathroom, with two contradicting tape recordings to guide their possible survival? After the film scrapped its original straight-to-video plan to opt for a limited theatrical release instead, it went on to gross an unexpected $104 million worldwide, becoming one of the most profitable horror flicks at the time.

This was James Wan's feature debut, "Saw" (as Wan's actual debut feature is considered lost media), which bloomed into an iconic media franchise, finding a way to adapt to the shifting expectations that came with the genre. This impressive franchise journey, however, would've been impossible without Tobin Bell, who has embodied the twisted, diabolical Jigsaw ever since the first "Saw" unnerved us with his menacing presence.

Bell's contribution to "Saw" as a franchise is foundational,...

Disney Pulls the Plug on Three Major Shows This Summer
Image
Disney recently canceled several popular shows across its networks and streaming platforms. One of the biggest surprises was the cancellation of Doctor Odyssey on ABC after just one season. The medical drama, set on a cruise ship, was a Ryan Murphy production starring Joshua Jackson. Fans loved its fresh take, but ABC decided not to move forward. Jackson shared his frustration in a recent interview: “This is a crazy and difficult business, and whatever the reasons were for them not wanting to move forward with it, they don’t actually tell us those things,” he said.

He added, “They may make that show with somebody else. I have no idea what their plans are. They haven’t let me know, but I am not holding my breath that it’s coming back.” While the show hasn’t been officially canceled, sources say the actors have been released from their contracts,...

Disney Axes 3 Major TV Shows in Shocking Summer Shake-Up
Image
Disney decided to cancel some major shows this summer. These decisions have left viewers shocked, with some projects ending after just one season and others suddenly disappearing from the schedule.

While each show had its own reason for being cut, the results were the same, fans were left wondering what happened and whether any of them could make a comeback.

One of the most surprising cancellations came from ABC with the medical drama Doctor Odyssey. The show, which starred Joshua Jackson, only aired for one season before it was pulled from the lineup. Jackson opened up about how he felt after hearing the news. “This is a crazy and difficult business, and whatever the reasons were for them not wanting to move forward with it, they don’t actually tell us those things,” he explained.

The actor admitted he was disappointed, adding, “I am always bummed out when a show gets canceled.

30 Most Infamous Wardrobe Malfunctions in Hollywood History
Image
We’ve all had fashion fails, forgotten to zip, worn something backwards, or had a button betray us at the worst possible time. But imagine that happening in front of thousands of people… with phones out… mid-performance… in a crystal-covered outfit. That’s the reality of the most infamous wardrobe malfunctions in Hollywood. One wrong move and boom, you’re trending for all the wrong reasons.

Now, every once in a while, someone handles it like an absolute legend. Recently, Jennifer Lopez, at her birthday concert in Warsaw, when she walked out to greet the crowd, her skirt slipped off. Just dropped. And what did she do? Tossed it to the audience like it was a planned moment and joked, “I’m glad I had underwear on—I don’t usually.” That’s icon behavior. But let’s be real, not everyone gets a moment like that.

Most wardrobe malfunctions are straight-up cringe.

‘Aew: Dynamite’ Review (Jul 30th 2025)
Image
Welcome to this week’s review of Aew: Dynamite, which was broadcast once again from the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois. Let’s get straight into the review!

Match #1: The Young Bucks def. The Outrunners The following is courtesy of allelitewrestling.com:

With the Bucks clearly off their games, the Outrunners got off to a hot start, but it was the former Aew World Tag Team Champions, Matt and Nick, who took control on the outside. Matt even went as far as to hijack the legendary Tony Schiavone’s headset to let the world know that the “superstars” were here and should be afforded the proper respect. Even without their typical executive luxuries, the Bucks obviously still know how to get it done and had Truth Magnum in dire straits. Finally, Magnum was able to find just enough daylight to make the tag to a fired up Turbo Floyd.

Tyler Perry Confirms New Sequel To $116M Comedy Franchise, Original Cast Expected To Return
Image
Tyler Perry may not be the most consistent director in terms of critical reception, but he has had an incredibly impressive rate of production. A multi-hyphenate talent who has served as producer, writer, director, and actor — and sometimes all on the same project — he has an impressive filmography that mostly includes comedies.

