Exclusive: Paramount label Republic Pictures has acquired international rights to Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd comedy Friendship, which A24 is releasing domestically this weekend.

The TIFF and SXSW film, which marks the debut of writer-director Andrew DeYoung, follows suburban dad Craig who falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor, but his attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives.

Supporting cast includes Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra, Billy Bryk, Jason Veasey, Jon Glaser, Eric Rahill, Conner O’Malley, Carmen Christopher, Craig Frank, Omar Torres, Jacob Ming-Trent, Daniel London, Whitmer Thomas and Raphael Sbarge.

Nick Weidenfeld, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, and John Holland are producers. Executive producers are Paul Rudd, Tracy Rosenblum, Alexis Garcia and DeYoung and Fifth Season’s Graham Taylor, Chris Rice, Christopher Slager and Dan Guando.

You hit it off, hang out, and as you get to know them, alarm bells go off. Andrew DeYoungs new film Friendship takes this premise, turns it up to the highest degree, and utilizes cringe connoisseur Tim Robinson to take it as far as possible.

The film banks on several hilarious scenarios that play much like a full-length sketch from Robinson's acclaimed Netflix show, I Think You Should Leave, but there are also some intelligent epiphanies sprinkled throughout Friendship. In between, DeYoung lets his main character run amok and burn everything down.

It’s rare for a freshman comedy to find its footing as quickly as “English Teacher” has. Once that rhythm is found, it’s even rarer for a series to completely challenge that difficult-to-establish flow.

Yet that’s what Brian Jordan Alvarez’s FX comedy does just five episodes in thanks to “Field Trip,” an episode that explores Evan’s (Alvarez) relationship with his best friend, Gwen (Stephanie Koenig).

“I was really excited and eager [for the episode], mainly because I want to give her depth,” Koenig told TheWrap. “[Gwen] is very positive and tries to see the good in things. But she’s also a person who isn’t at all perfect and gets sad,” Koenig said. “Also, Evan is like her favorite, favorite person. So if there’s any sort of trouble within that relationship, it’s like a bomb went off. It’s just nice to see that she’s a real person.

The English language is a powerful tool. To wit, the phrase “high school” can evoke a myriad of responses depending upon who reads them. For actual young adults, it’s the recognition pressures — social, societal, educational — of their current reality. For the teachers, it’s an understanding they’re helping to shape young minds at a critical stage. For parents, it’s a desire to have some level of control and influence before their kids go off to define themselves. For those in their 30s, it’s a time from long ago that we’re likely not keen to return to or think about in any capacity. In short, it’s a rich text full of contradictions to explore in a television show.

If there’s one complaint to be made about English Teacher, it’s that there simply isn’t enough of it. The show’s first season comprises just eight 20ish-minute installments — which, in fairness, is well in line with the likes of other FX comedies like What We Do in the Shadows or Dave or The Bear (setting aside whether that last one is really a “comedy” at all).

And yet I couldn’t help feeling that in this case, it wasn’t quite enough. Because with such a sharp ensemble, smart perspective and finely honed sense of humor right out the gate, this one feels built to keep going — toward a broadcast-standard 22-episode season, even, hopefully for years and years. This, to be sure, is a great problem for a freshman series to have. If its initial brevity means English Teacher currently demonstrates more potential than it actually has the time to fulfill,...

FX’s English Teacher is a comedy series created by Brian Jordan Alvarez. In it, he stars as Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, who often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional, and political aspects of working at a high school.

Evan wants to be principled but often runs into trouble because of it. His friend group of other teachers is by Evan’s side at Morrison-Hensley High. FX’s The New York Times Presents: Lie To Fly is their latest documentary film and premieres on Friday, August 23, at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on FX.

FX’s English Teacher is a new comedy series that premieres on Monday, September 2, at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on FX with the first two episodes of the eight-episode season. All episodes will stream the next day on Hulu. The series will soon be coming to Disney+ internationally.

FX’s The Old Man Season 2 premieres on Thursday, September 12, at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on FX with the first two episodes of the eight-episode season.

Two years and change after its first season ended, FX is putting The Old Man back to work.

The thriller starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow will begin its second season on Sept. 12, about 26 months after season one concluded in July 2022. The Old Man is one of four series FX will debut in September — the others are American Sports Story, the network’s latest anthology from Ryan Murphy; English Teacher, a comedy created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace); and docuseries Social Studies, from filmmaker Lauren Greenfield (The Queen of Versailles).

Additionally, FX will debut Lie to Fly, its latest New York Times Presents documentary, on Aug. 23.

There’s still a few months until Season 3 of The Bear debuts, but Disney is holding audiences over with a clip from the upcoming installment.

The clip, revealed during Disney’s shareholder meeting on Wednesday, features Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) getting a surprise from two of his employees, Neil and Ted Fak (Matty Matheson and Ricky Staffieri).

After a bit of shouting, the pair finally get Carmy into the restaurant’s back office to see they’ve posted photos of every major food critic on the wall. Likely so that all the employees will know as soon as one of them steps foot inside the establishment.

In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.

As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.
