‘The Bear’ Season 4 Goes Big and Goes Small in Two Very Special Episodes. Both Work
Image
This post contains spoilers for Season Four of The Bear, which is now streaming on Hulu.

Late in “Bears,” the seventh episode of the new season of The Bear, 16 different people are seated under the same table at a wedding reception. When we first see this table — part of the furnishings in the home of Frank (Josh Hartnett), newly-married to Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs), who used to be married to Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) — it does not seem large enough to accommodate that many people. It looks like… a table, just big...

Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson in Friendship (2024)
One of this year’s funniest comedies, Friendship, is available to rent or purchase on Digital! You can rent the Tim Robinson-led film for $19.99 or buy the feature digitally for $24.99 on Prime Video, Apple TV, and other video-on-demand platforms. If physical media is your poison, you can pre-purchase the movie on Blu-ray and DVD at participating retailers. The physical version of Friendship does not have a release date, but A24 should let us know when it’s coming to shelves soon.

Written and directed by Andrew DeYoung, the film stars Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) in the story of a suburban dad (Robinson) who becomes hellbent on being BFFs with his charismatic new neighbor (Rudd). In his review, Chris Bumbray wrote that the film is, in addition to being very funny, “surprisingly nuanced about how hard it is to make friends as an adult male.

Enrico Colantoni says ‘English Teacher’ is ‘absolutely the show we need right now’
Image
If you ask Enrico Colantoni, English Teacher is "absolutely the show we need right now." As the veteran actor tells Gold Derby, "we make fun of everybody! We make fun of the political correctness. We cross a line every so often, but I think we get away with it without hurting anybody."

English Teacher, an FX comedy created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, offers a sharp, character-driven look at life inside a modern high school. Best known for his cult-favorite web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo, Alvarez plays Evan Marquez, a passionate but perpetually overwhelmed English teacher in Austin, Texas.

The show explores the tangled intersections of education, identity, and cultural change, blending Alvarez's signature offbeat humor with moments of real emotional depth. Colantoni costars as Principal Grant Moretti, whose rigid exterior hides a more complex personality. The supporting cast also includes Stephanie Koenig as...

‘Friendship’ Comedy Bromance With Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd Selling Tickets And Hats – Specialty Preview
Image
Limited opening per screen averages remain challenged even as the studio wide release landscape surges, but there’s a promising new entrant this week in Friendship, the A24 comedy opening on six screens.

The directorial debut of writer-director Andrew DeYoung stars I Think You Should Leave comedian Tim Robinson in his first major on-screen appearance. Early screenings in New York and L.A. have sold out, along with thousands of hats reading ‘Male Friendship’, the latest merch to hit the distributor’s shopping vertical and sell out. The former SNL performer and writer’s cringey cult hit has had three seasons on Netflix.

Friendship, which premiered at SXSW, is at 92% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Deadline’s review calls it a hilarious and “anxiety-inducing dark bromance” where suburban dad Craig (Robinson) falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor (Paul Rudd), but Craig’s attempts to make an adult male friend...

Tim Robinson & Paul Rudd's A24 Comedy Friendship' Gets High Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Friendship, an upcoming A24 comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, is now regarded as one of the best films of the year thus far. The film is getting a limited theatrical release, but it sounds like audiences should do whatever is necessary to catch Andrew DeYoung's feature-length directorial debut that has the I Think You Should Leave star taking his unique comedic sensibilities to the big screen.

As of this writing, Friendship has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 61 reviews. If it stays around that number, it will be a Top 15-rated film on the review aggregate website for 2025. The critic consensus reads, "Tim Robinson expands his exquisitely painful cringe comedy style to feature length with seamless results in Friendship, a toxic bromance that'll make audiences laugh and wince in equal measure." It seems that Robinson is able to translate his awkward comedy for theater audiences, the...

‘English Teacher’ Renewed for Season 2 at FX
Image
“English Teacher,” one of the buzziest comedies of the 2024 television season, will officially be coming back for Season 2. The 10-episode installment is expected to premiere in 2025.

“‘English Teacher’ was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors and crew for the show’s creative excellence,” Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said in a Friday statement. “We look forward to the new season.”

Created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, “English Teacher” follows Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas. Most of the series revolves around Evan grandstanding, often about his liberal beliefs, only to be defeated time and time again by his own ego and short-sightedness. As he navigates his relationships with his friends, co-workers, students and on-again, off-again boyfriend, the series asks, “Can you really be your full self at your job?”

In addition to Alvarez, “English Teacher” stars Stephanie Koenig,...

Stephanie Koenig is always trying to find ‘the most surprising thing’ on ‘English Teacher’ to make you laugh
Image
Stephanie Koenig always knew one aspect of “English Teacher” would work. The FX comedy was created by her Bff Brian Jordan Alvarez, who stars as Evan Marquez, a gay high school English teacher in Austin, Texas. Koenig, who also serves as a writer and story editor, plays Gwen Sanders, Evan’s Bff and a history teacher. “I’d work with Brian previously, so I knew that was going to feel lived-in,” she tells Gold Derby. “We already had chemistry. We’re best friends in real life.”

