Blade Runner 2099: Tom Burke says the Prime Video series is closer to the aesthetic of the original film than to 2049
Image
Last year, the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017 – made its way through production. We’re waiting to hear when the show is going to premiere, but in the meantime, cast member Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) has told Variety that Blade Runner 2099 is closer to the aesthetic of the original film than to 2049.

Tom Burke stars in the series alongside Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow”), Amy Lennox (Only Child), Sheila Atim (The Woman...

The New Blade Runner Show Will Make Ridley Scott Fans Very Happy (But Denis Villeneuve Fans May Be Furious)
Image
A new entry in the Blade Runner universe is on the way, and while fans of Ridley Scott’s original may be thrilled, those who preferred Dune director Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 might feel differently.

According to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga actor Tom Burke in an interview with Variety, the upcoming Prime Video series, Blade Runner 2099, will lean heavily into the aesthetic and atmosphere of the 1982 original rather than the more expansive, sleek visuals of its 2017 sequel. Developed by Amazon Studios with Scott serving as an executive producer, the series aims to expand on the themes and world-building that have defined the Blade Runner universe for over four decades.

'Blade Runner 2099': Tom Burke Compares Sequel to Ridley Scott Classic
Image
Ridley Scott's Blade Runneris carrying on an impressive legacy. Fans of the 1982 sci-fi classic likely never dreamed of getting another film in the dystopian neo-noir world Scott expertly crafted, that is, until Denis Villeneuve got his shot at making a sequel. With Blade Runner 2049, the Dune director made a sequel so good it could stand on its own, and now Prime Video has put together an impressive team to expand on the Blade Runner saga in Blade Runner 2099, an upcoming sequel series that promises to take the franchise back to its roots.

Blade Runner 2049 is a show-stopping sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling as a replicant blade runner who is confronted with hints of a potentially reality-altering past. Villeneuve's sequel beautifully recaptured the minimalist, hologram-focused sci-fi dystopia, including the grittier and more chaotic elements of the original film. Prime's sequel series, Blade Runner 2099, will take...

Amazon's 'Blade Runner 2099' Starring Michelle Yeoh Finishes Production
Image
The Blade Runner franchise received a long-awaited sequel in 2017 from Denis Villeneuve, and although it was hailed by many as another masterpiece, the film failed to make a splash at the box office. Since then, another big-screen installment has been out of the conversation, but audiences will be re-entering the futuristic neo-noir world soon enough. Amazon is currently developing Blade Runner 2099, a television series starring Michelle Yeoh that will serve as the latest sequel to Ridley Scott's original 1982 classic.

According to Discussing Film, Blade Runner 2099 has officially wrapped production, which took place in the Czech Republic. Alongside the 2023 Best Actress Oscar winner, Euphoria star Hunter Schafer is set as the co-lead for the upcoming Blade Runner sequel. Due to the union strikes in 2023, the show's production was delayed several times before finally finishing filming late this year. As one could assume, plot details have remained scarce at best,...

Secret Level Hints At The Lost Potential Of Concord
Image
The Concord episode of Prime Video's Secret Level showed the hidden potential of the ill-fated hero shooter, and it hinted at what could have been for the video game. Secret Level adapted 15 video games, both old and new, to television, but not all of them were absolute icons of the industry. One game in particular - Concord - was an objective failure, and it was a bit surprising to see it in Secret Level. Even though the game was a failure, Secret Level actually ended up enhancing Concord and showing off the game's true potential.

Concord was a hero shooter game, meaning players controlled specific characters that had their own set of abilities and powers. Like Overwatch 2 or Marvel Rivals, players would have formed teams based around each character's abilities, and they would fight against similarly structured enemy teams. Unfortunately, Concord also didn't do enough to differentiate itself from other hero shooters,...

‘Secret Level’ Review: An IP Branding Exercise
Image
The aims of the animated anthology Secret Level, whose 15 shorts are based on video and tabletop games, are clear enough: As production company Blur Studio puts it on their website, “Secret Level is our love letter to gaming.” But despite the tangible earnestness of that claim, the series fails to shake off the cynicism of its commercial function and blinkered politics. Beneath flashes of beauty and fits of inspiration lies an elaborate branding exercise.

Secret Level features a handful of shorts that conjure impressive moods. The bleak industrial landscapes in “Armored Core: Asset Management” all but subsume the episode’s protagonist (Keanu Reeves)—and the formidable mech he pilots—conveying the extent of his alienation and the stakes of his mission; the economical “Warhammer 40,000: And They Shall Know No Fear” spares us unnecessary dialogue, setting its space marines loose with sweltering kineticism; and the martial arts revenge tale of...

'Worst Idea I've Had': Denis Villeneuve Thought Blade Runner 2049 Might End His Career
Image
Creating a sequel to an iconic film is never an easy task, something Denis Villeneuve recently revealed was on his mind when he decided to make Blade Runner 2049. Despite having some truly great films under his belt leading into the sequel to Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi film, Villeneuve revealed that he believed Blade Runner 2049 could have been a career-ending film if he didn't succeed.

Per Variety, Villeneuve sat down with Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein for an hour-long conversation at the BFI London Film Festival, in which the director discussed various points of his career, including his time directing Blade Runner 2049. The Oscar-nominated director revealed that deciding to tackle the sequel to Scott's Blade Runner was one of the "most risky" decisions he's ever made in his career, but maintains that he couldn't pass up the opportunity because Blade Runner was his favorite film. "Doing the...

1 Hunger Games Character Confirmed Dead Despite Being Alive In Songbirds & Snakes Book
Image
Co-writer Michael Lesslie confirms Clemensia's death in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, deviating from the source material. He confirms this while discussing the use of violence as a key element in the storytelling, with each shift in the protagonist's character tied to an act of violence or character death. Clemensia survives the snake bite in the book and returns to participate as a mentor in the 10th Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes co-writer Michael Lesslie has confirmed the death of a character who stays alive in the source material. The prequel movie focuses on Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) mentoring Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) during the 10th annual Hunger Games, setting the stage for his rise to power in Panem. Other characters across the Capitol are also featured in the film, many of whom have similar roles from Suzanne Collins' original novel.