Perry is best known for his work on the Madea franchise. This began with the character's appearance in The Diary of A Mad Black Woman, a 2005 film that Perry wrote and acted in. Most recently, that franchise continued with the 2025 Netflix release Madea's Destination Wedding.

Perry's output has been even more prominent in the last few years because of his deal with Netflix. The streamer formed this multi-year partnership with Perry in October 2023, which would allow Perry to produce multiple movies for the streamer.

This deal has been pretty successful for the creator. His movie Straw, which came out this year,...

Listen: Harrison Ford Speaks! Behind the Scenes of Variety’s Cover Story on the Movie Legend
Image
It’s not every week that starts out with a sit-down with Harrison Ford, wearing a tuxedo no less.

But that’s how last week began for Angelique Jackson, Variety‘s senior entertainment writer, who penned this week’s cover story on the legendary movie star. At 83, Ford nabbed his first-ever Emmy nomination earlier this month for his work on the Apple TV+ comedy “Shrinking.” Jackson discusses her experience sitting down in Los Angeles with the famed star of “Star Wars” and the Indiana Jones franchise for the Cover Story segment of the latest episode of “Daily Variety” podcast.

Jackson notes that Ford, true to his reputation, was a consummate pro who delivered on every level.

Peggy Sirota for Variety

“What I will say is really interesting was that it kind of was like Clark Kent turning into Superman a little bit because Harrison walked in with a cup of black coffee in hand,...

First 'Tulsa King' Season 3 Images Bring Back Sylvester Stallone’s Crime Boss
Image
Sylvester Stallone is back in the saddle — or at least the high-thread-count sheets — as Dwight “The General” Manfredi in Tulsa KingSeason 3, and Paramount+ has dropped our first official look at the upcoming installment of Taylor Sheridan’s unlikely mobster epic, via USA Today. Premiering this September, the new season promises higher stakes, grittier rivalries, and the debut of Samuel L. Jackson as the newest player in Sheridan’s growing crime-verse. And if the first-look images are anything to go by, Tulsa King is leaning even further into its pulpy, gun-toting roots.

The Season 2 finale left Dwight and his oddball crew briefly basking in victory before being yanked—literally—out of bed by a government task force. Now, as seen in the images, the fight for Tulsa is only heating up, and the crime world is expanding fast. One of the most exciting developments? Jackson, 76, joins the cast as Russell Lee Washington Jr.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Beats the Most Divisive Lord of the Rings Franchise Movie at the Global Box Office
Image
After passing the coveted $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, Disney's Lilo & Stitch notched another couple of wins. It overtook Christopher Nolan's landmark superhero film The Dark Knight, and has now passed the lifetime global haul of arguably the biggest disappointment of director Peter Jackson's career. While the New Zealand filmmaker does have The Lovely Bones on his resume, the film didn't open to massive expectations. However, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was perhaps the most-anticipated prequel since Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. The movie passed the $1 billion mark on the strength of pure goodwill, but it hasn't exactly aged all that well.

The Hobbit trilogy is widely considered to be inferior to Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films, which made a killing at the box office and won numerous Oscars. An Unexpected Journeyconcluded its theatrical run with $1.014 billion, a benchmark that...

‘The Naked Gun’ Review: Liam Neeson Nails the Deadpan Goofiness, but Pamela Anderson Is the Scene-Stealer in Uneven Legacy Sequel
Image
The three-man comedy factory that ruled the 1980s with their fusillades of slapstick, sight gags, loopy non sequiturs and winking innuendo was David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker — Hollywood’s Zaz before David Zaslav. Their legacy rivals that of Mel Brooks in the ’60s and ’70s, most notably via Airplane! and the Naked Gun movies, though I also have a soft spot for their swerve into more conventional farce with the acerbic dark comedy Ruthless People. Even the misstep of Top Secret! yielded its share of laughs, despite attempting to hit an unwieldy jumble of parody targets.

Having honed their skills in a college sketch-comedy troupe, the trio’s strategy was to throw as many jokes per minute at the screen as possible, the sillier the better, ensuring that enough of them stuck to cushion the ones that missed the mark.

Their 1982 ABC series spoofing crime procedurals, Police Squad!,...