What surprised her, however, was the immediate chemistry they had with the rest of the cast: Enrico Colantoni, who plays Grant, the principal; Sean Patton, who plays Markie, the gym teacher; and Carmen Christopher, who plays Rick, the counselor. “It was like, ‘Wait, you guys all…'” she continues. “It just felt very lived-in from the start. And I also think there’s also...

How ‘English Teacher’s’ Brian Jordan Alvarez tapped into hot-button topics to make 2024’s funniest new show
Image
The devil works hard, but Brian Jordan Alvarez works harder. For the past month, the creator, writer, director, and star of “English Teacher” has been dining out on the “I Love Your Daughter” meme to promote the FX comedy. The TikTok trend started in September after a user posted a clip from a Season 2 episode of “Gilmore Girls.” In it, Kirk (Sean Gunn), who has made a black-and-white short film, tells his girlfriend’s father, “I love your daughter.” When the father asks what he has to offer, Kirk says, “Nothing. Only this,” and proceeds to awkwardly dance. The sequence in the episode is set to Melle Mel‘s “White Lines (Don’t Do It),” but the TikTok edit swaps it out for Olly Alexander‘s “Breathe.”

Alvarez, who first tasted success online with his 2016 YouTube series “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo” and his viral TikTok and Instagram videos,...

Friendship Review | Tim Robinson Wants to Be Paul Rudd's Friend
Image
We often talk about how hard it is to forge new friendships as we get older. Our routines lock us into specific spaces where meeting new people and trying new things is hard. With that being said, have you ever met someone who's a little too eager to be friends, or maybe even uncomfortably overzealous? You hit it off, hang out, and as you get to know them, alarm bells go off. Andrew DeYoungs new film Friendship takes this premise, turns it up to the highest degree, and utilizes cringe connoisseur Tim Robinson to take it as far as possible.

The film banks on several hilarious scenarios that play much like a full-length sketch from Robinson's acclaimed Netflix show, I Think You Should Leave, but there are also some intelligent epiphanies sprinkled throughout Friendship. In between, DeYoung lets his main character run amok and burn everything down.

An Awkward...

‘English Teacher’ Star Stephanie Koenig Was ‘Excited’ to Make Gwen Feel Like a ‘Real Person’ in Her Big Fight Episode
Image
It’s rare for a freshman comedy to find its footing as quickly as “English Teacher” has. Once that rhythm is found, it’s even rarer for a series to completely challenge that difficult-to-establish flow.

Yet that’s what Brian Jordan Alvarez’s FX comedy does just five episodes in thanks to “Field Trip,” an episode that explores Evan’s (Alvarez) relationship with his best friend, Gwen (Stephanie Koenig).

“I was really excited and eager [for the episode], mainly because I want to give her depth,” Koenig told TheWrap. “[Gwen] is very positive and tries to see the good in things. But she’s also a person who isn’t at all perfect and gets sad,” Koenig said. “Also, Evan is like her favorite, favorite person. So if there’s any sort of trouble within that relationship, it’s like a bomb went off. It’s just nice to see that she’s a real person.

2024's Best New Comedy Is The Rare Non-Cringe Comedy About Gen Z
Image
Brian Jordan Alvarez is one of the most interesting voices in comedy. The general public likely recognizes him as Estéfan in "Will & Grace," Wesley in "Jane the Virgin," or Cole in "M3GAN," but real ones know that he's the brilliant mind behind the Gotham Award-nominated five-part web comedy series "The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo" ... and, if you've spent any time on TikTok, his hit viral universe of filterface characters like Tj Mack. Now, Alvarez serves as the creator, executive producer, and star of the FX workplace comedy "English Teacher," the best new comedy of 2024 and the rare show that manages to tackle Gen Z without sounding like it was written by a bunch of dinosaurs who still ask their nephews to help them open PDFs.

Alvarez plays Evan Marquez, an openly gay English teacher at Morrison-Hensley High in Austin, Texas. He works with his best friend...

‘English Teacher’ Review: Fall TV Starts the Semester with a Razor-Sharp Comedy of Oddballs
Image
Evan Marquez (Brian Jordan Alvarez) is going through it.

The high school English teacher in suburban Texas recently broke up with boyfriend Malcolm (Jordan Firstman), is under investigation by the school board for kissing him in front of students, doesn’t want to be a local queer hero, and is also expressly forbidden from dating fellow teachers, like handsome new hire Harry (Langston Kerman).

FX’s latest comedy stays true to its genre, with laugh-out-loud dialogue, casually outrageous characters, and scenarios that could be out of the sitcom handbook on the surface, but get sharpened to a 2024 clip by Alvarez and fellow writers Stephanie Koenig, Jake Bender, Zach Dunn, and Dave King. Jokes fly so fast that they could be improvised, setting the bar from the very first scene for a show bursting with humor even when the plot goes off course.

How FX’s ‘English Teacher’ Defies Comedic Expectations at Every Turn
Image
When Paul Simms, the executive producer behind such comedy hits as “Atlanta” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” first stumbled upon Brian Jordan Alvarez, he wasn’t looking for a new show. Instead, he was wasting time on Twitter when he noticed someone mention the web series “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.”

“I clicked on it because I had nothing else to do,” Simms told TheWrap. “I was like, ‘This guy is really funny.'” That social media rabbit hole led to Simms meeting Alvarez and — ultimately — FX greenlighting its latest buzzy comedy series, “English Teacher.”

Created by and starring Alvarez alongside his longtime comedy partner Stephanie Koenig, “English Teacher” follows the life of Evan Marquez, an openly gay teacher in Austin, Texas. At his core, Evan wants to be a principled person. But between demanding parents, confusing teenagers and his own foibles, those admirable goals...

‘English Teacher’ Review: Brian Jordan Alvarez’s FX Series Turns Hot-Button Politics Into Comedy Gold
Image
The English language is a powerful tool. To wit, the phrase “high school” can evoke a myriad of responses depending upon who reads them. For actual young adults, it’s the recognition pressures — social, societal, educational — of their current reality. For the teachers, it’s an understanding they’re helping to shape young minds at a critical stage. For parents, it’s a desire to have some level of control and influence before their kids go off to define themselves. For those in their 30s, it’s a time from long ago that we’re likely not keen to return to or think about in any capacity. In short, it’s a rich text full of contradictions to explore in a television show.

Brian Jordan Alvarez’s “English Teacher” is an FX comedy all about contrasts. Set in Austin, Texas, each episode opens with Alvarez’s Evan Marquez getting ready...

‘English Teacher’ Review: FX’s Dryly Hilarious Public-School Comedy Makes the Grade
Image
If there’s one complaint to be made about English Teacher, it’s that there simply isn’t enough of it. The show’s first season comprises just eight 20ish-minute installments — which, in fairness, is well in line with the likes of other FX comedies like What We Do in the Shadows or Dave or The Bear (setting aside whether that last one is really a “comedy” at all).

And yet I couldn’t help feeling that in this case, it wasn’t quite enough. Because with such a sharp ensemble, smart perspective and finely honed sense of humor right out the gate, this one feels built to keep going — toward a broadcast-standard 22-episode season, even, hopefully for years and years. This, to be sure, is a great problem for a freshman series to have. If its initial brevity means English Teacher currently demonstrates more potential than it actually has the time to fulfill,...

Chief among them is his best friend, Gwen Sanders (Stephanie Koenig), the eager and optimistic history teacher who tends to see the best in people, even when she probably shouldn’t.

‘Adult Best Friends’ Review: A Sporadically Funny Comedy About Growing Up and Moving On
Image
If a mid-life crisis happens in one’s fifties, what is a crisis in your thirties called? Perhaps it’s just permanent adolescence. “Adult Best Friends” mines its comedy from the friction caused when one of a pair of best friends moves into adulthood and gets married, while the other remains stuck. Doing double duty as the film’s screenwriters and stars, Katie Corwin and Delaney Buffett craft a believable friendship for their lead characters (also called Katie and Delaney) and write some decent dialogue about why people would or would not marry. Something is missing, however — the film ends up being more dull than hilarious.

Katie and Delaney have been friends since they met at a sleepover in their pre-teens. When Katie’s sweet boyfriend John (Mason Gooding) proposes, she finds it hard to tell her pal. Delaney — who hasn’t ever liked any of Katie’s boyfriends — parties hard,...

‘The Holdovers’, ‘American Fiction’ triumph at 2024 Writers Guild Awards season finale
Image
David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.

This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.

The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.

The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

‘The Holdovers,’ ‘Succession,’ and ‘The Bear’ Win Top Prizes at WGA Awards (Complete Winners List)
Image
With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

David Hemingson’s “The Holdovers” won the night’s marquee award for Original Screenplay, beating out heavyweights including Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s “Barbie” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives.” In the Adapted Screenplay category,...

After a bit of shouting, the pair finally get Carmy into the restaurant’s back office to see they’ve posted photos of every major food critic on the wall. Likely so that all the employees will know as soon as one of them steps foot inside the establishment.

Strike-Delayed Writers Guild Awards Nominations Revealed
Image
The strike-delayed nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards are out. Check out the list below.

In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.

As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

The guild and the Oscars mostly are on the same page for Original Screenplay, with both nominating The Holdovers, May December and Past Lives. The WGA also cited Air, while the Academy went with Anatomy of a Fall and Maestro. But the Writers Guild also has Barbie on its Original List, whereas the script for 2023’s No. 1 movie...

WGA Award 2024 Nominees Include ‘Past Lives,’ ‘American Fiction,’ and Surprise Pick ‘Air’
Image
The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.

The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.

Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.

Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...
